Chapter 25: That's All It Is, Perseus. A Leap of Faith.
Okay… it looks like Ferdinand the talking bull is okay… somehow. After Percy and I defeated him, I told Percy to bring the Minotaur back up.
"Are you crazy?!" He replied. "He's going to attack us again!"
"He should be bound by those chains, plus I'll just web him up like I did with Vulture."
"I'm sorry, you let Vulture LIVE?!" He yelled.
I pointed toward her webbed up on a crate that's hanging by a crane.
"What? It's not like she's going anywhere," I assured Percy.
Afterwards, Percy brought the Minotaur back to the surface and he was still bound by the chains getting tangled by the crate. But, just to be safe, I added some more webs to him so that he doesn't escape.
"That'll keep him from going on another rampage for a while."
The Minotaur growls in anger. Percy, on the other hand, was not convinced.
"He shouldn't be alive, Estelle. He must be dealt with, now."
Percy raised his sword and was about to finish off the monster, but I stopped him by shooting a web at his sword and yanking it away from him.
"Slow down there, cowboy. He's unarmed and tied up."
"He's a monster, Estelle! He'll just go and hurt someone else. He can't be allowed to live."
I sigh, "Percy, I know how much the Minotaur hurt you in the past. I know what you've been through. But, killing him when he's already beaten; we'd be no better than him."
Percy didn't want to admit it, but I'm right.
"I just… I just can't go through that again! After what happened-"
"I know, Percy," I said. "I know. I saw it in my dreams."
Percy's eyes widened.
"Wait, you told me that you never dreamed before."
"Uh… I kind of started to dream after I got bitten."
Percy cursed.
"That's it! We're getting that curse off you, now!"
"Percy wait-!"
"No! This can not wait!"
"It's going to have to, Seaweed Brain!" Annabeth yelled as she was holding Hazel to support her. "In case you haven't forgotten, Typhon has already begun his plan and is on his way to face the gods with his secret weapon."
"But-"
"Later!" Annabeth commanded. "Right now, we need to destroy the ritual circle and-"
"Already taken care of that one," I interrupted. "But there's still four more surrounding The Empire State Building."
I searched into my pockets and picked out my phone. Or rather, a brand new phone suitable to demigods. Leo calls it a DemiPhone. Yeah… he's not great at naming things. Anyways, I opened up the map app and the phone bursted out green smoke which started to form a holographic map of Manhattan. Several red marks appeared on the map.
"The ritual contains five circles and only needs one to continue working. If you guys split up, we can disrupt the ritual and the barrier will return."
"Hang on, since when did you-"
"Leo and Calypso helped me plan ahead while I was training. I got us into this mess so I'm getting us out."
Annabeth was impressed. Percy, on the other hand, was not. Before he could even speak his thoughts out, my phone rang. It was Leo so I opened the call and put it on speaker.
"Leo? What's wrong?" I asked.
"Hey Estelle, bad news. Typhon managed to get past guards and me. Even with Festus and I, we weren't able to get past that magic of his."
"Wait, then the gods on their own?" Frank said.
"Oh, hey guys! Estelle saved y'all asses already?"
Annabeth rolled her eyes. "Leo, focus. Are the gods okay?"
"For now… but there's no way they'll stand a chance against Typhon's secret weapon."
Annabeth sighs and tells Leo to hold off the monsters until reinforcement arrives. "I was afraid of this. Estelle?"
"Yeah?" I replied after ending the call.
"Be honest with me. How much training did you do in Leo's workshop?"
"Wise Girl! You can't be serious!" Percy yelled.
"I have been training for the past six days. Mostly fighting you guys along with Jason, Leo and Piper."
"Wait, at the same time?!" Frank asked. "Fighting Annabeth alone is a suicide mission. How-"
"Thank you, Frank!" Annabeth interrupted and gestured at me. "Continue."
"Well, I had trouble but on the sixth day, I managed to beat all of you… barely."
"Just once?!" Percy yelled. "That's still not enough!"
"But it'll have to do, Seaweed Brain! Face it, none of us stands a chance against Typhon and his secret weapon. All we can do is-"
"NO!" Percy yelled. "I will not have my little sister fight OUR fight, Annabeth!"
Everyone was silent, even Annabeth. Percy rarely raises his voice, especially on Annabeth. If anything, she would be the one yelling for something stupid he did. "I… promised mom that I'd protect her. I know the situation is bad but… I just can't, Annabeth. I can't let my little sister go through the hell we've been through. I can't let Estelle watch her friends die in front of her. I can't let her lose a part of herself after every battle. I… I just can't let her suffer like… like us."
No one said a word, we just listened to Percy's concern and worries. I get what he's talking about. In my dreams, I saw all of Percy's adventures and battles. I saw how much he gained and lost after each experience. Sure, he's the hero of Olympus; one of the strongest demigods and living a happy family life. But, he lost so many good people in the process, nearly died several times and broke several promises to those dear to him. He even had to do trials just to go to college. And now, his half-sister, who's also a mortal, is heading to Olympus to fight a weakened but powerful god who literally leads an army of monsters.
I sigh and proceed to take my mask off.
"Perseus, look at me," I said.
Percy turns around and faces me. Like I said, No one ever uses Percy's full name unless it's something very serious to discuss. And right now, this is important. He needs to hear what I have to say.
