The Caseys: Parenthood Begins - Short Story
Chapter Three
Did you Take your Medicine this Morning?

The husband (unfortunately) didn't know whether he yet took his medicine this morning; but regardless, he still decided to call for breakfast. Whether or not he'd yet taken his medicine (which he has to take with food), he still needs to make sure that his wife (and the new mother of his children) ate so that she can start creating breastmilk. Walking into the bathroom that they have attached to their hospital room, Matt was about to go check if he took his meds; but first, he remembered that he had something to tell his wife first. Something that was important, as it was going to help her this morning. Turning his head, Matt smiled as he looked at his girl. "How about while I take my meds…you look into your side table?" Gabby was confused as her husband when he asked her that, unsure as to what exactly he was talking about. "What are you talking about?" Matt smirked at his girl. "Just do it baby." Agreeing with her husband, Gabby did as she was told to do.

Meanwhile, Matt went to check his medicine container before seeing that he hadn't taken his medicine. Taking a breath, he sighed and then went to go open the container; after which, he put the medicine in his hand so that he could take it. "Let me guess, you didn't take your medicine?" That's when Gabby noticed just what her husband was talking about. And that was that he decided to put some of her favorite snacks in the top drawer of her hospital side table, something which he did this morning; and that she was grateful for due to the fact that she didn't know what type of snacks she was going to be able to enjoy here at the hospital. "God, I love you so much." Matt laughed as he grabbed some water from the sink, before taking a sip. And he was glad that he took it, as it helped his medicine go down his throat. But now that it was done, it meant that he was calming down. "Let me guess, the meds are calming you down?" Matt nodded as he turned his head.

Thankfully, the washroom was directly parallel to the bed that his wife was currently lying down in, which meant that he could see her perfectly from where he was currently standing this morning; and let's just say that even after giving birth to their sons, she still looked like the most beautiful woman in the entire world to him. And that's a fact that he's never going to let his wife argue with him about, as it's the god's honest truth of the situation. But there was one thing that was not looking the best, and that was his face; and that was due to the fact that he had a nice five o'clock shadow. Just taking a breath, Matt thought about shaving when he realized that he could wait until he's in the shower; that being due to the fact that he doesn't want to clog up the sink that was quite small. With the plumbing (probably) not being the best at the hospital, he didn't want to do that; after all, they do need to use the sink for everything else. "You want to shave?"

Turning his head, Matt looked at his wife. "I think the real question, is do YOU want me to shave?" Gabby shook her head. "I want you to come back to bed so that I can hold you in my arms, before the nurse comes in to check on the boys." And it was as if Gabby could just predict that it was the truth, because the nurse soon walked in. "Oh, good morning Ms. Casey. I didn't expect you to be awake this early this morning." Gabby agreed with the nurse. "Oh, just getting used to how early I have to wake up when we're home with Jacob and Matteo." That's when Matt came out of the washroom and agreeing with his girl. "Maybe while the nurse is here, I can take that shower we both know that you want me to take?" Gabby shook her head. "No, because you don't need to take a shower right now. I'm awake, you can take one when I'm asleep." Matt agreed with his wife when she said that, before making his way back out of the washroom to once again join her in bed.

Turning to look at the new father, the nurse smile at him. "For what it's worth, I think you look good with a five o'clock shadow Mr. Casey. Sorry, I overheard." Matt laughed as he heard the nurse tell him that. "Thank you nurse…" Seeing that the father forgot her name, the nurse decided to remind him just what her name was. "Alicia Mallory." Matt agreed with her, before walking up to her so that he could shake her hand. "I am so sorry; I'll try and remember it next time." Alicia shook her head, smiling at the new father. "Trust me, you're not the first father, nor will you be the last father to forget my name; after all, you guys have to remember a lot of names." Matt laughed when he heard the nurse tell him that, because that was the truth. "Believe me, that's definitely the truth. Try over a hundred and fifty names." Alicia looked at the new father when he said that, unsure as to just what he meant; that was, until the new mother told her what he meant.

"My husband is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Casey." Alicia then realized just how she recognized the man. "Oh my god, now I recognize the name. My sister works for you." Matt was confused when he heard his son's nurse say that. "What?"

Matt's POV:
When I heard that my sons' nurse's sister works at Casey, I was confused. "Sorry, your sister works for me?" Alicia laughed as she walked over to the boys' cribs. "My sister is Isabelle Mallory." I then realized that. "Oh my god, I see it now. I knew you looked like someone I knew." Gabby then turned to look at her husband, confused as to just who Isabelle is. "Sorry baby, but who is Isabelle?" I smiled at Gabby when she asked me who Isabelle is. "Isabelle is our new Assistant Head of Marketing for Native Languages. She's going to take care of Marketing here in Hawaii in their native, Hawaiian languages." Alicia agreed with me when I said that. "I can say this. Isabelle is honored to work for you, as she has been looking for a job for over two years. But for her to get a job that involves her being able to use her native tongues, it's just her dream come true." I agreed with Alicia when she said that, smiling at my son and wife's nurse; after which, I walked over to Gabby.

