Civilian Sensei: Chapter 06

Naruto was looking out the window of the classroom while he waited for Iruka-Sensei to arrive.

This was probably the last time that he would sit here. Today was the day that the teams were chosen and a sensei was assigned to them.

"Wh- what teammates do you think you will have, Naruto-kun?" He heard a voice beside him.

He turned his eyes from the window and saw that it was Hinata. Her emotions were as nervous as always when he was near her.

He still didn't know why she was so nervous around him. It wasn't like some of the villagers who were nervous but also scared around him. She was just... he didn't even know what it was.

Taking his head out of those thoughts, he considered her question.

He had thought about the subject last night. According to Braith, each team was selected with a role in mind. Some teams were for frontal assaults, others were trackers, and so on.

If he thought about his abilities, he could be in a tracker team for his sensory abilities or assault for his fighting capabilities and huge chakra reserves.

He could also work in interrogation for his ability to sense other people's emotions but Braith-Neesan didn't want other people to find out that he could do that. The only one who knew about it, apart from him and Braith, was the Hokage.

But about the matter at hand, he supposed he could be a teammate of pretty much any classmate because of his wide variety of skills.

Anyone except Sasuke and Sakura, that was. They were the Rocky and Kunoichi of this year's graduation and those people are always paired with the dead-last, which was Kiba.

Naruto thought it was for the best. He didn't think that he could do a good team with any of them. Kiba was too confrontational, Sakura was too much of a fangirl and Sasuke was too much of... a dick.

He looked at where Sasuke was sitting at saw that he was in the middle of Sakura and Ino, two of his most hardcore fangirls. And of course, paying attention to neither of them.

Good luck to the Sensei that was assigned to him.

"N-Naruto-kun?" Asked Hinata, making him realize that he hadn't answered her yet.

"Sorry, just lost in thought," He said, rubbing the back of his head. "Well, I don't know, it could be anyone, really," he said. Then he smiled at her. "Maybe we will be on the same team, Hinata," he said, making her blush.

Before any of them could say anything else, the door of the classroom opened up.

"Alright everyone, pay attention," Iruka-sensei said as he entered the room.

Naruto noted that he entered alone, without Mizuki-Sensei. How curious.

After Naruto told Braith-Neesan about how the teacher told him about an alleged secret test, he just forgot about him. Now, he wondered what happened.

Not that it was important. Mizuki was a lousy teacher who hated his guts. As far as Naruto was concerned if he never saw him again, he would be a happy man.

"Now," Iruka continued talking. "I will inform all of you what Sensei and teammates you have been assigned to. Those teams have been selected by the Hokage, so they can't be changed. Now Team 1..." and as he started saying each team, the Senseis were entering the classroom.

Naruto waited eager for his name to be called. He wondered who his Sensei would be. Maybe a super strict Jōnin who would work them to the bone? Or a disciplined one that would make them follow the rules to the letter?

He just hoped that whoever it was, he didn't have anything against him. He had Braith-Neesan, so he could get his training elsewhere but having a team leader that treat him like crap would really suck.

Finally, Iruka-Sensei called his name.

"Team 7 will consist of Sasuke Uchiha," Mr. Sunshine didn't say anything. "Sakura Haruno," Sakura cheered at this, laughing at Ino. "...and Naruto Uzumaki. Your teacher will be Kakashi Hatake," Iruka said, turning his eyes to him.

Naruto was baffled at this. Did he just...? No, no, he probably heard wrong.

"Um, Iruka-Sensei," he said standing up." Could you repeat the last name? I think I am hearing things," he said, praying that he heard wrong.

Iruka sighed at this.

"No, Naruto you heard correctly. Your teammates will be Sakura and Sasuke, and before you start complaining," he said, lifting his hand to stop him from talking. "Know that, while normally your two teammates would be paired with the dead-last, in this case, Kiba," this one groaned when he heard someone call him that. "In this opportunity, the Hokage thought that your abilities would complement better between the three of you," he said to the crestfallen Naruto.

