So I'm back again after leaving you guys hanging for one, two, five, just over six months. Ooops. I blame it on the stats feature being down. This chapter was inspired by James's video on youtube called Love U Sober. You should really watch it. It really explains a lot.
Three months after that show where James had proposed on stage, it was after a show in New York, Kylie's phone lit up with a new series of photos from James. She scrolled through the photos he had sent specifically to her and then got a notification that he had posted new photos to his social media with the tag Brotrip to Dubai. If she hadn't seen the photos from his messages already, she would have guessed it would have been him and Carlos but the pictures had just been of him and Kendall. While it was a bit surprising, she figured it was a sign of them growing up or, at the very least, them bonding before the wedding. Of course, those photos made her miss him and had a song playing in her head as she signed autographs on the way to the bus. Once she was comfortable in her bunk on the bus, she pulled out a notepad and began scribbling down the lyrics playing over and over in her head.
She gave the lyrics to Gustavo as they stopped in Maine for their next show. He read through them and nodded and got to work on the new song.
James was in London with Carlos when said boy plopped down next to him. "This hit the internet this morning," Carlos said, handing James his phone. James watched the new music video from Kylie then checked the song title. 'Days Like These'. James stared at the screen pondering what it meant. "Don't think about it too hard. I'm sure Gustavo just wrote it or something," Carlos said, taking his phone back.
But James couldn't stop thinking about it. So he called Gustavo to talk about his idea and while the producer wasn't completely sure about the idea, he did agree to let James hire a writer and producer to put together a new song and film a video for it. When Gustavo received the video two days later as well as getting word that Griffin had received the master copy of it, he came up with an idea to release it to the world. He called James. "How soon can you get to Vermont?" Gustavo asked.
"I'm in New York. You want me to drive?" James answered.
"You can fly a helicopter, can't you?"
"I'll be there in under two hours," James said. They hashed out the rest of the details, and Kylie got set up for her concert not knowing about Gustavo's surprise.
As her concert drew to a close, she heard Gustavo in her ear. "Introduce the music video. It's a new one," he said.
"We're going to do things a little different tonight so for your viewing and listening pleasure, a new music video. I hope—" Kylie was cut off by Gustavo's voice again.
"Never before seen," Gustavo told her.
Kylie huffed. "Enjoy this brand new, never before seen music video. Hit it, G-man." She stepped back to where Lefty was set up, stage right, and turned her attention to the big screen that had dropped from the back of the stage as a hush fell over the crowd.
The notes coming out of the speakers didn't remind her of any song she remembered recording but they had been in the studio a lot so maybe it was an added intro that she hadn't heard yet. The music went quiet and a phone dinged as a text message appeared on the screen. Then a few more followed.
Kylie glanced at Lefty wondering if he knew anything about it. His attention was on the screen though and his face revealed nothing. She frowned, not liking that she couldn't read him. She focused back on the video.
The theme of the texts would fit with her new song called 'Days Like These' about a couple missing each other despite knowing why they couldn't be together, but it wasn't the video they had released so she wondered if Gustavo had just redone it thinking no one had liked the other one. The original video they had done had her sitting at a desk looking out a window and alternatively flipping through a photo album that had pictures of her and James. Scenes of that were spliced between scenes of her staring at her phone on the tour bus and scenes of her singing in front of a green screen that they had edited in post-production to look like she was on stage.
In the video now playing on screen, a blonde came on screen walking towards what looked like a private jet. The camera stayed behind the girl, not showing her face, as she got on the jet and stared out the window until the plane took off. The camera then focused on a sports car driven by a brunet who was fiddling with the radio dials until he finally settled on one station with music coming from the speakers. The driver got to the airfield just as the lyrics started and those were not her lyrics. Heck, it wasn't even her voice, but she recognized it. It was confirmed by the words across the screen. "James Diamond in 'Since Last November'" flashed across the black screen. A cheer shot through the crowd.
This time she flat-out stared at Lefty who was steadfastly ignoring her. Kylie rolled her eyes and went back to watching the new video.
The words had disappeared and James's voice continued singing as the camera rounded the car the driver had just parked and the driver climbed out. Now she could tell that James was also starring in the music video. The camera followed James as he boarded a helicopter and flew across the changing landscape to land on top of a hotel and then he boarded an elevator. Between shots of the helicopter were shots of him and a blonde girl dancing both in the rain and at a club though you still couldn't see her face. The screen went dark for a moment as James leaned back against the elevator wall after finishing the second chorus. Instead of the video continuing, a lift lowered from the top of the stage and the crowd screamed as James stepped off of it singing the third lyric.
