You glance in Ambrose's direction, making sure he's out of earshot and once again engaging the young lady in conversation. Only then do you answer Altria's question.

"In a word? Yes. I got a good look at Beryl's magical capacity, affinities, and techniques during her match, and to be honest, even if I was at full strength, she'd still be the better magic-user. I have serious doubts that my ki techniques could make up the difference - and as it is, I'm at less than a third of my capacity. Beryl's already caught me scanning her once, and while she let me off the first time with an unfriendly look, if I keep provoking her, she might decide to be more direct. I'd say that spying on her or getting her kicked out of the tournament would qualify as provocation, wouldn't you?"

"True," Altria grudgingly admits. "Even so, Alexander, I very much dislike allowing someone who caused as much fright and injury as there was yesterday to simply... get away with it."

"And I get that. Really, I do. Everything I know about magic tells me that Beryl is, at best, messing around with dangerous powers, and at worst, in need of a smiting - either way, she merits some kind of intervention. I also know that I don't have the power, the information, or the authority to call her out about summoning a life-sucking shadow monster and letting it run loose, without getting myself into more trouble than I can handle. Someday, when I'm older, stronger, and better-informed, I will be able to deal with a problem like Beryl head-on, but for right now, I'm a kid who found something scary, dangerous, and way out of my league. Like Ambrose said, all I'm supposed to do in a situation like that is tell an adult about it, and I have - and for once in my life, I actually have adults I can go to about a supernatural problem." You shake your head, half-amazed at the concept. "Anyway, I've done my reasonable best to get a positive outcome from this mess, without putting myself in any more danger. Where things go from here is up to the old men, and that's fine by me."

You regard Altria closely as she considers your words. She seems... hesitant. Your British friend clearly has firm ideas about Right and Wrong, as well as the guts to stick her to convictions, and you have the feeling that if you hadn't hung around to talk to her, she might have decided to take independent action. You really hope that Altria wouldn't have been so reckless as to go snooping around after a sorceress of Beryl's caliber, but you can't entirely set aside a suspicion that she might have done exactly that. As it is, you doubt you've completely convinced Altria to let the matter go for now, merely given her cause to stop and think on her course of action.
