They had been driving around for a while now. Together, they shared the silence of the night. One of his hands was on the steering wheel, the other on her thigh. Every once in a while he turned to look at her face, lit up by the moonlight. She looked happy and at peace, a look on her face he wished would last forever. He had waited patiently whilst she was getting ready for the night with the humming of her voice sounding soft and muted from the other side of the room. His eyes kept looking at the door until she finally walked out. Her hair was loose, laying casually over her shoulders. She was only wearing a simple dark blue dress with lace detailing and she turned her back towards him.

"Do you mind fastening it for me, Jack?"

He moved towards her swiped her hair away and kissed the crook her neck before buttoning down the garment. Then they headed of into the darkness as fast as they could. It wasn't an unfamiliar route they were taking for the roads were all too familiar for young Mr. Dawson. He would often drive out of the city to clear his head. Then stop his motor car in the middle of a field and waited until the sun came up. He took a sharp turn to the right, catching Rose by surprise for a moment before she leaned back into her seat again. She didn't care where they were going to. Even if it was the end of the world she simply didn't seem to mind. She trusted him. Jack drove the vehicle to his known spot and stepped on the break. Rose looked up at the sky. The stars were shining brighter than she could have ever imagined. Jumping out, she collected her blankets and laid it out over the grass.

"You have been here before, haven't you?" She asked him curiously.

Jack nodded and sat himself down beside her. "Yes, many times. The view up here is impeccable don't you think?"

"Yes," she whispered and smiled brightly. If there were a God, she thought to herself, let him make this moment last forever. Let them freeze into the history of this time and place.

"I always love the idea that the silence up here is so close to the rush of the city. It's so close to each other, but here I feel as if Boston doesn't exist anymore." He pointed towards some dim lights in front of him and Rose followed his hand, "People down there live such different lives it almost feels like a dream."

"I know you want a different life, Jack."

He scoffed and leaned back onto the blankets. She knew him through and through, but it also occurred to him that he wouldn't have met her is he had thrown in the towel and left everything behind. It was something he had too often thought about, yet it was still possible, with her. Rose looked down at his face as if she could read his answer through his eyes. She stood up and moved back to the car.

"It is never too late to start over, Mr. Dawson." She spoke proudly and tried to reach for the basket she had brought along. Finally grabbing the object she lifted it in the air. It was a bottle of champagne Mrs. Adams had once gifted her mother. Now was the time, Rose believed, to raise a toast to life. Holding along two glasses she turned around too quickly. Rose lost her balance and in a moment to save herself from falling she dropped all the glass objects onto the ground. "Shit." She cried whilst looking at the broken glass in front of her. Jack shot up.

"Rose, are you okay?"

She looked up at his worried eyes before bursting out in laughter. "My god, I do know how to ruin a moment, don't I?" Their chuckling was soon taken over by complete silence. They were standing so close to one each other that she could feel his breath tingling against her skin. There it was again; the eagerness she had never even thought was possible to feel. Now, it was stronger than ever. She was no longer afraid, ready to give in to the desires of her body. Jack seemed to notice it too. First the impulse of a normal caress before he kissed her neck gently. Rose closed her eyes, feeling his hands move down her body. Within seconds they had removed her out of her dress and she undid her corset cover, letting it fall onto the floor. Her heart was pounding in an unfamiliar beat, a way it never had. His fingers were now at the back of her corset, slowly unlacing it. The tightness of it soon broke free from her and she let him lift it over her head. It dropped next to the other garments. Jack then stopped. One more layer and she would be completely naked in front of him. One more step and she would be freed from her so called innocence. But her thoughts had been far from decent for a while now.

"Are you really sure you want this? I can stop right now." It was all happening so fast without any form of verbal communication. Their movements were speaking for them. Rose nodded her head and turned around to face him. Her fingers caressed his lips before kissing them once more.

"I have never been so sure, Jack. I want you to touch me everywhere you want to." She put his hands on her breasts. He was shaking. Placing her lips on his again, hardening the kiss. His hands moved back down and stopped at her waist. He lifted her up and moved back towards the blankets where he laid her down gently and slowly.

"Are you nervous?" She whispered, still feeling the unsteadiness of his touch.

"I don't want to hurt you." He confessed. The subtle light of the moon, hitting only one side of his face made him suddenly look so young and innocent. It occurred to her that he also was just a boy like she was just a girl. The world had put too much responsibility on both much too soon. All they wanted was to simply live without any expectations the outside world had put on them.

