CAPITULO 1; EL SIN DRAGÓN
Kings Landing, 70 BC
The queen Alyssane walked perplexed by her handmaidens' warning. And she was walking after having cradled little Saera, when they told her about her son. She knew, from the first moment she married Jaehaerys, that things were not going to be simple and that her children would be special... but her young son baffled him.
No wonder, Vaegon began to surprise not only her, but her entire family. Having said the first word of her "Mother" of her with only a moon. By the middle of the name day she was already walking correctly, to her joy, and by the first name day she could read with the perfection of a maester. All this had filled him with joy, as did Jaehaerys, who marveled that her son had been blessed with such wisdom.
However, soon the surprises stopped being so pleasant. By his second day with the name Vaegon he had surpassed Grand Maester Elysar in knowledge, to everyone's amazement, his calculation skills rivaled those of the Iron Bank's best accountants, and he already spoke High Valyrian perfectly: he had even created a strange numbering system! with something that he called zero, and that allowed him to do calculations very quickly. The queen knew that she should be grateful to the gods that her son was healthy, but deep inside her there was something that told her that something was not right with her son. Vaegon interacted with his brothers, but they were not close, and he spent all his time reading. Another thing that everyone around him had missed was how he sometimes acted disconcertingly brooding all over the place, though nonetheless, Vaegon was close to both Maegelle and Daella, and seemed to be on good terms with Alyssa, even though they weren't even remotely close. a relationship remotely resembling that of him being attentive to them, and even promising them in front of her that he would get them a dragon. Another thing that worried her was his gaze, sometimes she seemed lost, other times crazy, and every time he saw Baelon he frowned at her. He did it when no one seemed to be looking at him, but the queen noticed him, and barely concealed how much she disliked his older brother, and he was generally kind towards Aemon, almost always redind books him.
The queen's concerns increased when the servants told her that she was sometimes heard saying strange things that no one could understand, even in strange languages, and she had written several books in a strange language that no one could decipher. The queen had until then entrusted the care of the child to the grand master, and Elysar had assured her that her son was fine. In fact, it was very common for Vaegon to have very entertaining conversations, both with Elisar and Barth. With the latter he talked for hours and hours about the origin of dragons, something that apparently obsessed him, but that was normal in the family.
But as she had been told, her son had been working on something, for which he asked for the help of the grand master who was too impressed by Vaegon, who had just summoned the entire court announcing that he had made a great discovery, although the queen prayed. so that nothing serious would happen to his son, for some reason he feared that some fatality could happen to him. Jaehaerys, for his part, did not interfere with his son, he was simply satisfied with his abilities, and was delighted with the reports of Septon Barth, in addition, much of the time he did not dedicate to the seven kingdoms was dedicated to Aemon. But what bothered the queen the most was that he felt very uncomfortable having Vaegon in front of her, and he blamed himself for it. He was not like other children, he even hated having long hair, and he always saw him as lonely, and somewhat melancholic.
When he arrived at the throne room, the king was sitting on the iron throne and Septon Barth was at the foot of the throne, quite intrigued there, along with the council and some members of the court. His son stood next to the Grand Master and held a long wooden stick in his hands. Full of pride he showed them a strange metal sphere, which he called the armillary sphere. There was also Prince Aemon, who was observing everything in silence, and always showing respect for his brother. Baelon, who was more interested in swords, watched him with amusement.
"Well boy," said King Jaehaerys in a jovial tone. "What do you want to show us?"
A short-haired Vaegon in a simple black doublet stepped forward with the pride of a dragon, but it was evident that he had worked hard to create that sphere. On the other hand, the poor man was somewhat weak for his age, skinny and with a pale complexion.
"Father, I have discovered a secret of the world" Vaegon said solemnly as he pointed to the sphere "The earth is round and revolves around the Sun!" he shouted and everyone was shocked by what Vaegon had just said, some thought it was nonsense others thought it was heresy, but the king seemed amused as if he were watching him jump for a bauble. Although he remembered reading about old Valyria in which it was believed that the earth was round.
