The Sorcerer Hero: Deku
Chapter twenty-one: Examinations and exam prep
Conveniently, the quirk examination office that Ainz had set up was able to take the Class 1-A and Class 1-B students on a day that U.A. normally had off from classes. This was an opportunity for the Sorcerer King to get more detailed notes on the quirks of U.A.'s first year hero course students, as well as see if any of what he's set up has made any progress. But there's one other thing that he was looking forward to.
Due to slipping in the right words with Aizawa and Kan, Ainz was able to ensure that it wouldn't just be the Class 1-A and Class 1-B students coming in to be examined, but any and all siblings they may have as well. Ainz accomplished this by telling them that the quirk examiner made a strong suggestion that any siblings the students may have also ought to be brought in for examination, as if the students have changes going on in them, any siblings may have the same, especially if they are related by blood.
Aizawa immediately thought of Tenya's older brother Tensei, who is the pro hero Ingenium. It would not look good for Japan if one of its more notable pro heroes had a random unforeseen issue crop up with his quirk that took him out of commission. Not only was Tensei out of commission for a bit a while ago already, but Japan is still reeling from the sting of a number of its notable pro heroes, most being in the Top Ten at the time, having been killed a while ago.
Tenya, when this was mentioned to him, immediately agreed that it would be wise to have Tensei checked out. Koda said that he has a baby sibling who was born a shade under half a year ago by this point, and he bets that his mom knowing her will want said baby sibling examined just to be safe. Ainz, a bit surprised by Koda suggesting a literal baby be examined said he's certain the quirk examiner will say that children that young are too young to be checked yet.
It was Hagakure who spoke up about what Ainz was really hoping to get out of this; Tsuyu's younger siblings Satsuki and Samidare. "I think that Asui had said that her sister and brother are six and ten respectively," Hagakure said, "They're both past the common age where a person's quirk first turns on, so I bet they can be examined."
Nodding once, Ainz said, "Indeed. In fact the examination fee is waived for persons at or below the age of twelve. And the quirk examiner who identified my Sorcery quirk just so happens to be close personal friends with Mr. Suzuki, so I'm certain that a discount can be arranged at least for those of us here as we're U.A. students. Iida-san's older brother who already graduated from a hero academy and is an active pro hero will have to pay full price most likely."
Aizawa nodded in understanding, saying that it's common for quirk examiner offices to charge an examination fee. But even what Ainz listed as the full examination fee price with no manner of discounts over at the quirk examiner office he was suggesting was a fair bit cheaper than other places Aizawa could think of, and none of those places ever waived examination fees for anyone for any reason whatsoever.
As such, word was sent by Aizawa and Kan to the families of all of the Class 1-A and Class 1-B students to have all of their children go with the students to the quirk examiner office that Ainz was recommending. All that Ainz had to do now was wait for a little bit, and he'll finally get to be able to see two more potential assets that could be of great use to him in his plans to ultimately take over the second New World.
On the first day off from classes that was available, the first year hero course students of U.A. went to the quirk examiner office that Ainz recommended. They also brought what all siblings they all have respectively. The families of those siblings worried that they may end up having some drastic changes like what Yaoyorozu ended up having.
The quirk examiner, really just Ainz using an illusion spell to look like an adult male resembling a younger looking Sebas with yellow blonde hair and a clean shaven face, came out of the office he'd do the examinations in. To the surprise of the disguised Ainz, Aizawa urged that Tensei be checked first, given he is already a pro hero and technically has a history of being out of commission for a while already. "The fact he recovered and so miraculously at that means nothing if another problem that could decommission him crops up," Aizawa argued.
Not wanting to argue, the disguised Ainz agreed. He had Tensei come into the office and sit down on the padded bed thing with the paper on it, a common sight at hospitals and places were any sort of examination for one's health is done. It was in that room where Tensei saw Pestonya S. Wanko, who already knew how to act due to instruction from Ainz. Tensei didn't bat an eye at how Wanko looked as he assumed it was due to whatever quirk Wanko had.
