Chapter One Hundred and Seventeen
New Year's Day: Surprise Baby Shower
"What the heck is this?" That was the reaction that the wife had when she first walked into the living room of their home, unsure as to just what she's looking at. The sight? The entire firehouse, along with some of their significant others joining them; more specifically, Cruz's girlfriend Chloe, Cindy Herrmann, and Donna Boden. I mean, didn't they all have shift yesterday? They were all so confused right now as they walked into the living room. Walking in behind Gabby, Boden smiled as he put his hand on her shoulder and looked at her. "Do you really think that we're going to miss a chance to celebrate you?" Turning to look at Gabby, Boden was confused when she heard him say that. "Can you please explain just want you mean Chief?" Chief Boden smiled when Gabby asked him that, before letting Stella explain just what's happening. "Well, I hope that this can be your way of forgiving me." Turning her head, Gabby was just confused; after all, she didn't comprehend what was happening at the moment. Why were all of their friends here? What was happening right now? Those were the questions that Gabby had in her mind at the moment, and she just needed some answers right now.
Taking a breath, Gabby looked at her best friend with the hopes of getting some answers. "Okay, what the heck is happening? Can someone please explain just what's happening?" That's when Gabby's mom Camila walked over to her, clearly able to see that her daughter was quite confused at the moment; and she knew that could definitely lead to her getting so worried, that it might (negatively) affect the babies. "Sweetie, your friends are here for your baby shower." Gabby then realized that. "Oh god, you mean?" Everybody just smiled at her, proceeding to yell out. "SURPRISE!" Gabby just laughed when she heard that, before seeing her niece and nephew make their way over to her; and she thought that they were gone. "Wait a second, Eva and Diego?" Antonio then smirked as he looked at his sister, glad that they were able to keep the surprise. That's when Matt walked up behind Gabby and just looked at him. "What are you doing here?" Antonio laughed. "Did you really think that me and Christie didn't know that we were your siblings-in-law?"
Matt was still trying to understand what Antonio was saying. "Matt, we were acting. We saw you calling, and we needed a cover story!" Matt then looked at Antonio. "Oh, so you guys didn't sleep together?" Looking at Matt, Antonio smirked. "I'm a good actor, aren't I?" Matt just shook his head when he heard Antonio say that, before getting close to him so that he can hug him. "I swear, you are so weird in how you try and hide the fact that you're doing this." However, the rest of their friends (more specifically, Cruz) was confused as to just what Matt was talking about. "Okay, what are you guys talking about?" Matt then smiled as he walked over to some of their friends. "I thought he slept with my sister last night." Everybody then turned to look at Antonio when Matt said that, however Antonio shut it down. "Okay, I didn't sleep with her! I was helping with planning this surprise baby shower. We have to make final plans last night!" Christie agreed with Antonio when he said that, smiling at her brother. "Matt, I know who your brother-in-law is because I have met him."
Matt just agreed with his sister when she said that, proceeding to go hug her again. "Sorry about that." Christie agreed with her brother when he said that, smiling as she hugged him. "Don't you dare accuse me of that again." Matt agreed with Christie when she said that, smiling as she held her brother close. Afterwards, Matt when to continue making his way down the line to hug the rest of their friends. Taking a cheque out of her pocket, Cindy smiled when Matt got to her. "This is for you and Gabby." Matt then went to grab the cheque, smiling at her as he went to turn his head and looked at Gabby. Gabby then continued to make her way down the line, that way she can grab the cheque. The cheque that she was going to be giving back to her partners. Grabbing it from her husband, Gabby smiled as she looked at him. "How about you keep going to say hi to our friends?" Matt agreed with his wife when she said that, smiling as he went to kiss the side of her head. Afterwards, he walked away to keep saying hi to their friends at the same time.
