The next morning, Ryder called Lily again on the large TV screen in the observatory room and called the pups to come up to see her. Lily answered, and Ryder saw that she looked much better than when he called her the previous night. She greeted them, and Ryder and the pups greeted her back.
"Ryder, the plane holding the time capsule has just taken off," said Lily, brushing the front of her hair. "The shipping crew told me."
"Alright, Lily. We'll keep an eye on the progress from here. Thanks for letting us know," Ryder replied with a smile.
"Anytime, Ryder. And pups," she said, turning to them. "I want to thank you all for helping me find the capsule. Especially you, Skye."
Skye's face beamed and her tail wagged, feeling pleased at being praised by her idol. "You're welcome, Lily! We'd help you with anything at any time."
"And me?" asked Marshall.
"And you, too, Marshall," Lily added.
"Yes!" Marshall whooped. The others laughed along with him.
"And, also," said Lily, as the laughing ceased. "Since you've done so well in helping me, I'd like to return the favour with a gift."
"A gift?" repeated Ryder.
"That's a very nice thing of you to do, Lily, but no thanks," said Chase, sitting straight and puffing out his chest. "We were just doing our jobs as protectors and assistants."
"That's valiant of you, Chase, but I'd to give this opportunity to you," replied Lily. "Also, I think you might like this a lot."
"And what is this?" asked Rocky. Skye glared at him as though he had just said something very informal in front of someone very important.
Lily looked as though she couldn't hold it in anymore, and grinning, she said, "I'd like to invite you all to come with me to France to see the Walker Excavations."
Ryder and the pups gasped, surprised at the news they had just received.
"You what?" asked Marshall, sounding incredulous.
"The time capsule will be transported directly to the museum, and I've been told that it will have a special exhibition of its own," Lily told them. "So, I thought you guys might want to go and see it for yourselves."
The pups all looked very excited at this sudden invitation, even Chase, who a moment before was ready to politely deny anything Lily wanted to give them, now wasn't sure if he wanted it or not. But then he noticed Skye acting like Rubble just before breakfast, and decided that he'd have to accept Lily's invite anyway.
Even Ryder seemed as open to the idea. "If we do decide to accept your offer, Lily, when will we go?" he asked.
"I can schedule a flight for tonight," she responded. "That's the time I planned to go back since yesterday."
"Hmm..." Ryder turned to address both the pups and Lily. "I'll talk with Mayor Goodway first and I'll also check in to see how our friends are doing. If everything's okay, then we'll go. Alright?"
The pups all said "Yeah!" in agreement; an exception for Skye, who exclaimed "Yay!" and barked twice.
Ryder then turned to Lily and asked if she could hold off on booking any flights until they confirmed their plans. Lily happily agreed and said, "Okay, Ryder. I won't book any flights until I've got your confirmation. If you're not coming, I'll understand."
"Great," said Ryder. "Thank you for inviting us, Lily. Hopefully, we'll see you again at the Adventure Bay Airport tonight."
Lily waved farewell, and she hung up.
In a short while, at around eight o'clock in the night, Ryder and the pups were seated in the waiting area at Adventure Bay Airport with most of their luggage beside them. There weren't many people that night, except for a family with two children and a gal with blonde hair and large pink headphones. Skye seemed quite fascinated by the headphones and had to be called twice by Ryder to bring her back to reality.
Chase, meanwhile, sat next to Ryder and was looking around for someone. He glanced up at the digital clock in the room, which now displayed the time as 20:26.
"Where is she, Ryder?" asked Chase. "Our flight takes off at nine, and we have to be on the plane 30 minutes before."
Ryder was about to respond when he was interrupted by a familiar voice.
"Hey, guys!" said Lily as she approached them. "I hope I'm not too late."
"Lily!" Ryder greeted her. Skye heard them, turned away from the gal's headphones and barked happily upon seeing the archaeologist.
"Hey, Skye," said Lily cheerfully. "And you guys, too," she said to the others. Chase nodded solemnly, Marshall barked once, and the others greeted her warmly.
Lily sat down on Ryder's unoccupied side and sighed. "I'm very sorry, Ryder," she said as she looked at the clock. "There was a roadblock near the hotel, and I had to take a detour."
"It's alright, Lily," said Ryder. "What matters is you're here with us. And knowing that Adventure Bay will be fine without the PAW Patrol. For a while, of course."
"How long did the mayor give you for France?" asked Lily.
"It didn't matter, she said, as long as we returned home," replied Ryder. "She seemed to think we might want to stay in France!"
They both laughed. "Well, I suppose she would think that way, with the many things France has to offer," said Lily. "I can't wait to go back home."
"Where do you live, Lily?" inquired Ryder.
