Chapter 3
Sable trudged through the dense fog, her steps heavy with determination. The oppressive darkness seemed to weigh upon her shoulders, and she couldn't shake the chill that seeped into her bones. Rubbing her arms in a feeble attempt to ward off the cold, she pressed onward, her mind consumed by thoughts of her missing friend, Mikaela.
In the depths of her inner turmoil, Sable replayed the information she had received before entering the ominous mist. Mikaela, her closest confidante, had vanished into this sinister realm, pulled into a nightmarish world where death lurked at every turn. The rules were clear, but the consequences were dire, and Sable knew she couldn't abandon her friend to such a fate.
With a steadfast resolve, Sable steeled herself against the uncertainty that lay ahead. Uncertain if her arcane abilities would prove useful in this unfamiliar domain, she fought to keep her emotions in check, focusing solely on her singular goal – to find and rescue Mikaela at any cost.
As she trudged onward, the sound of faint voices reached her ears, cutting through the eerie silence of the fog. A flicker of hope ignited within Sable's heart as she caught sight of a distant campfire, its warm glow beckoning her like a beacon of salvation. With renewed vigor, she quickened her pace, her steps guided by the desperate longing to reunite with her friend.
However, as Sable drew closer to the campfire, her hopes were dashed as she realized that the figures gathered around it were not familiar faces. Three strangers, their silhouettes illuminated by the dancing flames, greeted her with wary eyes as she approached, their presence both unexpected and unwelcome.
For a fleeting moment, disappointment threatened to overwhelm Sable, but she quickly pushed aside her feelings of frustration, knowing that she couldn't afford to dwell on what might have been. Steeling herself for the challenges that lay ahead, she squared her shoulders and prepared to confront the strangers with a determined resolve, ready to forge new alliances in her quest to save Mikaela from the clutches of this dark and unforgiving world.
Leon Kennedy sat quietly by the campfire, his eyes reflecting the flickering flames as he listened to the heated argument between Feng Min and Nea Karlsson. Min's frustration was palpable, her voice trembling with emotion as she addressed Nea.
"We failed the last trial because we left Adam and Meg behind," Min asserted, her tone accusatory. "It wasn't right, Nea. We could have saved them."
Nea crossed her arms, her expression defiant. "The risk was too great," she countered, her voice edged with frustration. "Everyone was injured. We made the right decision to leave. Staying would have meant certain death for all of us."
Min clenched her fists, her anger simmering beneath the surface. "That doesn't make it any easier to accept. We left them to fend for themselves. It feels wrong."
Sensing the escalating tension, Min turned to Leon, her eyes pleading. "What do you think, Leon? Was it the right choice?"
Leon, who had been observing the argument in silence, looked up and met the hardcore gamer's gaze. He chose his words carefully. "I wasn't there, so I don't know all the details," he began, his voice calm and measured. "But I appreciate your willingness to help, Min. It shows your strength and compassion."
Nea scoffed at his answer, her disdain evident. "Typical cop answer," she muttered, making no secret of her dislike for police officers.
Unfazed, Leon remained composed. "Listen, both of you," he said, his tone gentle but firm. "This place is designed to break us. We need to support each other, not tear each other apart. Rest now. We'll need our strength for the next trial."
Just as Leon finished speaking, the sound of rustling bushes drew their attention. Emerging from the fog was a woman with striking white hair and clad in dark clothes. She approached the campfire, her presence commanding attention.
"Hello," she greeted, her voice steady and calm. "I'm Sable Ward. Could you tell me what this place is?"
Min, always quick to welcome newcomers, offered a reassuring smile. "Welcome, Sable! You're in a realm controlled by an entity that forces us into deadly trials. We—"
Sable politely raised a hand, interrupting her. "Thank you for confirming what I suspected," she said. Her eyes scanned the group with a sense of urgency. "Do any of you happen to know where Mikaela is?"
The group exchanged glances, the name sparking recognition but no immediate answers. Leon shook his head. "I haven't seen her for a while. Right now she must be in a trial, so you might have to wait for her to finish. My name is Leon."
Min nodded, her concern for both Sable and Mikaela evident. "I am Feng Min, but please call me Min. We'll help you look for her!"
Nea, despite her earlier hostility, softened at the sight of Sable's naivety. "The name's Nea. We'll keep an eye out for Mikaela. You're gonna reunite with her eventually."
Sable's expression softened, her gratitude evident in her eyes. "Thank you for your support. I have some information that you might find useful."
As the group settled back by the campfire, a sense of renewed purpose filled the air. They were survivors in a deadly game, bound together by their determination to protect each other and assemble those who lost themselves in the fog. The trials ahead would be brutal, but together, they stood a chance.
