Two days later Trevor was helping Olivia into the house, who was getting frustrated by all attempts to help her. She didn't like being helpless. Katie was settled watching her favourite cartoon and Noah was in his room while Trevor helped Olivia up to bed. It was only five in the afternoon, but she was on a lot of painkillers and had been sleeping a lot lately, to overcome her injury.
"Stop being stubborn," Trevor said as Olivia half sat, half collapsed on the bed.
"I don't like being like this," she said with a sigh.
"Can I see?" Trevor said, indicating the dressing on her neck which was halfway to falling off anyway. Olivia nodded once and he very gently removed it, to reveal the puckered and scarred skin beneath. He brushed his fingertips over the injury as soft as a whisper. "Half an inch to the left and you would have been dead before the ambulance got to you," he said quietly.
"I know," she said quietly. She caught his hand as it fell from her neck and looked into his eyes. "Am I forgiven?"
"Yes," he said. "I'm not going to lie, it was one of the scariest hours of my life.
The emotion over Katie being kidnapped, seeing that Olivia had literally been an inch from death… it was too much for him and the tears started falling. Olivia hadn't expected this and didn't know if her comfort would be welcome or not. She tentatively put an arm around him and he collapsed into her chest, his restraint seemingly vanished. She ran her hand up and down his back soothingly as he calmed himself down. When the tears eventually gave way, he lifted his head and lightly kissed her. It was so quick and so soft, that she wasn't entirely sure it had happened. But the look in her eyes told him that it had.
"You rest," he said softly. "I'm going to make the kid's dinner, put them to bed and then come and join you okay?" Olivia nodded and watched as Trevor left the room. She put her fingers to her lips remembering his touch. She slept with a smile on her face.
"Olivia, wake up," Trevor said firmly.
"No, no, no," she cried out in her sleep. "Come back to me. Please."
"Its okay," he said quietly.
"Tell me you're alright," she said breathing heavily.
"I'm okay," he said. "I'm fine." She looked at him, her eyes running all over his as if to reassure herself of those words. "What happened?" he asked when she started staring at the ceiling.
"Bad dream."
"I guessed that," he said, his hand drifting over her arm, trying to reassure her.
"You were… dying in my arms and there was nothing I could do." Silent tears were falling down her cheeks and she lay on top of him, her head on his chest as his arms tightened around her, almost to the point of pain.
"I'm not going anywhere," he said.
"Promise me," she said as she lifted her head to look at him. "I can't lose you."
"I promise, I'm not leaving. You won't lose me." he was talking about more than a nightmare and they both knew it.
"Come here," he whispered. She did and he kissed her passionately, hands in her hair. Their tongues were tangling together as they tasted each other. The reality of his sweetness was exactly what she needed to remove the fear of his death. She never wanted to part from him but eventually the need for oxygen overcame them, and they parted.
"I love you," he whispered.
"I know," she said, her hand resting over his heart. "I love you too."
