Wow, thank you for reading the first chapter; now here's the second one! Special thanks to ultima-owner, I really appreciate the review. And with that, the chapter:
"Do you know where you're going, Sirius Black?" Officer Howard finally asked the dog animagus. It had been what felt like at least an hour and they weren't really making much progress. The crescent moon was higher in the sky, as compared to barely rising before.
"Don't worry, I know where to find it. I've been there at least seven times." Sirius answered, turning back into a human. "Though…I believe we should rest. I'm…unfamiliar with this place, and I still have a couple of questions." he added, walking towards a seemingly abandoned tentsite.
"Alright." Howard agreed, taking a seat on one of the two benches by the site. "What are your questions?"
"Ok, so what exactly is a legion? You say it's a tamed chimera, but what does that mean? Is it like magic or something?"
"So, um…" he scratched his head. He controlled these things, but never really knew how it became the way it was. "...So this is a legion's core." he responded, taking the core out of his legatus. He looked at it for a moment, as if it was calling out to him, but he ignored the feeling.
"This is the legion's core. Chimaras have cores too. It's essentially like a heart. My guess is that this core, their hearts, are changed in a way to be able to be controlled by humans. The legatus also helps at this, of course. It's quite a science now that I'm thinking about it. I don't really get to do that when I'm fighting for my life." He continued, finally putting the core back at the end of his little speech. Sirius seemed to understand it a little bit more now.
"And you can SPEAK to it?"
"Yes. It's, um, more of an understanding I think. Only me, and maybe my sister, can hear what they have to say. Only our specific legions, though."
"Fascinating!"
"Heh. It is until you realize how chatty they can become."
They both laughed a little at this.
"Let me ask you this, Sirius. What is magic? Like, what is it? Is it a force…like, what is it?"
Sirius thought for a moment before speaking.
"Magic…it's a hard topic to explain. It can do almost everything. It can light torches, it can move things for you. It can even kill. What determines a wizard or witch is if they can control these magical forces. That is how they can be born from purely muggles, and how even purebloods can produce squibs, wizard-borns with no magic. We have invented items to help us control these forces. Wands, for example. Which reminds me," Sirius paused, laying down, "I suppose we should really head to bed. It's going to be a long day getting to Diagon Alley, and you've had quite the shock already."
"Yes, I suppose so." Howard agreed, laying down in return.
And they both went to sleep, unsure of the next day's events. The crescent moon still high in the sky.
The officer was in harmony square. A mist covered the entire area, though it was still visible. Something in the mist emerged. It was a flickering red light, the sign of a chimera. Changing his baton into a pistol, he shot at the beast, only for it to vanish when the bullets made contact. Another one appeared. It too vanished when shot at. He was confused, and examined his pistol to see if anything was wrong. A fatal mistake. More red lights appeared. Knowing he was outmatched, he summoned his sword legion, making it attack the beings as well. The mist cleared, and he was suddenly inside the Astral Plane. Unsure, he dismissed his legion. He walked around a bit, but nothing was there. There was no noise, no movement. There was none of the static background sound he was so used to hearing. It was a shame; he actually grew to like it. Only his footsteps made the barren place feel human. He was by a cliffside, he recognised.
*THUNK*
Something had hit him in the head. He faced that direction, only for there to be nothing there. Nothing hit his head either, but why did it hurt? Turning back, the mist returned, taking a more concentrated form as it bashed into him, forcing him down the cliff. He desperately looked around for something that could save him. Nothing. He summoned his legion, but by that point he was too far from the cliff to make it. Looking again, he saw a small rift; a potential portal. He guided his legion to it, sucking him up in it too. The mist clung on, but he kicked it back down to its bottomless grave. Then the world turned dizzy and bright, then faded to black.
He awoke. The sun was barely in the sky; it was clearly morning. 'Was that all a dream?' he thought as he got up from the bench he was sleeping on. Across from him, the prisoner he met that night was still there. It wasn't a dream. Was the experience he was just experiencing a dream, or was it a memory? He scratched his head in confusion. It was at this time when Sirius got up as well.
