I have to be honest here before you go on to read the chapter. For a while I was unsure of the direction that I wanted to take this story, and whether or not to keep it as a choose your own adventure due to the rules of this website.
But I've ultimately decided on where I want this story to go and you, the readers, will make choices that impact how events will pan out. As the possibilties are very numerous for a story like this, things can ultimately pan out in various ways. I'll touch upon this more at the end of the chapter. For now, enjoy.
Eddy winced as the first rays of sunlight hit him, he rubbed his eyes and stretched before looking around the rest of the room. Ed and Double D were still asleep, the latter sleeping blissfully with his nightcap on. Eddy silently groaned at how he had always wore a hat to sleep. Since the two shared a bunk, Eddy thought about going down to him and asking him about it but Eddy was still adjusting to the fact that he was up so early. As he looked around the room he noticed something, Rolf wasn't in his bed.
Eddy simply gave another yawn as he got down from bunk to get ready for the day. Truthfully, he was annoyed at the fact that he had to work but in a way it was sort of like renting an apartment, but instead pf having to pay money to stay he had to do fieldwork instead. A perfect job for a picnic ant like Rolf, he thought. But for a genius like him, he felt he deserved something more. Not that he would do anything to screw up what he had though, he was pleased with what he had for the time being.
As he headed out of the cabin to get some air, he saw why Rolf was out if bed. He was standing outside of the cabin, staring into the distance with an expression on his face that Eddy couldn't really make out. It was one of intense focus but also one of anxiety as well. Eddy decided that he needed to say something but wasn't exactly sure of what to say.
"Uhh... Rolf?" Eddy finally spoke.
"Good morning Ed-boy." Rolf replied, his voice monotonous and on edge.
"You alright Rolf?" By now, Eddy was very much awake and growing unsettled.
"Danger is coming, Ed-boy. Rolf feels it within his very soul."
"When?"
"That is what worries Rolf, Rolf does not know when the danger shall arrive, just that it comes."
"Maybe you've just been working too hard."
"Poppycock! Rolf simply does what he has been tasked to do!" Rolf sounded more like his usual self with that response, calming Eddy a little bit. "But the poultry meat has never been wrong before. It has even predicted the Kanker Girls destroying the cul-de-sac for their personal trinket!" Rolf said, the two young men shuddered as they remembered that horrible day. But Eddy felt like that was a plausible answer as to why he didn't see Rolf that day... at least playsible in the sense that it was Rolf homself telling him this.
"So are we gonna tell the others?" Eddy asked.
Rolf looked very conflicted, biting his lip for a minute before answering Eddy.
"Perhaps it would be best if we not inform them. We may cause panic if we tell them."
Eddy thought that made sense. He didn't want a repeat of what happened their first night there.
"Mornin' guys." Kevin said groggily as he greeted the two. He adjusted his cap with one hand and rubbed his eye with the other. He and Eddy were most definitely not happy to be up so early but they eventually got used to it once they started working at the compound.
Eddy and Rolf began to relax a bit and started to converse with Kevin as more of the group began to wake up. Even then however, Rolf amd Eddy couldn't rid themselves of that anxious feeling...
Everyone went to go get breakfast, with Eddy and Janyse being assigned on watch duty.
"Try not to rough him up too much Janyse! I still want my man for later!" Lee joked. Some members of their group and others they met during their time there laughed while Eddy simply groaned and rolled his eyes.
"Keep it moving McGee." Janyse said.
"Yes, Officer..." Eddy snarked, earning him a glare from Janyse.
As the two headed to the gate, Eddy began to eat the bacon, egg and cheese bagel he had while Janyse sighed.
"I wish we could go home. I mean I like it here. But it can't replace Peach Creek..."
Eddy swallowed as he also began to reminisce about home. By now they had been travelling for almost a month and everything still seemed so surreal.
The two of them tended to butt heads very often in Peach Creek but this was one moment where the two could agree.
As they headed to the wall surrounding the compound, Janyse looked at Eddy and smiled to herself, thinking back to Lee's joke earlier and how she found out about Lee's feelings for Eddy.
