Chapter Forty-Nine
Regrets from the Past

"I truly regret ever being with Hallie in the first place." That was the thought that was running through both the husband and wife's minds at the moment, as it was a statement that Matt Casey never imagined himself saying; he learned so much from that relationship, including what it meant to feel loved by a woman. He learned what true love could be, at least what he thought true love was at the time; but there are also times where he wonders what his and Gabby's life could've been had he never been in a relationship with Hallie, and had just been with Gabby from the start. What would that have changed for the both of them? Would they have gotten engaged sooner? Would they already be parents? Would they have ever had to deal with all of the troubles that they've dealt with over the past few months? Or would that have still happened, regardless of the fact that they were together for years? They were all unknows, and he couldn't go back.

He couldn't go back to that Christmas Party, where he had a chance to say yes to being with Gabby rather than Hallie; where they could've shared a kiss, and felt the fireworks that were radiating off of the both of them that night. He felt the sparks that were there in between the both of them, nobody could deny that; they have been in love with each other for years, even though he doesn't truly like to admit that due to the fact that he was engaged to another woman at the time. Well, he doesn't exactly know what he and Hallie were at the time, as they weren't exactly together. But he was still just off of a heartbreak, and it felt wrong to be with someone that quickly. But what if it could've led to what him and Gabby have now so much sooner? That's what he wonders about all the time, and he hates that he even thought that way. Just taking a breath, he knew that they were going to talk about this now; after all, he did open this can of worms. He needs to talk now.

Well, one of them hast to talk at least. Matt didn't know whether Gabby wanted to start the conversation, or if she wanted him to conversation; that was probably the case though, as it was how he was feeling. It was his regrets to talk about, not hers. Just taking a breath, Matt turned his head and looked down at the woman he loves; the woman he is so happy that he gets to call her his wife. And even better, the woman he's proud to be expecting a family with. A family that they're going to raise here in Chicago. Taking a breath, Matt looked at his wife as he stroked her side. "That took some courage to say, didn't it baby?" Feeling the tense air that was still in between them start to soften, Matt let out a sigh of relief as he was glad that he wasn't the one who had to break the awkward moment of silence that they were just sharing just then. "Thanks for breaking that awkward moment of silence." Gabby laughed when she heard Matt tell her that, feeling the same way.

Wrapping her arms around his back as they laid down in bed together, Gabby smiled when she felt Matt tug the covers up on top of the both of them while putting his hand on her neck; leaning over his wife, Matt smirked as he bent down and proceeded to kiss the woman of his dreams softly. "I love you." Gabby nodded as she heard Matt tell her that he loves her, which is something that she always knows; but, that doesn't mean that she doesn't love to hear him tell her that he loves her day in, and day out. It's something that she will always enjoy hearing, as she never knew if she'd ever get the chance to hear this gorgeous man (whom she now gets to call her husband) say that to her each and every day. "Do you want to talk about what you just said?" Matt took a breath when he heard Gabby ask him whether he wants to talk about it. "You mean how I have regrets?" Gabby took a breath, agreeing with the man she loves. "There's only one way to talk about them."

Matt nodded when Gabby mentioned that there's only one way to talk about them, and that's with her; after all, who else is he going to talk about these feelings with? She's the only one who could really understand what he's talking about, as she's the only other person who has knowledge of the entire background of this conversation. Taking a breath, Matt looked down into Gabby's eyes. "Okay, can I just clarify something…" Gabby nodded. "Go ahead." Matt sighed as he went to grab Gabby's hand, intertwining their fingers. "Maybe I don't regret the entire relationship I had with Hallie, as there were some good parts to my relationship; as it helped me grow into the man I am today, the man you love." Gabby smiled when she heard Matt say that, liking that idea. "Yeah, I understand that completely. You having lost her made you who you are today, and that's the man I love." Matt agreed with Gabby when she said that, smiling at the woman he loves so much.

