"Ugh" Lara glanced at her blood soaked body in displeasure after swimming out of the blood stained pool.
"It stinks. I wonder if it's human blood"
Naruto looked back at the blood stained pool before shaking his head.
"I don't even want to think about it. Let's just go find Sam"
"Right"
"By the way, here" Naruto handed Lara her bow. It he had managed to retrieve from the scavenger prior to their escape. He however was completely defenseless as the scavenger took away all of his weapons
"Thanks" Lara nodded although she felt a little sad that he hadn't managed to retrieve her quiver.
"Don't mention it."
"Have you tried calling Roth" Lara asked but Naruto shook his head before raising his soaked radio.
"Mine is damaged" He replied before tossing it away.
Lara hurriedly took out her own radio to check it but unlike Naruto's own her own wasn't damaged however there was no signal.
"It's not getting through" Lara sighed dejectedly.
"I guess we are on our own again"
"I guess. Let's hope we find the others before it's too late.
"Hm"
After settling their belongings the two of them made their way through the creepy cavern entrance with stalagmites lining both sides.
squeak squeak.
"Wait" Lara shouted before running off leaving s confused Naruto behind.
"Huh"
Naruto watched as Lara hurried to a corner of the cave. A few seconds later she returned with three arrows clutched tightly in her right hand.
"I'm gonna need this"
Although Naruto wanted to ask how she had seen the arrow in the first place he eventually settled for a nod.
"let's just keep moving"
"Okay"
They continued carefully through the blood soaked cave floor as they didn't know what to expect.
The rats running around the cave however creeped Lara out.
Naruto took the lead with Lara behind him as they move through the cave. Naruto suddenly went on a coughing fit as they approached a green gaseous substance in the cave.
"Naruto are you okay?!" Lara was about to rush to his side but he stopped her with a raised hand.
"Don't *cough* breathe the *cough* gas in Lara*cough*" Naruto said after covering his mouth with his shirt before walking through the gas.
Lara also followed his lead and moved through the gas with her face covered. Behind the gas was a spacious space with a narrow opening on the other side, enough to fit a person.
They passed through the narrow passage which leads into another large space.
Lara turned to Naruto and was about to say something when they suddenly heard a voice coming from below them.
"Wait wait...what do you want me to do?"
Naruto and Lara peeked out from above through some broken metal bars where they saw a gate opened up. A scavenger pushed a man out of the open door and onto the ground littered with pieces of skeleton.
"Don't struggle too much. And hope that they kill you fast" The scavenger replied with an eerie look on his face before shutting the gate.
"What the hell is going on?"Lara turned to Naruto with a confused look on her face.
"I don't know" Naruto shook his head but they didn't have to wait long as a group of skinny people rushed towards the man from another part of the cave.
"Meat!"
"Meat!"
"Stay away from me!" The man's face morphed into one of horror and fear as the beings continued towards him menacingly.
"I want meat!"
"No! no! no!... oh God! argh!"
"Oh no"
"Wha--"
Naruto's expression morphed into one of horror at the scene taking place in front of them. The group rushed the man and started to tear him apart like a pack of hungry wolves. He could barely watch as they feasted on the man alive.
His pain filled scream echoed around the cave. The group of inhumane laughed manically while enjoying their meal.
"Aurgh"
Naruto turned to his left to see Lara emptying the content of her stomachs on the ground.
"Are you okay?"
"I..I'm fine" Lara replied with a flushed face after managing to gather her bearing. Though the horror of what she had saw still lingered in her heart.
"Wh...what were those things?"
"I don't know. But they are definitely no longer human"
"Urgh. I can't get it out of my head."
"Me neither " Naruto nodded stiffly before turning to look at the tattered remains of the man. It took all his will just to prevent himself from puking at the sight. He may have killed a lot of people but this was his first time seeing someone being eaten alive.
After clearing his mind he turned to face the gate that the scavenger had leave through.
"But that door seems to be our only ticket out of here"
They observed the inhumane from behind a few metal containers that was laying around the cave. After having their feel the inhumane ran back to the part of the cave they came from.
