The camera of Alvin's phone turned on again, showing the ground and carpet of the Seville household with no one on the other side. The camera panned upward towards the nearby window that showed the backyard. It was pitch black out with a strong wind picking up, causing the branches that could be seen from the neighborhood street lights out in the distance to shake. The wind itself could even be partially heard from the slight opening to let air in. Next the camera moved over to see the darkened Chipette treehouse from the Miller backyard, zooming in to get a better look despite not a soul around or any movement being captured on the recording. Then the camera blurred in a swift jerk and spun to show Alvin shrieking at the camera. Alvin laughed to himself afterwards before giving the would-be audience one last audible 'boo', then arranged the phone back to normal facing the basement.
Unlike outside, the entrance to the basement was warm and welcoming with newly installed light fixtures turned on to guide visitors further down. The back of the basement door was covered with family photos from a time when the Chipmunks and Chipettes were younger as well as dated posters of their favorite musicians and movies. All of it surrounded a makeshift sign attached to the front that said "The Nerd Cave" written by a certain chipmunk in poor, sloppy handwriting. Alvin headed down the renovated stairs where he, before making himself known, caught a quick glimpse of his brother Simon typing away on his computer. His desk was separate from the workbench behind him, but the two pieces of furniture were pushed together close enough to where it resembled a typical lab, littered with pieces of computers and instruments designed for working on them at a microscopic level. Stepping off the final step, he quickly headed over with the camera in hand constantly facing Simon. Already aware of the boisterous chipmunk's presence, Simon stood up and faced him as he walked over to a nearby personal coffee maker.
"Man, talk about 'Munk' Supernatural HQ," Alvin joked from behind the camera as Simon poured himself a cup of coffee. He offered one to Alvin but he declined. "No thanks, I'm good. I got a can of 'Pow' energy with my name on it in the fridge."
"Those things will destroy your heart you know," Simon expressed.
"I'll take my chances. I'm here for a good time, not a long time baby!" Simon rolled his eyes as he looked at his brother, then accidentally to the camera as if by instinct.
"Why are you still recording?"
"Aw come on, who would want to miss out on a once in a lifetime discovery! We were famous before, but now we'll be in the history books!"
"Oh please," Simon scoffed. "Besides, there's nothing worth filming down here."
" Yet ," Alvin emphasized as he readjusted his hold on the camera to be more comfortable. "I'm not missing anything, not even for a second!"
"Alvin," Simon groaned.
"Think of it as… keeping a scientific log! Or something. You know, like in the movies. Or rather… a survival horror game !" Alvin couldn't help but add dramatic, albeit festive effect to that last part before chuckling to himself. Simon didn't realize it, but the camera recorded him growing a grin from Alvin's joke, before blowing on his coffee and gesturing for his brother to follow him to the desk. "So, what've we got 'professor'?"
"What," Simon asked, thrown off before getting himself back on track. "A-Anyway. I've been looking further into what Jeanette showed us this afternoon."
"I'm surprised she let you experiment on these things," Alvin teased as he zoomed in on the contents of Simon's desk, ranging from a magnifying glass to the pixie related objects they found and an old book open to withered and dried out pages.
"She was hesitant at first, but eventually she came around to the idea."
"And she didn't join you?" Simon blushed but then shook it off.
"She was here earlier helping me with the research, but then Brittany and Eleanor took her out for dinner since Miss Miller is heading out for another extended cruise."
"Boy, ever since she retired for real, she's wasted no time in reminding us, huh?"
"Tell me about it." Simon let out a held breath as he took a drink from his cup. "I've managed to find an explanation for everything… well, except for this." He lifted up a pair of tweezers that pinched and held the small wing they found earlier that afternoon. Alvin quickly made it the focus of the camera as Simon continued. "I looked over as many entomological references I could get access to but…"
"But?"
"Nothing." Simon rubbed his eyes and fixed his glasses. "So as it stands, there are two evident possibilities. The first being the more probable one, it simply being some kind of new species of dragonfly."
"It's a win-win," Alvin interrupted.
" Or … the other possibility. It's not… impossible that Jeanette may be right and that it's… something more… fantastic."
"Oh man I hope it's that one! Think of the fame we'd get! Who knows what else we could find too!"
"After my entomology research yielded no results, Jeanette brought in some of her books on folklore, the occult and even fantasy. Like this one." Simon closed up the old tome on his desk for Alvin to get a better look at it with his phone.
"Jeanette just has this laying around? This thing looks like it belongs in a museum! Or at least some kind of ritual in the woods."
"It's a loan apparently. Her friends on main street know other serious book collectors it seems. She was on the phone with them before she left asking for the favor."
"Girl's got connections now? Geez, remind me to never diss Shakespeare again."
"Not bad for a 'bookworm', huh," Simon smirked to the camera with a raised eyebrow.
"Yeah, yeah. Whatever," Alvin dismissed. "So what does the book say?"
"Well, it's a little light on the details," Simon said as he turned his chair back to the desk. "That's usually the case with these kinds of 'studies' if you can call them that. It does, however, enlighten the reader on some practices involving pixies. What we saw today to be exact. According to this, what we discovered was some kind of greeting ceremony."
"Not much of one if you ask me. More like they just trashed the place."
"Making contact with people is sacred to them based on what Jeanette told me and what I was able to confirm here. Sitting on specific mushrooms, receiving gifts, even leaving behind evidence of their presence is all a part of it."
"Hmm, adds up so far."
"Unfortunately, that's really it for what I could find in this book. That and this was one of several steps to the ceremony to build trust."
"So, what? We just have to wait and see for the next one?"
"Precisely."
"Not really much to go off of."
"I agree. But the book does at least reference other volumes in the set that could lead to more information regarding this ceremony. Jeanette asked about it today so we just need to wait for her friends to get us a copy before we can investigate further."
"Wait. So you're telling me there's more than ONE of these books? This one's like a thousand pages long!"
"Heh, it's actually just a travel guide according to the author. For researchers out in the field."
"Are you serious? When was this thing even made?" Before Simon answered, he snickered but as he opened his mouth, the camera suddenly went dark. It wasn't the phone itself as it automatically transitioned into night mode, capturing only vague glimpses of Simon's sudden panic in the darkness. Then the camera jolted and turned quickly around the room despite the poor vision. At first, it showed only nothing but Alvin and Simon's gasping. However, unbeknownst to them both, the microphone picked up faint sounds of scratching along the room's walls, quickly drowned out by the brother's erratic sounds as they tried to collect themselves. Then as quickly as the lights turned off they came back on, scaring them one more time. The phone captured a flurry of motion as it crashed to the ground, only able to record Alvin and Simon from an angle above it. Alvin leaned over to grab it as sounds of the computer's fans turning back on and the beeping of systems rebooting can be better heard from how low to them the phone had landed.
"Th-That-" Simon stuttered from the edge of the camera view. "Was strange. A black out at this time of year?"
"I thought your job was to make sure that didn't happen around here," Alvin mocked.
"I test the house's wiring every year. There shouldn't be any issue."
"What about those new solar panels? Dave paid a fortune to get those things put in."
"They only cover a portion of the house's power generation which really only feeds into the back up generator I installed. Besides, it's night time. It-It must have just been something on the electric company's end."
"Aw man," Alvin whined as he looked over his phone. "Twice now! Twice in the same week I bought this stupid thing!
"You should really get a case then."