"But looking back. If I could go back to your family's Christmas party, to that staircase…then I would go back and share a kiss with you; I would kiss you, and then we would go home that night. We would've gone back to one of our places, and we would've started fresh." Gabby agreed with her husband when he said that, smiling. "I know all of this baby, because we already talked about it." Matt was a bit confused. "When did we…" Gabby smirked. "When me and you made love to each other for the first time, after you showed up to my door and ripped off that dress I was wearing like the dog you were." Matt just laughed when he heard Gabby say that, unable to hold in his laughter at his wife calling him a dog. "Sorry, I just…" Gabby shook her head when Matt laughed. "Hey, don't apologize. I loved that night, and I loved how we started our relationship. It was so hot, and I loved all the sex that we had over the next couple days as we sneaked around a bit."

Matt smirked when he heard Gabby say that, intertwining their fingers as he stroked her hand with his thumb. "Okay, I hate to say this based on the situation…but I have always wondered how the fuck you didn't get pregnant that night!" Gabby agreed with her husband when he said that, in complete agreement. "Oh god, that's something that we can definitely agree on. To this day, I have no way to explain just how we didn't get pregnant after that night of wild sex. It was incredible, and I loved it more than anything in the entire world; well, maybe less than my hunk of a husband of course." Matt smirked when he heard Gabby say that. "Well, of course. I mean, what's better than the man who actually got you pregnant with the twins?" Gabby smiled when she heard Matt say that, still loving it each and every time that he mentions that they're having twins. "I swear, I still can't believe that we're having twins. It's just something I never imagined would ever happen."

Matt smiled as his wife told him that. "Remember when we joked about it while we were at the doctor's appointment? We spoke about how we'd figure it out." Gabby agreed with her man when he said that, smiling at him. "We will figure it out right?" Matt nodded as Gabby asked him whether they were going to figure it out, because they will figure it out if it's the last thing they do. "Hey, that's not even something that you need to question baby. We're going to figure it out, I promise you that." Gabby agreed with Matt when he told her that, smiling as he is such a hunk of a man. She then decided to get close to him and just cuddled up to him. At the same time, Matt put his hand on her side and kissed her forehead softly. "Want me to tug the covers up some more baby?" Gabby nodded as she kissed Matt's chest softly, very comfortable. Doing just as his wife asked him to do, Matt smiled as he moved his hand to her back as they held each other close this afternoon.

Turning his head, Matt stared into Gabby's eyes before putting his hand on her neck. Afterwards, he stroked her cheek as they stared into each other's eyes. Reaching up, Gabby put her hand on Matt's cheek and stroked it just like Matt was doing to her cheek. And just those actions led to them both leaning in to share a kiss with each other. Bending down to kiss his beautiful wife, Matt smiled as he took things slow with her while moving his hand down her back. At the same time, Gabby slipped her legs in between Matt's and went ahead and cuddled up to the man of her dreams; and the father of her children. "Well, I still can't believe that we made it here." Gabby was confused when she heard Matt say that. "What are you talking about baby? I should be the one saying that considering I was the one who left you." Matt laughed. "Yet, I was the one who first resisted something that I shouldn't have resisted. Maybe I would've been a father by now."

Gabby took a breath. "Hey, that's nothing on you baby. We've been trying for a long time, I just meant that I would've left Hallie whom I knew was never going to give me kids; and I would be with a woman who wants, and will give me kids." Gabby agreed with her husband when he said that, well aware that's what he meant. She then got close to him and proceeded to wrap her arms around his torso. Wrapping his arm around her waist, Matt smiled as he pressed his lips to Gabby's forehead before looking down at her. "Plus, the name Gabriela Casey sounds better than Hallie Casey." Gabby agreed with Matt, smiling at him. "Also, we would've been together through a bunch of the troubles that I dealt with the next year. Most notably, my mom. I mean, not that it would've definitely put a strain on our relationship from the start." Gabby agreed with Matt when he said that, smiling as he stroked her bottom through the lingerie that she was wearing.

