All Bell and Peter could smell was smoke as he got closer and closer to where an attack was taking place. Right now, things were moving slowly. The trap laid right before the two's eyes that they didn't see.
Landing in the middle of a fight, Bell froze while Peter jumped into action.
All around were dead bodies. Men and women who once clinged onto life were now dead. Either from a gunshot wound, a stab wound, or blunt force trauma, it didn't matter.
They were dead, non-moving, nor breathing. The bodies were all dressed in an assortment of gear with weapons laying all around them.
A pistol here, a knife there, oh god, was that a severed head. Bell could feel his dinner coming back up, but he had to focus.
Yet he remained still, frozen in shock. His heart was beating a mile a minute, and he could feel the blood rushing in his ears. He could feel the sweat on his brow as his breathing became quicker and quicker.
Sensing danger, his body subconsciously dodged a hail of bullets aimed at him. He shot a web and pulled himself to the top of the building where the gunmen were.
He shot another web and pulled the gun away from one before swinging it and hitting another man with it. His body moved him out of the way of a knife aimed at his abdomen.
Using an impact web, he stuck the man to a wall. Feeling something slam into the back of his head, Bell rolled with the blow before pushing himself up.
He saw another two men wielding pipes. The two charged at Bell, who dodged them thanks to his spider-sense. If it weren't for that, he'd already be dead, another causality of this gang war.
He delivered a punch to the first man's stomach before grabbing him by the collar and using him as a human shield. The other guy with the pipe, who was already mid-swing, hit his friend in the back.
Bell let go of the first man before delivering a punch to the second's face knocking him out. The first man was still conscious, so Bell webbed him to the roof so he couldn't run away.
His mind was still racing a mile a minute, not knowing the eyes of the prowler watching him. As she watched him, she thought to herself why her boss was so interested in the new one.
He wasn't much to look at, and she could tell the boy was scared. Yet she didn't get paid to ask these questions, so she got ready for when the separation of the two would happen.
Bell's spider-sense screamed at him to jump, and he did so by doing a backflip over a rocket shot from an RPG.
He shot webs on the RPG, pulling away from the woman holding it. He shot webs to her shoulder and pulled himself to her, his feet kicking her in the chest.
His momentum caused her back to slam into the ground, with Bell webbing her up so she couldn't run. Hearing the sound of gunfire and fighting stop, Bell let out a momentary sigh of relief.
He felt someone put a hand on his shoulder, causing him to spin around and crack his fist against Peter's jaw.
Peter grabbed his jaw, letting out a small groan of pain before looking at Bell. "Mean right hook, kid. You alright"
Bell tried to control his breathing a little so he could answer. "Y-y-yeah, I-I'm fine," he lied.
Peter didn't believe him, but he knew Bell was stubborn and wouldn't tell him no matter how much he asked.
"Alright, this area's cleared cops are on their way. Right now, we need to-
BOOM
Another explosion rang out a couple of blocks away. Bell and Peter immediately started swinging to the location and saw gangsters fighting the police.
Bell's breathing quickened again as he was going back into the bloodbath. More people dying caused more blood to flow, and the streets were starting to be stained red.
Bell and Peter landed on the ground. Both launched into action. This time Bell didn't freeze. He was lucky he had his spider-sense. Else one wrong move would mean he's dead.
Webbing up a sewer grate, Bell pulled and threw it at a thug hitting him in the face. He dodged another hail of bullets running on the wall as he did so.
He shot a web bomb at a group of five men, the bomb exploding and webbing them all up. He pushed himself off the wall avoiding another rocket.
Grabbing a tire from a blown-up police cruiser, he threw it at the rocket man before ducking over a machete.
Delivering a roundhouse kick to the woman's jaw, he knocked her out before back flipping away from a giant holding a sledgehammer.
The giant swung the sledgehammer again, to which Bell dodged, but a fist met his face as the giant had corralled Bell to that spot.
Bell stumbled to the ground as the man lifted his sledgehammer up once again. Bell rolled out of the way as the hammer impacted the ground, causing a small crater to be made.
Bell stuck his web to a propane tank and threw it at the giant. The giant swung his hammer like a bat and sent it right back at Bell.
Bell moved out of the way as an explosion went off right behind him. His hands shot up and caught the sledgehammer before it could make his head turn into paste.
He yanked the sledgehammer towards him head butting the man in the face causing him to let go of the sledgehammer hammer.