"Please sit there and let Dr. Momon begin wan," Wanko said.
Nodding once in compliance, Tensei did as asked. "I'll need you to close your eyes, sir," Ainz said, "My quirk helps with the examination process, but it makes a blinding flash that only I don't flinch from. I'll let you know when you can open your eyes."
"Fair enough," Tensei replied as he closed his eyes. Ainz didn't exactly have a spell that JUST made a blinding flash of light, but he did have a magic ring (which he was wearing on the hand he had aimed at Tensei) that, when he wore it, allowed him to produce such an effect. He got this ring out to help with the act, but in reality when he checked someone he would just use Time Stop and then check them with Detect Quirk.
After he was done he'd drop the Time Stop and use the ring's power to make it look like he used an examination quirk. Then he'd tell whoever he was examining whatever he felt was relevant. Ainz wasn't even wanting to examine Tensei in the first place, only doing so because he felt it would put the minds of the people of Japan at ease to hear it that one of their more notable pro heroes just got a clean bill of health (on his ability to be a pro hero, at least).
Ainz was also a shade curious about Tensei, wondering if he could be used to measure the potential progress that Tenya can make. While checking Tensei with the set up he had planned, Ainz saw that Tensei was level forty, had one quirk and a quirk capacity of four, and the one quirk he had was the same as what Tenya has.
Tenya was only level fifteen and had a quirk capacity of three. As Ainz had a passing thought of if quirk capacity could be raised without the use of Quirk Capacity Potions (he made a mental note to test that theory later), he dropped the Time Stop, used the ring's light flash, then when the flash faded he told Tensei to open his eyes before telling him that he detected nothing out of the ordinary with him. Tensei was free to go after he paid the examination fee.
Ainz got nothing of immediate interest out of examining Tensei, but he did get a theory to test later as well as a means to measure the progress that Tenya makes. Within short order Ainz began to examine the students, and that's where some fun began.
...
"So you're saying you used your quirk Creation to the point all of your sudden weight gain was used up, but you woke up the next morning to find you had gained back all the weight you had used up," the disguised Ainz said to the very obese Yaoyorozu as she sat on the padded bed thing.
Nodding once, Yaoyorozu said, "I'm worried how this may impact my potential as a pro hero, Momon-sensei."
"Well after I had examined you with my quirk," Ainz began, "I have determined that this sudden weight gain is a new aspect of your quirk. Perhaps it's your quirk's way of ensuring you have the fuel needed to create objects. I have also been able to confirm that it's no threat to your health, actually it's developed protections for you to keep you from ever suffering or developing issues commonly associated with persons of considerable weight."
Yaoyorozu looked surprised to hear that. "Really? I won't ever have heart issues or develop diabetes or anything like that?"
"No you will not," Ainz assured her, leaving out the part that it's actually the aspect of a second quirk that Yaoyorozu had no idea she has now. Ainz was also happy to see that, similar to how Agari regenerates any of her Stout Strength granted weight she uses as fuel for Fat Doctor, Yaoyorozu regenerates what Stout Strength granted weight she uses as fuel for Creation. Now all that needs to be done is see if Yaoyorozu can make things like ingredients and materials from YGGDRASIL.
...
Ainz tested the rest of the students who came in, generally giving clean bills of health to everyone although he did tell those who didn't know they got a second quirk that their respective quirks had developed new aspects that were of benefit to them. Kaminari was glad to hear he'd no longer dumb himself out from overuse of his electrical quirk, and Tetsutetsu was happy to hear it that Steel had developed to the point he'd no longer have to fear Iron Fatigue.
However, he soon got to the main goal of all of this; examining Tsuyu's younger siblings as he wants to see their potential. "Your dog lady assistant is very pretty, Mr. Doctor," Satsuki said as she crawled up onto the padded bed thing with the paper on it and sat to face Ainz and Wanko.