"I am more worried about you. You're trembling so much."

"I am just cold." A smirk appeared on his face. One more look of her and he knew he wasn't going to turn back anymore. He lifted himself up and removed his own clothes before positioning himself on top of her again. Moving her legs up a bit he entered her slowly. Rose moaned loudly into the stillness of the night. With every thrust is felt as if the sensation in er stomach grew stronger. She was burning with passion and love for this man. All her doubts seemed to vanish within the thinness of the air. She clenched her hands in his back, his heavy breathing echoing in her ears. Never let me go, she spoke only in her head, never let me go, Jack.

Light tingled brightly onto her eyes before she opened them. Disoriented at first, she swiftly realized they were in the backseat of his car. How they got back she couldn't quite recall. The whole night felt like a blur, a dream which she wasn't allowed to experience in real life. Yet here she was, her head resting on his naked chest. She was still naked herself with only the blankets covering her body. His light snoring gave away his unconscious state and she slowly removed herself from his embrace. He looked so peaceful, so beautiful in his sleep, she could stare at him forever. Freeze this moment full of love and happiness. Before she could sneak out of the vehicle, Jack let out a deep sigh and managed to take hold of her arm without opening his eyes.

"Don't you dare leave this poor guy alone." He pulled her against him once more, inhaling the scent of her hair, "You do look so beautiful." He stroked the her bare back and moved down, eventually squeezing her thigh.

'Are you trying to bribe me into repeating last night's actions, Mr. Dawson?"

"I am only trying to bribe you into staying, miss Smith. But if you want to continue last night's actions, I wouldn't mind it a single bit." He smiled at her, his blue orbs burning into her soul. They both didn't move for a long time, they simply stared at each other, soaking up every inch of one another's face. Then, a sudden and sharp beam of light seemed to caught the couple by surprise. A voice was heard, then followed by the opening of the door.

"Gotcha!" a man screamed at them, shining his torch into their faces. Rose shrieked and lifted herself off Jack, covering her body with everything she could possibly find. "Get out of the car, right now!" the stranger continued to throw his harsh words at them. Jack managed to put on his drawers before stepping out. The man was much older than him with his beard grey and long. He looked stern and stepped towards him with his big and lumpy feet.

"You," he yelled at Rose, "get out of there too."

"Let her get dressed first, sir." Jack took a step to the side so the man wasn't able to look at her maidenly state.

"You should have thought about that sooner before entering my property to undergo this dirty affair of yours."

Rose had now stepped out of the other side and slowly walked up to the two bickering man. Jack took her hand and positioned her somewhat behind him. They were shivering of the cold and tried to stand as close to each other as possible. "We are really sorry, sir. We simply got lost and lost track of time."

"So you decide to simply place that rust bucket of yours onto my land and call it a day? There are literally ten no trespassing signs all around here!"

"Yes, you are more than right, sir and we are nothing but to be blamed for out action. But can I make it up to you?"

Jack then turned back to his car and took out his trousers. Reaching in his pocket got hold of his wallet and took out some money. Rose rolled her eyes at his action warned him. But the old man didn't seem to mind his now real form of bribery. He took the money and scanned the young woman up and down. Despite wearing her underclothes she was practically still naked. She noticed her eyes stopping at her breasts for a moment before he turned around and disappeared from their view.

Jack sighed, "That was a close call, wasn't it."

Rose collected all her belongings that were scattered all around and put on her dress. Without asking he closed her buttons again, but she shook her head heavily in the process. "It still baffles me how we live in a world were we seemingly can fix everything with money," she turned around to face him, "And how easily it comes to you to wave those bills in his face and call it a day."

She was right. It shocked him how he didn't think twice about his action. An action that came so naturally to the likes of him. He had seen his father do it, his brother and even his friends and therefor it seemed almost too logical of an act. Even he did it more than he would have liked to admit.

"You're right." He mumbled. "My god, you are absolutely right."

"Of course I am right!" She laughed, "Now let's go home before we die of the cold."

...

The thought of his hands all over her body managed to have carved itself a place inside her mind. Her heart fluttered by the idea of it, making it almost impossible for her to concentrate on her work. Love had taken everything over, or so it seemed. A shadow hovered over her work and Mrs. Woodbridge interrupted her thoughts.

"Miss Smith, I need to talk to you."

Rose nodded, stood up from her place and followed Mrs. Woodbridge into the kitchen. She closed the door behind them and cleared her throat. "Julie still hasn't returned. If you are still in contact with her I need you to tell her that if she isn't here by the end of this week she can forget about coming back. I won't give her a reference either."