Meanwhile, Gabby looked at Cindy and smiled at her. "Cindy, I can't accept this cheque anymore." Herrmann turned to look at his partner, confused. "Gabby, this is your part of the bar." Gabby agreed with Herrmann when he said that, smiling at him. "Oh, I am well aware that it's my part of the bar. However, I am giving it back to the bar so that you guys can reinvest my share into the bar. Last time I checked, I do not need the money anymore. Do this to upgrade some of the bar." Herrmann smiled when he heard Gabby say that, loving that idea. "Can we do that with the rest of your cheques?" Gabby smiled. "Maybe every other cheque. Just give me some spending money that my husband doesn't need to control!" Matt turned to look at Gabby when she said that, laughing. "Last time I checked, I did give you my debit card with an unlimited budget to buy whatever you want for the boys." Gabby agreed with Matt when he said that, smiling at her husband.
"Oh yes, you definitely did." Gabby then turned to look at Cindy, smiling at her. "Just to let you know, if you ever need to go back to your hotel and check on the kids; go right ahead." Cindy laughed. "Oh, we didn't bring the kids. I left them with my mom. Sorry, but I was not bringing five kids to Hawaii via Los Angeles." Gabby agreed with her, smiling. "That reminds me. Matt?" Matt then turned to look at his wife, smiling at her. "What is it Gabby?" Gabby smiled at him. "Let's pay their air fare on the way back." Boden laughed. "Not happening Gabby." Gabby then stared at Boden, not wanting him to argue with her. "Oh god, I still remember that stare from when I was dating her." Turning around, Gabby was confused when she heard Jay Halstead come in with Alex. "Jay? Alex?" Alex smiled when she heard Gabby speak to her. "How are you Gabby?" Gabby then walked over to her friend, smiling as she proceeded to hug her. "God, I feel like I'm dreaming. Alex Lindsay? In my home?"
Jay then proceeded to get close to Alex, smiling as he wrapped his arm around her. "Actually, Alex Halstead as of yesterday morning." Gabby was shocked when she heard Jay tell them that, really shocked that they got married. "What?" Alex sighed. "It's complicated, and we would rather not talk about it." Gabby just thought about it, and agreed with her friend (whom she hasn't seen in a long time) as she didn't want to create more problems for her. She then went to hug her, smiling. "We'll have to talk some time, the four of us after you sending us that e-mail." Jay agreed with Gabby when she said that, well aware of just what e-mail she was talking about. That's when Matt walked up to Jay and Alex, smiling at his wife. "I was just going to say the same thing." Gabby agreed with Matt when he said that, smiling at him as she went ahead and continued down their line of friends to get some more hugs. Meanwhile, Matt looked at Jay and Alex.
"So, I heard something about Alex Halstead?" Alex laughed. "Yeah, me and Jay got married in Vegas yesterday." Jay smirked as he heard Alex say that, glad that was the case. "Was Hank there?" Alex shook her head. "Then I definitely approve the fact that you did it without your dad being there, because that takes a bunch of guts. I swear, I still hate that man." Jay agreed with Matt when he said that, smiling as he proceeded to shake Matt's hand. "Listen, I am not sure what we're doing yet when it comes to police, so we'll have to figure that out. Heck, I might even offer my brother-in-law a position if he wants to stay here." Antonio agreed with Matt when he said that, having proceeded to make his way over to Jay and Alex. "Mind if I sit with you guys?" Jay agreed with Antonio when he asked him that, smiling as he went to hug him. "How are you man?" Antonio smiled as he hugged him. "Congrats to the both of you guys, I know that you guys are going to be happy."
Alex agreed with Antonio when he said that, smiling at their friend. "Hopefully, here in Hawaii." Antonio smiled when they told him that. "I am debating whether I want to stay here or not, been fielding options from Honolulu PD and the FBI." Turning his head when he heard that, Matt shook his head. "Not happening. If I'm helping to pay for you to live here in Hawaii, then you're going to be working for the company!" Antonio agreed with Matt when he said that, smiling at him. "Of course Matt." Matt just laughed, smiling as they continued to walk around to say hi to all of their friends who made the (long) journey all the way to Hawaii. "Listen, let's get the hellos here; and then we can all sit down and start with the gifts." Turning her head, Gabby looked at her husband. "Matthew!" Matt just agreed with Gabby when she said that, smiling as they continued to say hello to all of their friends who made the trek here to Hawaii for their baby shower.