Peach Creek High School, about 4 years ago; Janyse had just entered her homeroom which she shared with the other teens. The Eds just sat bored, aside from Double D, who was well-prepared for class as usual. Kevin was talking to Rolf about trying out for the football team.
What confused Janyse though we're Nazz looking at her and giggling to herself before she turned to talk to some other girls in their class. Then there the Kankers who were giving her some nasty glares, especially Lee, before they turned and talked amongst themselves.
Class had been relatively normal until their teacher announced that they would all be doing a team assignment and that their teammates were all predetermined. When it was revealed that Janyse would he paired up with Eddy, the giggles and glares resumed, leaving Janyse confused and rather annoyed.
As the class period ended, Janyse decided to pull Nazz aside, she was the first that Janyse noticed giggling so it felt like the best place to get answers.
"Ok, what's up with everyone?!" She asked sternly, Nazz knew by now that Janyse was a very serious girl and not one to joke around with.
"Well, I heard from..." Nazz then proceeded to name a group of female students that Janyse had no interest in, saying that they all heard from another girl and so on and so forth until Janyse stopped her.
"Alright, I don't care who said it, I just want to know what they said!"
"Well, they said you were majorly crushing on Eddy and now Lee Kanker is totally pissed at you!"
Janyse instantly felt nauseous. Why Eddy of all people? The two clearly didn't like each other as they were always arguing about something. Nazz saw the look of confusion and disgust on her face and decided she had to say something.
"Look, I'm sorry I laughed about it. I mean part of me thought it was true since you two look like an old married couple when you argue every day. But I'll try to spread a counter-rumor to get everyone off your back." Nazz said.
"Please." Janyse sighed, she knew that since Nazz was a fairly popular girl and kept true to her promises, word would spread quickly and everyone would stop laughing at her. The Kanker Sisters and Eddy were another issue. She figured Eddy would be easy to deal with, since the rumor involved him as much as her, so she went to go talk to the Kankers.
During lunch she found them in the school basement, they usually hung out there whenever they weren't busy. As soon as they saw Janyse they looked ready to fight.
"Calm down, I'm here to talk, not fight." Janyse said calmly.
"Kinda late for words, homewrecker!" May replied.
"What is wrong with you three?!"
Lee pounced on Janyse and pinned her to the floor.
"Don't act like you don't know!" Lee screamed in her face.
"But I don't know!" Janyse assured. Janyse managed to look into one of Lee's eyes and saw them red with rage... and sadness. Likewise Lee looked into Janyse's eyes and saw the calm determination she had. Lee got up and helped Janyse to her feet.
"That's it? I thought you were gonna pound her, Lee!" Marie questioned.
"She ain't done nothing wrong. It was just a dumb rumor someone started." Lee said without turning to face her sister. Instead she wiped her eyes and gave Janyse a grin. "This girl has guts for comin' down here and she's got a honest look in her eye, and you know how Mom said there ain't many people like that around anymore."
May and Marie were shocked at what her sister was saying but they seemed pretty accepting of it. Lee was in a way the brain's of the three sisters, so if she said someone was Ok, then they had to be.
Suddenly, the door to the room slammed open, with Eddy apparently having kicked it open.
"WHERE'S JANYSE! I KNOW SHE'S DOWN HERE!" Eddy shouted.
"IT'S OUR BOYFRIENDS!" The Kankers said in excitement. The Eds screamed in terror as Eddy slammed the door shut.
"I shoulda known she was in with the Kankers!" They could hear Eddy say as he ran.
"So you three like them?" Janyse asked.
"Yeah, they just got a certain something that we love." Marie admitted.
The Kankers reaction back in class earlier suddenly made sense to Janyse, and she promised to help them get with the Eds. Thankfully that silly rumor about her and Eddy died down over the coming days. As for Eddy himself, he and Janyse managed to work together enough for them to pass the project, mostly due to Janyse threatening to hand Eddy over to Lee if he ever acted out.