"And how did you come to that conclusion?" Aemon asked curiously.
"I started from ancient Valyria, because it was the dragon lords who believed it was round," Aegon replied, pleasing Septon Barth, who nodded without problems. "From there I began to think, and I made a series of calculations, which I represented here. " he said pointing to the Armillary sphere "The world is spherical, father, but not perfectly, so the latitude in this case varies enormously due to the flow of summers and winters, which presents an anomaly in it. And for your information. Our world has a diameter of approximately two thousand five hundred and fifty leagues. The moon revolves around our world. And our world revolves around the star, like all worlds, the star being more than one hundred and seven times larger than our world.
In the next few minutes, Vegon pointed out the metal barriers along the sphere and proceeded to explain rotation and translation. Aemon approached to take a closer look at the sphere. It was very rudimentary, but that did not detract from his attention. This he had obtained from his knowledge of the real Earth, but he had had to adapt it to that world. Then, at the end of his tirade, he showed them his notes, collected in a book, that he had been scribbling in recent days, down to what everyone thought were child's drawings, something more normal for a child of the age of him. Septon Barth began to read the documents, he was truly delighted, and later he would study them in depth, perhaps they could be useful for his treatise.
"This is... a prodigy" said the king looking at the grand master, thinking at first that it was a child's fantasy, but Elysar's serious look made him understand the seriousness of what was happening.
"His Grace," the Grand Master said, unable to contain his excitement, "Prince Vaegon's studies have already been sent to Oldtown... the Archmaster will study them for decades."
The king smiled with pride, and stood up from the throne clearly satisfied, and looked at the sphere accompanied by his firstborn, although Baelon was not very interested in that and yawned, which caused Vaegon to frown at him. As for the court, they observed all this with a mixture of dismay, amazement and stupor at what had just been revealed to them, even more so coming from a child of only seven years old. The queen preferred not to say anything, she approached her son and looked at him for a moment. She didn't really know what to do with it, but finally she had one of the maids take it away, while Jaehaerys looked curiously at the sphere, as did Aemon, while Septon Barth read the documents cautiously.
"We have three wonderful children," the conciliator said happily, while he ruffled Aemon's hair and attracted Baelon, who had some vague interest in the sphere, seeing the attention his older brother was paying him.
"Yes...husband...it is something that is not common"
Already in his chambers, Vaegon smiled. He loved to impress others with his abilities, with his father he could only do it when he graduated in the semesters. And that was provided that Noe was with the secretary on duty doing who knows what, so that his mother would have a problem with antidepressants. Maybe he was attracting a little too much attention, but he had no time to waste, Westeros was in a dark time, and the industrial revolution would take decades of effort, he could barely wait to successfully carry out the first industrial revolution in his life, assuming that lived fifty or sixty years, which was not the case.
But he is still somewhat bitter.
"I certainly won't get things because of my pretty face," Jason complained. Vaegon Targaryen was not attractive, nor unattractive, but comparisons of him with Aemon or Baelon were hateful. On the other hand, although he was not as lonely as the real Vaegon, people didn't like him, it was worse, for some reason his efforts to impress people also scared them. And that was counterproductive in the long run. He was not Tywin Lannister, and he did not need to be feared, at least not in principle. The truth is that he felt very alone, having not entirely Maegelle and Daella were good girls, but not suitable company for someone who was thirty-two years old. Not to mention that for some strange reason, the queen kept a certain distance from him, at least compared to the rest of her children. It's not that she was bad by any means, but it was like she wasn't comfortable with her presence. In any case, the dinner was pleasant, and the king congratulated him for what he called "a feat worthy of a Targaryen" although the rest, except Aemon, barely understood anything of what Vaegon had explained. What he did notice was the presence of Jocelyn Baratheon, because that same year both she and Aemon would get engaged in a wedding that would rival the golden wedding, so the court was already preparing for such an event.