She then decided to tease him back, slipping her legs in between his some more so that her body was pushing against his manhood. Moaning as he felt Gabby did that, Matt looked down at his wife. "I swear Gabriela Casey, you are really turning me on right now; and you have to know that!" Gabby smirked when Matt told her that, well aware of the fact that she was turning him on right now. "Baby, why do you think I'm doing it? I'm doing it because I want to tease you, then you are going to be satisfied and not want sex." Matt shook his head when he heard Gabby tell him that, as it's not what he wants to hear coming from her. He's satisfied with them just being together. Him having sex from her isn't want satisfies him, what satisfies him is spending time with the woman he loves. "Please, never think that I need sex to be satisfied baby. I just need time with the woman I love, and our kids in the future, to be satisfied. Just doing this together makes me happy."

Gabby looked up into Matt's eyes when he said that. "Talking as we lay down in bed with each other?" Matt nodded, smiling as he put his hand on his wife's hip.. "Exactly. Just us being together is all that matters at the end of the day, because you're the woman I love more than anything in the entire world; and you're also the woman I plan on spending the rest of my life married to." Gabby smirked when she heard Matt say that, putting her hand on his arm as they cuddled up to each other. She then looked down a bit, blushing because of how happy she is right now; the man laying down in bed with her right now makes her so happy, that she's just so damn addicted to him. Moving his hand to his wife's neck, Matt smiled as he leaned in and proceeded to kiss her softly; he then took things slow with her, ready to share a long kiss with her. However, it didn't seem that Gabby felt the same way; in fact, she pushed him over onto his back not too long into the kiss.

"Hey!" Gabby then went ahead and tried to make things better, by laying down on his chest for him. Smiling as Gabby did that, Matt put his hand on her back and ran his fingers up and down the delicate lingerie that she was wearing for him; the lingerie being made out of lace and soft cotton. That way, it is both extremely sexy; yet, it's also very comfortable for Gabby to wear. But that didn't mean that she was warm while she was wearing the garment, so that that cuddles and blankets needed to be involved. With Matt's body heat helping onto so little, Gabby was soon thinking about the fact that she was both comfortable…and a bit cold at the same time. And as much as she wanted to keep the covers at the waist as a way to please her loving husband, she knew that was not practical due to the fact that she was starting to get a bit cold at the moment. So, she decided to do something Matt was going to hate; she was going to ask him to cover her up.

"Matt?" Moving his hand up and down her back, Matt smiled as he turned his head and kissed her forehead softly. "Yeah baby?" Gabby sighed. "I hate to do this to you, but I'm a bit cold. Do you mind…." Matt then did exactly what she wanted him to do. He grabbed the duvet and brought it up on top of the both of them some more, ending with him wrapping his legs tightly around hers. "Listen to me Gabriela, you never need to worry about me not being okay with you needing to be covered by a blanket; if you're cold, then you have every right to ask me to tug the blankets up on top of the both of us. And I also promise that I will do it." Gabby agreed with Matt when he told her that, smiling as she felt him wrap his arm around her back underneath the covers; the feeling of his strong arm around her back being something that she always enjoys, as it just makes her feel so safe. "Did I ever tell you how I feel when you have you arm around my back like this baby?"

Pressing his lips to Gabby's forehead once again, Matt shook his head. "No, do you want to tell me now?" Gabby smiled as she laid her head down on his chest just like she did in the bath, listening to his heartbeat underneath him. "It makes me feel safe." Matt agreed with Gabby when she told him that it makes her feel safe, proceeding to run his hand up and down her back at the same time. "I'm glad that it makes you feel safe, because you should always feel safe when we're in each other's arms baby. And I mean that more than anything in the entire world. If at any time you don't feel safe in my arms, then you need to tell me; that way, I can fix how I am acting to make sure that you once again feel safe in my arms. That's how I always want you to feel when we're together. I'm your protector, and the man that you should always be able to turn to when it comes to you needing to be defended; including when you're dealing with your paramedic partners."