"Morning, Howard." he mumbled, still tired from last night.
"Yeah…morning, Sirius." was all that he could think of.
Sirius looked at him. "Are you alright?" he asked
"I'm fine…yeah, I think I'm okay. Just some dimensional whiplash I guess." he tried to chuckle at that last part.
"Alright…" Sirius sensed that something was wrong, but also knew he might not want to get into it. Turning towards the sky, he added, "So! Off to London I suppose. Let's go."
Howard nodded. Sirius turned back into a dog, and they made their way to London.
"So this is London." Howard commented on when they finally saw the city. He was only aware of it through history books and classes; it was one of the most famous cities of the old world, before the chimaras invaded. It looked grander than what he had seen from his world. "It looks very great Sirius." He told the wizard. He summoned his legion out, just so it could see the view of the city.
"Oh, NOW you summon me- what's this?" his legion grumbled
"It's London, Swordsy. One of the great cities of the past." he responded
"Hmm. It's nice…The Ark is better."the legion commented
"Of course you would say that. Come along now." Howard walked on with Sirius, holding the chain as a leash, the legion not looking too pleased being treated as a pet.
The city was greater on the inside than the out. People walked all over, the streets filled with cars, cabs, and double-decker buses. It must've struck the hour, for a large ring was heard throughout.
"Y'know, if this is one of the peaks of humanity's architecture, then it's no wonder how easy it was to almost make your species extinct." the legion commented as Howard was looking around the city in awe as they walked.
"Hey!, Cut that out." he responded, swatting the sword legion back.
Sirius chuckled at this. "Never seen anything like this before, huh?" He asked the officer
"No, I've only seen this in the history books."
"You never told me, what year are you from? Living on a man-made island sounds like something from science fiction."
"Oh. Never thought of that." Howard paused. "I'm from the year 2078." he replied nonchalantly.
"20…78..?" Sirius gasped in shock. It was true this stranger was from somewhere high-tech, but never thought that far into the future.
"I also never asked, what year is this?" Howard asked the agape Sirius
"Oh, oh, sorry about that." Sirius composed himself. "This is the year 1993, at least that's what the papers tell me." he chuckled a little at that.
"That's….wow. Fascinating." the officer said as he looked around again. The city seemed to appear more special now; it was a thing of the past, and he knew it would be destroyed, at least in his world.
"Wait…are you sure it's okay to walk in broad daylight like this?" he asked, finally realizing that he was walking with a wanted man.
"Of course it isn't!" Sirius responded, thinking it was quite obvious, "That's why we've been sticking to the shadows!" waving his hands in the alley they were actually talking in.
"Oh…" Howard rubbed the back of his head with his hand. Looking around, he saw something and was immediately alert
"Be right back!" he shouted as he dashed off
"...What the bloody hell was that for?" Sirius asked the left behind blue chain. Swordsy only shrugged as it was eventually dragged away at the will of its master.
The place the Neuron officer ran off to was a clothes store. He noticed it and thought it would be a good idea to get clothes for the prisoner, so that hopefully he can blend in more with society. Bursting into the store he grabbed some black pants, a white shirt, and a gray overcoat to go along with it. It looked like it would fit on Sirius, Howard was thinking. He dropped some Gs onto the counter, and ran off without saying a single word to the confused employee. As soon as Swordsy got there, Howard was running off back to Sirius, making it have to follow Howard the way it came. Sirius was rightfully confused when he saw the officer running towards him, then practically throwing some random clothes into his arms.
"Wh-where did you-"
"The store," he panted, "I went to the clothing store. I thought it would help you blend in more." He finished, continuing to catch his breath a bit.
"Uhhh..thank you." Sirius responded, putting on the clothes. He did look in fact nicer, though his hair was still a mess of a nest. "Though you still need a makeover." he then smirked, pulling his hair out of his new overcoat.