Kylie stared at him in shock. He was actually there in person. She wasn't sure why or how but she could tell her audience loved it. James smiled at her as he finished the song to the tune of the screaming crowd.
Finally, her voice came back. "The wonderful and talented man who needs no introduction, James Diamond, everyone," she told the crowd. The crowd cheered for him. She really appreciated that her fans loved her fiancé too. She knew that didn't always happen. Most of the time, crossing the genres led to bad things or people turning on you. Her fans on the other hand really seemed to support her and James not only as a couple but also as artists and she knew that nearly half of her fans were also fans of James and Big Time Rush as a whole.
James grinned and took a bow as his music faded out. He motioned to his fiancé. "Thank you all. You are always a great crowd to sing for and I love it. Give it up for the wonderful Kylie Knight," James said. Again, the crowd cheered.
"Thank you all so very much for coming out. We really do appreciate all of you being here," Kylie said.
As they took their final bows, a chant rippled through the crowd. "Duet, duet, duet, duet."
"What do you think, James?" she asked. She looked at him carefully. She really wanted to sing with him but didn't want to push him to do anything he didn't want to.
He grinned at her. "I'm game if you are." The way he was smiling at her made her smile right back. She was definitely marrying the right man.
"So, Ella or Lion." She couldn't think of another duet that they both knew that wouldn't seem repetitive so going classic movie duet was good enough for her. Usually, their duets fell to either Reba or Dolly, despite James's lack of country music knowledge.
"Um ... Either one is far back but I'm feeling the love, can you feel it?" he asked. So, he was going Lion King on her then. She could work with that.
"Oh, I definitely do. Lefty, can you feel the love?"
The keyboardist grinned. "Of course it had to be a love song on piano but I'll do my best to live up to the great Elton John," Lefty reluctantly agreed.
"Can you feel the love tonight? The peace the evening brings. The world for once in perfect harmony, with all its living things." Kylie sang as the song started. James joined in on Simba's lines as he took her hand and pulled her to his side. "Stealing through the night's uncertainties, love is where they are." She finished as the song came to an end. The crowd roared with applause and they soaked it up. They thanked the crowd again and went backstage. "So, why come visit and how long have you been in Vermont?" Kylie asked after handing over the mic to Gustavo and pulling James out of the way of everyone packing up their supplies.
"Two hours and because I guess I missed you. Just over three years ago, I let you go to chase Lucy and it was the worst decision I ever made but ever since last November I've known that there is no one else for me. Plus, Gustavo had that idea." James nodded to the stage. He wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her close.
She rested her arms on his shoulders. "That's not how that ends?" She motioned to the stage in reference to the music video.
"No," he answered. "The elevator stops on one of the floors and I walk down to the room. When I get there, I finish the third verse. It splices in more clips of the club and the video ends with her opening the door."
"Never shows her face?" she asked, trying not to show her concern. It wasn't that she felt threatened. It was a standard thing to hire an actor for music videos but for some reason, this one just rubbed her the wrong way. She wasn't even sure why.
James smiled softly. "No. We wanted it to kind of mirror you and me. You know, the blonde, you don't see her face. For all they know, it could be you."
"I guess, but that was not my butt nor do I wear those kinda shoes."
"They were heels. You've worn heels before to include nearly every time you go to the office and meet my mom."
"Yeah, but never on a plane."
"If you don't like it, Gustavo said he wouldn't post it." He reached out and twisted a piece of her blonde hair around his finger.
"It's not that, I think I like it ..." She swallowed and looked away, unable to continue.
"How about," he said softly, "if I show you the whole video and then you can think it over?"
"Ok, I like that." He gently squeezed her and kissed her cheek. She smiled softly.
"You two coming?" Cowboy called, closing his guitar case. Kylie nodded and they went out to the bus. Kylie watched the video a few times through, both with and without the music and did agree to post it. The feedback on it was great. Most everyone thought it was an amazing and sweet video and the song was shooting up the charts. James stayed with her for a few nights before he flew back to California.
About a month or so later, Kendall coerced his sister to fly to Hawaii with him where they spent most of their time on a beach. One afternoon, after binge watching a couple movies, Kendall turned to her, sitting up to give her his complete focus. "So fess up. What's going on in that head of yours?" he asked.
"I don't know what you're talking about," Kylie protested, not bothering to move from her slouched position.
"Yes, you do, even without the twin telepathy. This is me you're talking to, not Mom or Katie."
"K-dog," she warned.