Anyway, it didn't matter to him. What Vaegon really needed was a dragon. If there was something that had not gone unnoticed, it was that at that time, only Jaehaerys and Alyssane, and also their aunt Rhaena, were the only dragon riders. Aemon did not yet have a dragon, and Baelon aspired to claim Vhagar. On the other hand, the rest of the dragons, with the badly injured Balerion at their head, resided in Dragonpit, after the horrible fate of Aerea Targaryen. He had thought for a moment about claiming a dragon from the place, but he burned it for a moment.
"But I don't think they'll let me do it, after all I'm only a third son" Vaegon said aloud to himself. And he made sense. Aemon was the heir, Baelon was expected to be his hand, Alyssa was expected to be Baelon's wife, plus she was the eldest daughter. But you couldn't have many dragon jonets, since in the long run it would be a serious problem for House Targaryen, since if a daughter of the king married a man outside the house, this house would obtain dragons, something that they simply did not. could be allowed. However, Vaegon needed a dragon, in that world if you were a Targaryen that was essential. On the other hand, he was thinking carefully, if he became the first son of the king to claim a dragon, this would bring him a certain prestige, and also fame for having achieved it at such a young age.
"Yes... I have to do it" he said to himself as he looked out the window of his room.
But he couldn't go to the Dragonpit, the dragon guard would block his access, and such a small dragon didn't suit him either. While Caraxes was fierce, Vaegon did not have the courage to claim him. Instead he decided that he would claim Vhagar. That was one of the dragons of conquest, and along the way he would give Baelon a big disappointment. It's NOT that he hated it in itself, but he envied the affection and respect that everyone showed him.
It might be crazy what he was going to do, but he needed to take some risks. And taking out a small bag with golden dragons, she waited until dawn, when the guards were asleep. And stealthily, she went to another empty room. Vaegon carefully closed the door behind him, taking a torch, and pressed a stone that allowed him access to one of the many passageways built by Maegor. One of the reasons why Vaegon caused so much strangeness was his ability to appear and disappear from one place to another. And that was because he explored the red fortress whenever he could, and he had discovered several passages by chance. He walked down the stairs carefully, reciting the number of the steps. He had already been thinking about something like this for several days, just in case, so he had left a small bag with a dagger and more gold coins that he had stolen from Lord Celtigar. He covered himself with a black and humble cloak, and slipped out of one of the secret exits of the fortress.
Under the cover of morning he set out at a cautious pace, and always through the mostly safe neighborhoods. It took him about an hour, and he wasn't very sure, but he arrived at the dock, if there was no ship to Dragonstone, he would retrace his path, but if there was a ship, he would take it without hesitation.
He looked at the ships one by one, they were mostly merchants from Braavos or White Harbor, but there were also Vlearyon ships. But most of the ships went only to Lys to Oldtown or Braavos, some to Spicewall, but none to Dragonstone, until he heard the captain of a carrack bound for Pentos talk about a stopover at the Targaryen ancestral home.
He steeled himself, legs weakening, and he swallowed hard, but finally took a step forward.
"Sir... I would like to pay for a ticket to Dragonstone" she said in a neutral voice.
The captain of the ship, a bravosi with a dark complexion, a fleshy little fellow with pitted teeth, took it in good grace.
"Get out of here, boy," he told him.
But a bag with several golden dragons changed his mind.
"My parents are dead, and my aunt lives in Dragonstone...please...I need to get there" he told her with a soft and somewhat hurt voice.
Vaegon did not know if he really managed to soften him up, or if it was because of the gold coins, or perhaps both, but the merchant agreed to take him to the island, although he would have to work scrubbing the floors of his ship during the journey. Vaegon did not reply. There were worse things.
And as the ship moved away, the prince also moved away from the commotion that originated in the red fortress, realizing a little later that Vaegon had disappeared, which caused the queen to place a hand on her chest when she was certain that there would be a fatality