Once Matt and Gabby finished saying hi to all of their friends, they both smiled while they sat down together on one of their comfortable couches. More specifically, they sat on the couch that was in the center of all of their friends who were now gathered all around them. Just smiling at them all, Matt decided to speak first. "So listen, before we start…I want to just say this. I want to thank you all for coming. For you guys to make your way all the way here to Hawaii is a lot, and I know that it's not always that easy to do." Boden laughed when he heard Matt say that. "Oh trust me, that was really hard. Try getting an entire shift's worth of firefighters to cover us while we're gone, along with a Battalion Chief." Matt agreed with Boden when he said that. "Oh, I remember; I'm actually working on that at the moment. Oh, those study materials are really coming in handy with what we're doing right now." Gabby smiled as she turned to look at Matt. "Want to tell them?"
Cruz looked at their friends when they said that, unsure as to just what they were talking about. "Tell us what?"
Matt's POV:
When Cruz asked me what we need to tell him, I smiled as I was ready to tell them about the project that we're starting now. The project that me and Gabby are both very proud about. Turning to look at Kelly, I smiled at him. "Have you already told them what you're doing?" Kelly, looking at his best friend realized what he was talking about. "What's he talking about Severide? You said that you were going to have to talk to me at some point while I was down here." Severide took a breath when Boden asked him that. "Me and Stella have decided that we're done with Chicago just like Matt and Gabby." Cruz seemed shocked when he heard Kelly say that, this (obviously) being the first time that Kelly was even bringing this up to the rest of our friends. Sighing, I just looked at Severide. "I'm sorry Kelly." Kelly agreed with me when I said that, well aware of what I was trying to tell him. "It's ok Matt, I need to tell them anyways." I agreed with him when he said that, smiling.
Kelly then took a breath. "So uhm, I know I told you guys that I was going to be coming back to Chicago and the Firehouse after this." Boden agreed with Kelly when he said that. "I guess that's changing?" Kelly took a breath. "I am actually going to be staying here with Matt, to help him with a project that he's going to be working on; a project that I am already well aware of, but I am not going to be telling him unless he wants to tell you guys." I agreed with Kelly when he said that, glad that he was letting me be the one that tells them just what we're doing. Wrapping my arm around Gabby's back, I smiled as I put my hand on her stomach and then felt her put her hand on mine; stroking my hand with her thumb, Gabby smiled as she laid her head down on my shoulder. Afterwards, I decided to tell them. "Okay, so I have a lot of news to tell you guys. First of all, you all know that we're wealthy now." Herrmann laughed. "You want to give us a million for our kids?"
Cindy just laughed when she heard her husband say that, probably really liking that idea. "Oh, I would love that idea!" I agreed with Herrmann when he said that, smiling at him. "Well, we need our money for something. We're actually going to be doing something; in fact, we're already starting it." Everybody agreed with me when I said that, smiling. "And that project would be a new company that we're going to be starting, company that is going to manufacture firefighter tools; and we're thinking about expanding into policing someday in the future. So basically, a company that will supply to fire departments." I then looked at Cruz and Otis. "That reminds me, I would definitely like to speak to you Cruz. I want to talk to you about the Slamigan. I want to see if I can help you out with that." Otis laughed. "Let me guess, you want to help us manufacture?" I shrugged when he asked me that. "Well, I was actually thinking about other things; but we'll talk about it."
Cruz and Otis both agreed with me when I said that, smiling as they knew that I was definitely going to be talking about them in the future; and that's definitely something that I'm glad that we're going to be talking about early, because it means that we can start making money for our company much sooner than planned if we just started from nothing. I then looked at Boden, smiling at him. "And if the CFD ever wants something, I hope you think of me. Maybe you can give me hints ahead of time if they are looking for something, and I can create some good ones." Boden agreed with me when I said that, smirking as that was definitely something that he could do for me. "Well, I like that idea. But listen, I think we all know that we're not here to just talk to you guys right now. We're here to give you guys some things for your baby." Gabby laughed as Boden said that, agreeing with him. "Okay, family goes first. I want family gifts first."