"You are very sweet, young lady," Wanko remarked.
Ainz nodded once as he, after having Satsuki close her eyes, used Time Stop to safely check her with Detect Quirk. Ainz saw that Satsuki, despite being younger than Eri by a year, was one level below Yaoyorozu. Given Satsuki's age and lack of formal training and experience, so high a level for her was pretty amazing. Looking at her quirk and quirk capacity numbers, Ainz saw that Satsuki had one quirk and a quirk capacity of...
...Eight?!
That's the highest naturally occurring quirk capacity that Ainz has seen to date! Satsuki has all other youths Ainz had seen great potential in blown out of the water! Seeing Satsuki's quirk, it's the same as what Tsuyu has, that being Frog. Ainz saw that identical if not greatly similar quirks tend to run in family sets, so it didn't surprise him all that much to see that the Asuis have a bit of a collection of Frog quirks in their family.
After his 'examination' on Satsuki was done, Ainz had Samidare come in. Ainz had some degree of knowledge about Samidare already, mainly that the boy has Asperger's Syndrome which put him on the autism spectrum. The boy is also a fan of Ryukyu's, which Ainz took advantage of when he got an internship under Ryukyu in order to try and get on more friendly terms with Tsuyu so that he could check her siblings for their potential.
Samidare when checked was actually one level higher than Yaoyorozu, and furthermore and to the surprise of Ainz, Samidare has a quirk capacity of twelve. That beats the record Satsuki had set for highest naturally occurring quirk capacity that Ainz has seen, as well as be the first naturally occurring quirk capacity with a double digit number. Samidare, same as his sisters, has only the Frog quirk. The Sorcerer King was totally going to want to make note of Tsuyu's kid siblings and their amazing potential.
Ainz was glad that Aizawa and Kan had told the parents of the U.A. first year hero course students that having the siblings of said students examined would be a good idea. It was what finally brought Tsuyu's little siblings to him so he could check them, without ringing any bells in Tsuyu's head. Now Ainz had notes on six kids with amazing potential. Their naturally high quirk capacities meant that Ainz had a way to measure how strong people can get in the second New World.
Knowing that bit of info would be of great use to Ainz Ooal Gown.
Ainz dropped the illusion spell he had up, looking like Izuku Midoriya once more. He then met up with his classmates, saying to those who asked why he wasn't with them that he was already checked by Dr. Momon earlier that day. "You forgot that Momon-sensei is close personal friends with Mr. Suzuki," Ainz said, "That helps me see Momon-sensei if the need ever arises."
Hands on her hips, Mina said, "Well all of us, both our class and Class 1-B, are okay. Some of us even learned that our quirks improved, like how Kaminari will apparently no longer dumb himself out if he uses his electrical quirk too much, and Tetsutetsu in Class 1-B can use his quirk at max power without fear of some drawback he used to have."
Jiro turned to look at Todoroki and said, "Hey Todoroki, I saw you talking to Kendo's classmate Awase earlier after we left the quirk examiner's office. What were you two boys talking about? Or is it a private matter?"
"Oh, I was just asking him if he was still interested in the girl he told me that he had feelings for," Todoroki replied, "As a courtesy as I told him I would help him get with his crush. He told me that he still wants to get with said girl, regardless of what happened."
"Ooh," Yaoyorozu remarked, her interest piqued, "One of the boys in Itsuka's class has a crush on a girl! I don't suppose you can share with us who said crush is, can you?"
Turning to his side, Todoroki said, "I'll go talk with Awase, tell him that I can get his crush to meet with him tomorrow. You and the others will learn before classes tomorrow are done for the day who the girl Awase has eyes for is. As a side note, Awase said he'd help me get with a girl if and when I ever express interest in one."
Before anyone could have said anything, Hagakure scoffed. "Like you will ever be interested in dating!"
"Yeah, it is hard to imagine the coolest heartthrob boy among the U.A. first years finally finding a girl he's interested in," Mina remarked, "You've been cool as a cucumber."