Despite her words, Naruto didn't feel better. In fact, he was more confused than before.

'What abilities is he talking about? Not being a dick to everyone around you?' He thought while thinking about Sasuke. 'Being capable of greeting someone without punching say person?' And this time about Sakura.

Still, he didn't protest. He didn't because he knew that it would be useless. If Jiji decided this, there was nothing that he could do about it. Well, he could go whine to him about this issue, but not only he would not succeed, but he also knew that Braith-Neesan would punish him for that. Still, it was tenting.

While he was having this thought, he noted that the rest of the assignments had been finalized and the rest of the teams were starting to depart.

Beside him, he looked as Hinata got up.

"Go-goodbye Naruto-kun, good luck," she said as she started to depart.

He smiled brightly at this.

"Thanks, Hinata, you too," he said to her, making her blush once more.

Once she and most of the students exited the room, only he and his two teammates remained.

He wondered where his new sensei was. He should be here by now.

Maybe he had a mission? No, if that was the case they would have been told.

'I am sure he would arrive at any moment,' He thought as he observed how Sakura tried, and failed, to invite Sasuke to a date.

'Well,' he thought amused at this. 'At least I have something entertaining to see while we waited.'

After all, how long could their teacher take to arrive?

Three hours late

Naruto was grinding his teeth. His patient was at his end.

'Where the hell is he!?' He furiously though.

They have been waiting for three hours. Three!

He could sense the emotions of his teammates and he could see that they weren't feeling any better. They were as upset as he was.

Sakura had stopped pestering Sasuke about an hour ago and tried to wait patiently for their Sensei. But by the second hour, Naruto could feel that she was full of indignation and anger. He saw that she was clenching her desk so hard that it was starting to break.

Sasuke was not much better. His body didn't show many reactions, except for his eyes twitching. But inside him, he was feeling pretty pissed too.

'This is ridicule, he should be here by now,' Naruto thought. 'If he doesn't arrive in the next ten minutes, I am out of here, I don't care what he said,' he thought determined.

Just as the ten-minute mark was about to pass, Naruto felt another presence nearby.

"Someone is coming," he said out loud, surprising his teammates.

Sasuke looked at him with narrow eyes.

"And how would you know that dobe?" He asked, with clear doubt in his voice.

"I am a sensor, that is how," he answered without thinking, stunning his teammates. He didn't notice this, though, he was too concentrated on the feelings of the arriving person.

And this person's feelings were... complicated.

There was pain and regret, but also... hope. it was very weird.

A few moments later, the door opened and a man entered.

He had spiky silver hair oriented to his left side, dark grey eyes, and a lazy expression, on his face. Well, what he could see of his face. Most of it was covered by a mask.

He was wearing a flak jacket, dark blue pants, and a long-sleeve shirt. He also wears fingerless gloves with metal plates on the backhand and a chain necklace underneath.

He looked at the three of them and lazily raised his hand.

"Yo, sorry for the delay, a black cat crossed my path, so I have to take the long way around," he said, making their eyes twitch.

'What the hell!' Naruto thought. 'Not only did he arrive three hours late, but he also gave us a lame excuse?!'

This was going to suck.

Kakashi was sitting on the roof, looking at his three potential students.

"OK, why don't we start with the presentation?" He asked the three teenagers.

"What do you want to know?" The blonde one asked.

Kakashi shrugged.

"You know, what you like and don't like, hobbies, dreams for the future, that kind of stuff," he responded.

"Why don't you show us how, sensei," the only girl in the group asked.

"Who, me?," Kakashi asked. "My name is Kakashi Hatake and I don't want to tell you all what I like or don't like. Dreams for the future...? Well, I have a lot of hobbies," he said making his students sweatdrop.

'That's it? He only told us his name,' he could hear them thinking.

He gave them a lazy one-eye smile.

"Don't get upset, my cute little Genins. I am a Jōnin, and most of my personal information is classified. So even if I want to, I couldn't tell you" she told them, to which they frowned.

