Hey readers, are you guys happy that we now have the other half of the Casey Family in Hawaii? Let me know what you guys think in the comments. Now, I haven't yet decided how I plan on balancing the whole Hospital vs Halstead time stuff; nor have I figured out whether I'm going to do independent Casey stuff (Nancy, Christie and Violet) at the house. So, I've got to figure that out yet; but if you guys have any requests in that area, then I would love to know what you guys think so that I can give you guys what you want. Send me messages or write me in the comments. But right now, I'm going to the hospital.
The Caseys: Parenthood Begins - Short Story
Chapter Seven
He was First, and So am I.
She made a point to get out of the house, and the boys to school early this morning; after all, she wanted to get to the hospital before other people had a chance to get there. After all, she clearly remembered that Gabby's brother was going to pick up Matt's family at the airport; also, Jay said that he was going to pick up his brothers. So, that left her alone at the office (other than Kelly and Stella) with nothing to do (as her boys were at school). So, she decided to take this chance that she had to try and be one of the first people (other than their parents) to meet the newest members of her (extended) family; her honorary nephews Jacob and Matteo. At least, that was what she was going to consider the Casey twins; after all, her late husband (Andy) always saw Matt as a brother. Therefore, that meant that she saw him as a brother-in-law, along with being the godfather to her sons; but he was now a father, which is a title she knows Matt craved for a long time.
So, she was really hoping that she could be the first of their friends to see him in that new role; and lucky for her, there was a nurse at the desk in the maternity ward. "Good morning." Looking up, the nurse smiled at the sight of one of the first guests to the maternity ward today. "Good morning. Let me guess, a friend of yours gave birth?" Heather laughed as she heard the nurse ask her that. "Yes. My name is Heather Darden, and I am actually looking for the Casey Hospital Suite." The nurse then proceeded to look up the room on the computer, before noticing that there was a password required for entry. "Password?" Heather was confused when she heard the nurse say that there was a password. "What?" The nurse looked at the woman as she stood there, before proceeding to explain what she meant. "Mr. Casey is in the VIP Suite. If you don't have a password, then you can't get in." Heather took a breath, starting to think of possible passwords.
"Okay, I'm going to say this on a whim. Is the password Andy?" The nurse then proceeded to grab the phone in front of her, clearly concerned for her patients. Seeing her do just that, Heather got scared. "Please, just wait. Give me a second." Going to grab her own phone, Heather sighed as she proceeded to find Matt's contact in her phone so that she could call him; maybe then, she could be let into the hospital room. Putting her phone up to her ear, Heather took a breath as she was nervous; however, her nervousness soon turned into relief when Matt answered the call. "Hey, morning…" Heather then got right to it. "You put a password on your hospital suite?" Matt sighed as he heard Heather say that, before deciding to ask her to speak to the nurse. "Here, can you put me on speakerphone? God, I thought I already dealt with this." Heather agreed with her son's godfather, proceeding to put her phone on speakerphone so that he can speak to the nurse.
"Good morning, which nurse am I speaking to this morning?" Speaking up, the nurse was a bit nervous. "Good morning Mr. Casey, this is Nurse Adams." Matt sighed. "Nurse Adams, this is my late best friend's widow. The password is Andy? That was her late husband's name. Please allow her to come into the suite. Also, I said that the passcode was only to be used at night!" Nurse Adams agreed with the new father. "My apologies Mr. Casey." Matt agreed with her as she said that. "We will speak when you're in our suite later. Please bring Ms. Darden. Also, I just got a text from my brother-in-law Antonio. Himself, my mother-in-law Camila, my sister Christie, and my niece Violet along with our friends Jay and Alex are on their way. Possibly also my friends Will and Natalie. Please allow them into my suite." Nurse Adams agreed with Matt. "Of course, Mr. Casey." Heather then went to speak to Matt. "Thanks Matt." Matt agreed with Heather this morning, sorry as well.
