Story # 05

Lucius Malfoy was reading the paper when the sudden silence got his attention. Knowing it was never a good thing when two young wizards became too quiet, he rose from his chair and walked into the next room. What he saw tested his ability to hide his reaction. Instead of cracking a smile and chuckling, he gave the two boys his best neutral face.

"Draco, come here." Lucius called and watched as his son slowly stood up to walk over, head tilted down in a semblance of shame.

"Yes, father." Draco addressed his sire.

"Care to explain why your friend and playmate is the color of a tomato?" Lucius asked.

He watched as his son glanced over to his friend and shrugged.

"You are a Malfoy, Draco; you must learn to take responsibility for your actions. We do not shrug our answers." Lucius reprimanded.

"I didn't mean to do it, father. It was an accident." Draco admitted.

"What did you cast, son?" Lucius prodded.

"It was a spell that was supposed to change his hair color, father, not his skin." Draco explained.

"What spell did you cast, son?" Lucius asked again, still trying to hold in his laughter. The young wizards had been experimenting with various spells all summer, preparing themselves for their upcoming first year at Hogwarts.

"Convertat Rubrum" Draco muttered.

"Did you not specify what was to turn red?" Lucius sighed, children.

"No sir, I just pointed my wand at his hair." Draco answered.

"I see, well, looks like we will need to take Theodore to the hospital so they can reverse it." Lucius shared, still holding his laughter at bay. The look each boy had spoke volumes to their embarrassment.

"Can't you reverse it, father?" Draco pleaded.

"I'm afraid I cannot. You should be more careful with your intentions behind the spells you cast, son." Lucius explained.

Lucius was glad that he had had a discussion with Draco's friends' fathers. They had all decided to teach the boys a lesson if the situation at hand ever happened. Between the four of them: Draco, Theo, Greg and Vincent; they all knew a visit to St. Mungo's would eventually be required. It wasn't that any of them wanted an extra expense; they just knew eventually a spell would be cast that none of them would be able to counter; case in point was in front of him.

"Yes, father." Draco knew his father was right and wasn't looking forward to the teasing he and Theo would get from this mistake. He had tried to cancel it then he tried to reverse it but nothing had worked.

Lucius gathered both boys and marched them through the floo. Once at St. Mungo's, Lucius filled out the needed paperwork and Theo was taken back in short order. It didn't take the medi-witch long to reverse the spell but she did give both boys a talking to about making sure they know what a spell does and how to cast properly. Normally Lucius wouldn't allow someone else to correct his son but he felt the lesson learned would sink in a bit better if his son realized his father was allowing a medi-witch to lecture him.

Once home, Lucius turned to the two young wizards and sternly said, "I trust you both will be more careful with the spells you cast?"

"Yes sir." Was said in unison.

"Very well, as you were." Lucius dismissed the boys as he returned to his study to finish reading the paper and have a good chuckle without an audience.
