Back at Royal Woods, at Franklin Avenue, Heather Nelson, formally known as Sphinx, was dropped off by a Taxi as she stood in front of the Infamous Loud House. It was arranged by the Wayne Foundation for her to stay with the Louds until further notice, officially becoming their foster kid. An idea that, she would be lying to herself if she said she liked, she wasn't so thrilled about, considering she lived her life in isolation from others ever since the loss of her parents. She had slowly driven herself mad by attempting to follow in her Uncle's footsteps, but hadn't even gotten far when she was with the Doom Kids. But now that she was here, she saw no reason to try and waste this opportunity.
Few people actually got a second chance. She may as well consider herself one of the lucky ones.
With all that in mind, Heather walked up the front steps of the house and knocked on the door. A few seconds later, she was greeted by Lynn Sr. and Rita, her new foster parents.
"Ah, you must be Heather." Rita introduced. "Come in! Come in! We were expecting you."
"Obviously." Heather bluntly replied.
"We felt it to be such an honor when Bruce Wayne of all people put it upon ourselves to look after you." Lynn Sr. said. "We hadn't gotten an opportunity like this since-"
"Since you blew it in taking care of a pair of kids you've adopted as a favor for some friends?"
Rita and Lynn were taken aback by that. They didn't realize how word got around about that. And even though they made amends, the guilt remained.
"Look, don't bother getting things cozy for me. I'm not planning on staying here long." Heather said. "I plan on getting a place of my own around here. So, if you please..."
"But we already had set up one of the rooms for you." Rita replied. "Besides, the rest of our daughters were pretty excited about having another guest move in with us. Speaking of which...GIRLS! HEATHER'S HERE!"
And that is when the rest of the Loud Sisters came down to meet, greet, and practically surround their new foster siblings. Heather could see that the Louds live up to their name as almost immediately, the girls bombarded her with lots of questions.
"Hey! Glad to have you here! Liking the house so far?" Asked Lori.
"You do look super cute, but you could use a touch-up. Want me to give you some tips?" then Leni.
"You'll be living with us? That's cool. If you want to listen to some music, I got some good picks I'd wanna show you." ya'll know this to be Luna
"So, they say you used to be a smart villain. Bet you make a better brainiac than a maniac like your uncle. Haha! Get it?" joked Luan
The lot of the Loud Family groaned at that.
"Below the belt, Luan." Luna said to her sister."
"Sorry."
"Do you like plants or animals? 'Cuz if so, we'll get along just fine." said Lana.
"Same here. Just don't touch any of my stuff." added Lola.
"I'm sure we can work together, if you're as smart as they say." then went on Lisa. "Know, that I appreciate the company of a fellow genius, even one such as yourself."
"Uh...Thanks." was all Heather had to say about all this positive attention she was getting. It was definitely not something she was used to. But then, she feels something at her feet and looks down to see little Lily by her legs and she was trying to pull up her pant leg, as if she saw something. But Heather pulled back, not too comfortable with that, nor any of this. "Well, this has been fun. But...maybe I should just...head up to my room for now."
"Of course, honey." Rita said before turning to her daughters. "Lori, Leni, see Heather upstairs.
The two elder sisters brought the girl to the second floor of the house and showed her the room that used to belong to Lynn and Lucy. It was pretty cleaned out and had a new bed made just for their new guest.
"We had to move a lot of our sisters' old stuff into storage." Lori explained. "Figured it'd be the best for you to make up space."
"We'll let you get settled. But be sure to join the rest of us for dinner later on." said Leni before both sisters headed and Heather looked to see if she could be comfortable around the room. She thought this family was rather too friendly, it was almost unnerving. But, there was not much she could do about that for now as she looked out the window. The thought of escape crossed her mind, but not even she could jump out of a two-story window without breaking something. She had a lot on her mind right now and began to wonder if she could truly make this work.
Sometime later, Heather did join the rest of the family for dinner, and it was the first time in years she's had a decent meal. She savored each bite of Lynn's cooking, loving it more than anything else right now while the sisters were just enjoying their food normally.
"Mmm. This is the best thing I've ever had." She complimented.
"Don't get too crazy about it." Lola remarked. "Dad makes this stuff every week."
"Was the room we gave you to your liking, Heather?" Rita asked.
"It'll do. But you really didn't have to go through all this for me."
"Well, we wouldn't be good foster parents if we didn't look out for all the kids in our kids in our care."
The Sisters were then looking at their mother in bewilderment before looking after themselves in confusion.
But then, Lynn Sr peaked his head through the kitchen doorway and said "Anyone up for dessert?"
All the sisters cried out "YES!", but Heather only grabbed her plate and stood up from the table.
"Actually, I'm gonna step away from that." She said. "If you don't mind, I'm just gonna finish up here and put my plate okay."
"That's okay, Heather. We could take care of that for you." Rita insisted.
"No, really. It's no trouble at all." The girl just felt like she needed to get away and have some time to herself at the moment as she took her plate to the living room. But upon entering, she froze at the sight of the fireplace and memories started to play in her head. Memories of her parents' demise were seen, suffocating in the fire, which she wound up becoming a greater victim to, with the loss of her family...and a permanent scar.
Back in the dining room, the Louds were continuing to enjoy their dinner and desert. Yet, all of their minds were still on Heather.
"You think we're being too hard on her?" Lana asked.
"This is just her first day here." Lori replied. "We just need to give her time to adjust."
"From what Mr. Wayne said, Heather's been through a lot." Rita added. "Losing her parents at such an early age, losing your mind over that, it takes its toll on most people."
Lynn Sr came by collecting plates as he then said "For now, the most we can do is help her get used to things around here, show her that she's welcome and see if there's anything we can do for-"
He was interrupted when the sound of a plate crashing to the ground came from the living room. Everyone rushed out to see what happened, only to find Heather on the floor, looking to be breathing heavily and shaking, having a seizure. The parents went over to hold her down while Lisa went to get a first-aid kit. And all while that happened, her pant leg was up to reveal a burn mark from the incident. It didn't take long for them to realize that Heather was suffering PTSD, and a fear of fire...
Later after that, Heather awoke to find herself in her new bed with Lisa looking out for her like a doctor, stethoscope at her chest, checking her vitals until she realized her patient was awake.
"Ah. Good to see that you're up." Lisa said. "You've been out of it for several hours."
"What happened?" Heather weakly asked.
"Pyrophobia. It was triggered by a mixture of tragic memories from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. You went into a seizure and our parents carried you up here so I could have a look at you."
Speaking of whom, Lynn Sr. and Rita came in just now to check on their new foster child.
"Are you okay now, Heather?"
Lynn Sr. then asked, "Has that even happened before?"
Heather answered "A few times. I freak out at the sight of fire. It's only gotten worse over time that I drove myself insane and became a psycho to try and suppress it.
And then Rita came by the side of the bed and began to say"We're really sorry, Heather...Sorry that all this has been thrust upon you. Sorry about what you had to go through before. Sorry about a lot of things. I know this isn't the life you'd want..."
She then took Heather by the hand, surprising the young girl.
"...But I promise you that we can try and be there for you."
Tears suddenly fell from the young girl's face as she smiled so genuinely and suddenly hugged the mother to the Loud Family. Rita gratefully returned the hug, embracing the new member of the family. It was the first time in years that Heather had smiled so happily. She had missed the feeling of happiness...and loved it so when she had it again...
