Disclaimer: Own nothing but love the characters.

AN: Heard this song on my Pandora app last night and remembered seeing a Music Video of it on YouTube. When I looked it up there was also a stage performance video listed, so I watched it several times actually, and this story came to me, hope you enjoy it.

Radio City Music Hall

Kate was standing at the back of the stage in complete darkness waiting for the music to begin. She recalled the last time she was in this position; it was during the NYPD amateur competition last year. She remembered how nervous she was, scared shitless would probably describe how she felt better. Rick had convinced her that they should enter, he even came up with the song, the scenery and the costumes from a music video he saw on YouTube, so she gave in and agreed. They even practiced and she had to agree they were pretty good. There was only one problem, she suffered from stage fright. Performing in front of Martha and Alexis was easy enough but put her in front of a live audience and she'd freeze up. She had explained as much to Martha who advised her to tell Rick, but she had promised him and would see it through. Then on the night of the competition Martha gave her the advice that gave her the incentive she needed to pull it off. Martha told her "Forget about the audience Katherine, don't look at them, just look into Rick' eyes, nowhere else. You're doing this for him, no one else." It was that advice that propelled her to perform their act and when they had finished, she had to duck her head in embarrassment as the audience gave them a standing ovation, the only such ovation of the entire evening. She curled into Rick' arms when Jimmy Kimmel came out on stage and pronounced them the winners.

Tonight, was going to be different though, first of all it wasn't a competition, at least it wasn't for them. It is the MTV Video Music Awards Show, she and Rick has been selected to act as MCs. Secondly, she's not nervous, she has successfully overcome her stage fright, is somewhat of a celebrity herself now. . And while Rick won't be on stage with her for the first part he would walk on when she reached a certain line in the song.

Just then the first piano note was played, the overhead spotlights came on illuminating her. She began her walk toward the front of the stage singing as she came.

Looking back over the years
Of all the things I've always meant to say
But the words didn't come easily
So many times, through empty fears
Of all the nights I tried to pick up the phone
So scared of who might me answering

You try to live your life from day to day
But seeing you across the room tonight

(at this point she turns her head to see Rick walking toward her)

Just gives me away

(Rick arrives and they put their arm around the others' back and they begin the chorus together in perfect unison)

'Cause the heart won't lie
But sometimes life gets in the way
But there's one thing that I won't change
I know, I've tried
The heart won't lie
You can live your alibi
Who can see you're lost inside
A foolish disguise
The heart won't lie

(At this point Rick takes a half step away and turns to face her and begins singing)

Long after tonight
Will you still hear my voice through the radio
Old desires make us act carelessly
Long after tonight, after the fire
After the scattered ashes fly
Into the four winds blown and gone
Will you come back to me?
You try to live your life from day to day
But seeing you across the room tonight
Just gives me away

(At this point Rick rejoins Kate, takes her hand in his and they sing together)

'Cause the heart won't lie
Sometimes life gets in the way
(Rick) But there's one thing that I won't change
(Rick) I know I've tried
The heart won't lie
You can live your alibi
Who can see you're lost inside
(Kate) a foolish disguise

(Rick) The heart won't lie

(Kate) The heart won't lie

Rick and Kate stepped forward and took a bow, the crowd of nearly six thousand rewarding their performance with a long and loud applause. When the applause ceased Kate lifted her mike and began speaking. "Thank you. Tonight, we are here to honor the victors in this year's music videos…"

"And to get us started here is Beyoncé with her entry for Song of the Year, so let's give her a big hand." Rick continued for her.

Rick took hold of Kate' hand, and they walked off.

And so, the evening progressed with there being seventeen video awards, six professional awards, and three special awards, one of them being the Global Icon Award awarded to the group Queen whose unparalleled career has impacted and influenced a unique level of success in music and beyond.

A very tired Rick and Kate got home that night and went straight to bed. "You were terrific tonight, Kate," he said as he crawled in behind her.

"Which part," she replied taking hold of his hand that he placed over her waist.

"Both actually, but your singing of that song has improved tenfold."

"Thanks, but as far as the other part, I'd rather not do it again."

"Me either. Who knew it would be so tiring."

"It was, now go to sleep Babe. I love you."

"Love you too."

It was only moments later that they fell into a deep slumber.
