a/n: Ah, post canon! I've decided that COVID won't be a thing in this universe, as in the canon universe we can be pretty sure it wasn't based on the flash-forward.
Chapter 20: Sweet Nothing
They say the end is coming
2020. It was a new year. Santana was going to graduate with her degree in music production and Brittany was quickly climbing the ranks at the studio. All in all, things were going really well. They were looking forward to the first Glee Club baby since Beth, Kurt and Blaine's first born. They'd been named honorary aunties, especially because they out of all the rest of the Glee club, excluding Jesse and Rachel, lived closest and were the least busy. Of course other members had the same honor, but they also had been given the responsibility of extra baby time. Brittany didn't have much issue with this- she loved little kids, most of the classes she taught at the studio being for toddlers. She was even getting a bit of baby fever watching Rachel's due date approach, but her and Santana agreed they both needed to be settled into their careers first. It was just hard because Brittnay had settled years ago. But, all things considered, it would also make the most sense for Santana to carry as she could work longer. Dancing and pregnancy weren't the world's best mix.
Everyone's up to something
With a degree in music production secured and a job lined up, they took their new auntie duties in stride as they settled into life as a working couple. They slowly got their schedules aligned and spent time with their niece, Julia, named after Kurt's mother. But Brittany's baby fever only got worse. She desperately wanted children, and she thought the sooner the better so they'd be close in age with their cousin. Santana had to consistently remind her that artificial insemination wasn't that cheap and they didn't have the money for a kid, but Brittany didn't believe it. She knew full well both of their parents could help make their dream a reality if Santana would only ask. She couldn't ask without Santana's blessing though. Her heart wanted a baby though, and she was going to beg and plead until she got what she wanted.
A week later, as the end of summer approached and Santana's probationary period at her job passed, she finally gave in and asked their parents for help. It was given almost too enthusiastically for her liking, but she knew how excited both of their parents were for grandchildren. And so the process to find a clinic and a donor began. Santana was most concerned with the donors health, but she did account for them hopefully at least physically resembling Brittany. She knew finding a genius would happen, but no genius matched Brittany anyway. She was her own breed. Santana so wished they could just squish their eggs together, but it wasn't that simple. So they'd do their best to get a match.
The process began in October. Santana got hormone injections and was soon ready for the artificial insemination. Then, they waited for the results. Hopefully, they'd have a baby on the way.
To you I can admit, that I'm just too soft for all of it
"We were successful, as I told you a few months ago but" The doctor said cheerfully at their 10 week checkup "More so than we perhaps intended. Mrs. Lopez-Pierce, you're pregnant with twins."
"Twins?!" Santana was flabbergasted as she craned her neck to look at the sonogram screen.
"Yes. It appears they're fraternal, but we won't know the genders until later." The doctor said taking a closer look.
"Does this happen a lot with AI?" Brittany asked.
"It's not common, per say, but it can happen more often than the traditional methods. The hormone treatments can play a role, but it's entirely possible this was just Santana's genetic predisposition."
"There's no twins in my family" Santana asserted "this is really shocking…"
"But it's also good, isn't It babe?" Brittany looked at her sweetly. "We'll be set for a long time."
"But are we prepared for two? That's double the cost, double the trouble, double everything!" Santana ran a hand through her hair.
"We can do it. Together, we're unstoppable. Even twins can't stop us." Brittany assured.
"And it's only one pregnancy, that's something that isn't doubled." The doctor reminded them by handing them prints of the sonogram. "Though you may need to rest sooner. We'll just have to keep an eye on things."
"This is just a lot to process. I mean…two babies…" Santana shook her head "It's certainly unexpected."
"My professional suggestion? Lean on friends and family. It takes a village." The doctor advised "And here, in case your morning sickness doesn't subside, a safe prescription. I've also put down a vitamin higher in folic acid and iron, that'll be better for a pregnancy with multiples."
"Thanks doc." Brittany said, taking the prescription and tucking it into her bag. "We'll see you in a few weeks." Brittany helped Santana up and they headed out of the office.
"Two…" Santana kept lamenting as they made their way home "Do you think we even have space for two?"
"Honey, one bedroom can house two kids until they are at least five easily. We've got time." Brittany kissed her forehead "I do think we should share the news with our parents soon though. Financially, you do have a point, and if you'll be out of work longer, we may need a touch more support."
"I don't know, I mean, we have a lot of savings after they covered the cost of AI, maybe not?" Santana said.
"We have to share the news either way. How about we don't say anything? Knowing our parents, especially yours, they'll offer." Brittany shrugged.
"Offer? They'll force us to take it." Santana chuckled as she pulled out her phone. "But you're right. Should we call both our mom's at once?"
"Probably, otherwise one will complain for eternity how they found out second." Brittany shook her head.
"Fair point. Maybe we should just do a video call via Skype then?" Santana asked.
"Sure, just send them a text so they get on." Brittany said as she went and grabbed the laptop and set it on the coffee table. Santana sent a text to them and almost immediately the dot next to their mothers' names turned green, indicating they were online.
"Ready?" Santana asked as Brittany adjusted the laptop so the camera angle was okay.
"Yup." Brittany set up the call and it rang for a couple seconds until both their moms' faces shone brightly on the screen. Their reactions to the news was priceless. These twins were going to be the pride and joy of an amazing family.
I find myself running home to your sweet nothings
The next 5 months seem to go by in slow motion and in the blink of an eye. Santana was on bed rest for the last two months of the pregnancy, but had been given permission that, stress permitting, she could do some of her work from home. It was best they'd figured it out anyway, as for at least the first few months she'd be on maternity leave with the kids. Brittany was also going to take leave, though hers would be shorter. However, she had negotiated her hours so she could help Santana as much as possible. In the coming months, their moms' would fly in to be there for those first few weeks, along with their dads' for a few days. Everyone was excited to meet the two new Lopez-Pierces. A boy and a girl, for that matter. Their names were Jessica and Elliot, named after the identical blonde twin girls from Sweet Valley High, Jessica and Elizabeth. They'd improvised for Elliot's name, of course, and actually ended up really liking how it sounded with the middle name they'd already known- Finn. Jessica's middle name had been a little bit harder, but eventually they decided on using Alma, in honor of Santana's grandmother. As July rolled around, it was time to meet the newest members of the Lopez-Pierce family.
Elliot Finn was the spitting image of Santana as a baby, a big mess of thick black hair on his head and dark skin. Jessica Alma looked more like Brittany, with a thin sheet of blonde hair and lighter skin. It was as perfect as it could be. Their life had just gotten a lot fuller, but they wouldn't have it any other way.
All you ever wanted from me was sweet nothing