"Wait, what?" he asked, a tad confused
"You heard me. Remove your chestplate," Sirius said back
Officer Howard removed his chestplate reluctantly.
"And your bandolier." Sirius added
Howard looked at him before doing what he said.
"And your belt." Sirius was chuckling a little bit at this now
"No." Howard refused "I need my belt, I need my legatus, and I refuse to remove my radio. I'm not going into this world without SOME protection." he explained.
"Alright. I understand." Sirius relented
"Okay, so are we going to get on with our lives now?" the legion chimed in
"Yes, just a sec buddy."
"Do you think we should cut his hair?" it asked
"Wow, you actually made a point. That's a rarity." Howard commented, seeing the logic in his legion's idea.
"Can I cut his hair-"
"Nope. Not gonna happen." Howard quickly stopped it from doing something. An idea wasted yet again.
"Uh, shall we get going now?" Sirius asked the duo
"Yeah, we should." Howard agreed, dismissing his legion and following Sirius yet again with his armor in his arms.
They finally reached the section of town. A little pub apparently called 'The Leaky Cauldron'. It was black and gray, and looked like a run-down, abandoned building. But there were still some faint lights in it, almost to prove that it was still functioning.
"Is this the place?" Howard asked Sirius, who was gazing at it in a nostalgic awe. "It looks just the same as when I was in Hogwarts. I'm glad this is one place that hasn't changed." Sirius muttered
"So, this is the place?" he asked again.
"Yes, yes, this is it. You'd best get inside. There's a courtyard further in, and you'll need a wand to access it. You touch the bricks in this fashion." Sirius showed them the motion, then took the armor from his hands
"Wait, what? You're not coming?" Howard asked, puzzled
"I wish I could, but I'm a wanted criminal that will be spelled on sight. And I didn't spend all that time in Azkaban to just go back days after I finally escape." he explained, a darker tone in his voice as he finished
"Yeah; being in confinement sucks." he put his hand behind his head; he could agree with Sirius on that part.
"How would you- you know what? I'm not sure if I should know." Sirius backed off from asking how a policeman could sympathize with jail time. "But you shouldn't worry. It'll be like those undercover missions, right?" he continued, a pang of jealousy in his voice. He might've wanted to become an auror, but due to Lord Voldemort and Peter Pettigrew, he no longer had a chance.
"Alright." he was calming down. "But what about you? What are you going to do?"
"Well," Sirius began, "I'd like to see the city. I haven't been here in a while. I'll hide your things in my house, then go to the Burrow."
"What's the Burrow?" the officer asked
"Oh, right, you're not from here. The Burrow is where the Weasleys live, along with that traitorous rat!" Sirius flared up with frustration at the mention of the rat. Seeing a concerned look, he backtracked, saying, "Oh, I'm not going to hurt the Weasleys, they're a really nice family. It's just their rat."
"Ah, alright. Well, good luck. Don't forget to find a wand!"
"Same to you." and with that Sirius ran off for his own goal, leaving the officer from the future behind to do his task
The insides of the pub were just as drab and shabby as the outside. It was a dull black and gray, a few tables strung about with fewer patrons. The oddest thing there was a nice wooden staircase leading to some unknown place. He would have to investigate that later; there was a job to do. He continued to look about, the floor creaking in response whenever he took a step. He was aware of how out of place he was: a guy with strange equipment in a bright darkish blue jacket walking around like he'd never seen it before. But the patrons paid him no mind. Looking over to one of the columns, he noticed a wanted poster. It was of Sirius Black, screaming and shouting, the words: 'HAVE YOU SEEN THIS WIZARD?' on top of the moving picture. The bottom words just read to not engage, and to tell the authorities if spotted. Hm. 'Perhaps this world had already invented holographic pictures, or this was probably just their magic at work.' Taking the poster off from the wall, he crushed it in his hands, dropping it to the floor. Suddenly the bell went off, indicating people were coming in. It was those wizard police officers he'd ran into the other day! Thinking quickly, he hid behind the column. He slowed his breathing; there were only about five, their white robes tattered with dirt and faces tired. Perhaps he could borrow one of their wands. 'I'm only going to borrow it.' he reasoned with himself, 'Plus it might make things even with us. It doesn't matter really, so long as it's returned shortly.' He pulled out his legion. It looked around at its surroundings.