Turning to look at me as I walked over to her, Gabby was still a bit confused. "Assistant Head of Marketing for Native Languages?" I agreed with Gabby when she said that. "Yeah, I want to do marketing here in Hawaii in Native Languages. Might make me look less like an interloper who's just using Hawaii for great staff, and more like someone who's not just ready to hire people locally; but that he's also willing to make things for the people whom he now lives among." Both of the ladies in the room agreed with me when I said that, obviously glad that was the case. "I swear, my husband is such a brilliant man." I agreed with Gabby when she said that, before hearing Alicia say something similar. "That he is. Sorry, that sounds weird; I'm not trying to flirt with your husband Ms. Casey, I truly mean that." Gabby laughed as she heard Alicia say that. "Baby, how about you go take a shower and just leave me and Alicia alone for a bit? She's nervous around you."

I agreed with Gabby as she told me that, before proceeding to make my way over to my bag that I brought along with me. Opening it, I went to go find a new set of clothes that I can wear; before also grabbing a fresh pair of boxers. Turning to look at my girl, I decided to grab one of the shirts that I also brought along for her to wear while we rest at the hospital; after which, I threw it towards her so that she can put it on. After all, I knew that was what she wanted to do. Laughing as I did that, Gabby smiled due to the fact that it was perfect. "Thanks baby." I agreed with Gabby when she told me that, flashing her one last smile before walking away so that I could take a shower for her this morning. "Oh, tell your sister hi for me; and tell her that I appreciate all she does for the company." Alicia laughed when I said that, agreeing with me. "Of course, Mr. Casey." Matt agreed with the nurse, before walking away so that he can go take the shower he needs.

At the same time, Gabby turned to look at her nurse. "Sorry about him, he's a talker when he's nervous." Alicia agreed with Gabby as she said that, well aware of the fact that we're, which is something to be expected. "First time parents?" Gabby agreed with Alicia when she asked her whether they're first-time parents, to which I decided to respond. "Well, to newborns; we used to foster a child, and we wanted to adopt him. But then his father came back into he picture, and we lost him. But now, we have our sons." Alicia agreed with me as I said that, before turning to look at the boys; after which she saw that Matteo was awake. "Hey buddy, you look comfortable there in your little bed. Sorry that you can't be held by your beautiful mommy right now, I'm sure she misses that." Gabby agreed with Alicia. "Yeah. Is there any way that we can move them close so that I can at least touch them?" Looking at my wife, I sighed as I knew that was what she wanted.

Turning her head, Alicia was about to say something; that was, until her doctor came in. "I think that we can definitely do that for you tomorrow. There's another reason why we're keeping them a bit further right now though." Confused, Gabby looked at her doctor Miranda Bailey. "Sorry, who are you?" Dr. Bailey smiled at the new mother. "Hi, I'm Dr. Miranda Bailey, the Postpartum Specialist assigned to you." Gabby smiled. "So, do I not have another doctor?"" Dr. Bailey agreed. "Dr. Andrea Jackson is your NICU Specialist, and she will be dealing with the boys." Dr. Bailey then turned to look at Alicia. "Alicia, I just ran into her; she was going to come in to check on the boys, but I said that I could. Can you get me their BP and their stats right now? Also please send the HR chart from 9 pm to 9 am for each child to the filing system, we will monitor those prior to us agreeing that it'd be a good idea to send them home." Alicia agreed with the doctor when she said that.

"Of course, Dr. Bailey." Walking over to the computer that was monitoring their sons, Alicia proceeded to get all of the charts that the doctor requested that she get about Jacob and Matteo; after which, she sent them to the system. Taking a breath, I was shocked by just how much that computer can do for our sons. "Wow, that's a lot of information that computer can get." Dr. Bailey agreed. "Don't worry Mr. Casey, I promise that it'll stay safe here in the hospital. We use internal servers." I agreed with Gabby's doctor as she said that, before turning to look at her. "Uhm, is that why our boys can't be close to us right now?" Dr. Bailey then turned to look at Alicia. "Alicia, did you tell them that they can't be close? I thought we gave you that recent briefing about the new ports that were right next to the beds? You just need…." That's when the doctor realized something, the nurse is just a student nurse. "Oh, I just realized something." Alicia took a breath.

