Chapter 8: Robert and Zeus' adventure
The next morning...
The mischievous eyes of Robert, a restless and curious boy, shone with an unusual intensity as he watched Jack and Bill's horses tied up in front of the Hope Valle police station. It was as if a miraculous idea was forming in his restless mind, fueled by his fertile imagination and his desire for adventure.
While taking his lunch break, Robert decided to approach the police station, attracted by the imposing presence of the horse. Bill's horse, with its shiny coat and calm gaze, exerted a special fascination over him. He admired every detail of the animal, from its majestic posture to its firm hooves hitting the ground.
But it was when he saw Jack tying up Sargentt, the imposing-looking black thoroughbred, that a mischievous idea began to form in his mind. Robert was fascinated by Bill's horse, its shiny coat glistening in the sun's rays, its powerful muscles denoting its strength and agility. It was as if the animal exuded an aura of mystery and adventure, and Robert felt an irresistible urge to approach it, because he thought that horse was calm by the look of it, and besides, now that mountie Jack Thorton had left his horse tied up there, no one would notice the noise of the animal or the lack of one...
In a reckless and youthful impulse, Robert decided he wanted to ride Zeus, even though he knew it was a risky and possibly dangerous idea. He imagined the thrill of riding through the countryside, the wind blowing in his face, and the adrenaline pulsing through his veins. No matter how crazy the idea, he was determined to make it happen.
With his heart beating fast with excitement, Robert cautiously approached Zeus, watching him with admiration mixed with a little apprehension. He held out his hand slowly, hoping that the horse would accept it. To his surprise and joy, Zeus seemed to notice the boy's presence and bowed his head in a friendly gesture, as if inviting Robert to come closer.
With a mischievous smile on his lips and a twinkle in his eye, Robert carefully climbed onto Zeus' bridle, feeling the excitement and adrenaline coursing through his body. He held on tightly to the reins, ready for his improbable and risky adventure. However, before he could give any commands, Zeus gave a loud and unexpected neigh, suddenly rearing up and rocketing through the streets of Hope Valle, leaving Robert clinging desperately to his mane as he screamed with excitement and fear.
Emily's alarmed scream echoed through the hall of the pub turned classroom, interrupting Elizabeth Thatcher's in an instant. Her eyes widened in surprise and concern as she heard the girl's hurried words, announcing Robert's escape aboard Bill Avery's horse.
Elizabeth's heart raced with panic as she realized the gravity of the situation. Without hesitation, she ran out of the hall, dodging the shocked students who were beginning to disperse. The sun was shining brightly in the sky, but the heat of the moment drowned out any sensation of warmth.
In the distance, Elizabeth caught sight of Robert riding awkwardly on Bill's horse, which was galloping wildly along the road. A lump formed in her throat when she saw the boy clinging desperately to the animal's mane, his expression a mixture of excitement and fear.
With no time to lose, Elizabeth shouted for the students to run and look for Jack, while she headed determinedly for the police station. Her feet hit the ground hard, her mind working frantically to find a solution to the chaotic situation unfolding before her.
When she reached the police station, her gaze fixed on Jack's black horse, Sargentt, tied up in front of the station; she shouted for Jack, but heard no response from inside the station. Without hesitation, she ran to the animal, her breath panting and her heart beating urgently. She gripped the reins tightly, her mind focused on just one thing: reaching Robert before something terrible happened.
With fierce determination, Elizabeth clumsily climbed onto the horse's back, her lack of practice evident in her awkward movements. She felt her legs tremble with tension as she struggled to keep her balance, her fingers gripping the reins tightly.
Sargentt sensed the agitation of his makeshift mount and, as if he understood the urgency of the situation, began to run with determination down the road, his hooves pounding rhythmically against the ground. Elizabeth held on tightly, her mind focused only on reaching Robert and bringing him back safely.
As she galloped down the road, Elizabeth felt a mixture of fear and determination pulsing through her veins. She knew she couldn't fail; Robert's safety depended on her, and she would do everything in her power to ensure that he returned home safe and sound.