'This place sucks. More than the usual human structures that I've seen.' It examined its sword arm as it continued speaking, 'Why are we here anyways?'
"Quiet!" the officer whispered. Then he pointed towards the aurors, who were taking their seats at one of the longer tables. 'Oh. Those assholes.' it commentated.
"Yes, and I need you to go spy on them, and take one of their wands." When the legion cocked its head in confusion, he elaborated. "The stick!"
'Ah, yes. The stick. Y'know, you humans shouldn't really rely on one powerful thing that can be easily used against you.' It glanced at his master, a look of humor in its eye.
"Yeah, whatever, just do it!" he commanded, and thus the legion floated over towards the table, and this is how the conversation went:
"It's been hours and we STILL haven't found that muggle!" the leader sighed. He was rather average: average height, weight, and looks. A mane of peppered hair rested comfortably on his head. He scratched it with one of his brown leathered gloves. "We're lucky backup arrived to help with the rest of the damages. Yet we: a team of trained aurors, cannot find a simple muggle!" He turned towards one of the other members. He was shorter, with short brown hair. Dark sunglasses covered his eyes. "If it weren't for YOU we wouldn't be in this mess!" he shouted at him. The rookie shrugged.
"I mean you were the one to tell him we were wizards." he stated, a matter of factly
"Oh shut the hell up, Barker!" the leader raised his voice. "What matters is that there is a muggle who knows about us and isn't in our custody-yes, five butterbeers please." he stopped screaming at his comrades to order drinks for all of them. The server arrived shortly, with five beer-like drinks on a tray, and passed them out one by one. "As I was saying," the leader stopped to take a drink, "If this muggle isn't caught soon, the ministry will start breathing down our necks. I can already feel it."
"It's kind of both your faults." a third voice spoke, this time more feminine. "Barker brought up the ministry, and you admitted there was a wizarding world." the tan female pointed her wand at each of them as she spoke.
"I guess she's right." Barker moved his glass as he spoke. "But why care about this one? Plenty of them know about it. The prime minister knows. And what about the parents of all the half-bloods and muggleborns-"
"Shut. Up!" The leader interrupted him. "We do not speak of them here! Our blood shouldn't even be mixed with that muddled excuse!" he took another gulp of his mug. The rest of the table was silent, with uncomfortable looks on their faces.
"...You know all of us are half-bloods, right?" the rookie asked him, as if he already knew
"Yes, of course. Of course I know, Barker." the leader put down his glass, his hands started rubbing his temples. "I'm just stressed. Our entire world could be shattered if he got away, do you understand?' he looked directly at Barker
Barker raised his hands up as if he was caught by the police "Yes, I understand! Geez if I didn't know you I'd think you were a death eater or something."
The leader got up, his hands slammed onto the table. The other officers looked at him, if they weren't already. "Do. Not. Call. Me. A. DEATH EATER." he hardened his gaze. "I may be pureblood, but even then I wouldn't want to ally myself with you-know-who." he sat down again, but his face did not rest.
"Who?" Barker asked, cocking his head
It was at this point the leader lost his temper. He got up, walked across the table, and grabbed the rookie's sunglasses.
"Hey! Those are prescription!" he barked, reaching to get them back. But the leader had height advantage, and was teasing him with his sunglasses, knowing he couldn't get them. The other members were flailing about, trying to get the sunglasses from the leader, and telling the rookie to get down from the table. Officer Howard pulled his legion back, dismissing it.
'Um, you're welcome, sir.' it muttered sarcastically.
He slid towards the aurors, staying close to the ground in order to not be seen. Looking quickly, he found what appeared to be one of their wands, grabbed it, and dashed out towards the other end of the pub, and into doors that led to the outside.
