Chapter 20

Callie looked at the road in front of her, she looked at the cars driving by, the signals switching from red to green and the back again. She noticed the street lights as her car zoomed by. The brunette glanced to her side where Arizona had managed to curl herself up in a ball. She had stopped crying now but this phase of her grief seemed scarier. She refused to talk to even acknowledge anything that was going on around her. She tired to get her to pack something for there trip but Arizona just sat there and did nothing. She stared at the floor in front of her.

She had noticed the blonde's arms dotting up with goosebumps on her arms, and the slight shiver, so Callie had put her suit jacket on top of her. Arizona was now using it as a security blanket as she watched the city leave her by.

The brunette timidly reached out her hand and placed it on the fair thigh as a way to reassure her that she would be there for her in tough times. Although it was a gesture to promise comfort for the blonde, it was more for herself. She wanted to feel the warm flesh beneath her fingers, to see any signs of life in her. Callie stopped by the red light to glance beside her. She reached and grabbed a bottle of water before tapping it on her thigh. The blonde momentarily turned around to look at her but soon faced the window.

"B, you need to try to drink some water." She tried, but once again, she did not get a response.

Callie came to a stop right by the jet before exiting out. She handed her car keys to one of her men before going to Arizona's side of the door. She opened her door for her before helping her out. This time Arizona leaned her whole bodyweight on Callie as she guided the two of them up the stairs.

"Travelling light Ms. Torres?" Her pilot asked but Callie was in no mood to make small talk.

"Are we ready for takeoff?"

"Yes, we are looking at a flight time of three hours and thirty minutes with clear skies."

Callie first buckled Arizona in her set before taking her seat across from her. She put the water bottle beside just in case she decided to take up on her offer and drink some. The brunette reached out to cradle the pale palm in her own but it just sat on top of hers, lifeless.

"There's a bed in here, if you'd like to lie down." Callie tried but once again she got no response.

Once the flight was in air, Callie thought she'd stretch out her legs, maybe fly the plane for a bit so that she could finally think, or not think. "Press the button if you need me. I'll be back." Just as the brunette unbuckled her seatbelt and got up to leave, she looked back one more time, hoping for something, anything, but once again, she got nothing.

Callie had almost forgotten about making any bookings for stay, any hotel reservations. This was not New York, it was not Seattle, she didn't have any business in this random town of Michigan. This car ride to the hospital was pretty scary for her. She had no control right now. She had no idea what the drivers' credentials were, if he had been in any accidents. It was nerve wracking not knowing exactly where they were going but just the name and a few pictures of the hospital.

Soon as the car came to a gentle stop, Callie paid the driver before getting out. Arizona seemed to have had a bit of improvement. She was ware and responding but she still wasn't talking. The brunette had also managed to convince her to take sip of water.

Callie approached the nurse behind the desk.

"We are looking for Mr. Robbins. He was brought in here yesterday."

"Are you family."

"Yeah, we- " before Callie could finish answering an older blonde woman came and tightly hugged Arizona.

"Sweetie! Oh, look at you! You made it."

Callie looked at the exchange between the two women. It was clear to her that this woman was definitely Arizona's mom, she's was a carbon copy of her, just this lady had dark brown eyes.

"And you are?" the lady asked as she turned towards Callie.

"Here to help as much as I can!" the brunette replied.

"Where's dad?" A small whispered came.

Callie turned around to see that the blonde had finally uttered something after finding out about her father.

"B- "Callie was about to ask her how she was but then the older woman cut it off.

"Sure, sweetie you two can follow me."

After a short walk through the hallway, the three women entered a patient room.

"Dad?" Arizona choked as she stood frozen on the door. Callie took in the man lying flown in runt of her. He looked to be about seventy, maybe seventy-two. He had thinning white head, buzzed short. He had a wrinkled on his forehead but all in all, he looked like a man in his seventies. The only thing that made the scene so heartbreaking was that he had a chest tube going down his throat. The tube was hooked to a machine that seemed to be making the loudest noise.

In the moment, all Callie could do was wrap her hands around the blonde's waist and hold her tightly against her chest.

"Hey, I couldn't find some coffee Ma. Wait! Phoenix?" A blonde man said that as he entered through the door.

Callie could swear that this man and the woman in her arms were twins, or siblings at the very least. The blonde removed herself from her grasp and went to hug the man.

"Tim… Dad he is-"

"I know sis, I know."

Callie took in the scene in front of her. She was clearly not wanted or needed here.

"Mumm… I'll go check on that coffee," she said as she made her way out and opened Door dash on her phone. The skies were pretty clear when they landed so she could probably hop back on the plan. Maybe pilot it herself and go to New York for a while, or maybe LA clear her head.

"Hey honey?" The older woman called out to her. "Where are you going?"

"Umm, I… honestly, I don't know."