"Percy, I get what you're saying. In my dreams, I saw nearly everything you went through. From you watching mom killed from the Minotaur to you trying to go to college. I saw the many struggles you've been through. All the battles you fought; all the trials you faced and… all the friends you lost…"
I grabbed his right hand and placed it between both of mine.
"All your life, you have been protecting the one thing you fear to lose. The one thing that you constantly fight for… to live for. Your family," I look behind him and stare at the others.
Camp Half-Blood wasn't just a camp or a training ground for Percy. It's his second home. All the people he met, they understood him better than the mortal world.
"But Percy, this isn't your fight anymore. It's mine. I got us into this mess; if I had just stayed in camp, Typhon would have never captured you and proceed with his plans. That's why I have to do this. I need to make it right."
Percy's hand grip into mine as he replied, shuttering, "I just… I just want to protect you. This life… this world… you don't deserve this. You deserve to be happy; to be free; to live a life by your choices."
I smiled and scoffed, "Percy… you guys ARE my life. You all have been there for me for as long as I can remember. All of you guys… you're my heroes. That's why… I have to do this. Even heroes need saving too."
BOOM
We all turned around and saw lightning striking on top of the Empire State Building.
"That's Zeus!" Annabeth yelled. "He and the others are in trouble!"
I faced Percy, "Please, let me go. I'm the only one who can do this."
Percy was contemplating, but Annabeth came to his side. He looks at her for reassurance. After a moment of pondering, Percy replied, "Entrance won't allow mortals to Olympus. You'll need to find another way in."
I smirked, "I have an idea. Don't you worry."
Annabeth spoke, "We'll go take out the other ritual circles and restore the barrier. You go up there and find a way to take out Typhon's magic. Once he loses that, he won't stand a chance against the gods."
I nodded.
"Okay, be careful you guys."
Frank and Hazel nodded and wished me luck; Annabeth hugged me and Percy told me an old family saying.
"...Hold fast, Estelle. And show the gods what we Jacksons can do."
I smiled and hugged him tightly.
I let go and put my mask back on and swung upward towards Olympus. As I turn back, I see my brother facing me. He looks at me as I swing away. He seems to have a sad look on his face; as if the little girl he always watched over is all grown up and facing terrors she's not supposed to.
Maybe I am… but it's my choice.
Meanwhile, the battle that is taking place in Olympus is taking a harsh turn for the worse. The monsters have already made it past the gates and are giving the guards a hard time. However, a few managed to slip past them and enter the city. And the one leading this small group was none other than our deadly drug dealing manticore, Scorpion.
"Alright boys! Let's find that room and do our job!" He yelled. The monsters roar in agreement as they just about disperse. However, they stopped as a burning corpse flew in front of them.
They all looked ahead and spotted none other than Leo Valdez himself.
"I was wondering where you guys went!" He yelled.
Scorpion laughed. "Look at this muchachos! The little mechanic wants to face us! What, are you going to let your little robot lizard fight your battles?!"
Leo scoffed, "Festus? Nah, he's busy dealing with your friends. Shame though, you could have gotten a merciful death."
"Oh? What are you going to do? Build a jailhouse for us? In case you forgot, you're outnumbered by 50 to 1. And even your flames won't stand a chance against us."
Leo shrugged, "You're right on all that. In terms of physique and combat, I'm probably the weakest."
Suddenly, a beeping noise came to Leo's ear.
"[Sir, the suit is ready. However, I must advise that it is not yet been tested.]"
"Consider this a field test, T.A.L.O.S.," Leo responded quietly.
"Just do us all a favor and STAY DEAD!" Scorpion yelled as he fired off a large amount of his poisonous acid at Leo. However… It never made contact with him. Rather, it was blocked by some magical barrier.
"However," Leo continued. "I'm no fighter, but I am a mechanic. And a damn good one at that."
Scorpion grunted angrily and ordered two of his monsters to charge at Leo.
"I can fix things easily. From broken cars to broken hearts," Leo said, smirking. Obviously he was referring to his wife, Calypso. "But I can also build things such as tools, vehicles, weapons…"
Before he can continue, a monster jumps at him from the side. However, Leo reacted quickly and placed a hand in front of the beast. Suddenly, a large laser blast was fired and incinerated the monster into dust.
"...And of course, a suit of armor."
Leo smirked as everyone realized that Leo's hand became a gauntlet, then it started morphing and began covering Leo's entire arm and later his body. Finally, the suit reached his neck and morphed an entire helmet on him. It was shaped into a mix of a Spartan helmet and Iron Man.
The monsters were shocked at the sudden appearance.
"It's a work in progress, but this suit was designed to be powered by my flames. Enhancing it so I can fire them off like an energy blast. So I may be a mechanic. But with this suit… I'm more. I'm…"
The second monster jumps from behind, but Leo reacts quickly and grabs him by the neck and slams him to the ground.
"...Invincible."
Author's Note:
YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW BADLY I WANTED TO WRITE BOTH THESE SCENES! After planning this story, I thought to myself, "What if Estelle wasn't the only superhero in the making?" I mean… I did do a little teaser in the last chapter. If you're Marvel's fan, you'd know what it was. Anyways, I hope you enjoyed this chapter. Until the next update.