Lara looked at the door before swallowing her displeasure at having to confront such inhumane beings and silently prayed that they wouldn't come back.
"Okay. Let's hurry"
Naruto led Lara down a path leading to the cave ground where the dead man was.
Lara looked from the dead body to the door not far away from them before walking up to Naruto who stood before the gate's door.
Naruto tried to pry open the door with his hands but that proved to be futile. Lara also tried with her pry axe but it didn't move an inch.
'Shit'
After trying for a while Naruto finally caught sight of a gas regulator leaking gas not far from the gate and quickly got an idea.
The gas should be flammable right?
"Lara help me with this"
"Huh?"
Lara who was still trying to pry open the door turned around to see Naruto struggling to turn the handle of the gas regulator.
Lara's eyes lit up as she quickly understood what Naruto was planning to do. She hurried to his side and tried to help him to turn the handle with her pry axe.
"Hey!"
Two heads turned as one to see a thrall standing at the far end of the cave looking at them with a hungry look.
'Oh shit'
Lara quickly nock one of her arrows onto the bow and took aim.
"Guys there are more meats he--"
The arrow pierced into the thrall's head killing it immediately but it was already too late.
"Did you hear that?"
"I heard meat!"
"Meat!"
"Let's check it out"
'Shit'
Not long after they heard more voices coming from around the corner giving them a sending urgency.
Hurry! Hurry!!
Naruto and Lara continued to pry open the gas handle vigorously.
'Cone on. Come on'

After what felt like hours the handle finally tore off the gas regulator releasing more of the gaseous substance.
And not a moment too soon did three more thralls appeared from behind the same corner as the first one wearing the same crazy looks on their faces.
"There they are!"
"There's two of them!"
"Get them!"
Lara seeing those two thralls hurriedly approaching them didn't dare to waste anymore time.
"Move!"
Naruto quickly ran out of way as Lara lit the arrow head on fire and took aim at the gas after putting some distance between her and the gas.
Thank God that Naruto had managed to retrieve her bow back from the scavenger if not she wouldn't have been able to create a flaming arrow so quickly.
She shot the fire arrow at the gas resulting in a small explosion that rocked the cave and shattered the gate completely. The shockwave from the explosion knocked Lara off her feet.
The explosion scared off the thralls who were more fearful of dying than feasting.
Naruto however ran towards Lara from behind the stalagmites he hid behind after the explosion settled.
"Lara are you okay?"
"Yeah...I'm fine. Just a slight headache" She shook her head lightly
Thankfully she had put enough distance between herself and the gas if not she would have had more than just an headache to worry about.
"Alright. Come on"
Naruto helped her back to her feet and the two of them quickly passed through the destroyed gate.
The gate led into another part of the cave that looked more like a catacomb with a stalagmite in the middle connecting with the stalactite on the roof of the cave. A light bulb on the ceiling and a searchlight at the other end were the only source of light in the cave.
Lara was about to continue forward when Naruto hurriedly pulled her behind a stalagmite in a corner of the cave to hide. She was about to question his action when she suddenly heard footsteps approaching from the other side of the cave.
"goddamn these caves... I'm surprised this whole place hasn't gone up yet" A man complained as he glared at the rats running around the cave. His displeasure evident in his voice. His partner however was thinking about something else.
"I might have to cap that vent in the pit again"
"If it's loose, let's just leave it for the next shift"
"Hey don't take too long down there, I want to finish this game" An eager voice shouted out from the area they came from. However the two were not happy about the reminder since they were losing but one of them begrudgingly replied.
"Got it"
"What a piece of shit" The other whispered before they continued scouting the area.
Naruto and Lara watched as the two Solarii Brothers walked pass their hiding spot with vigilant eyes.
They unconsciously tightened their grips on their weapons.
Seeing that they had not been discovered, Naruto picked up a rock from the ground and tossed it to the other end of the cave to draw their attention.

They moved cautiously towards the direction the sound came from turning their defenseless back towards the deadly predators lying in wait.

Lara's eyes sharpened as she quickly took aim and shot one of the scavengers in the back of the head sending him to oblivion.