"Pinky, See-through Girl, the both of you chill your tits now," Bakugo said, "We don't need the both of you trying to turn U.A. into the gossip capital of Japan. Were here to learn to be heroes, not talk about who is dating who."
"I agree with Bakugo," Aizawa said dryly, "We don't need to bother ourselves with the love lives of others or lack thereof. Also, you two need to be more respectful of the privacy of other people. Not everything has to be turned into the latest word on the street. I get enough of that with Nemuri." The talk of Nemuri Kayama that Aizawa made reminded Ainz that it's not just the first year hero course students who could have amazing quirks, the same could apply to the teachers as well.
He should probably check everyone at U.A., just to be safe.
The next day, training for the Provisional License Exams resumed. Ainz was confident that he was going to pass, especially as he had some spies look into things so he knew what to expect. He also had the idea of making a show out of how awesome Izuku Midoriya was, as raising the level of renown Izuku had in the second New World was part of Ainz's plan to take everything over.
Ainz as he destroyed a cement wall that Cementoss had set up (Cementoss was surprised that the Fireball Ainz cast had busted the wall so easily) heard the girls in the other area of the gym cheer excitedly, some sounding like someone just proposed marriage. Looking over, the Sorcerer King saw that Yaoyorozu was being congratulated by the other Class 1-A girls, with Todoroki standing off to the side as he watched things go on.
"I guess Todoroki helped Awase get his feelings out to Yaoyorozu," Ainz muttered to himself, before he turned back around and busted a cement wall that Cementoss made by blasting it with a Dragon Lightning. Although Cementoss's power couldn't stop Ainz's attack spells, he did see it served as an effective source of shields to block attacks at the level of power in the second New World.
Ainz Ooal Gown added Cementoss's quirk to the list of quirks he wanted a copy of. Ainz was also wanting to keep an eye out for choice quirks he saw in action at the Provisional Licence Exams, as he's always wanting to scout for things of interest to him. And given that the more he learned of the powers of the second New World the better, Ainz was always scouting for things to collect.
...
Within short order, the day of the Provisional License Exams came. Busses carrying the students of U.A. taking part in the exams parked outside of a place called Takoba National Stadium. Ainz and his peers, all of them in their hero outfits, got off the bus that brought them here. The Class 1-A students were met up by the Class 1-B students. There Ainz saw the first signs of love blooming between Yaoyorozu and Yosetsu.
After Yaoyorozu backed off, she and the other Class 1-A students heard Monoma speak up, "You all had better put in extra effort to pass and get your provisional licences." Class 1-A all turned to look at Monoma. He was looking at Class 1-A as a whole, but the look on his face, in his eyes, denoted how he wasn't about to go on a tangent against their class.
"You owe it to your lost classmate to put in extra effort for his sake," Monoma went on, "It would be a show of disrespect to his memory if even one of you failed."
"...Huh, and here I thought you were going to be a hysteric holler monkey again," Bakugo said, "But here you go simply telling us to knock some heads around in Grape Head's name."
"I will admit, Monoma has not once been anti-Class 1-A ever since Mineta was killed back during the attack on the summer break training camp," Sato remarked.
His expression remaining even, Monoma explained, "Even I know better than to bust the chops of others if fresh grief is still gouged into their hearts. I am going to permit you all a grieving period before I go back to trying to put my class above yours as we deserve."
Folding her arms over her chest, Mina said, "Well you haven't completely changed, but you are showing at least some courtesy. Thanks."
As the groups of two students separated, Ainz's attention was caught by Aizawa calling out to him. This made Ainz, plus Todoroki and Tenya who were with him, turn to see Aizawa walk up to them with, surprisingly enough, Hitoshi Shinso wearing a variant of Aizawa's hero outfit. "Midoriya, could I ask you to help Shinso here find his footing in the Provisional License Exams?" Aizawa asked, "Given you have more than proven yourself competent, I figured Shinso following your lead would give him a little boost."