"You're the one, aren't you?"

"What one?" Callie asked.

"The reason she smiles more, the reason she's happier and more relaxed and finally enjoying life and not taking things too seriously."

"I- I don't know, I don't think so."

The older lady framed the brunette's face in her hands.

"What's your name sweetheart?"

"Callie."

"Well Callie, it's a pleasure to finally meet the reason my daughter doesn't have a giant stick stuck in her behind."

The brunette chuckled. "The stick is still pretty much there." Callie leaned in for a hug. "I'm so sorry for your loss."

"We knew it was coming. When he was first diagnosed Daniel told me, 'Barb, please don't let me be a vegetable. I have lived a full life fighting for my country. We have raised two beautiful children. When the time comes, just think about all the memories we shared.' He was a man of honor but a huge softy inside, he wouldn't show his emotions to anyone. He would shut down and blame himself for the smallest of things, for the men he couldn't save in the Marines."

"He sounds like a wonderful person."

Barbara wiped the lone tear that made its way done her face. "She's just like him. So stubborn, so full of herself, but she's a scared little puppy on the inside. She pushes people away when she most needed them. Its really hard to get through to her, but when you do, it's so worth it."

"She doesn't need me."

Barbara straighter the tie that was around the brunette's neck. "She doesn't need you. She's independent enough not to need anyone. But she wants you."

"She has a funny way of showing it." Callie ran a hand though her hair. "I don't know what to do! I want to be there for her, but I'm just, I'm not enough."

"And why is that, Callie?"

"I'm- it just is."

Barbara patted her shoulder. "I do hope you make the right choice sweetie. But if I can give you some advice, sometimes just being there is more than enough. You might think you need big gestures, but the Robbins are pretty simple to understand. They love fiercely and passionately. They don't need some huge declaration of love or expensive presents. They just need someone to cuddle up to when they feel like the whole world is rooting against them."

"And how do I do that?"

"You got her to Michigan so that she could spend some time with her old man. You did that, I think you're smart enough to figure the rest."

Barbara's words replayed in her head several time. She did take a trip down to the cafeteria so that Arizona could have a couple of moments alone with her father and figured she could pick some food up for the family, but her mind was running at a hundred miles per hour. She thought about how they need up here, she thought about her dinner and how she blew her off, she thought about how different the night could have gone if she hadn't decided to take on an impromptu meeting.

Callie slowly made her way back to the room. She stopped by the door and watched the scene in front of her. Her mother and brother were sleeping on two separate couches while Arizona was sitting in an awkward position.

What could she do? How could she show Arizona that she was here, that show was important?

Callie slung the plastic bag over her shoulder before quietly walking over to her. She reached out and put her arm around her before she placed her palm on her lower back and encouraged her to stand up.

"You have been in that dress for a couple of hours. How about you go and get you changed?"

"Dad…"

"I know Beautiful, I know," Callie said as she hugged her and stroked her hair. "But right now, we need to get you changed, okay?"

"Dad." She repeated.

"He's not going anywhere." She said as she brushed the hair out of her face. "Your brother and mother are here, if anything changes, they'll let us know."

Callie held up her arm as the blonde leaned on her. Together the two of them made their way into the shower. Luckily for the two of them it was pretty late in the night and the showers were empty. In fact, no one was around. Callie had once again pulled some strings and let the Robbins family spend the night at the hospital.

The brunette gently guided her to one for the showers before pulling the curtain chased behind her. She placed the plastic bag in one of the corners before turning her attention back to Arizona. She then peeled her own jacket off of her before she started felling her back for a zipper. Once she pulled the zipper down the dress soon followed laving her naked. Callie bent down to remove the heels on her feet. She turned the facet on and waited till the temperature was hot enough. The blonde was already freezing and she was not going to put her in cold water and have her catch a flu. Once the temperature felt just right, she gently led her behind until her hair was under the shower.

Arizona held onto her shoulders as she felt her head being tipped back. She felt fingers running through her hair gently untangling the knots. She felt the tan hands on her skin, brushing the stress away from her skin. In no time she heard rustling on plastic before warm sweats were Bing up on her.

This is when she got a look at Callie. A clear look. She was still wearing the same suit to their dinner, but her jacket was long gone. Her tie was hanging around her neck like a noose, her usually perfectly coiffed was wet and stuck to her head. her clothes were damp. Arizona looked down at herself. She was dressed in some sweats with the hospital's logo on it.

The events of the night started coming back to her. She remembered how she felt during their date, how Callie had finally chased her only to get a call from her mother about her dad. She remembered Callie moving heaven and earth for her to be here right now so that she could be with her father. She looked down and saw Callie putting sneakers on her feet before she stood up.

"I got you a sandwich to eat. Now I know the hospital food is kind of gross, but it beats nothing-"

"I think I'm falling in love with you…"