"Tinkerbell," he answered in the same tone.
Kylie rolled her eyes. She sat up and turned to look at him full on. A lot was going on behind those cool, green eyes but he had never once judged her or made her feel bad for any thoughts she had. The only time he had made her feel bad was when she had been going through therapy for what their father had done to her, made her feel like her friends hadn't needed her and didn't want her around, but that was only because the last therapist they had encountered during their parents' divorce had tried to convince them that nothing had happened and their father wasn't a bad man. Kendall had become wary of therapy ever since. She decided to put that aside and focus instead on what she was feeling. "Fear is healthy. Supposedly. But ... Am I crazy for not wanting to rush into marriage?"
"No and not just because you're my sister. Marriage is scary and with our parents I wouldn't be surprised if you were put off ever getting married. I think you're really brave, to even just consider marriage. If you're not ready to say "I do" yet, then there are two options. Plan a wedding without finalizing everything and if that still scares you, then perhaps just try living with him, just the two of you, and maybe that will help. You've only been engaged for four months, there's really no reason to rush into anything. This doesn't need to be a Hollywood wedding."
"Why do you have a plan for everything?"
"What use would I be if I didn't?"
"You'd still be my brother and I'd still love you."
"Ok. Stop getting mushy on me." He shoved her a bit and they both laughed. She shoved him back and he slouched back down on the couch.
"Play the next movie," she told him. She flopped against him and he hit the play button on the remote.
When they got back, the first thing Griffin did was pull her into the office and hand her a magazine without saying anything. Hawaii Heartbreak was the title splashed across the front page. Kylie plopped down in a chair and flipped to the near center of the magazine to see another headline. BIG TIME IN TROUBLE? She looked back up at Griffin but he just motioned to the article. Kylie rolled her eyes but turned her attention back to the article.
Fun in the sun on the big island could spell trouble for the recently engaged James Diamond. Less than four months ago the Since Last November hitmaker was down on one knee in front of his longtime on-again/off-again girlfriend, Kylie Knight. Sources close to the couple state that it is only a matter of time before it's a white dress and flowers that dominate their dreams. That dream may have hit a snag this weekend when the blonde was spotted on a tropical getaway with a man who was not her intended.
The rumors flew when the clearly not-James, sandy blond was spotted leaning close, sharing meals, and even returning to the same luxury hotel. The couple was even spotted leaving a local bar where sources claim the couple burned it up on the dance floor. Kylie didn't have to read any further when she saw the pictures. There were grainy photos of her and Kendall on the beach taken from behind. Pictures of them at a restaurant with her eating off his plate, something they had done since they were toddlers. Even pictures of them taken from a distance entering the hotel with his hand on the small of her back and their hats pulled down low. But off all of these photos, not a single one of them had captured the "not-James, sandy blond's" face.
Kylie shut the magazine and stared at the cover for a moment or two. It had a picture of her and James on the front, but it had a jagged tear between them like a photo that had been ripped in half. Those two photos of them weren't even from the same day. "Do you actually believe these bold-faced lies from a money-grabbing magazine who couldn't be bothered taking a picture of the guy's face?" Kylie asked softly. She looked up at her record CEO who had always been more of a father figure than a boss. She really wanted—no, needed to know if he really believed in them despite the fact that he had been involved in most of the planning of their Hawaiian trip. Kendall had gotten the CEO to set everything up even if Kendall had paid for the trip himself.
Griffin sighed as he folded his hands on the desk in front of him. "This isn't about what I believe. This is about what those Rushers will do if they believe them," Griffin answered.
"Uh—" Kylie stopped and frowned. She sighed and stared down at the cover photo again. She let her eyes trace every inch of her fiancé's face then let her eyes wander the room. There had to be something she could do to fix this or at the very least get the spotlight off of her. She could outright just post that it was Kendall and her but that didn't seem like a good idea. Then another idea came to her. She smirked as she pulled out her phone and pulled up the original article online. Then she copied the link into her Skuttlebutter page and typed a few tags above it. quote James, brotrip, show his face. The photo that was in the thumbnail of the article was a photo of her and Kendall on the beach, sitting in beach chairs with their heads together. The problem with the photo is that it was taken from a distance behind them so all you could really see was them with their heads together as they faced the ocean. If you looked really closely at the photo, you could just see she had her arm thrown up and was taking a selfie of the two of them.
She looked back up at Griffin and grinned. "Let me guess, you just solved it?" Griffin asked.
"Maybe but come on, true Rushers know that I would never hurt James. That I can't."