"Sorry about this." Heather then went to hang up her phone, taking a breath before going ahead with looking at the nurse. "My apologies ma'am." Heather agreed. "And I'm sorry for your loss Ms. Darden." Heather agreed with the nurse when she said that, ready to make her way back to Matt and Gabby's hospital room so that she can meet the lucky boys who now have the honor to call Matt and Gabby their loving parents. God, she already knows that Matt is going to be such a great dad; and she can say that's the case based on how he raised her boys during that time while she was in jail, a year after the death of Andy. After that DUI, the DUI that really made her realize that she really needs to smarten up for her sons; after all, she doesn't want to let her sons lose another parent.
Heather's POV:
As I walked into the Casey Maternity Suite this morning, I just shook my head due to the fact that they had a password; let alone it be my late husband's name. God, they really have an explanation to give me. "Did you really need to put a password?" Matt laughed as he looked at me while I walked up to him. "I specifically told them that it was only supposed to be used for purchases that we make, and not for allowing people in during the day. We didn't tell anybody other than family and friends what hospital we're at, so that means that we don't need to figure that out." I agreed with Matt as he said that, glad that he was just using it for purchases; after which, I turned to look at Gabby as she finished eating breakfast. "How's the food here at the hospital?" Gabby smirked. "I just had the best pancakes." I looked at her, shocked; I didn't get pancakes when I gave birth to Ben and Griffin. "Pancakes? Really? I don't remember getting that option in Chicago!"
Scratching the back of his neck, Matt looked at me. "We got to create a custom menu due to the fact that we're in a private suite." I looked at Matt as he said that, quite shocked. "Seriously? That better be part of our benefits' package. Heaven knows that my boys are going to break their limbs here and get in the hospital." Matt laughed as I said that. "Of course. Plus, you know I'd do anything for Ben and Griffin; I see them like my first sons." Gabby turned her head when she heard Matt say that. "But not your first priorities." Turning to look at his wife, Matt shook his head before making his way over to the woman he loves. Leaning over her, Matt smirked as he bent down and proceeded to kiss her softly. "You and the boys will always be my priority, I promise." Gabby agreed with Matt as he said that, smiling at the man she loves. "So, it looks like you're no longer just a surrogate father to my sons; you're actually a father man. Congratulations you guys."
Matt agreed with me as I said that, smiling as he looked at me while holding Gabby's hand and just looked down at her. Turning my head, I looked at Gabby. "And you like quite comfortable there Ms. Casey, probably much more comfortable than Mr. Casey was last night; how's your back Matt? I remember when we had Ben and Griffin that Andy's back was fucked!" Matt laughed. "You don't have to remind me of that. I had to support him on Truck 81 to make sure that he didn't get hurt." Matt then took a breath, obviously starting to get a bit of PTSD. "Hey, hey…" I then walked over to Matt so that I could hug him. "Hey, come here." Matt agreed with me before coming to hug me. "Matt, you did everything you could. I will say that a thousand times before you think otherwise, I mean that." Matt took a breath, agreeing with me as I said that. "Right, thanks." Gabby then looked up at her loving husband. "It's just a touchy subject." Matt agreed with her.
"As you know, it's part of my PTSD; and my medicine hasn't yet kicked in." I agreed with Matt as he said that, really happy that he was taking medication to treat his PTSD. "I'm glad that you finally got medication, I'm sure it helps." Matt sighed. "I'm not going to say anything else before I start going crazy, and just…" Gabby then proceeded to grab Matt's hand. "Hey, baby; look at me." Matt agreed with Gabby, turning his head to look down at the woman he loves. "It's all okay? I promise." Matt agreed with his beautiful wife when she said that, smiling as she bent down and proceeded to kiss her forehead softly. "Listen, how about you do me a favor…" Gabby then went to grab her water bottle. "Go fill that up for me, and then breathe. Take a breath, stay in there until you're calm okay?" Matt agreed with Gabby when she said that, proceeding to walk away so that he can go do as he was told this morning; at the same time, I looked at Gabby.
