"Mel, thank you for staying with her"
"No problem, but how do you know her?"
"She is under my care for now"
Melinda gives a wanting more look so Maria carefully continues, "Well she has been in foster care since birth and so she's had multiple social workers but I am the most recent one."
"Oh, did you know about her arms, because she lied to Phil about it. What happened with Garrett? I thought he was her guardian."
Maria tries not to get emotional seeing Skye laying there and thinking about everything, luckily she's been pretty good at pairing the other kids with future families so she has time to focus on Skye, "I put her with Garrett and I was swamped with other cases, and so when I heard she missed a week of school I made sure she was okay, but uh- Garrett had been hurting her and she was locked in a closet. He tied her up in metal wiring, which made lots of deep cuts all up and down her arms and wrists. I got her checked out right away and they wrapped her arms in bandages and they put braces on to make sure that nothing happens in the healing process. God, I thought she was okay."
"Hey," Melinda said, "It's okay, she's okay. It's not your fault"
"It is, I put her with him. I thought he was a good guy"
"Yeah, I did too." Melinda sighs, "So are you fostering her?"
"Only until I find her a better family and I think she's okay to go to a new place"
"Why didn't you ask us to take her in. We always have the room."
"I would have but I thought it might conflict with…"
"With trying to find Daisy?" Melinda asks.
It's true, for the last couple of years, Melinda has been interested in finding her daughter that she gave up. In all honesty it's been hard. Melinda gave up her daughter because at the time she was born she was not in the mental state to take care of her. She thought that giving her up was the best option. Her daughter could end up living a better life that at the time Melinda was unable to offer. Years later when Melinda was starting to get better she figured maybe she and Phil should talk about reaching out and finding her daughter. Phil was always on board. From the moment she was born Phil fell in love with her. It was a long process and it was a little hard focusing on that while also helping all her children but they never stopped looking. Both her and Phil did their research but sadly it hadn't been very conclusive.
Maria looked into the case too, and they had a small lead that she was dropped off at St. Agnes, but then the records stopped. Melinda figured maybe her daughter was happy with a family so her search slowed. Phil's and Maria's didn't either, and all their kids did their own research to try and help. None of the information was conclusive though sadly.
"Yeah, I just, I know you haven't had a lot of time to look. And your kids are older, I was hesitant."
Melinda nods, "Well, that's true, but at the same time, I haven't been focusing on it. I want to believe that hopefully she's happier and having a better life. I also…" She pauses, "you know, I've been thinking, I might just be drudging stuff up. What if she's happy and doesn't know? What kind of mom would I be if I uprooted her life?"
Maria smiles warmly at Melinda before a voice breaks them out, "Hi, I'm Doctor Campbell, Lincoln Campbell. I am in charge of Skye's case as well as Dr. Price, Rosalind"
"How is she?" Maria asks.
"Well, we believe that given her data and the overall condition, Skye is okay. She seems to have fainted from low blood pressure, which is probably from the panic attack she had because all the tests we ran came back positive. The pain in her arms was probably another factor. Mrs. Coulson said that there was a scuffle, so it makes sense that the wounds were reopened. Luckily we were able to clean it all up and reassess the wounds. I like the way the doctors did the bandages and the braces to make sure everything heals as it should, so I redressed them and put them back on. Apart from everything else, she is okay. I want to monitor her just for tonight but she should be ready to go once we check in the morning"
"Thank you"
"Thank you Dr. Campbell"
They sit down again and both sigh. Maria glances over and speaks up, "So would you be interested in fostering her?"
"Well I know Phil wouldn't be opposed," Melinda says, "And honestly I wouldn't either."
"Okay, well you let me know and I can get the paperwork as early as needed. I think your fostering license is still up to date."
"Yes, I believe Phil and I just renewed it."
"Great, well, thank you so much for helping her today and calling me and everything. Let me know, okay?"
"Okay I will, thanks Maria,"
"See ya Mel"
"So you want to foster Skye?"
"I mean I'm not opposed to it, are you okay with it?" Melinda asks, as Phil and her had dinner that evening.
"Oh, I'm perfectly okay with it. Should we ask the kids?"
"Yeah probably, especially if they come over"
"Okay" Phil responds, calling up the group on his phone. All the kids join the facetime answering with something like, "Hey dad"
"Hey guys, we have a question for you. Skye, a girl in my class needs a good home to live in for a while, how would you feel if your mom and I offered her a place here?"
"We feel like we could really help her, but only if you all are okay with it"
"GO for it" Pietro laughs.
"Why not, it's the right thing to do"
"I'm cool with it"
"That just means Pietro and dad are even more outnumbered. I'm perfectly okay with that" Elena laughs.
The parents laugh and Melinda says, "Okay, I'll let Maria know"
"She can get Pietro and Wanda's room"
"Hey, Nat! Stop auctioning off our stuff!" He pouts.
Robin smirks, "Hey rates are high nowadays. You guys could rack up some cash."
Pietro just playfully glares as Wanda has a laugh attack.
"It's not that funny" He pouts looking at his twin.
"No one is getting anyone's room. You all will always have rooms here" Melinda said coming back into the screen, "Maria is sending over the paperwork for us to sign and told me that the doctors should release her tomorrow"
"Doctor?" Nat wonders.
"She has had a rough couple of weeks, but we hope to change that" Phil answers as the children nod. They've all been through something like that, "Does anyone want to go shopping with us?"
Elena's eyes light up, "Yes, I will tag along."
Phil laughs and nods, "Great,"
"I'll go too, Bobbi would love to come too" Nat smiles.