Thud.
"Huh"
The other scavenger who in front turned around when he heard something hit the ground behind him only to see the dead body of his partner lying on the cave cold floor with an arrow sticking out of the back of his head.
"What the hell?
He quickly took out his gun and turned around to aim in a certain direction. Based on the trajectory of the arrow, it was definitely shot from that direction.
"Who's there?"
However silence was what greeted him. From an outsider point of view it felt more like he was talking to himself than anything else. He was about to advance forward when he heard a sharp sound coming from behind him.
Swoosh.
He turned around only to see a bright light flash before an object cut cleanly through his throat.
His eyes widened in shock and he tried to say something as he choked on his own blood but all he could do was stare helplessly at the villain that had taken his life.
Naruto watched emotionlessly as the man in front of him slumped to the ground motionless.
"Well that was brutal" Lara sighed when she saw the sharp piece of rock in Naruto's hand still dripping with fresh blood.
"Not my intention" Naruto sighed sadly.
"What the hell is going on down there?!" A scavenger walked out from a part of the cave where the two scavengers had previously came from. He pointed his flashlight down into the catacomb where he saw two figures one male and the female.
But that wasn't what left him speechless. It was the two dead bodies of his friends lying motionless on the ground that enraged him.
His anger immediately soar.
"Intruders in the catacombs"
The scavenger shouted before grabbing his gun and opened fire on them.
"Oh shit. Take cover!" Naruto quickly picked up the scavenger guns on the ground before scrambling for cover with Lara.
Three more brotherhood members came to support him.
Bullets rained down on them like rain drops creating a loud deafening noise on the catacombs.
Naruto and Lara returned fire with the machine guns they had savaged from the scavengers corpse.
After a while the sound of gunfire slowly died down.
The battle didn't last long before all of them were taken down since there were hardly any place to take cover, the scavengers had disregarded their defense and tried to take them down with pure numbers.
This made it easier for Naruto and Lara to take them down.
After the battle ended they savaged whatever they could from the dead bodies.
Such as bullets and arrows or in Naruto's case an axe.
"Let's keep moving"
They continued up the path the scavengers came from to see a locked metal gate with a small stalagmite by it side where the gaseous substance was currently leaking out from.
Lara readied her arrow ready to set the gas ablaze since this wasn't her first time doing it but Naruto stopped her.
"No"
"Why?" Lara raised an eyebrow quizzically.
"The quantity of the gas is too small. I don't think it would be able to take down the date. There should be another regulator around here, I'll check it out." Naruto said before turning to his right where there was a stone staircase with a big metal box cage at it top.
"Wait here" Naruto quickly turned around not giving Lara a chance to say anything before jogging towards the stairs.
Lara watched him ascend before finding a spot to sit down but when she did she felt something under her butt.
She reached for it and what she pulled out was a piece of paper or more specifically a letter. She was about to toss it aware when a noticed the familiar handwriting on the paper.
"This is Reyes handwriting. How did this get here?" Feeling her curiosity grow she opened the letter and started reading it content.
After reading through the contents of the letter she found out one particularly shocking information.
"Roth and Reyes have a daughter?"
Boom.
A loud noise snapped her out of her thoughts. Lara turned to the small rock fountain by the side with the gas which was now gushing out more gas than before.
Hearing the sounds of footsteps she turned to her right where she saw Naruto running towards her while shielding his face from the gas.
"Naruto?"
"You can shoot the gas now, Lara"
"Hm"
Lara pocket the letter before retrieving her bow and arrow. She distanced her this time more than before to avoid the previous incident from repeating itself and with practice ease she shot a fire arrow at the gas which caused a loud explosion that shook the entire catacombs.
"Look out!" Naruto tackled Lara out of the way of a falling cage.
The earthquake caused by the explosion caused the metal cage at the top to fall come crashing down beside the metal cage but other than that there was no other damage.
"Ouch" Lara groaned in pain. Her whole body stings from hitting the rough ground. Lara turned to look at the gate and could only stare in disbelief when she saw the metal gate still standing.