"Hey, are you listening?"
Janyse snapped back to reality, Eddy was talking to her from a few steps up a ladder leading up to the wall of the compound.
"Huh?" She said.
"I said hurry up! The others will get pissed if they see you just standing there!" Janyse groaned at Eddy's attitude. She took the last bite of her breakfast and climbed up after Eddy.
Being on lookout was relatively easy in Eddy's opinion; just look into the woods and make sure nobody funny looking got in. But having an easy job and having a fun job were two very different things, and if there was anything he was not having, it was fun. Double D kept telling him that this sort of job needed diligence or some other word that started with "d" that Eddy couldn't remember, then again he wasn't fully paying attention at the time.
Meanwhile Armando sat behind his cabin, out of sight from everybody with a walkie-talkie in his hands.
"Everyone ready?" He asked.
"Ready on our end." Someone replied on the other line.
Eddy had sat there at one if the watchtowers looking out into the forest for about an hour when he finally noticed something that made his blood run cold. It was the Marauders, charging towards the gate with their weapons drawn.
He may not have intended to be aa loud as he was but the sudden sense of urgency and panic caused him to shout as loud as he could.
"INCOMING!"
Armando immediately pulled out a trigger from his pocket and pressed it the moment Eddy shouted...
If Eddy's voice didn't grab the attention of the entire compound, then the explosion Armando set off did. What was once a part of the sturdy wall on the East end of compound was now a gaping hole where more Marauders began entering so that they could brutalize the compound. The surprise attack caught everyone off guard as they suddenly grabbed any weapon they could to hold off their attackers.
Janyse and Eddy sped down the guard tower in order to look for their friends.
"Eddy!"
Double D screamed, he and Ed ran towards Eddy with the latter holding an assortment of weapons. Eddy and Janyse took a Shotgun and a Mac-11 that Ed had brought them respectively, leaving Ed with an AK-47 and Double D with a MK 23 Pistol that he hesitated in holding.
"We gotta go find the others!" Janyse shouted, the sound of gunfire made it a bit difficult to hear her voice but the Eds got the message.
"Hey!"
A voice they didn't recognize shouted at them. The four teenagers turned and saw a Marauder looking at them and reading his gun.
"No!" Ed shouted as he instinctively fired at the man befire he could harm his friends. The four teens were stunned as the Maurader dropped dead from the gunfire. Ed dropped the gun and look down at his now trembling hands, knowing that he just took a human life, and not in a video game or comic book where he was used to that sort of thing happening, but for as happy-go-lucky he could be, he never even thought about doing something like that...
Worried that they might all get killed if they just started around, the four teens ran to find another member of their group.
"Guys!" Jonny screamed as he ran towards them, clutching Plank close to him.
"Jonny, are you alright?!" Double D asked.
"I'm alright, but Sarah and Jimmy need our help! They're in the mess hall!" Jonny explained.
"Baby sister!" Ed screamed as he snapped out of his trance and ran to the mess hall.
"Ed!" Eddy called out.
"Oh jeez..." Janyse added.
Ed dashed into the mess hall and found a Marauder threatening Sarah and Jimmy with a Machete.
"Let go of my baby sister!" Ed shouted. The others attempted to follow him inside but were suddenly flanked by a group of Marauders.
"Don't even think about it!" One of them said, brandishing an ax while his cronies had guns. The teens tried aiming their weapons at the enemies but they were outnumbered by one.
"Ed, help!" Double D pleaded as he shivered in terror.
Ed turned back to see his friends in danger... then turned back to his sister and her best friend...
This was a choice he didn't want to make but he had to do something.
Make your choice:
Choice A: Save Sarah and Jimmy
Choice B: Save Eddy, Double D, Jonny, and Janyse
I hope you enjoyed this chapter as things will definitely begin to speed up after this. Now as for what I was talking about during the start of the chapter. This story will remain a "choose you're path" story, however it won't stray from the plot I have set up too heavily. Anything else that happens in the story is then up to you...