"Oh, I just live in an apartment in Paris. It's about as close as you can get to the museum where the Excavations is."
"Um, Lily?" It was Skye.
Lily looked down at her. "Yes, Skye?"
"If you don't mind me asking, why didn't you ask for help from Red Nexus?" asked Skye. The other pups looked at her as she said this, as though they had been thinking the same thing. "I mean, other than what you told us, that they would make your mission public."
Lily suddenly became quiet, as though she didn't know what to say. Ryder saw this and added, "If you don't want to tell us, Lily, that's fine, too."
But Lily seemed like she did want to tell. She fidgeted with her hands for a while before she found her voice again. "Even though the Corporation's done a lot for me," she began. "Like help open up the Excavations, I just feel like I need to find the capsule without public assistance."
"But we're public assistance," Marshall noted.
"You're at least people I can trust!" said Lily before realising what she just said.
"Um, what?" asked Rocky.
Just then, a female, monotone voice rang through the room. "Please note: flight to Paris, France will departure in 30 minutes," it said. "Please board the plane now. Thank you."
Lily grabbed her luggage and stood up. "Forget I said that," she said hastily. "Come on. Let's get on the plane."
Skye turned and tossed in her bed, unable to sleep due to the loud roaring of the plane's engine. They weren't that loud, but for her, they were. She ended up facing the window, where she saw the night sky passing by as the plane flew on.
A while ago, Ryder, the pups and Lily had boarded the plane as promised and found there were six rooms, each with two beds. They quickly decided where they would sleep, though there were a few arguments before they finally went into their rooms. Skye and Lily shared a room, which they were both in now. Skye assumed that Lily had already fallen asleep as she was quiet in her bed and had her back turned on the pup. Meanwhile, in her bed, Skye was finding it hard to sleep, not only because of the plane's engines but also because of what Lily had said to them before they ever came on the plane.
What did she mean when she said they were 'people she could trust'? Does that mean there are people who she doesn't trust? Skye tried to think of who those people could be before remembering the question she had asked Lily beforehand. Red Nexus. Could it be? But Lily had been working with the Corporation for a while now; Skye still remembered reading an article about it months ago. Why would Lily not trust them? What would they have against her?
Either way, Skye didn't want to accidentally make her idol uncomfortable again. As she began to drift off, she made a mental note to herself to never ask her about Red Nexus again.
Late that night, Skye woke up suddenly, and as she sat in bed, rubbing her sleepy eyes, she quickly noticed that the bed beside her was unoccupied. Lily had disappeared.
Curiosity building up inside her, Skye groggily got up from her bed and with a bit of difficulty, pushed the door open and made her way through the hallway that connected to the front of the plane, where all the seats were. Skye looked around at the long lines of seats and saw that up at the front, one seat was occupied, as she could see some light echoing from it. Lily, she thought. She quietly crept to the front, and once she was behind the inhabited seat, she got up onto the seat behind it and peered through the gap between the two seats at the front.
Lily's face was illuminated by the light that came from her laptop, which she had opened in front of her. She was completely focused on it, constantly mumbling to herself. Skye saw that she had what looked like an email tab open on the laptop, and Lily was typing and deleting sentences in her email. Skye moved closer to read the words Lily had written in the email. Even though she knew she wasn't supposed to see other people's emails, she had a feeling that this was different. Her suspicions became true as she read the sentences Lily had written:
Flying to Paris, France at the moment... Should I tell them?... I sincerely hope Red Nexus won't do anything to the time capsule... Red Nexus has been strange lately... have you noticed?
As Lily started writing another sentence, Skye fell on the seat on which she had been leaning at the edge to take a moment to think about what she had discovered. She knew Lily had some wild thoughts on Red Nexus; here was the proof. But what was troubling Skye at the moment was why Lily was thinking about Red Nexus in that way. She thought about each of the sentences she had read. She was telling someone about how they were flying to France now, and she asked the anonymous person if she should tell the cockapoo, Ryder and the other pups something; 'them' couldn't have meant anything else. She said she hoped Red Nexus wouldn't do anything to the time capsule... Skye frowned as she thought about this. This sentence made Red Nexus seem like some sort of villain. What would Nexus ever do to the capsule? Was Lily worried they would harm it? And the final sentence... it was all connected. Lily did find Red Nexus suspicious... but of what?
She suddenly heard Lily sigh, and she peeked through the gap again just as Lily sent the email she had written. "She better reply..." Skye heard Lily say in a quiet voice. Realising Lily was probably almost finished with her work, Skye quickly but quietly ran back to the room. She got back into bed and suddenly, she felt more tired than when she woke up, and she fell asleep as soon as her head fell on the pillow. The last words she thought of before everything became black were:
Does Lily hate Red Nexus?