"Well that was a bummer"
"Not entirely" Naruto smirked as he pointed at the wide-open space at the top of the gate.
Lara only noticed it now after he pointed it out.
Truthfully Naruto hadn't noticed the gap before when they first entered this area. It was only after he climbed to the top of the stairs that he noticed it
"Then what are we waiting for?"
Lara quickly climbed up the metal box and then climbed up the edge of the gate into the space above it.
Naruto watched lara as she hurriedly climbed into the space above the cage but he couldn't blame her for being in a rush.
After a few seconds Naruto also climbed after her.
Immediately he got to the top he saw lara hiding behind a metal cage. He raised an eyebrow and was about to question her when she suddenly turned to him and signalled for him to be quiet.
Shush.
Naruto seeing the serious expression on her face nodded before silently making his way over to her. He looked down from the edge to see two scavengers patrolling below.
"I completely forgot about the smell"
"Man I just wanna get out of here. I can't wait for the next shift to take over"
"Yeah"
Lara silently watched the two of them turn a corner before she whispered to Naruto.
"Let's go"

They ran across the platform as quietly as possible avoiding the scavengers scouting below. They jumped a gap to the other side but the light from the searchlights below reflected their shadows giving away their position.
"Hey what was that?" One of the scavengers below questioned when a shadow suddenly passed over him.
"Up there!" The other person with him also noticed this and quickly found two people moving on the platforms above them.
"Fuck!"
"Intruders!"
Oh oh
"Die!"
"Look out!" Lara pushed Naruto out of the way of an knife.
"Where are the intruders? !"
Three more scavengers ran out from the door below them. The three of them being melee fighters. One axe wielder with the other two using double pry axe.
"Don't let them escape"
The scavengers rushed to climb the metal cage below to reach them but Naruto and Lara didn't give them the chance to and quickly dealt with the three of them using their guns.
Bang bang bang ...
The only ones that proved difficult was the other two scavengers from before because they both had machine guns.
And just like before they engaged in a gun fight again with the scavengers.
It took a while but they were also dealt with.
"This should come in handy" Naruto picked up the double pry axe he savaged from the dead scavengers body.
"Here" Lara tossed an ammo at him which he caught.
"They only had one on their person"
"I guess even they are running low on ammo."
"Make sense since there are no gun factories on this island"
Naruto nodded but it was then he noticed the double pry axe in Lara's belt. One of them being the pry axe Roth gave her so the other must have been from the dead scavenger.
Lara noticed his quizzical gaze so she answered his unsaid question.
"What? It was hard using one pry axe. And what about you?" She asked after taking noticing the pair of pry axe in his belt as well.
"I'm improvising. You don't expect me to climb with my bare hands, do you?"
"Oh"
Now that she thought about it, He always used his throwing knives to climb but those had been taken away by the scavengers when they had been captured.
'Make sense' She felt embarrassed for asking such a silly question but Naruto could care less.
"Come on. We have no time to waste"
"Hold on" Naruto stopped Lara before she could take a step confusing her.
"What is it?"
"Did you hear that?"
Squeak squeak
"Huh. Hear what? The rat?"
"No...That" Naruto ears picked up a sound but it was more like a faint whisper. After focusing all his attentions on the sound he finally pin point the location.
"It's coming from up there"
Naruto pointed to the very top where there was a large space directly above where they had been before.
"Are you sure?" Lara looked uncertain since all they could hear was the rats moving around the cave.
Although she didn't want to doubt him, time is of essence now. They can't afford to waste anymore time.
More over they have come too far for her to be doubting him now. With that thought she turned tp Naruto and said resolutely.
"Okay. Lead the way"
"Hm"
Naruto wasted no time in climbing back up and with the two pry axe now in his hands it made climbing much more easier.
Though with each sound the pry axe made his chest tightened. He was afraid of the sound alerting whoever or whatever was up there.
'I hope the sound from the gunshots from before went unheard too.'
A few seconds later they made to the top. It was when they got to this point they Lara finally heard the faint voice Naruto was talking about.
"Don't make a sound"
Naruto whispered earning him a nod from Lara before they began to make through the obstacles Not long after they stumbled upon another area just as Naruto had said.
