You can't help but feel that it would be a bad idea to distract a couple of guys who are throwing sharp, knife-like objects at one another, even if they are ninja, so you don't try to get any closer or make any noise. Then too, because they are ninja - even if Ayane and Kasumi have been pretty nice - you figure it wouldn't be a bad idea to make sure nobody else is hanging around invisibly. Again, though, to avoid disturbing the two blade-jugglers, you only channel enough ki to your eyes to awaken the passive, low-level version of your ki sight.

Under ordinary circumstances, this is where you'd start to see the life-forces of the family in front of you as four distinct, yet interconnected auras, but in this instance, you see far less. Shiden looks no different under this level of ki sight, a sign that his control over his personal energies is exceptional; even while focused on a complex task like juggling sharp objects without being cut, he wastes no energy. Kasumi's mother has a similar level of control, although you can see faint wisps of energy dancing between her and her daughter, and small arcs that reach out towards her husband and son. It's a safe bet that she loves her family deeply. The brother's aura is small, very even, and somewhat faded, all signs that it is being directly controlled. He's got a ways to go yet before he's as good as his parents, but even with the occasional spikes of brightness as he fields the incoming kunai, his aura doesn't seem much different from an ordinary person's. Finally, there's Kasumi, who radiates warm light like a tiny, happy sun. It's not that she has bad control - her aura is very even, aside from the bright arcs leaping out towards her parents and sibling, and has what looks like the early stages of the faded-out, "hidden" quality her brother's aura shows - she just seems to have an abundance of ki to start with, amplified by her feelings about her family.

And Cordelia fought this to a ring-out? Damn. You may have been seriously underestimating Queen C's skills.

Glancing out of the corner of one eye, you get your first clear look at Ayane's aura. It's not as strong as Kasumi's, but seems better controlled. The emotional impressions that come through are also very different; if Kasumi is the sun, bright and warm and unmistakeable, then Ayane is the moon, cool, distant, and shadowed.

Aside from the five confirmed ninjas and Altria - who you are careful not to look too closely at, passive scan or not - you don't see any auras on the balcony, or in the mouths of the nearest corridors. This isn't quite as reassuring as it might have been under other circumstances, since the suppressed auras of the two adults indicate that someone with sufficient training and talent can elude your ki sight, especially at this low level. There are a number of pillars, corners, tall planters, and vending machines that other ninjas could be hiding behind, and if they happen to know the equivalent of an invisibility, there could be dozens of them hiding in plain sight... or maybe that's just your paranoia talking.

Gained Watchful E

As you start to wonder whether you should take your ki scanning up a notch, the two older males bring their little exhibition to an end. Kasumi and her mother applaud.

What do you do?