"Aizawa-sensei, why is Shinso of Class 1-C here?" Tenya asked.
"Nezu actually has a policy for the hero course classes at U.A. to be at max capacity," Aizawa began to explain, "I have been working with Shinso, training him so he could potentially transfer to the hero course in his second year at U.A. Given how utterly biased against non-combat quirks the entrance exams are in the practical portion, transfers into the hero course from outside are the best chance students like Shinso have at becoming pro heroes through U.A."
Gesturing to Shinso, Todoroki asked, "If he's aiming to transfer into the hero course during his second year, why is he here now?"
Aizawa gave his students a dry look. "As you and your classmates ought to be aware Todoroki, there is a vacant seat in Class 1-A at the moment. Nezu says that depending on Shinso's performance during the Provisional License Exams today, he could be transferred into the hero course this year and given the vacant seat among your peers. The transfer will be guaranteed if Shinso is able to earn his provisional licence today, as doing so will see Shinso join us immediately."
Hearing this piqued Ainz's interest, as he felt Shinso has potential but was held back by the way things had been set up by those in charge. In many ways, that made Shinso comparable to Izuku who was kept down because he was quirkless. Seeing potential being kept from expressing itself was an offense to the Sorcerer King, especially if said potential could be put to work for the benefit and glory of Nazarick.
Ainz would have to adjust his plans for the Provisional License Exams a bit to compensate for Shinso being dropped in, though. But it shouldn't be a problem; Ainz can make up for it by having the brainwasher stick with Tenya, Todoroki, and the rest of Class 1-A when the surprises began. "I think that if someone has potential, they ought to be given a chance to prove it," Ainz remarked, "I'm sure I speak for the others here when I say we'll help Shinso see things through here."
Aizawa gave Ainz a single approving nod. "Good luck to all of you and your classmates." Aizawa, after leaving Shinso with Ainz and his friends, turned around and took off to go speak with other pro hero teachers.
"Midoriya has a point, Shinso," Tenya said as he turned to face Shinso, "If you have potential, then it ought to be given a chance to shine."
Shinso let off a small smile; barely there, but Shinso was giving off happy vibes. "It's nice to see folks willing to give me a chance to prove I can be a good pro hero despite having a quote unquote 'villainous' quirk."
"No quirk, no power, in and of itself is villainous or heroic," Ainz said, "It's how things are used, the intent behind said usage, that plays at least the lion's share of determining if something is good or evil. A creative mind can take anything that seems one way or the other and use it to the effect that's opposite of what would normally be expected."
"An excellent point, Midoriya!" Tenya said, "Well anyway, we ought to get going in to check in for the Provisional License Exams." Ainz and his classmates, with Shinso following along behind, made their way into Takoba National Stadium to get ready for the event that will determine whether or not they'll get their provisional licences or not.
...An event that none of them knows exactly what will happen there, save for Ainz Ooal Gown.
Later inside of Takoba National Stadium, Ainz and the other exam takers were all in a very large room. Ainz estimated at least fifteen-hundred hero academy students, from hero high schools all over Japan, had gathered here to try and achieve glory. All that Ainz knew for certain was that things were going to play out in a way that ensured that the name Izuku Midoriya would be seen all over the country as the number one hope for the future of Japan's hero society.
The attention of the exam takers was drawn to a panel of persons from the HPSC, who were running the event today. A sleep deprived looking man from the HPSC named Mera said that out of the fifteen-hundred plus exam takers there, only a fraction of them would get to take the actual exams. This was due to the HPSC wanting only the highest quality of persons to be given licences, as threats to society were greater than ever, so only the best of the best will do to deal with it.
All of the exam takers were given three light up targets and six balls, the idea here being to hit the targets on other exam takers. If all of one exam taker's targets are lit, they're out. This will continue until only a fraction of the total number of students taking the exams are left. Ainz, just to be safe, subtly cast a spell on his targets after putting them on to ensure anything thrown at them will miss their mark completely, ensuring that his targets will never be lit up.