Bell swung it and broke the man's knee before webbing him up and beating him.
Before he could catch his breath, however, another explosion went off, causing Bell and Peter to run off to the other side of the district.
When they were halfway there, another explosion went off in the opposite direction of where they were heading. Both Bell and Peter stopped as they had to make a plan.
"Mayday, give me a report on the explosion that just went off," Peter ordered.
"A small abandoned warehouse used as arms smuggling. A police helicopter crashed just outside," Mayday responded.
"And the one that went off a minute ago," Peter asked.
"A loading dock in a high population area with multiple police and gangster forces fighting for control," Mayday responded.
Peter looked to Bell, putting his hands on his shoulders. "Alright, kid, I need you to head to the crashed helicopter. Can you do that for me"
Bell felt fear coursing through his body. He'd be alone on the other side of the district, away from Peter and anyone that could help them.
But there might be survivors from the crash, and what if it was someone he knew from the police department in that helicopter? What if it was Alise or his dad? He couldn't let anyone that needed help be left to rot, even if he himself was terrified.
Bell gulped as he shakily nodded his head. "I-I'll go."
Peter patted his back as he let go. "Just remember your training, and you'll be fine. If you need help, double-tap the crest of your suit, and it'll send me a distress beacon. Once I finish up here, I'll come running."
Peter and Bell then went their separate ways. Peter headed to the docks while Bell headed to the warehouse.
As Bell swung to the docks, he noticed how eerily quiet it had gotten. Like all the fighting, this way had stopped.
But what had caused the helicopter to go down?
All of a sudden, all the lights around Bell went out. Bell landed on a roof and looked out on the entire district seeing it dark.
Just what the hell happened?
"Mayday are you there" Bell called.
"I'm here, Bell. How can I help you" Mayday responded, yet she sounded farther away?
"Mayday, what happened" Bell inquired as he turned the night vision on in his suit.
"It appears an electromagnetic pulse has been triggered in this district. All power and radios have been cut off," Mayday replied, her voice sounding farther away.
"What about you," Bell asked, a hint of worry in his voice.
"I was able to withstand it for a moment. My systems are shutting down as my servers in this district are fried. You're on your own, Bell" Mayday's voice then cut out, leaving Bell alone.
He had no way to call Peter on anyone, for that matter, for help if he needed it. Bell then looked in the direction of the warehouse. He was close, as thanks to his night vision, he could see the smoke rising.
Thankfully Peter made his suit EMP proof which made sure Bell's suit didn't disappear.
Right now, Bell had a decision to make. He could go back and help Peter at the docks, yet he would leave the people in the helicopter to their fate. What if his dad or Alise were in that helicopter?
Or he could continue on his mission with no way to reach anyone should he need help. His choices laid out in front of him. Bell knew what he would have to do.
"Well, nothing says heroic and stupid like going into danger with no way to call for help," he said to himself, trying to keep himself calm.
He took off running once again as he jumped off the roof and began swinging to the rising cloud of smoke.
He landed in front of the downed helicopter seeing the pilot lying facedown on the ground, unmoving. Bell crouched down next to the man and put his fingers in his neck, checking for a pulse.
He breathed a sigh of relief as he felt one. Bell then noticed that there were signs of a struggle leading into the warehouse. Almost as if someone was dragged inside.
Swallowing the lump in his throat, he could feel a dangerous presence coming from the darkened warehouse.
Taking a step inside, he could see support pillars that looked sturdy and made from concrete and rebar. The concrete floor looked trashy and dusty but still held up. He could see multiple panes of glass providing the building with some light from the moon.
Taking more steps inside, he moved closer and closer to the middle. He could see two figures standing there, one standing up and the other on their knees.
The one standing up was massive, standing at least seven feet tall, if not taller. They were standing there almost as if they were expecting him to show up.
When he was finally able to see the two, his eyes widened in shock as he saw Alise down on her knees, her hands handcuffed behind her back as her head was bleeding a little.
"So nice of you to finally join us Spider-Man. I have been waiting for your arrival," the tall man said. He wore a black three-piece suit with a white undershirt and black pants.
Peter's words of comedy to help with a bad situation flashed through Bell's mind. He had to remain calm and make sure Alise wasn't scared. Although he didn't take her for the fearful type, but it wouldn't hurt to put Peter's words into practice.
"If I had known you were expecting me, I would've worn something nicer," Bell quipped.