"Now is your turn. Let us start with you, blondy," he said looking at him. This one scoffed at his nickname.

"Ok, my name is Naruto Uzumaki. The things that I like are Ramen, Braith-Neesan, Iruka-Sensei and Jiji. I don't like the three minutes that take to cock ramen. My dream..." Kakashi almost smiled at the list.

'It seems that he had the same taste for ramen that Kushina-Nee," he thought with fondness.

"...Is to become Hokage and have all the village acknowledge me! And make Braith-Neesan proud!" he said with a smile.

Kakashi's eyes widened at this before setting in a pensive look.

'He grew up well,' he thought.

But before he could say anything else, someone interrupted.

"Kep dreaming, Naruto. Just because by some miracle you didn't end up as the dead-last, doesn't mean that you could become Hokage. The only one who could achieve that is a genius like Sasuke-Kun. Right, Sasuke-Kun?" she asked, looking dreamily at the black-haired boy, who didn't respond.

"Oh, yeah?" Said Naruto. "Why don't you tell us your dream? You know, besides raping Mr. Sunshine over here," he said, receiving in response two glares for his words.

Kakashi just sighed at this. 'It seems that it will be difficult to teach them about teamwork,' he thought.

"Now, now," he said, diffusing the situation. "Why don't we let your other teammate tell us about himself?" He asked them, looking at the other boy.

He was wearing a black undershirt with a purple, short-sleeved jacket, a necklace with the Uchiha Clan crest, a bracelet on his left arm, green pants, and traditional Leaf Village-styled sandals. He had an emotional expression.

With a scowl on his face, he started.

"My name is Sasuke Uchiha. There are several things that I don't like and there is nothing specific that I like. And I don't want to use the word 'dream', but..." His eyes narrowed. "I have an ambition. To resurrect my clan and..." Naruto could face an overwhelming hate coming from him. "To kill a certain man," he finishes saying.

'So cool' Sakura thought.

'How much hate,' Naruto thought.

"Vengeance, eh," Kakashi thought with narrow eyes. 'This would be more difficult than I thought,' he said to himself.

Kakashi crossed his arms and looked at the last member of his team.

"Finally, the girl. Your turn pinky," he said, making her scowl.

"Well, my name is Sakura Haruno. The thing that I like the most is," she blushed, trying not to look at a certain dark-haired boy. "Well, the person that I like the most is," her blush intensified. "My dream for the future," she covered her face with her arms. "Oh, god!" She practically squell.

"..." Kakashi didn't know what to say.

"The thing that I hate the most," she said looking at the blonde. "Is Naruto!" She said with an annoyed tone.

"Yeah, and I can't tell you how that breaks my heart," Naruto responded sarcastically.

Sakura just ignored him.

"My hobbies are..." she said turning her eyes at Sasuke.

"... stalking a certain Uchiha." Naruto finished for her. "Oh yeah, your goals are so Shinobi-like," he said, mocking her.

"Why you...!" Sakura said, indignant.

Kakashi just sighed at this.

'Girls her age are more interested in boys than training,' he thought.

He cleared his throat to get their attention.

"Alright, that is enough. Now before we continue, there is something that you should know," he said getting their attention. "You three are not Genin yet," he said, surprising them.

"What do you mean Sensei?" Asked Naruto. "We have already graduated from the academy."

"Oh, that? That was to discard the ones who had absolutely no chance of becoming one. The ones that graduated, are subject to a survival test that would evaluate if you have what it takes to become Ninjas. If you fail, you get sent back to the academy for another year," his student looked at him with shock on their faces.

'So that is why Braith-Neesan didn't tell him anything yesterday!' Naruto thought. "Well that, and because she was too busy punishing me for that last prank," he trembled when he remembered his punishment.

"Now, be in the training ground 7 at 5:00 am. Don't be late," He said as he started to leave. "Oh, and I suggest you don't eat breakfast. You will probably end up throwing," Kakashi finished saying before jumping from the roof.

The three teenagers remained on the roof, each one with different thoughts.