After everyone had their targets on, the HPSC people left, and a few moments after that, the walls of the room everyone was in fell away. The Sorcerer King felt that this was a signal that the Provisional License Exams were starting in earnest, but his unreadable expression hid well the fact that things were not going to be playing out as the pro heroes and the HPSC were hoping. But regardless, all of the hero students were gonna be given a chance to shine.
And the name that will shine brightest will be Izuku Midoriya.
...
Up in the audience, Aizawa sat with Hizashi, Nemuri, Sekijiro, Ryo, and a pro hero teacher from Ketsubutsu called Ms. Joke. "Your kids are amazing, Shouta and Kan," Ms. Joke said, "I just hope that they are ready for the other students all ganging up on them."
"Ah," Ryo said as he nodded his canine head once in understanding, "The quote unquote 'Crushing of U.A.'. I heard it's something of an unofficial tradition that U.A. students are targeted by the students of other hero schools to be eliminated, taking advantage of what was shown at the Sports Festival. We ought to try to address that."
"Part of being a pro hero means being able to pull yourself out of a tight spot if need be," Aizawa said, "The kids down there will have to learn that th-"
*THOOM*
Aizawa was cut off with a giant black portal appeared at the one far end of the stadium's arena. Additionally, walls shot up to block off all exits, trapping all of the students and keeping them from being able to escape. As the persons in the audience began to get up to deal with what was obviously an attack by villains, Nemuri let out a surprised yelp when a knife was pressed against her neck by someone behind her.
Turning to look, Aizawa and the others saw Spinner had taken her hostage. "Our interests cannot be allowed to be interrupted by you pro heroes," Spinner said coolly. As Spinner spoke, Chimera, Beros, Toga, Rappa, and Tengai appeared to confront the pro hero teachers. Aizawa was able to see it as villains, mostly clones of Twice made by Twice's quirk, came in to occupy the people that were in the audience to watch the Provisional License Exams.
Aizawa was also able to see it down in the arena as what could only be described as an army of the dead came filing out of the portal. Mostly animated humanoid skeletons with shields and simple melee weapons, but there was a small but fair number of animated humanoid corpses. What really set fear into Aizawa's heart was seeing a pair of big black skeleton warrior monsters file out after all of that, followed by the villain Dabi and an unidentified villain resembling a tall oni wearing samurai armor and carrying a kanabo of the highest quality.
The big black skeleton warrior monsters set up white sheets and a seat for the oni samurai villain, like it was a field office for a general in feudal Japan. The oni samurai villain took his seat, with Dabi standing beside him, to watch as his army advanced towards the hero academy students. At least the big black skeleton warrior monsters stayed with Dabi and the oni samurai.
Aizawa immediately turned to look at the villains and tried to activate his quirk, but found it not working for some reason. "Hey Shouta, my quirk isn't working!" Ms. Joke said, "I can't make these guys fall over laughing!"
"Mine's not working either!" Aizawa said.
"I can't get mine to work as well," Nemuri said, clearly trying to force her quirk to work. Spinner let her go, and the villains proceeded to rush Aizawa's group.
Down in the arena, Ainz as he saw the other hero students panic as well as prep to fight gave a passing thought on how, if Aizawa, Nemuri, and Ms. Joke survive, he'll return their quirks he took while he had Time Stop active. He can't have people interfere with his plans by incapacitating any of his subordinates.
END, CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE
Author's notes;
This chapter sees Ainz get notes on assets he'll be keeping an eye out for in the future. He also gets ready for the Provisional License Exams which he's going to use for his own ends. He's surprised when Shinso is dropped on his lap just before everyone heads on in to take the exams, but he rolls with it.
Then the exams start, but it's cut off when Ainz's subordinates launch an attack that throws everything off script. Some teachers are rendered useless, meaning that the students will be on their own for this one. Later.
