Since Cordelia is the only person in the room who seems to be genuinely upset with you, you decide to keep your attention focused on her.
"So Cordy, after we split up-"
"You mean after you used an untested spell to run straight into a fight, leaving me alone with Vampire Princess Barbie and her little sisters? And speaking of which, did you KNOW that they were vampires? Because friend or not, world champ or not, if you tell me you knowingly left me alone with a bunch of bloodsuckers, I'll kick your butt right here and now."
You blink, as several details fall into place. The theme of blood and bat-wings in that vision when your aura clashed with Kahlua's, the fangs, the obvious trappings of wealth, influence, and personal power - it all fits. But still, vampires? Really? Okay, glass exterior wall aside, there weren't all that many windows in the arena complex, so maybe they could have avoided sunlight, but Kahlua was wearing a couple of tiny crosses as earrings! They should have seared her ears off, at the very least!
Evidently your confusion is obvious on your face, because Ayane takes pity on you. "Cordelia and Briar mentioned that you're only really familiar with the demonic, corpse-infesting type of vampire. The Shuzen family are part of a completely separate breed, with no actual demonic lineage. They live and breathe and eat like any other creature, they just happen to need to drink blood as well."
Cordelia studies your expression closely. "You really didn't know?"
"I knew they weren't human," you clarify. "And yeah, now that I stop and look back on it, there were a bunch of hints that I'm tempted to kick myself for missing - and that's not an invitation, Cordy," you add quickly, taking a slightly-shaky step back. "Still, we spent enough time with them without any threats being exchanged, Miss Akasha was really nice, and there was all that formal stuff about manners and hospitality - I figured you'd be safe with them. Was I wrong?"
The brunette scowls. "That depends on your definition of 'safe.'"
Oh boy. "What happened?" you sigh.
"Well, not too long after you disappeared into that glowing doorway, a couple of the security guys stopped by and suggested, politely, that we ought to vacate the area. Kokoa got all pouty about missing the fight, but the other two scolded her down and agreed to leave. We got as far as the hall when these two dorks in brown pajamas came screaming out of a side-corridor, with about a million bats on their tails."
Oh, crud.
"The next thing I know, all three of those girls get this look, like they've just walked into a room full of kittens and puppies - and so while I'm trying to get away from these squeaky flying mice before they get all tangled up in my hair, the Shuzen sisters are strolling through the swarm, neat as you please, cooing over how cute all the little winged rats are." Brown eyes glare. "I understand I have you to thank for that little episode, Mister Mighty Sorcerer."
A Gerudo curse hovers on your lips, but goes unsaid. "You weren't hurt, though, right?"
"The bats seemed more interested in playing with the vampire-girls than in attacking anybody," Cordelia grouchily admits. "And the furry little menaces disappeared not too long after they showed up. I don't know what happened to the ninja they were chasing; I guess they saw the bats attack a bunch of little girls and took the opportunity to save their own necks. Jerks."
"And after that?"
"The security guys escorted us to the cafeteria. Their buddies had a bunch of people there, getting first aid, making sure families were together, that sort of thing. They got really nervous when Akasha's name was mentioned; I guess word got around that she was on the warpath before everything went nuts." Cordy shrugs. "Anyway, Lu-sensei and Briar showed up a couple of minutes later, and the medic they had on duty saw the scratches and bloodstains on Sensei's clothes and threw a fit. After that, it was off to the infirmary, then meeting the cops, then meeting some really old guys in robes, then arguing with the old guys, then the old guys arguing with the cops, then the medics shouting at everybody - and then Akasha and Ambrose came along, and the old guys got very helpful. It still took forever to sort everything out with the police, and Akasha took the girls straight home as soon as she could, while Ambrose bought us here with his own sort of teleportation. The adults were kind of ticked about that."
"The location of a safehouse is supposed to be a secret known only to members of the clan," Kasumi says. "It's one thing to bring an ally or someone under our protection here; it's quite another for them to drop in uninvited. And we did just get through a surprise attack."
"Which is why I kicked that pain-in-the-neck wizard in the shins before I yelled at the people who almost threw knives at me," Cordelia replies.
Oh, bother. What now?