Now the voice could be heard more clearly.
"Oh great sun queen. These new servants submit themselves before you."
Naruto motioned for Lara to slow down when he saw a scavenger standing a few feet from them. Naruto pulled out the axe from his belt but was shocked when an arrow zoomed pass his head to hit the scavenger in the neck.
Naruto turned to look at Lara in fright. Lara however raised an eyebrow when he saw his look.
"What?" She asked with an innocent face completely ignorant of the deadly stunt that she had just pulled.
What the fuck was that?! Are you trying to kill me?!
Was what he wanted to say but he ended up with a sigh and eventually settled for..
"Nothing"
"If you say so" She shrugged lightly not dwelling on it. Naruto noticed this and decided to ignore the matter since it wasn't done with any bad intention in mind.
They moved closer to where the scavenger had been standing guard. Lara retrieved her arrow from the dead scavenger's body and placed it back in her belt after wiping it clean since she still haven't managed to find a quiver. Currently she only had five arrows on her person which wasn't enough.
She turned back around to peek out from behind wooden framework the scavenger had been standing guard to see four scavengers scattered around with a scavenger standing in the middle of the cave reciting some words of worship for the sun queen.
"What now?" Lara asked after moving closer to Naruto.
"There are at least five enemies around. One in the middle, two to the left and the last two at the other end of this cave. So the plan is to take them out as fast as possible. Which tour arrow you can take out the two at the far end without alerting the others. I'll handle the ones closest to the us"
"Okay. Leave it to me" Lara nodded seriously before retrieving her bow and arrow.
After arranging the plan Naruto quietly snuck up to the two close to them while Lara quickly disposed of the two at the far end of the cave.
The light sound of their bodies hitting the ground attracted the attention of the others. The one on the left was about to move when an axe hit him in the forehead. His dead body fell listlessly to the ground with his forehead gushing out blood like a fountain.
The scavenger next to him was startled by the bloody scene. His whole body shivered when some of the blood got onto his face. His mind was in turmoil. Unlike the others he had never killed before. He was just a new recruit and was just being initiated into the cult, so he had never seen such a gruesome scene before.
Too bad for him that he was already neck too deep to be allowed to back out now.
Tap tap tap tap...
He heard footsteps making their way towards him but by the time he turned around it was already too late. The same axe that had killed his friend slashed open his throat gushing out blood.
He grabbed at his throat a few times with an horrified look before falling to the ground like a sack of potato. As he laid dying in a pool of his own blood he remembered the face of the blonde headed man who had ruthlessly ended his existence before falling into an eternal rest.
After dealing with all the scavengers in the room the two of them spent some time searching around before finally finding a way out of the cave which took them a lot of time. This time their abilities were tested to the limit.
Naruto got fed up at some point and eventually thought that there was no way out of there. It was only thanks to Lara's quick thinking and eyesight that they were finally able to find a way out of that area.
Boom ! ! !
Before Naruto could sigh in relief continuous explosion rang out around the cave causing debris to fall down from the cave ceiling.
"Oh shit"
"Run!"
Lara tugged at Naruto's shirt before running through the destroyed gate while avoiding the falling debris. The whole cave shook from the explosion.
'Oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no'
Lara didn't dare to look back but from the sound of the footsteps behind her she could tell that Naruto was following closely behind her.
"Don't slow down! Keep running!"
Naruto shouted as he trailed closely behind Lara. The passage was wide enough for only one person to run freely so he could only follow behind her if not he would probably have overtaken her log ago.
The explosion continued to rock the cave violently eventually causing the ground to give way underneath them and sent them sliding down to the bottom.
They hit the bottom with a heavy thud causing their whole body to ache but they didn't dare stop to breathe since the passage they fell into was full of gas.
Cough cough.
Naruto cover his nose and mouth as he ran after Lara through the narrow passage while shielding his face from the gas.
'I can't breathe' The veins on his head stared to bulge from the lack of oxygen and he found it difficult to breathe but thankfully after a few seconds of running they eventually reached the end of the passage with a large opening in the roof. The roof wasn't high so Lara was able to reach it. Naruto didn't dare linger and hurriedly climbed out of the hole.
