As the conversation with the Denali clan continued, I found myself genuinely enjoying their company. Tanya and Kate shared stories of their life in Alaska, their voices animated and full of laughter. Irina remained a bit quieter but chimed in with sharp wit when she did speak. Eleazar and Carmen were warm and friendly, making me feel like we had known each other much longer than just one evening.

"I'm so happy to hear that you're embarking on a new journey," I said, looking around at all of them. "It sounds like you have some exciting dreams."

Tanya nodded, her eyes sparkling. "Yes, we do. We're looking to establish a new community of like-minded vampires who are committed to our way of life. It's an ambitious project, but we're all very excited about it."

"That is great," I said, genuinely impressed.

"It is," Eleazar agreed, his expression thoughtful. "We've learned so much from Carlisle and Esme, and we want to share that knowledge and help others find a path that works for them."

As the night wore on, the party began to wind down. The Cullens and the Denali clan mingled in smaller groups, the atmosphere still buzzing with the warmth of the evening's conversations. I insisted on helping Esme tidy up, though she vehemently refused, when Alice approached me, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

"Bella, I have something for you," she said, her voice bubbling with enthusiasm.

My eyes narrowed in suspicion. "What is it?" I asked.

Despite my lack of enthusiasm and request for no gifts, she led me to a quiet corner of the room and pulled out a small, beautifully wrapped box.

I glared at her and slowly lifted the lid to find an exquisite amber pendant nestled inside. The amber was a deep, rich hue, set in an ornate silver setting that seemed to glow in the soft light. It was the exact shade of her eyes, and it made my heart flutter in my chest. It was breathtakingly beautiful, and I could tell it was also very expensive.

"Alice, I... I can't accept this," I stammered, looking up at her. "It's too much."

She shook her head, her expression firm but kind. "Nonsense, Bella. It's your birthday, and you deserve something special. Please, let me do this for you."

"But, it's too valuable. I can't wear jewelry on the farm; it might get damaged." I protested.

"Bella," her amber eyes bore into mine with frightening intensity. "You don't have to wear it every day. I just want you to have something special from me. Please?"

I hesitated, but the sincerity in her eyes melted my resistance. Her pleading was practically blackmail. "Okay, but you know you didn't have to do this. Your love is already more than I deserve."

She smiled, her eyes twinkling. "I know, but I wanted to. And don't you be ridiculous. I am the one who doesn't deserve you."

I rolled my eyes as she took the pendant from me and placed it around my neck, and I had to admit, it did feel perfect. The weight of it against my chest was a comforting reminder of her thoughtfulness and our love. I hugged her tightly, grateful not just for the beautiful gift but for her unwavering company.

"Thank you," I whispered.

Alice and I walked home through the forest trail, the moonlight filtering through the trees and casting a silvery glow on the path. The night air was cool, and the familiar scent of pine and earth surrounded us, creating a serene atmosphere.

"I'm sorry I can't spend the night," she said, her voice breaking the quiet. "My family is meeting with the astrologer. We need to discuss some important things, and it's best if you stay on the farm for your safety."

I nodded, still feeling a twinge of disappointment. "I'll be fine. Just be careful, okay?"

She smiled reassuringly. "I will."

As we approached the edge of the forest, I could see Jacob waiting by the farmhouse, his tall figure silhouetted against the soft glow of the porch light. The tension between him and Alice was palpable, a reminder of the uneasy tension between the Quileute wolves and vampires. Alice's expression tightened as we neared him, but she maintained her composure.

"Wolf," she acknowledged with a nod.

"Bloodsucker," he replied, his tone curt but civil.

I sighed. Though they weren't outrightly hostile towards each other anymore, this passive aggression was almost worse.

They exchanged a brief, tense glance before Alice turned to me. "I'll see you soon, Bella. Stay safe."

"I will. Thanks," I said, giving her a quick hug before she disappeared into the forest, moving with her usual grace and speed.

Jacob stepped forward, his expression softening as he looked at me. "Happy birthday," he said, pulling something from his pocket. "I have a gift for you."

He handed me a small, intricately carved wood wolf. The craftsmanship was stunning, each detail meticulously etched to bring the figure to life. I turned it over in my hands, marveling at the smooth finish and the careful attention to detail.

"Jake, this is amazing," I said, looking up at him in awe. "You made this yourself?"

He scratched the back of his head awkwardly, a hint of pride in his eyes. "Yeah, I did."

"I love it," I said, feeling a warmth spread through me. "Thank you so much."

He smiled, his expression softening even more. "I'm glad you like it. Happy birthday, Bella."

We stood there for a moment, the carved wolf nestled safely in my hand.

"Come on," he said, breaking the silence. "Let's get you inside. It's been a long day."

We walked toward the farmhouse, side by side, the weight of the day's events slowly lifting as we moved forward.

Before he could leave, a question nagged at the back of my mind. "Jake, wait," I called out, causing him to pause and turn back toward me.

"Yeah?" he asked, his expression curious.

I hesitated for a moment, unsure of how to phrase my concern. "Do you think... do you think my scent has changed? Do I seem different to you somehow?"

He raised an eyebrow, clearly skeptical, but he stepped closer and sniffed the air around me. He frowned slightly, then shook his head. "Nope, you smell the same to me. Why do you ask?"

I sighed, feeling a mix of relief and confusion. "It's just that... weird things have been happening. This morning, the artichokes fell off their stems on their own, and the ground started vibrating. It felt almost like... magic."

He chuckled, a low, reassuring sound. "It's probably nothing. Strange things happen sometimes, but it doesn't mean you've changed or become something else."

I wanted to believe him, but the day's events still weighed heavily on my mind. "Maybe you're right," I conceded, offering a small smile. "Thanks."

He returned my smile, his eyes warm. "Anytime. Happy birthday again. Get some rest, okay?"

"Goodnight," I said as he turned and headed back toward the forest.

I watched him go, his figure fading into the darkness, before heading inside. The house was quiet, and the silence gave me a chance to reflect on everything that had happened. Despite Jacob's reassurances, the feeling of unease lingered.

I climbed into bed, and the carved wolf Jacob had given me was placed carefully on my nightstand. As I pulled the covers over me, I took one last look at the amber pendant Alice had given me, its warm glow a comforting presence in the dim light.

Closing my eyes, I tried not to let Alice's absence get to me. Despite all the gifts I received today, I had not gotten the thing I had been craving for months––Alice. All of her.

As a lonely tear slid down my cheek, I realized that I had no one to blame but myself. I had pushed her away so many times when we were both still human, and now, I may have missed my chance.

Eventually, the pull of sleep became too strong to resist, and I drifted off, hoping fruitlessly for a dreamless night.