Christie smiled when Gabby said that, well aware that meant that we were going to get a bunch of gifts. I then smiled at my mom. "I would like the one from our moms to tell you the truth." My mom agreed with me, smiling as she went to get up so that we can get started with the gifts this afternoon.
Gabby's POV:
As my mom carried her gift to me, I smiled as I have been waiting for this day for such a long time; I have wanted to have a baby shower for one of our kids, and that just made me emotional. Turning to look at me, Matt put his hand on my back and seemed to get concerned. "Hey, why are you crying baby?" I then took a breath, proceeding to wipe my eyes. "Sorry, it's just….I have been waiting to have this type of get together for so long. A baby shower for our children." Matt agreed with me as I said that, smiling as he rubbed my back and then kissed the side of my head. That's when Herrmann spoke up. "Didn't I tell you guys the truth Gabby? I told you that someday you would be a great mom, and that you'd be a mom someday." I agreed with Herrmann when he told me that, still remembAlexg that video that he sent to us all those years ago. "Thank you so much for sending us that video all those years ago, and I hate that you and Cindy went through that."
Turning to look at her husband, Cindy grabbed his hand.. "You told her about my…" Herrmann sighed, agreeing with her. "I hope that was okay, I was just trying to do whatever I could to make her feel better." Cindy agreed with her husband.
"It's fine Christopher. I'm just glad that we were able to be a help in your time of need Gabby." I agreed with Cindy when she told me that, just smiling as me and Matt are very happy now. I then felt Matt put his hand on my stomach, smiling as we both just took it easy with our friends at the same time. God, this is perfect; and there is nothing better than us having a baby shower for the twins. Afterwards, my mom smiled as she went to give me the gift. "Oh gosh, I just realized something. Have you guys told your friends the gender of your children?" Matt smiled when she asked us that. "Yes, our friends are aware of the fact that we're having twin boys." The guys were all happy about that. "Yeah, Casey!" I then looked at Hawkins, who was there as a paramedic. "Hawkins." Hawkins the shut up, agreeing with me as he knew that he had to be on my side as a paramedic. "God, she still has it." Turning to look at Mouch, I smiled when he said that. "How's Trudy?"
Mouch smiled when I asked him that. "She sends her love and told me to hurry home." Matt laughed as he heard Mouch say that, well aware that he wasn't going to be able to stay long. "Did you guys take the next shift off?" Boden smiled. "Yes, we did take next shift off; because we're going to need to recover from the long flights and jet lag." I agreed with Boden when he said that. "God, tell me about it. Try having to deal with jet lag while you're pregnant!" Cindy agreed with me when I said that. "I can only imagine." I smiled when Cindy said that. "By the way, I hate to say this…but have you guys congratulated the other newlyweds yet? More specifically, Kelly and Stella?" Cruz looked at Kelly when he said that. "You guys are married now?" Kelly agreed with his former Squad subordinate. "Yes, we are married as of last night." Everybody agreed with Kelly when he said that, smiling at him. "Congratulations Kelly and Stella." Kelly agreed with them, smiling.
At the same time, Stella did the same. "Thanks everybody." She then wrapped her arms around Kelly's bicep as she grabbed his hand, intertwining their fingers at the same time. She then smiled as she laid her head down on his shoulder, cuddling up to her husband. At the same time, Kelly decided to wrap his arm around her to make her feel better. He knows that she's still hurting because of the miscarriage, but he decided not to mention it. "You okay?" Stella agreed with her husband, deciding not to go into details.
Note to Readers:
I know that I just started to cover this baby shower, however I seem to have been loosing some ideas for the baby shower (and New Year's Day in General). So, I am going to be ending this day over the next few chapters; but that doesn't mean the firehouse will be here. Rather, they will be here for a week. I hope you understand, and continue to enjoy the story.