'Throw up? Isn't that too dangerous?' Sakura thought. 'But if I fail this test, they will separate me from Sasuke-sun. This is love's test!' She thought, determinate.

Sasuke simply got up and walked away.

'This must not be a regular test. I better consult it with Braith-Neesan," he thought as he started running toward the shop. He then thought of his team. "Maybe she could convince Jiji to put me on another team," he said out loud.

"Braith-Neesan!" He shouted as he walked into the shop.

"Oh Naru," she said, sitting behind the counter. "How was your day? Did they tell your new teammates?" She asked with a smile, looking at him with her unique eyes.

He rapidly approached the counter and looked at her with an annoyed look.

"You knew, right?" He asked her. "You knew about the test, that is why you didn't tell me yesterday about the role that the Uzumaki play in the village," he said, pointing at her.

She chuckled at him.

"Of course, I knew about it. I even talked about it with Saru yesterday before you came home," she said, making his eyebrow raise.

Naruto wasn't all that surprised that she knew. She has been alive for a long time. And trained more than one person.

Still, if she talked to the Hokage, then maybe...

"Did you know who were going to be my teammates?" He asked with narrow eyes.

"Yes," she responded, as one clone carried a tray with tea. "I am sorry about that. I know you don't get along with them," she said as she drank a sip of tea.

Naruto's shoulder dropped. He had hoped that she could convince Jiji to change teammates, but if they had already talked between them about the subject and he still had the same teammates, then it would be pointless.

Naruto took the cup of tea that she offered him.

They stay in silence for a few minutes, enjoying the tea.

"Um Braith-Neesan?" Naruto asked. "Do you know anything about tomorrow's test?" he said.

She remained quiet for a few moments before saying.

"Yes, Naru I do, but I won't tell you what about it," she said.

"Eh, why not?" He asked, surprised.

She had always helped him study for the academy's test. Why wouldn't she do the same this time?

"You are not a kid anymore Naru," she said, looking him in the eyes. "You had studied and trained hard to get to this point, and thanks to that, you had proven that you have the potential to graduate. Now this is the final step to being a Ninja. If you pass this test, you will demonstrate to all the people who bet against you that they were wrong. And to do that, you have to pass this test alone, without me holding your hand," Braith finished saying.

Naruto remained quiet. He thought of all the sweat and blood that he had spilled to get to this point. It had been a long year but he had made it.

But all this was with the help of Braith. While it was true that it was he who had trained, it was thanks to her help that he had gotten to this point. Could he pass this final test without her help?

As if sensing his thought, Braith said.

"For what is worth Naru," she said, as he raised his eyes. "I believe in you," she said as she caressed his head.

He blushed when she said that. Even after all this time, he still wasn't used to people cheering for him.

Still, it was just what he needed to hear. He will pass this test, and he will become a Ninja. It was the least he could do to meet the expectations of this amazing woman.

"Don't worry Braith-Neesan, I will pass this test without problems!" He exclaimed, smiling at her.

Braith returned the smile.

"I am glad to hear this Naru. Now, I have to close the shop. Meanwhile, why don't you start making dinner?" She said as she got up and walked to the front of the shop.

"Okay, no problem," he said as he started going to the back of the shop.

"Naru," she said before he could walk away.

He looked at her.

"Look underneath the underneath," she said.

He tilted his head in confusion.

"What?" He asked.

"That is a sentence that your new instructor believes in. Look underneath the underneath. When you take the test tomorrow, you should keep that in mind," she said as she turned around and started walking away.

Naruto, just looked at her retreat form, wondering what that was about.

He won't discover the meaning of those words until the next day during the test.

The three teenagers were sitting on the grass in training ground 7 near three wooden posts, waiting for their instructor to arrive.

They had been waiting for the last two hours and they were pretty irritated with their new sensei.

One thing was to arrive late yesterday, he might have been returning from a mission, even if he had given them such a ridiculous excuse

But this time he had decided the moment of the meeting and he still arrived late.

