Trevor had gone home briefly to shower, change and to take the kids to school and he had taken the box of letters with him. And the engagement ring. He hadn't looked at it again because he was convinced he'd start crying again and that was a waste of time when he could have been with Olivia. He left the box at home and then got straight back in his car to drive to the hospital. He wanted to see her badly.
At the hospital he quietly opened the door and saw that Olivia was asleep. He smiled, glad that she was sleeping this time rather than unconscious and close to death. He sat next to her and held her hand lightly. He was shocked to see that she opened her eyes instantly.
"I hoped it was you," she said with a small smile. "I'm sick of the doctors already."
"You've only been conscious a few hours and already you're complaining," Trevor said rolling her eyes.
"Did you find it?" Olivia asked. "The…" she couldn't find the word she wanted to say and screwed her eyes in concentration.
"The ring? Yes I did," he said sadly. He held up his left hand delicately and she saw he wasn't wearing it. The disappointment was clear on her face.
"Ah. I understand," she said quietly.
"No you don't," he said with a small smile. "Finding a ring isn't the same as you proposing to me. Beautiful as it is. I'm waiting for you to ask me properly. When we're out of here and everything's back to normal."
"Normal?" she questioned. "Look, I tried… when you were at work, I tried to walk. I can't really do it. I…" She curled up her free hand and punched the bed in frustration.
"It doesn't matter," he said shaking his head. "You will. It'll take time but you will recover." He paused but said something else to fill the silence. "Our house misses you, our bed misses you amd the kids miss you".
She nodded happily. " I love you."
"I wanted to hear you say that," he said happily. he moved up the hospital bed and kissed her softly. "I love you too," he whispered before kissing her again. He felt rather than heard her hiss in pain. He realised he'd been leaning over her chest and was putting pressure on her stab wounds. "Oh God, I'm sorry!" he said instantly, immediately moving away from her. He felt Olivia grip his wrist tightly as he sat back down.
"Don't be sorry. It just hurts a bit." He knew she was downplaying it and was about to change the subject when Olivia spoke again. "I don't want you to feel…"
"What?" Trevor asked impatiently.
"Give me a minute," Olivia said closing her eyes in concentration. "Obligated. I don't want you to feel obligated to say yes."
"Oh Liv," he whispered sadly. He squeezed her hand before letting go and perching on the edge of the bed. "I love you," he said simply. "Do you feel the same?"
"No," she said quietly and for a second he felt his heart stop. "I love you more. I love you so much that…"
Trevor cut her off quickly before she could think of what she wanted to say. "Then that's all that matters." He lay down next to her on the bed, his head resting on the right side of her chest. After a moment of surprise she started stroking his hair lightly. He sighed with contentment at the happy simplicity of the moment.
"Has anyone mentioned when you're going to be discharged?" Trevor asked in a whisper as Liv's fingers caressed his hair.
"No they're treating me like…" Hee groaned in frustration.
"A lab rat?" Trevor suggested with a wicked smile.
"Very flattering," Olivia said sarcastically.
"How are you feeling?" he asked.
"Honestly? I'm in pain," she said. "But I'm alive, which is more than I thought I would be."
"I am going to look after you. When you get out of here."
