The sight of your previously-unaccounted for friend, alive and well (if a little banged up), comes as a considerable relief. Between ninja assassins, explosions, panicking crowds, and all manner of supernatural fighters, you'd imagined any number of unhappy outcomes for Ayane, and yet, here she is, with nothing more serious than a few bruises to show for the experience. Nothing more that you can see, at least. You know you're probably going to have a nightmare or two about those poor guys who didn't make it through the bombing, and you have memories - admittedly, vague ones - of lots of things just as bad as that, if not worse. You can't imagine that Ayane - or any of the other girls, for that matter - won't be having some bad dreams of their own after this incident.

As much as the sight of Ayane reassures you, it also leaves you a bit curious. Why is she in here with you, and where is everybody else? Are Briar, Cordy, and Lu-sensei at the safehouse, or did they get tied up dealing with local law enforcement? Just what was all that chaos at the arena about, and how did it turn out? These and other questions flash through your mind, as does the tantalizing notion that answers might be found by waking Ayane up, or stepping out that door.

In the end, you decide that appeasing your curiosity can wait. If there were urgent matters that you needed to be told of, somebody would have woken you up - and since that didn't happen, it seems a safe assumption that all is well, and the ninja were polite enough to let you get on with your meditation undisturbed. It only seems fair for you to extend the same courtesy to Ayane. And since there isn't a whole lot else to do in this room that wouldn't risk waking her up, you close your eyes again and settle back into meditation.

The next thing you know, you're lying on your side, face pressed against uncomfortably solid floorboards, with a mildly stiffness that starts in your neck runs straight down to the base of your spine. Both of your legs seem to be asleep, your stomach aches for some reason, and your thoughts are fuzzy. What happened?

...

Crap. You didn't fall asleep in the middle of meditation, did you?

Looking around as best you can, you find that you're still in that windowless ninja living room. Ayane is still seated where she was, but she's awake and staring at you, traces of a smile hovering about her lips. She's not the only one: Cordelia, Kasumi, Altria, and Briar are all gathered around the room; all of the human girls are smiling to one extent or another, even if Altria and Kasumi are trying to hide it; and you can't escape the feeling that Briar is grinning as well.

"Wha?" you ask, intelligently.

"Told you he was asleep," Cordelia declares to the room, before fixing you with her brightest, cheeriest, "I am going to make your life HELL, and I will enjoy every second of it" smile. "Wakey-wakey, Alex!"

Double crap. Not only did you fall asleep, you're having a nightmare. That's the only explanation, unless a local Hellmouth has spontaneously blown open and sucked Tokyo into the netherworld.
