Taking a breath, you follow Altria's lead.

"I've seen my Beast a few times," you admit. "It was only ever in dreams, though, and they were never very clear, or frequent. I didn't have a waking vision of it until yesterday, when I fought Kahlua." Which was also the first time you saw someone else's soul, or used your new super mode technique - or competed in a tournament, beat someone in a fight that wasn't just a sparring match in the dojo, used your powers in view of the public, met a ninja...

A real day of firsts, all things considered.

"You've seen it," Shiden repeats. "But not actually contacted it?"

You shake your head. "The closest I've ever come to that was that exchange of not-quite-final attacks with Altria. Even that was more..." You frown, searching for a proper description.

"Instinctive," Altria supplies.

"Yes, that. I didn't get in touch with the Beast consciously, I just wanted to beat Altria at the same time that it wanted to beat the Dragon. And should I be worried that I'm talking about a part of my own soul like it was a separate entity?"

"To a certain extent, your spirit beast is separate from you," Ayame tells you gently. "It's a link to everything beyond you, a guide to your interactions with the world and all the creatures living in it. And at the same time, it's still part of you." She smiles. "Confusing, isn't it?"

"Yes," you agree. Though you might have exchanged the word "confusing" for "alarming," because you can't imagine how Ganon, of all creatures, is supposed to be a guide to anything except mindless destruction. Granted, you do live in Sunnydale, which has many residents that are more than deserving of a little of the old ultraviolence... you shake your head, pushing that tempting thought aside.

"Do I have one, Mama?" Kasumi asks.

"Everyone does, Kasumi. It's just very unusual for one's spirit animal to manifest itself as vividly as your friends' guides have. That Miss Drake's dragon is so active is hardly surprising - dragons are many things, but not often subtle." A subtle frown creases the woman's lovely face. "I am somewhat puzzled by your case, though, Alexander. The Boar is a forceful guide in its own right, but I have never heard of it carrying the power to challenge a dragon."

You're not sure how to respond to that. You know perfectly well why the echo of Ganon in your soul was able to match up to the image of the Dragon in Altria's, but it's not a topic you want to broach at this time. Or at all.

"A matter for another time, I suspect, dear," Shiden says. "We did, after all, wish to discuss Miss Drake's situation."

"Of course, Husband."

"On that matter, sir," Altria says, "Alexander made some... interesting speculations while we were walking here from the cafeteria."

"Oh?" Shiden asks curiously.

After glancing at you and getting a nod, Altria proceeds to recount most of what you said to Ayane. She doesn't recite it verbatim, and she doesn't suggest that Ayane was hinting at the correct answers you reached, but she covers the value of information about dragons, the likelihood that the family knows someone other than Altria who has a link to dragons, and how that link is most likely different from Altria's connection. Kasumi and Hayate both look impressed by the summary, while Ayame covers her mouth, laughing softly.

"Those are accurate assessments," Shiden says, giving you an approving nod. "As it happens, yes, we do know a clan who are associated with dragons. And yes, their connection manifests rather differently from yours, Miss Drake, or at least considerably less overtly; it has been many generations since the dragons walked openly amongst men, and despite all efforts at preservation, their influence has waned, their gifts being lost to mischance or destroyed by malice. Even so, that clan is the only line I know of that has maintained a clear link to the dragons into the modern age - and believe me when I say that many people have looked very hard for a very long time trying to find others."

"For many different reasons, I would venture," Altria adds.

Shiden nods slowly. "Indeed. There have been attempts to uncover that clan in the past, either to steal the secrets and treasures that they still guard, or simply to wipe them out; there will be other attempts in the future. Considering how their numbers have declined over time, the discovery of a powerful, gifted child that might be a long-lost relative would be an ideal lure to draw them out."

Seems like you're not the only one who believes in taking sensible precautions.