"Has he been worried like that for a while?" Gabby sighed. "He's been okay. You remember how it was last time? I think we already told you about it since you weren't there." I sighed when I heard Gabby say that, well aware of just what she's feeling. Afterwards, I went ahead and proceeded to make my way over to one of the chairs that they have in here so that I can sit down. Seeing that Matt was still gone, I smiled at her. "So, have you started yet?" Gabby laughed when I asked her that, well aware of just what I was talking about. She was thinking of doing some sketching while she's recovering in the hospital. "I have yet to grab it from my sketch pad, because my husband REFUSES TO ALLOW ME TO BE CREATIVE." I could tell that Gabby said the last part on purpose. "Let me guess, he's giving you a maximum amount of time to work?" Coming out of the washroom, Matt explained what he was really doing. "She has stuff to do before she can do that."
Gabby just looked at Matt when he said that. "I already promised that I would wait for everybody to visit, then I would go back to designing. Now, what else do I have to do when you can always work…" I then went to remember something. "Speaking of designs we're still working on, I want to give you an update…" Matt sighed, stopping me. "Gabby, we already spoke about that. You know what you need to do." Gabby just looked at her husband as he said that. "And what would that be?" Matt smiled. "You need to pump some milk for the boys." Gabby then realized that, while turning to look at Jacob and Matteo. "Right, I forgot." Matt agreed with Gabby as she said that, before proceeding to make his way over to the boys. He then looked down at him, smiling as he went to look at the boys he loves more than anything; I can already see that he loves them more than anything in the entire world. "Let me guess, he already loves those boys more than anything?"
Gabby laughed as I asked her that. "Heck, I already think that he loves them more than he loves me." Turning his head once he heard Gabby say that she thinks that he loves the boys more than he loves her, his wife; Matt shook his head as that was definitely not the truth. Matt will always love his wife much more than his sons, as she was the one who gave them to her. "Baby, we both know that's not the truth. We both know that I will always love you more than the boys, especially since you're the one that gave me the boys." Gabby smiled when Matt said that, agreeing with him. After which, Matt proceeded to walk over to her this morning; grabbing her hand afterwards, Matt smiled. "Want me to sit down with you? You can sit down in my lap and cuddle up to me, jut like I know you want to do." But before he completed the offer, he turned to look at me to make sure that I was okay with that. "I mean, only if that's okay with you Heather. I don't want to make…"
I agreed with Matt when he asked me if it'd be okay if they sit together in bed, with Gabby in his lap as they cuddled up to each other this morning; and it's definitely okay for them to do that. "Hey, of course it is guys. I want you guys to be happy, and I want Gabby to be comfortable; and if that means that you guys need to sit together like that in bed, then that's what you guys are going to do." Matt smiled, agreeing with me as I said that; looking at Gabby, Matt watched as she slipped over in the hospital bed. At the same time, Matt proceeded to get in bed with her so that he can hold her close to him.
Sitting down in Matt's lap shortly after he climbed into bed with her this morning, Gabby smirked as she went ahead and laid down in his arms, wrapping her arms around his torso at the same time; and boy, was this mother comfortable. At the same time, Matt wrapped his arms around Gabby while kissing the top of her head. He then ran his hand up and down her back as that was definitely something that she wanted to feel right now, her loving husband holding her close to her as she relaxed in bed with each other. Kissing the top of his wife's head, Matt smiled before turning his head to look at Heather. "So, how are the boys adjusting to their life here in Hawaii?" Heather laughed when Matt asked her that. "They love it, much better than the snow. They love taking a swim in the ocean every once and a while." Matt agreed with Heather when she said that, clearly able to see that she was happy here as well. "You happy here too?" Heather agreed with Matt.
"Oh, I am definitely happy here too; and it's all thanks to you guys." Gabby looked at Heather when she said that, confused as to why she just said that it was all thanks to the both of them. "Why do you say that?" Heather smiled at the couple. "Had Matt not inherited money, I wouldn't have this new life here; this new life that also includes a nice job." Matt agreed with Heather when she said that, smiling as he started to think about just how much of a different he's made in his friend's lives; the lives of all of the people that he loves. Just the way they now all have jobs because of him, and are much happier; it's just perfect, and he's glad that he's given them a chance to have this life. Putting her hand on top of Matt's heart, Gabby smiled as she got very comfortable with the man of her dreams; at the same time, Matt wrapped his arm around his back while kissing the top of her head who seems to be very comfortable in his arms right now. "Comfortable?" Gabby agreed.