Alise looked up at Bell since he didn't have his voice modifier on. She felt like she had heard this voice before but couldn't remember where.
"Hmm, I see the other spider has passed on his quips to you. No matter, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Ottar. But you may call me kingpin," Ottar introduced himself.
Bell quirked an eyebrow under his mask. "Why tell me your name if a cop is right next to you."
Ottar grabbed Alise by her arm and lifted her up to where she was standing. "Because whether or not she lives is entirely on you. I also intend to disappear after this as well."
Bell felt his palms getting clammy as his right hand opened and closed, showing nervousness. "So what was the point of all this death then."
"Why, that's simple. So I can control everything in this district. But enough about my plans, it's time you make a decision," Ottar stated as his grip around Alise tightened.
Bell was about to launch himself, but Ottar put a gun to Alise's head, causing him to stop.
"You see, I like to fight strong opponents. I like to fight people that will get my blood pumping. Since you are going to be the next Spider-Man, I wish to see your prowess and see if you deserve the title. But I also like to know the identity of my opponents. I even know Spider-Man's identity," Ottar explained.
Bell's eyes widened in shock. He knew Peter was Spider-Man. "If you know who Spider-Man is, why not take him out or his loved ones to send a message," Bell asked.
Ottar had an annoyed look on his face at the question. "Because that is a dishonorable way to fight. But now you have a choice. You can either show me your identity. In return, I will allow this cop, who you seem close with, to leave this place before we fight. Or you can keep your identity secret, and we still fight with her in the crossfire. Your choice"
Alise looked at Bell and shook her head. "Don't worry about me Spider-Man. Take this guy down. I'll be fine."
Bell looked at her face and saw not a single hint of fear. But he couldn't let her die. He couldn't let someone so important to him or his father die.
Bell's instincts were screaming at him. "Save her, save her," they yelled.
Taking a deep breath...Bell dematerialized his mask, revealing his identity to both Ottar and Alise. His face was sweaty, and his eyes bloodshot as he hadn't blinked much during the fighting. The two looked at Bell, shocked for two different reasons.
"You're, you're just a kid," Ottar said in surprise with a hint of sadness in his voice.
"Bell? No, it can't be. Why did it have to be you" Alise said as Ottar let her go. She quickly walked to Bell, who grabbed her.
"No,no,no,no,no. Why is it you? Why aren't you somewhere safe away from all of this" Alise said as tears were threading to spill from her eyes.
Why couldn't it have been anyone other than Bell? Bell, the sweet and kind kid she babysat when his parents weren't home. The kid who said he'd marry her when he grew up. The kid who she had watched turn from a crybaby of a kid to a smart and brave kid who right now was giving up his secret to protect her.
"Alise," Bell called out to her. She looked at his bloodshot eyes as he broke her handcuffs with his bare hands. "You're going to go to the helicopter pilot outside and get him somewhere safe. I'll buy you some time."
"But Bell, you're just a child. I can't leave you here. He'll tear you apart," Alise protested.
"Alise," Bell called out once again, his voice more firm. "If you care for me the way I know you do. You'll do as I say and get yourself to safety."
His voice was calm yet firm as he ordered her. He didn't want Alise to see him sacred, even if he was terrified. If this was his last night on earth, he didn't want her last memory of him to be a crying child.
"You're so unfair," Alise told him, her voice shaky and uneven.
"I know. Now get going, Alise," Bell ordered once again. He wanted her to be gone. To be safe so she wouldn't die. Bell wouldn't know how to live with himself if he let her die.
So with heavy steps, Alise began her walk out of the warehouse. She grabbed the pilot and began to carry him away from here and somewhere safe.
Bell and Ottar stared at each other. Ottar unloaded the gun and threw it on the ground as he took off his suit jacket and rolled up his sleeves.
"I am sorry it came to this child. However, I do commend you for your bravery as a warrior despite being so young. For that, you have earned my respect. Now child, shall we do battle" Ottar said.
Bell materialized his mask over his face again. "Let's," Bell replied.
The two then charged at each other. Their fight had already started.
Well, I'm gonna end this here. I hope you enjoyed what happened as the gang war isn't over yet, as we still have Bell's fight with Ottar and Peter's side of things.
Anyway, I'm gonna be starting another story soon. I know a third one to write as well, man. Aren't I a busy bee?
Well, I hope you enjoyed and I'll see you next chapter.