'This must be the courtyard.' officer Howard thought as he looked around. It wasn't really a courtyard, as much as it was a dead end alleyway. He could hear the commotion from here, and knew he had to act fast. Flipping the wand to its correct side, he performed the spell as Sirius showed him.
…
But it didn't work.
He looked at the wand, and even tried it in the opposite direction, but still, nothing happened to the wand or the wall. This was the only wall that looked suspicious enough to be an entranceway. Just for trying it, he even did it on the other ones. Nothing still. "Why isn't this working?" he wondered aloud
'Perhaps it's because you're a muggle, as those wizards kept saying.' his legion reappeared to taunt him. 'I actually quite like that word: muggles. It sounds insulting.'
"That's because it is." Howard muttered to his legion.
'Then I like it even better, sir muggle.' it made a chuckling sound.
Howard rolled his eyes. He put the wand on one of the crates in the alleyway. Sighing, he said, "How about we try it our way. Swordsy, deploy! Use slash!" He commanded his legion. It shot a glare at him for calling it 'Swordsy', but it complied, using one of its long, sword arms to cut through the wall. The brown brick wall was sliced in two by a bright, white-blue light, and then it exploded; all of the bricks burst from the wall into the now open hole. It was indeed an entrance way into a narrow alley. Strange, crooked buildings filled the officers eyes, but he couldn't look for long as he heard the sounds of footsteps coming their way. They had obviously heard the explosion. Thinking quickly, he dismissed Swordsy and quickly jumped behind the crates and barrels lining the alley. It was good he was quick, as in a moment the aurors rushed into the dead end, seeing the destruction in front of them.
"Hey! I found my wand!" Barker barked, picking up his wand from the crate Howard put it on. For a few seconds Barker looked at the area, as if he was searching for something. Howard covered his mouth and nose with his hand, trying to control his breath and heartbeat.
"Oh shut the hell up, Barker!" the leader called, causing him to look up towards him. The leader actually did something competent this time, to Howard's relief.
"By merlin, what happened here?" the murmur of voices arose; the patrons also had come to see what had happened. The leader tugged at his collar.
"Alright! Everyone back inside. Us aurors will figure it out." he commanded the other wizard cops to herd the others back inside. The leader shut the door as soon as the last one was gone.
"What the hell happened here?!" he cried. The other aurors shrugged
"It seems to be an explosion." Barker remarked, his hand on his chin.
"Wow. Thanks." the female voice from before replied sarcastically.
"I think I know who did it. It was Sirius Black!" the leader announced
"But we didn't see Sirius Black in The Leaky Cauldron. How could he have done it?" Barker asked
"He's right for once." a fourth, and less important voice agreed with him.
"Sirius Black is an elusive creature. As slithery as his ancestor's house." the leader explained. "If he escaped from Azkaban, he could be anywhere, doing anything. We have to catch him." he decided
"But what about the-"
"Shut it! The muggle can wait. Sirius Black's more important anyways. Besides, it'll probably die in a car crash within a week; those are still a major cause of death in muggles, right?" he honestly asked. The rest didn't answer the question.
"Come on then! We must find him!" he urged the others. They followed him as he rushed into the unknown alley, completely missing the culprit.
After waiting a few minutes, Officer Howard got up from his hiding place. The bricks were still scattered, though some of them were back in their place, almost as if by magic-oh wait, magic probably did do it. He stood in front of the now smaller hole.
"This is it." he said
'You think you're ready?' his legion appeared again
"Why do I keep dismissing you if you're just going to pop up again?" he put his head on his hand
'Lighten up! If I'm to serve you until eternity ends, at least I should have some fun messing with you, right?' it turned one of its sword hands back to a more human shape, and patted the officer on the head.
"Uh-huh." he redid his hair after the legion removed its hand. He sighed
"I'm ready. Are you?"
'Yeah no shit.' it responded, dismissing itself quickly
Then the officer of the ark walked into the unknown world of the wizards, hoping to find his way home.