The topic of how Gabby dealt with the whole Sylvie situation on her last shift before leaving for Puerto Rico was still a sore topic in the Casey household, so it was rarely mentioned; especially not when the couple are in bed with each other, in a place where Matt doesn't like to bring up other women. But things just started flowing out of his head, and it came out; and he has been regretting it ever since, as it meant that they were going to have to talk about it now. Now that he said it, it was going to stay in Gabby's head until they talked about it; and he hated that, because it was all his fault. If he just stopped when he was ahead. Taking a breath, Matt then decided to tell Gabby that they didn't need to talk about it if she didn't want to. "We don't have to talk about it if you don't want to." Gabby looked up at Matt when he told her that. "And if I do want to talk about it?" Matt was a bit taken aback when he heard Gabby tell him, that she actually wants to talk about it.

"Wow, you actually want to talk about it?" Gabby agreed with Matt when he asked her whether she wanted to talk about it. "I think it's something that we do need to talk about, because we need to really work on our communication skills. We need to figure out why we didn't talk that day." Gabby sighed. "We had that fight about the whole pregnant situation, so that didn't help." Matt agreed with his wife. "And then, add in what Sylvie did…and we just weren't in a place where we could talk; because we weren't in a place where we could truly say that we were acting as husband and wife, because we weren't acting as husband and wife at the time. Rather, we were working independent of one another; and I definitely hate that." Gabby agreed with her husband when he told her that, cuddling up to him some more as they cuddled up to each other.

And let's just say that it's exactly what the could wanted to do at the moment, she wanted to cuddle up to her loving husband as they held each other close right now. And let's just say that it's perfect, the way they're holding each other close right now; it's exactly what the both of them wanted. "I just hate how it all ended, and I hate how we handled up. And I'm sorry if I'm sounding like a broken record." Gabby agreed with Matt when he said that, turning his head to kiss her forehead softly. And let's just say that Gabby was really happy over the fact that they are both really happy as they cuddled up to each other right now. This is perfect. "How are you feeling right now?" Gabby smiled. "I'm feeling better, because I know…while these aren't the happiest of memories, I know that we're past them; and that's all that matters now."

Gabby agreed with her man when he said that, smiling as they are both really happy with each other. Little did she know, that Matt would then end up running his hand down her body. Moving his hand to her leg, Matt just made her feel really special. So special, that Gabby was just glad that they're together right now. She feels so happy, and like she's the luckiest woman in the entire world. Running his hand up Gabby's back afterwards, Matt smirked as he put his hand on the top of her back. Stroking her shoulder, Matt smiled as he turned his head and kissed her forehead softly. And let's just say that him leaving soft kisses on her forehead always makes her smile. "You know, we should probably start doing something rather than just stay in bed all day." Matt looked down at Gabby when she said that. "Oh yeah, and what's that?" Gabby smiled as she looked up at the man of her dreams. "We could always go surprise my mom. It's Thanksgiving after all."

Matt then realized that, looking down at his wife. "I forgot. Happy thanksgiving baby." Gabby smiled as she slipped up his chest, taking a breath as she looked down at the man she loves. "Listen, as much as I want to be alone with you…on our last Thanksgiving before we have a baby, I think we both know that isn't the right thing. Baby, my brother is there with his kids. What do you say we go there? Or would you rather go see your sister?" Matt sighed. "She moved to Milwaukee to live with her boyfriend, I didn't even know; and I have no clue where my mom is. Last time I checked, she was in California in jail." Gabby was shocked when she heard Matt say that. "What?" Matt nodded. "Yeah, she got caught doing drugs and…" Gabby agreed. "It'll be a nice surprise for your mom. We can be as a family, see Eva and Diego again. I haven't seen them in a while." Gabby agreed with Matt when he said that, smirking as she bent down and kissed her man softly.

