The methods of observation that you employed in the first round of these division finals served you admirably, and on the whole, you see no reason to change them. The singular exception, of course, is whether or not it would be a worthwhile endeavor to magically monitor Beryl's next bout, and given how you just spent several minutes talking Altria out of doing anything that might tip off - or simply tick off - the teen sorceress, you'd feel like quite the little hypocrite if you went ahead and scanned the older girl anyway, when she obviously didn't care for it in the previous round.

So you settle in as the first match begins, bringing up your ki sight and keeping the words of your divination spell primed and ready to chant at the first sign of any magic that isn't linked to Beryl.

Speaking of Beryl, her overt use of flashy and effective spells in the final bout of the first round seems to have touched off a competetive spark in the remaining fighters. From the word "Go," the first match is a duel of Body Flickers, ki blasts, clashing auras, and other techniques you've not seen before. One of these involves a ki-based illusion, and another is the charging of weapons with ki - the latter causing the spear and paired tonfa subjected to it to glow and hum faintly, then suddenly flare and emit sharp cracks at the moment of impact. You cast a divination the moment the first of these new skills is demonstrated, just to make sure that they really are based entirely on ki. Even with all the extra flash and thunder, the martial skill of the fighters doesn't diminish in the slightest - they actually step up their game a bit from what you recall of their matches in the first round. Ultimately, the first bout ends with a win for the tonfa user, who manages to trap the blunted head of his opponent's weapon with his own tools, drag it down, and then bring a doubtlessly ki-reinforced heel down on it, sundering the shaft. That doesn't actually end the fight - the spear user immediately begins whipping the splintered butt of his weapon around with fair skill - but it does shift the momentum of the match in the tonfa-wielder's favor, and he never loses it thereafter.

The other second-round fights follow very similar patterns: everybody who knows ki techniques starts using them; the demonic contestants shed their human guises as soon as the Announcer proclaims their matches on; and anyone with magic begins casting spells. No technical skill is lost, and no energy is wasted: through your ki sight, you can still see the excellent control of personal energies the Under Eighteens fighters displayed in the first round; and once the magic comes out, it proves to be just as well-managed.

The second match is between a pale girl whose aura isn't human and who performs some very impressive tricks involving ice - not the least of which is the creation of large, vicious-looking but blunted claws over her otherwise dainty hands - and a fairly straightforward gi-wearing martial artist type with well-honed ki techniques under his belt. For a while, it looks like the ice-girl's ability to spawn clones of herself composed of ice and unleash a localized blizzard in the ring will take the fight, but her opponent toughs out the indoor snowstorm and smashes his way through the clones, the ice-walls, and several types of projectiles. His ki skills clearly involve a well-developed damage reduction or accelerated healing, if not both, and once he gets close enough to lay his mitts on the snow girl - the "mitts" in this case being some sort of fingerless metallic gauntlets that cover half his forearms - the match quickly turns around.

The third bout showcases two swordsmen, one human, the other a red-skinned part-demon whose precise ancestry you don't recognize, and which neither Briar nor Cordelia can provide when they are questioned. It's one of the more straightforward contests this round, although when the two boys reinforce their weapons - one with glowing blue-white ki, the other with his reddish demonic aura, which you have to resort to divination to follow correctly - you start having serious Star Wars flashbacks. The demon ultimately disarms his foe, using a technique you simply don't have the skill to follow, and holds his weapon to the other boy's neck in a clear call for surrender - which he receives. After the vanquished fighter retrieves his weapon, the pair leave the ring with their heads together, enthusiastically talking shop. Altria probably enjoyed that match.

In the fourth match, Hayate goes up against a girl who's dressed like one of those traditional shrine maidens, and fights with a combination of a long-bladed pole weapon that Sakaki helpfully identifies as a naginata, fairly basic ki techniques, and a type of mystical power you've never previously encountered in this life. You can't see it with ki sight, and it's likewise invisible under your standard magical detection spell, yet that doesn't stop the shrine-girl from imbuing the energy into one of several inked paper wards she carries, and using that to neutralize a fire technique Hayate launches at her. The ward is consumed, but the girl's hand is unmarred by ash or the redness one would expect after getting that close to open flame. Casting another spell, you're finally able to see that what the girl is channeling is the energy of her own spirit, mingled with spiritual energy from a source that lies somewhere far outside the arena, but which seems to be focused on a beaded necklace she wears. You don't get to see the girl use her power again in the fight, as Hayate forgoes further ninja magic and focuses on pure melee, and the shrine maiden makes no further attempt to pray for aid - you can't tell whether that's because she knows it won't do anything to a human, or because keeping up with Hayate's assault is taking up all her breath and concentration. In the end, despite some dazzling work with that heavy spear of hers, the shrine girl is defeated.

The fifth match pits a very handsome young man carrying a forked javelin against an equally-lovely young woman armed with a whip and a blunted blade that could be a long knife or a short sword. Under ki sight, you're able to discern that neither of the pair is as human as they appear, and in fact, the girl's aura is troublingly familiar.

Then both of them sprout horns, bat-like wings, claws and fangs, and spade-tipped tails - and in the male's case, cloven hooves.

"Oh, hell," Briar groans. "Incubus versus succubus. Alex, Cordy, close your eyes; there's no way this is going to be PG-13."