Would it be the same thing every day if they managed to pass the test?

Naruto hoped not, because if it was, he might go crazy.

Just as he was wondering if he could do some training while he waited, his sensei appeared.

"You are late!" Naruto and Sakura yelled.

"Hello, kids, sorry I am late. I have to help an old lady to carry her groceries," he said as he lazily waved at them.

Naruto's eyes twitch at these words. At this rate, he would end up killing the guy, if only to release some stress.

"Now," he said as he put a clock on one of the trunks. "It's set for noon," Kakashi said as he took off his pocket two bells.

The teenagers looked at the bells with inquisitive looks.

"Here are two bells," he said, making them tinkle. "Your goal is to take them off me before the alarm goes off. If you don't, you will fail the test and not only will you be sent back to the academy but also be tied to the trunk while the rest of us eat in front of said person," he said as he tied the bells to his waist.

At those words, more than one stomach grunted.

'So that is why he told us not to eat,' two of them thought.

Kakashi looked at the third student with narrowed eyes.

"You eat your breakfast," it wasn't a question.

Naruto just grinned at him.

"Of course I did. What kind of idiot goes to training with an empty stomach?" He said, earning glares from the other two teenagers.

"Despite my order to not eat?" Kakashi asked with a glint in his eye.

"You didn't order us anything. You just suggested we didn't eat breakfast," Naruto responded, with a sly smile.

Kakashi only looked at him for a brief moment before nodding.

"At least one of you could look underneath the underneath," he said, surprising the other two students.

Internally, Naruto was relieved. True be told, it was not that he looked beneath anything.

He just woke up and walked half-sleep to make breakfast for himself and Braith-Neesan without thinking too much about it.

It was about halfway through eating it when he noted the amusing look that Braith was sending him. When he asked her what was so funny, she reminded him about the instruction from Kakashi-sensei.

He had spent most of the morning and the two hours he made them wait thinking of a credible excuse. The rest of the time he spent it praying that he would be able to put on a good show.

As Braith-Neesan always said, confidence is the key to making other people believe your lies.

While he was having these thoughts, Sakura said.

"Wait Sensei, there are only two bells," she pointed out.

"Correct, which means that at least one of you would go back to the academy," Kakashi said.

Naruto narrowed his eyes at his words. The emotions of Kakashi-sensei didn't much his words. He was hiding something, but what?

"Now," Kakashi continued. "You are free to attack me with any weapon or jutsu that you know. You won't succeed unless you come at me with the intent to kill," he said, carefreely.

"But," Naruto asked. "Won't that be dangerous?" He asked worried.

Kakashi looked at him for a second, before shocking his head.

"And here I thought you have potential," he said, making Naruto growl. "But, oh well," he said at the other two. "Let's just ignore the idiot and start when I tell you," he said, making Naruto even more furious.

'So an idiot, eh,' he thought, while he took a kunai. 'I will show you!' he said as he started throwing it at Kakashi.

"Eh?" Sakura said, surprised.

But before Naruto could release his weapon, he felt an air stream fly past him and suddenly, he felt a hand stop the one that had the kunai and bent it behind his noggin while another one grabbed his head.

Sweet started forming behind Naruto's head when he felt the tip of the kunai touching the back of his head.

"Easy," said Kakashi behind him. "I didn't tell you to start yet," he lazily said.

'Impossible,' Sakura thought. 'I didn't even see him move.'

'So this is a Jōnin,' Sasuke thought smirking.

"So, it seems that you are prepared to attack me with the intention to kill," he said.

Sakura smiled nervously.

"Hehe, I'm starting..." Naruto and Sasuke smirked. "to like you guys," Kakashi said. "Okay, here we go. Ready... Go!" He said and the three students dispersed.

Kakashi stood in the clearing, thinking of the several wanna-be Genin that he had evaluated before.

None of them had managed to pass the test.

"Would the third time be the charm? Or will they end up like all the others before?" He said to himself as he waited for them to finish hiding. "Well, only one way to find out."

Hope you liked it.
