14. Chapter 14: ARGUS

Chapter 14: Advanced Research Group United Support (ARGUS)

ARGUS is a complex organization in DCU. It is simpler in the Arrowverse, but not by much. I think that this organization became a catch all for intelligence agencies. For this story, I mainly used Arrowverse!ARGUS. However, that organization is very flawed. For example, a secret organization doing a secret covert infiltration on Lian Yu decides that a daytime parachute infiltration is the BEST option. Seriously! IT'S AN ISLAND. Use a damn boat.

ORIGIN:

ARGUS was originally formed by US Government to deal with specific threats to the US. These threats include; the League of Assassins, HIVE, Shadowspire, and the Church of Blood. However, under Director Waller, their mandate expanded. It now includes any known US threat as determined by Director Waller. Some opportunistic people took this to mean economic as well as a physical threat. They also took the term threat very liberally. For example: Grumpy Cat is a threat because he gave me a mean look.

This opened the organization to corruption and abuse. Director Waller did not discourage this new attitude because it gave her additional means to blackmail a variety of politicians, government officials, law enforcement, powerful corporations, and basically everyone.

MOTIVATION:

ARGUS is motivated to ensure the safety of US citizens as a whole. However, they do not feel obligated to worry about a specific US citizen inside or outside the US country boundaries. Under Director Waller, that motivation became even vaguer. It was more about protecting ARGUS interests as defined by Waller than US interests. Waller uses blackmail and threats to enforce her will on the people in her agency. Most of the people under her authority are terrified of her. Waller feels justified using criminals, torture, threats, and blackmail to advance her interests.

NOTES:

I found that the ARGUS displayed in the Arrowverse is a perfect example of a US Government organization that was given little to no oversight and way too much power to do what they thought was right to protect American interests. Too often those interests are not the US or American, but one selfish man's interests.

This is why the US government has checks and balances. Every single person is accountable to someone. DCU!ARGUS and Arrowverse!ARGUS have little to no accountability. The few times Director Waller reported to someone, she was lying or falsifying documentation to cover up her true motives.

In my mind, this makes Waller an Evil Source. I actually resent authors who try to justify her actions. I blame the comics for portraying Waller as a person who is NEEDED to make the hard decisions. Sheeple should know better. We need ethics and morality and for Batman to kill the damn Joker already!