"My apologies Mr. and Ms. Casey, but I am just a student nurse; they put us on at night." Hearing that, I was furious; especially after the amount of money that I paid to get this specific room, a VIP suite. "Excuse me?" Gabby turned to look at me as I said that. "Baby, what's wrong?" I just took a breath. "I specifically requested that I wanted a seasoned nurse after what happened the last time around, and I think we both know that's not too much to ask based on what we went through." Gabby agreed with me as I said that, while I turned to look at Alicia. "Please go get me your supervisor. After which, can you get me and my wife a pancake breakfast?" Alicia agreed with the father when he said that, seemingly well aware of the fact that he's mad; at the same time, Dr. Bailey agreed. "I'm so sorry that your wishes weren't honored Mr. Casey." I agreed with Dr. Bailey as she said that. "Gabby, I am going to take my shower now to calm down." Gabby agreed.

After which, I turned around so that I could go take a shower this morning; that way, I could really calm down.

She decided to wait, wait until her husband was in the shower before she spoke to her doctor about what just happened; and about what happened to them in the past, so that she could understand just why they wanted a real nurse to take care of her. Taking a breath, Gabby looked at her doctor. "Do you mind if I ask just what that was about? It might help with how I take care of you." Gabby sighed. "A few years ago, I suffered from an ectopic pregnancy. I almost died at that time, and me and my husband are both nervous. Now that we have our sons…" The doctor understood right away just why the couple want an experienced nurse. "Ma'am, I completely understand why that's the case." Gabby agreed with her doctor as she said that, before smiling. "Thank you for understanding." Dr. Bailey smiled as Gabby looked at her, clearly able to see that the wife truly was worried about the fact that she was going to loose one of her sons; and that was a still a worry for her.

Dr. Bailey's POV:
As I looked at the new mother this morning, I couldn't help but feel horrible for her; and I couldn't help but understand just why she wanted an experienced nurse, rather than a student nurse (like Alicia Mallory). "I am so sorry Ms. Casey, and I promise that we will update your chart to make sure that we only place the best team on your case." I then proceeded to walk over to the computer and opened it with the password that we have for all of our patient computers. After which, I went ahead and opened my patient's chart so that I could input the new information in the notes. 'Patient has history with loss of child, requests that no student nurses take care of her twins overnight. -Dr. Bailey, April 22, 2019 (8:19 AM)' I then went to look at the stats that I have. "I can see that you woke up a couple times in the middle of the night Ms. Casey, and I believe we gave you sleep medication. Do you need a higher dose tonight?" My patient shook her head, sighing.

"No. I understand your reasons, but I can't be out cold; not when my husband has PTSD." I just looked at my patient. "Army?" Ms. Casey shook her head. "No, it's complicated; former firefighter first of all, some of it related to how we lost our first pregnancy." I then understood, before putting it in the notes. 'These instructions are to be followed precisely, as father has PTSD.' And it seemed as if my patient knew I just wrote that down, as she spoke to me about it. "I can only assume that you wrote it down?" I sighed. "It's just more information that can help us give you the best care, but how are you so aware of what I'm doing?" Ms. Casey smiled. "I worked as a paramedic in a previous life. Chicago Fire Department, 2006-2018." I smiled when I heard Ms. Casey tell me that. "Well, I thank you for your service." Ms. Casey agreed. "My husband was a firefighter in the same department, retiring with the rank of Captain in 2018; PTSD." I agreed and smiled.

"Well, I thank him for his service too. There's nothing like firefighters. I'm married to one myself, and boy do they look good at night; the workouts that they have to do." Ms. Casey laughed as I said that, agreeing with me as she laid down in bed. "Trust me, that's not why I love my husband; rather, I love him because of his big heart." I agreed with Ms. Casey when she said that, smiling. "Well, I'm sure you do; I'm not sure if I could give birth to twins like you did Ms. Casey." The mother laughed as I said that, smiling at me. "Please, call me Gabby. I am going to get annoyed with that. Plus, you're basically going to be seeing my husband half-naked at times; we're still getting used to the weather." I agreed with her when she said that. "I can only imagine. I've been there for a conference, and I hated the winter weather that I had to deal with; later missed my daughter's concert because of a stupid snow storm in both Indiana and Colorado. Got to visit Denver though."

Ms. Casey laughed. "Oh doc, you have experienced nothing until you've ridden in the back of an ambulance in the middle of winter; where there's a snow storm, and a bunch of lake effect snow. My firehouse was right downtown, in the loop by the university." I agreed with my patient when she said that, well aware that I can't compare. "Well, I am not going to complain ever again." My patient laughed as she said that. "Well, you can make up for it by getting me something." I turned to look at my patient. "And what might that be?" Gabby smirked.