"This is the downfall of being famous. You know that. I just don't want anything to happen to you." He really looked concerned and her mind flashed back over the last five years. The one that really stuck out in her memory was just before the Tween Choice Awards where Carlos and the boys had met Alexa and had proven that Sharkus was trying to take over the world. Just before then, Griffin had learned that Kylie had a stalker and there was a threat of something really bad happening to Kylie. Griffin had been taken seriously even if he didn't really believe the guy would go so far as to do serious harm to Kylie. Griffin had done everything in his power to protect her, including going as far as to ban her from going to the awards' show and basically grounding her so as to not risk her life. She, of course, had no idea about the threat until at the afterparty when they had caught the man trying to get into the Palm Woods. Griffin had told her basically the same thing that night, that he refused to take chances with her life and he wasn't going to let anything happen to her if he could prevent it.
Kylie relaxed slightly. "I know. And I appreciate it and everything you've done for me, I just wish people understood my relationship with him is the best thing in my life and I could never ruin it," she told him as her phone let off a tone for a Skuttlebutter notification. She checked it and opened the app. She held it up for Griffin to see. "How dare you treat my sissy that way. brotrip, show his face," she read from the Skutt-butt. "See? Even Carlos is defending me."
"I know and that means a lot." Griffin was cut off when the tone went off again.
She looked at it then showed it to Griffin. "Logan: No way she'd cheat. show his face, brotrip. It's gotta be true if Logan says it," Kylie said.
"It's the internet, it's clearly not always true."
"Maybe." The tone went off again. This time it was from James. "James: show his face, never worried. Does that help?" If James wasn't worried then no one else should have been. Kylie hadn't been raised to cheat or lie, unless she was playing poker and that wasn't the case here. She'd never do anything to hurt James. She may have been scared to marry him but there was no way she could ever hurt him.
"A little more than the others. What's your plan if this doesn't work?" Griffin asked, drawing her attention back to the situation at hand.
Kylie avoided his gaze as she lowered her phone to her lap and locked it. She really didn't know. She wondered if putting out a photo of her and Kendall would do anything. On the one hand, they did say a picture was worth a thousand words but on the other, with technology being the way it was, there was always a chance that people would say it was photoshopped so it wasn't real and they would still think she was a cheater. She really didn't need her relationship with her fans or his when he backed her going down in flames. James really did deserve better than that. "I don't know. I know there are going to be people who don't believe me no matter what I say." She paused trying to think of what else to say. "Part of me, the part that sounds suspiciously like my mother says, you know the truth and that's all that matters, but another part of me wants to get this out in the open to be sure that everyone knows the truth. There was a time when one of the top tags on the internet was KaR against Jaylie Hate. I know a lot of people believe me and that's what matters." Her phone dinged again but she couldn't bring herself to look at it.
When he didn't see her move, Griffin looked at his computer and went to the site. He scrolled through his feed, thanking his daughter for setting it up and teaching him to use it, and found the post that had just come through. The one boy Kylie hadn't mentioned. Then he smiled at the post. "Look at it," he told her gently.
Kylie looked at him and he nodded to her phone. She swallowed, then took a deep breath and unlocked the phone and opened the notification. This time it was a response from Kendall. He had reposted the Skutt-butt and added the message: "Really? You're going to do this? Brotrip. Show his face. Show my face." She smiled softly.
She went back to her feed and pulled up the post she had just made less than five minutes prior. It had no response from the magazine. So she again took matters into her own hands. "Part two. Photo from the front. quote James, brotrip, show his face," she said aloud as she typed. She uploaded a selfie of her and Kendall on the beach then posted the Skutt-butt as a reply to the other one. She locked her phone and put it back in her lap.
Griffin watched his computer, reloading the page until the post from the Double K Band's Skuttlebutter popped up. Kylie didn't have one for her public life, since she hated the site with a passion when it had first debuted but Katie had made one with the band when Kylie had signed on to RCM CBT Globalnet to produce her second album. Katie had also run it for a bit so that people could know what was going on with Kylie's recording life. After a few years Kylie had in fact made her own profile but this one she had kept private so that only her close friends and family knew that it was her. It allowed her a certain amount of freedom when it came to posts that didn't agree with her public profile. When the post popped up, Griffin smirked. "That assuages my concerns even more. Let's hope the news media takes it the same way."
"If you're happy, I'll take it as a win," Kylie said.
"Good. Give me the magazine and get out of my office." Griffin smiled.
"Yes, sir," she answered. She tossed it on his desk and left. A few days later, the world moved on.
Please let me know if there's anything I can explain better.