Heather then turned to look at Gabby. "Do you need to get some rest Gabby?" Gabby sighed when Heather asked the couple whether she needs to get some rest. "I would like to take it easy before we have a bunch of family come." Matt then looked at his wife, pressing his lips against her forehead. "Baby, if you want; I can call my family, and I can ask them to come tomorrow. They can go rest and just take it easy if you're tired." That's when Matt heard his mother's voice. "I hope that doesn't include me." Matt was shocked when he heard his mom's voice. "Mom?" Gabby then realized that she needs to get out of Matt's arms. "Go ahead baby." Matt agreed with Gabby as she said that, smiling as he watched his mom walk into their room so that he can make his way over to her. He then proceeded to smile as he walked up to his mother and just hugged her this morning. "God, what the heck are you doing here?" Nancy Mathies smiled as he asked her that.
"Sorry Heather, this is my mom Nancy. Sorry about the boxers by the way." Heather agreed with Matt when he said that. "Pleasure to meet you Nancy." Matt then smiled as he looked at Heather. "Heather, I love you but…I need to introduce my mom to her grandsons." Heather laughed. "It's okay, I have plans anyways. I'm meeting Georgina and Alex for lunch." Matt was confused. "Remind me who…" Matt then remembered. "Oh, Andy's parents. Tell them I said hi." Heather agreed with Matt as he said that, proceeding to walk away. At the same time, Matt smiled as he hugged his mom once again. "What the heck are you doing here mom? I have been worried sick about you." Nancy sighed when Matt said that. "It's a long story." That's when Matt heard his sister come into the room. "One that I am going to make sure that you get to hear from me too." Turning to face his sister, Matt smiled as he went to hug her. "How are you sis?" Matt then smiled at Violet. "Violet, how are you?"
Violet then went ahead and hugged her uncle. "Nice to see you again, I miss you in Chicago." Matt agreed with Violet when she said that. "I miss Chicago too, but I can't be there anymore." Gabby took a breath when she heard her husband say that. "You finally going to talk to your family about it while you're here?" Christie then looked at her brother. "You mean his PTSD?" Matt just looked at his sister as she said that. "How do you know about the fact that I have PTSD?"
Christie's POV:
When Matt asked me how I knew that he had PTSD, I took a breath and just looked at everybody. "Okay, how about we sit down first? I need to relax and take it easy after an early flight. Oh, by the way; turns out I flew right next to your business partner's brother and sister?" Matt looked at me. "You flew next to Will and Natalie? By the way, he's my employee; not my business partner." That's when Jay came over to the both of us. "Yeah, I may have said that wrong?" I then turned to look at Jay. "Tell me about it." I agreed with Jay when he said that, before smiling at him. "Thanks for the ride." Jay agreed with me when I said that, before looking at Matt. "Here, I brought this for you. You sent me that text last night that you forgot your bag. Antonio let me into your condo." Matt smiled as he went to grab the bag. "Oh thank god, those outfits." Gabby then looked at Matt. "What outfits?" Matt then smiled as he turned around to face his beautiful wife this morning.
"The outfits that we're going to bring the boys home in." I agreed with Matt when he said that, smiling. "Are we able to hold your boys?" Matt sighed. "Unfortunately, not. But listen, let's get you guys in here and sit you guys down; we can catch up as I cuddle up to Gabby in bed." Matt then turned around to face Gabby. "Do you want to put your sweats on baby?" Gabby agreed with Matt. "Can I?" Matt agreed with Gabby when she said that. "Christie, mom, Violet; go see the boys. Jacob Matthew is on the left, Matteo Andrew is on the right. I'm going to help Gabby get changed." I agreed with Matt when he sad that, smiling at him. At the same time, he walked up to Gabby as she sat him. "Hey, take it easy babe." Gabby agreed with Matt as he said that. After which, Matt went to help Gabby up out of bed; then they made their way to the washroom. At the same time, I made my way over to the sink so that I can wash my hands. "Violet, hands please."
Matt agreed with me. "Thanks sis. Mom, you too." My mom laughed when she said that as we all went to go wash our hands this morning so that we can meet the newest members of our family; Jacob and Matteo Casey.