His eyes were already watery and his vision blurry. He was still busy greedily inhaling air while a whale in water when he suddenly felt someone tug at his shirt. He was about protest but a finger was pressed against his lips. He looked up to see Lara motioning for him to keep quiet while occasionally sneaking glances from behind the cover they was not far from the hole they came out of.
Feeling confused he opened his mouth but quickly shut it when he heard a familiar voice.

'Reyes!' Naruto heart jumped in joy and surprise. He hurriedly peeked out from behind the cover to see Reyes and the others held captive in a piece of an old plane made into a cell and suspended mid air by a rope. Four scavengers patrolled around the area. Two of them were holding guns.
"Shut up"
The two of them exchanged looks only to see the joy and surprise evident in each other's eyes.
After all the suffering and hardship. All the near death encounters. The horrors and terror. Having to kill just to survive. Running head long into dangerous situations and performing insane stunts that they could only dream of in their wildest imagination they finally found them and they were alive and well.
Naruto could stop the tears from leaving his eyes. He was overjoyed that he shed tears.
'Thank goodness. Everybody is still alive grim. Your sacrifice wasn't in vain'.
The fear of grim sacrifice having been in vain had be weighing heavy on his heart. Now that he finally saw that the other were still alive the fear finally left his heart.
When Lara saw him crying she only felt that it was normal. After all, he never had the time to cry when grim died.
'He must have been overjoyed when he saw the others still alive. I guess grim's death really affected him more than I thought'
After gathering his emotion Naruto wiped the tears from his eyes before observing the guard behavior as they patrolled the cave for a few a while before nodding.
After confirming that there were only four guards guarding the prisoners Naruto and Lara quickly jumped into action.
Their attack were well coordinated not giving the guards any time to react before they harvested their lives. Thie scene didn't go unnoticed by the prisoners.
'Is that Naruto?...and Lara? Reyes gasped out in shock as she quickly recognized the two of them.
'They came to save us?'
'Is that really Lara?' Alex swallowed nervously when he saw Lara dig a hole in a scavenger's neck with her pry axe.
Even Jonah had an shocked look on his face.
Naruto and Lara however paid little attention to them only focusing on killing the guards. After killing two of the guards the remaining two rained heavy fire on them forcing them.
But they already expected this. Every team of scavengers that they had encountered always had two gunmen in their midst.
The two didn't waste anytime and quickly returned fire while scrambling for cover. The gun fight lasted a while before they were finally able to take down the last scavenger. However...
"Yeahhhh!"
"Ahahaha!"
The sudden shouts startled Naruto and Lara as they had been so focused on fight the guards that the sudden noise had caught them by surprise. Naruto looked up at the prison most especially the prisoners who were busy cheering and clapping for them.
Although the scene they had just seen had freaked the hell out of them, it was nothing compared to the joy of them regaining their freedom.
"Are you guys okay?" Lara expressed her concern after calming down from her initial surprise.
"We are fine"
"Well that was bad ass Lara. How did you get in here" Alex asked the question on their minds
"We had help" Lara sighed, her expression not giving much away.
"Grim?" Reyes however had a good guess. After all, out of all of them that were captured grim was the only one that managed to escape.
At the mention of the name their face went through multiple emotions before returning back to normal.
"Yes..." There was a slight pause before she added with a heavy heart. "...He didn't make it..."
The revelation stunned them. The words that dropped from Lara's mouth was like a bombshell.
"Shit"
"I didn't think anything could take that guy down"
"He went out swinging...gave us a chance to get to you guys. Also there's a rescue helicopter on the way. I know they are keeping Sam separately..."
"What about Whitman?" Naruto suddenly asked.
Jonah cast a sad look at Naruto before answering. "Last time I saw him he was with those bloody scavengers. I saw them in the palace when we were being escorted here"
"Guess he didn't make it to the guest rooms " Reyes shrugged nonchalantly which caused alex to scoff and say with a frown.
"Mr showbiz probably weaseled an upgrade"