"I'm going to pack some sweats and wear something sexy on top of this, you can get a thank you later." Gabby then went ahead and proceeded to walk away to her closet so that she can get dressed. At the same time, Matt laughed due to the fact that she is just so adorable. Sitting up, he went ahead and looked at the woman of his dreams.

Matt's Thoughts:
The way Gabby just skipped away to go get dressed was adorable, she just looked so happy after we agreed to go to her mom's place for Thanksgiving. And that really sounds perfect, really happy over the fact that she's going to get to see her mom, her brother, and our niece and nephew. The truth was, I haven't seen them for a while; and I think it'll be great to see them once again. Now, time to get dressed so that we can make our way to her mom's place and celebrate Thanksgiving.

Gabby's POV:
After spending the past 30 minutes getting ready to go to my mom's place for thanksgiving, I took a breath because I was really happy over the fact that Matt agreed (on a dime) that we could go to my mom's place and celebrate thanksgiving with my family. It's Thanksgiving Day, and we took some time off. I just wonder if he's going to tell me whether he's going to tell them about him quitting the CFD. But that soon left my mind when I saw my handsome husband walk into our bathroom wearing the outfit that he's going to wear, while also looking at the tight dress that I plan on wearing. "Wow." I laughed a bit when I heard Matt say that, ready to feel him walk up behind me. "I packed you a pair of your comfy pants that look professional, along with a nice sweater that you can wear if you get uncomfortable in this." I smiled when I heard Matt say that. "I love that idea baby." Matt agreed with me, smirking as he walked up behind me so he could do up my dress.

Grabbing the zipper to my dress, he smirked and just went ahead to do it up for me. And let's just say that it was perfect, and it was exactly what I wanted him to do. Doing up my dress for me, Matt smirked as he tugged it up before proceeding to turn me around in his arms; stepping close to me, Matt smiled as he put his hands next to me. Moving my hands to his chest, I smiled as I looked at my man. "Damn, you look great baby." Matt agreed with me when I said that, smiling as she put her hands on my sides. He then leaned in and proceeded to kiss me softly. Taking things nice and slow with the man of my dreams, I smiled because I really love him. He's an amazing man, and I am so proud of the fact that he's my husband. I then got close to him and proceeded to wrap my arms around his neck. Moving his hands to my back, Matt smiled as he leaned in and kissed my softly. "I love you." I agreed with Matt, smiling at my husband. "I love you too Matt."

I just smiled at Matt when he said that. "Thank you so much for agreeing to go to my parent's place. I know that we agreed to be here, and that we would relax; but I haven't seen Eva and Diego in a while so…" Matt just smiled as he put his hands next to me on the counter. "Hey, take a breath and relax baby. I understand, and I am so glad that we're going too. This is what matters on Thanksgiving, for us to spend time together with our family. Plus, I haven't seen your mom in a while; heck, since before we got married. I'm glad that she's back in town too." I agreed with Matt, smiling as I wrapped my arms around his neck. Moving his hands to my back, Matt smiled as he leaned in and kissed me softly, which I really enjoyed.

Matt's POV:
Taking things nice and slow with the woman of my dreams, I smiled due to the fact that I am madly in love with my loving wife; I just love here more each and every day, and there's nothing better than us taking things nice and slow with each other. I love Gabby more than anything in the entire world, and I am so proud of the fact that she's my wife. She's a bright woman, and I am so proud that I get to call her mine. "I love you, and I am really happy that we're married. And I am even prouder of the fact that we're doing this together, starting a family; this has been a journey that I have been waiting to start for the longest time. And thanks to you, my extremely sexy and beautiful wife; it finally has." Gabby agreed with me when I told her that, stroking my hand as we both held each other close here in the washroom. To say that it was exactly what I wanted to do truly was an understatement. The reason? This seems so surreal, that I feel like this I a dream come true.

And the reality is, that's exactly what it is. "Let's get out of here okay? I want to go see my niece and nephew." Gabby laughed when I said that, proceeding to lead me out of the washroom to go to her mom's place for Thanksgiving.