Rose swallowed the lump in her throat. She wanted to defend her friend, but she knew it would be a battle impossible to win. And in some way her boss was right. Julie needed to come back and pick her life back up. The marriage with Tommy would support her and Rose knew he would give Julie all the freedom she needed. Tommy had never been the type to marry. Thus to do this was a great sacrifice he was giving her.

"The other thing I wanted to discuss with you is that I have spoken to Mrs. Huntington. You have probably heard of them for they are one of the richest families of the city. She wants you to work for her and her daughter in their house for a few weeks, making them both new undergarments as new dresses for the new season."

Rose was shocked by this sudden offer. She had only had a few encounters with miss Huntington herself and all of them were far from pleasant. She thought for a second and then shook her head. "I simply can't, ma'am. I simply can't do both work at their house and work here at the atelier. Besides, we both know the other subject regarding this similar situation." Rose wanted to walk out of the room, but Mrs. Woodbridge stopped her.

"They have offered to give us an extra reward. I promise you that you'll get more for it and you don't have to do the work in the atelier during the time you work for them.:

"Can't you ask someone else for it, Mrs. Woodbridge?"

"Apparently your name has been circling around the upper class women. They only want you. Please," She then begged her, "We haven't been doing well for a while now. Almost all of my best seamstresses have left apart from you so you are the best we've got." Then her face turned serious again. "So if you want to keep your job you better accept this offer."

Later that night, as they were having dinner together, Jack shook his head in disbelief. In someway it also didn't surprise him. It had to be Amelia's doing, he knew for sure. Rose followed him towards his kitchen and poured them another glass of wine.

"But why are you so shocked by this, Jack? Your family is close with the Huntingtons am I right? And apart from that I can really use the money."

"It's just that..."

"That what, Jack?"

"The night my sister had her baby, Amelia and I had a slight disagreement. And I might have mentioned her encounter with Mr. Hockley. I didn't say your name or anything, but she is a clever woman."

"Is she suspecting anything about us?"

He shrugged his shoulders. "I am not quite sure."

She took his hand in hers and kissed them. "You shouldn't worry, Jack. I will mingle my way out of it if she starts questioning things. I will not let your reputation be ruined by someone like me."

"What?" He pulled his hands back and looked her up and down. Confused, Rose took a step back.

"Jack, I know the life you're living in." She said, "well not exactly, but I know if people find out about us your reputation will be ruined. Isn't that what this is all about?"

The realization that this situation was getting more complicated by the minute suddenly hit him hard. He couldn't care less about what the outside world would think of him, he knew he was able to find a way out of it. But her. His love. Knowing the cruelty of others, especially his family, he wanted to protect her. What would they do to her if their affair came to the surface. And we will get married whether you like it or not! Amelia's words sounded like thunder. Banging from one side of his brain to the other. He felt Rose's eyes still flaming on his skin, begging him for an answer. He only shook his head.

"I think it is just best if you don't go there for work. I can ask my grandmother to have a look around for you if you really need an extra job. There will probably be one of her acquaintances in need for a new dress."

"Now you are just being mean to me, Jack." Rose protested, "I will not have you tell me who I can work for and who not. Listen, I won't give us away, but if you don't trust me with that, you should have thought about it much sooner before we got involved with each other."

"It is not that I don't trust you, Rose. If there is anyone in this world whom I trust it is you. It is them I don't trust and their need of power and control. It is my fear of what they can do to you!"

"What on earth would they be able to do to me, Jack? I am already nothing. I cannot turn into anything less than I already am. You know, I have often wondered why I wanted to keep seeing you and continue on with this because at first it didn't make any sense in my head. Only I found out that, in fact, love doesn't make any sense whatsoever."

"Love?" He now finally managed to face her.

"Yes," She sighed out loud, "I love you, Jack. I have tried to deny it, but I can't. I want to scream it out loud on the streets if it were possible, but also that I cannot do. So if it means having to love you silently for the rest of my life, so be it." She took her coat of the hatstand and opened the door.

"You're not staying here?" He was all he was able to say. He slowly moved closer and hoped that she would make up her mind. He felt like a coward.

Rose shook her head. "I have to be up early for Julie's wedding tomorrow. And just for your information; I am going to work for Mrs and miss Huntington whether you want it or not. We can make this situation as difficult as we both want to. And I believe we can also manage this just fine. Goodnight." Closing the door behind her, Jack was now left alone in the coldness of his apartment.
