Chapter 8

Miho just arrived back in her room, a smile plastered on her face. Seems like her mom was right, she never thought she'd have as great of a first day of school like the one she just had. She couldn't wait to call her parents to let them know how her day was. But she decided that she could wait till tomorrow morning for that. So she decided to watch some cartoons while eating dinner before turning in for the night. Heading over to the TV stand to the shelf of DVDs, she skimmed through to see what she wanted to watch this time. Most of them she had already watched but she didn't mind watching them again. She eventually settled on one of her new favorites, Jim and Terry.

"Eva," she called out.

"Yes, Miho," the voice of her virtual assistant answered.

"Can you turn on the TV and eject the disk holder for the DVD player please?" Miho asked.

Eva complied, the TV lit up to life along with the DVD player, soon after the disk holder extended out from the player like an empty hand waiting for Miho to place the disk inside it.

"Thank you," Miho said before placing the DVD in her hand into the holder and giving it the gentle push to signal it to retract back inside the player.

As the player began to spin the disk and the commercials began playing, Miho decided to use that time to prepare her dinner. Her dinner now done and the main menu showing on the screen; Miho was about to reach for the remote when she heard Eva ask, "would you like for me to select the 'play all' option for you Miho?"

"Yes please," Miho answered; "and, thank you Eva."

"No problem," Eva responded.

Miho began to eat her food and watch the cartoons that she'd already seen before. Despite that she couldn't help but laugh at the same funny scenes, mainly when Jim would always try and engage whatever new scheme he thought of to try and catch Terry and how no matter how close he got to succeeding or not, Terry would always find a way to make things backfire on Jim; it didn't seem to matter if it was her second, third, or maybe her hundredth time, Miho always laughed as hard as she did when she saw it for the first time.

After seemingly the last episode finished and her dinner finished as well, Miho placed her dishes in the sink and quickly cleaned them. Afterwards, turning back to the TV again showing the main menu, she asked, "Eva, could you please turn off the TV and DVD player please?"

"Of course," Eva responded, before the TV screen turned black and the light from the DVD turned red indicating it wasn't active anymore.

After thanking Eva, Miho promptly began her pre-bedtime routine, which was mainly taking a shower, brushing her teeth and changing into her pajamas. After crawling back into bed, she closed her eyes as she felt sleep come for her again, feeling that she'd have happy dreams tonight.

Suddenly, Miho's eyes shot open, as she looked around she couldn't really see anything, only a strong storm hitting what seemed like a rocky hillside. As she continued to turn around, she noticed something black fall off her head, when she knelt down to pick it up, her heart nearly skipped a beat. As her now shaking hand grabbed and lifted up the object, she recognized it.

"This is…" she started to say through a shaky breath, "my old cap, the one I wore back in Kuromorimine." Only then did she notice the similarly black sleeve around her arm; looking over the rest of her body she only saw the same black clothing that she remembered from her time back in Kuromorimine. Suddenly sensing a presence of sort behind her, she quickly turned around and saw two human silhouettes. As the storm seemingly began to clear, she knew who these two newcomers were: on her right was her sister Maho, to her left was her dear friend Koume. As they stared at Miho, she saw what looked like disappointment on both their faces, making her feel even more confused and nervous.

A third figure appeared, this one much taller than either of them. As the new figure assumed the form of her mother, more accurately, her birth mother, seeing her once again made Miho tremble. Then, as if on cue, both Koume and Maho looked away from Miho while closing their eyes. As her birth mother turned her back to Miho, she waved her hand as if to signal the other two girls to come with her, then she started to walk away. When the other two girls followed after her, Miho couldn't hold it in anymore and cried out, "Wait, big sis, Koume, please, don't leave me, PLEASE!"

Tears immediately began to flood out from her eyes and she fell to her knees. As she continued to cry, she felt the ground begin to rumble as if there were tanks moving nearby. Looking up Miho saw a Tiger 1 like the one she commanded during the final match of the last tankery tournament coming towards her. To each side of the tank, other tanks appeared but they weren't Kuromorimine tanks, but Pravada's. Soon, the line of tanks stopped and aimed their guns at her. In unison, they all shot at her, the explosions from the shells were enough to jolt Miho awake. Waking up to the dark emptiness of her room; Miho could still feel the fresh trail of tears on her face and a cold sweat all around her body. Looking at her pillow revealed a good size wet spot from her tears; immediately she flipped it over.

"No, don't believe it Miho," she told herself. "Maho and Koume aren't like that, they care about you, they do as much as you care about them."

After collecting herself, Miho laid back down on her bed to try and go back to sleep, though she knew that it would be much harder to do so.
