"Katherine stabbed Stefan." Bonnie stated. Eve tried to make herself more presentable in a downstairs hall, looking in a small, decorative mirror to smooth herself out and just take her hair down from the obviously messy ponytail. Eve, finally accepting she was going to have to accept that she was as put together as she could make herself, turned back towards Bonnie.
"Shame I couldn't have a little chat with her." Eve pouted back to Bonnie. Bonnie folded her arms and glared back at her.
"Yeah, a big shame." Bonnie huffed, irritated with Eve. Eve raised an eyebrow back at her. "She's strong." Bonnie chastised as Eve walked around her, back to the main foyer. They needed to go out to the front. That's where the vampire gang was meeting. Eve wasn't looking forward to seeing Damon...
"I know." Eve muttered back as the two easily snuck around crowds and out the front door. "I've known about her fer nearly a century." Eve muttered lowly as the two stood just outside the front door. Bonnie let out an annoyed huff making Eve roll her eyes.
"What even were you doing upstairs?" Bonnie asked, changing the subject, as Eve began walking down the stairs. Eve paused her steps at the question, turning back around and looking up at the small little witch.
"Nothin'. " Eve stated seriously before she allowed herself to smile and turn around to keep walking. Bonnie let out a small scoffed out laugh. "Bonnie, me dearest, what ever do ya dink I was doin'?" Eve asked as she got to the bottom of the stairs and spun around to watch her walking down the stairs. Bonnie raised an eyebrow back towards her as she walked.
"Making Caroline proud?" Bonnie sassed back. Eve paused, letting her mouth open just a gap before she simply laughed and nodded.
"I mean, yer not wrong." Eve laughed as Bonnie, despite wanting to continue being judgmental, Eve could tell it killed her, smiled back at Eve. "She'd be a little disappointed dat it didn't go all de way, but I have some self control." Eve chastised back, pointing a finger back at Bonnie accusingly. Bonnie stared back at her, like she didn't believe her. Eve rolled her eyes back and nudged the girl's shoulder. "Trust me, witchy, dat man would have more bite marks." Eve teased, watching the horror take over Bonnie's expression. Eve bit her teeth together only making Bonnie let out an annoyed huff. Eve saw the blush start to creep across Bonnie's cheeks and let herself laugh once more.
"You know, the more you talk, the more I understand why you and Caroline are friends." Bonnie sassed back, folding her arms and giving a small smile back at Eve. Eve felt her heart warm just a little bit more.
"Finally admittin' Caroline and I are friends den?" Eve asked, playfully wiggling her eyebrows back at Bonnie. Bonnie took in a deep breath and nodded. Eve dramatically clutched her chest. Bonnie rolled her eyes with a small smile.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah, yuck it up." Bonnie snarked, shaking her head. Eve giggled, watching Bonnie's attention leave her and fall on something behind her. She waved to indicate to someone that they should come to her. Eve turned around to see what Bonnie was waving to, still reeling from having a genuinely nice moment with the usually uppity witch. Her smile slowly faded as she saw Damon walking towards the two...just Damon. Where was Stefan and Elena? Probably not dead with how casual Damon was walking towards the two...or maybe he was and he shut off his emotions. Hmm. "Damon." Bonnie said, looking around, probably also looking for Stefan and probably Elena. "Where's-" Bonnie started before Damon raised his hand to stop her from talking.
"Safe and sound and not dead." Damon explained quickly. Bonnie let out a small, relieved sigh. "Katherine ran off, Stefan is all healed up and Elena is with Jenna and Jeremy." Damon continued his explanation, his eyes only drifting towards Eve for a moment. Eve felt her heart clench uncomfortably tight. A sudden wave of guilt also decided to land in her stomach. Eve quickly brushed it off. What did she have to be guilty about? Damon and her were just friends...Just friends… "Evelyn, can I talk to you?" Damon asked, now placing his full attention back to Eve, making Eve's stomach flip. "Alone." Damon sassed, looking back over towards Bonnie. Bonnie glanced over at Eve for a moment. A small warmth filled Eve's chest as she simply nodded back to Bonnie. Bonnie let out a small sigh, looking at the two before heading back inside.
"So…" Eve began, feeling her heart beat uncomfortably quick when her attention came back to Damon. "What's up?" Eve asked, popping the 'p' in 'up'. Damon stared at her for a moment, only to turn and look across the large lawn.
"Walk with me?" Damon asked, offering his arm. Eve hesitated, looking Damon up and down quizzically before reluctantly taking his arm. Damon didn't say anything as the two began walking on the edge of the Lockwoods' front yard. "It's been weird…" Damon began, looking ahead of him as the two walked. Eve subconsciously nodded. "Having to talk with the Sheriff and Carol Lockwood about the Mayor...seeing as I saw the guy get his neck snapped in the basement where they were lighting up and killing all of the vampires in town.." Damon continued, making Eve stop herself from nodding...Not what she expected him to say… "Not like I can just say 'at least he didn't suffer in the fire', because then I would get the whole 'how do you know that' conversation and I'm pretty sure Liz isn't ready for that." Damon continued talking, only making Eve more and more nervous. He wanted to talk with her alone...and he was just chatting...like...friends. "I mean, I can only imagine what happened when you passed out in front of her from the Gilbert device." Damon chuckled casually. Eve couldn't help the snort that left her nose. Damon smiled down at her. Eve nearly growled at how her heart still fluttered.
"Well, she said 'fock' twice once me ears stopped bleedin'." Eve explained. Damon laughed as the two continued walking straight, off the Lockwoods' front yard and into the woods.
"How did you get yourself out of that one?" Damon asked through a chuckle.
"Carol Lockwood decided ta come runnin' in before I could say anythin' and yelled about her husband gettin' taken." Eve snickered. "Honestly, I didn't have a clue what I was goin' ta say ta her." Eve laughed, holding up her dress as the two continued walking more into the woods. "Where are we goin'?" Eve asked, looking around the woods. Some familiarity tried to force its way under her skin, but all she could think about was Damon...Eve nearly scoffed at herself.
"We aren't there yet, so just be patient." Damon chastised, letting go of her arm and walking a little ahead of her. Eve rolled her eyes as he stepped over a fallen tree. Damon turned back around and offered his hand once more. "Need me to carry you?" Damon asked, sounding only a little sarcastic. Eve stared back at him...a conversation from...decades ago came up in her memories.
"I'm quite capable." Eve sassed back, stepping over the tree. Her heel caught a crack in the tree. Eve nearly tripped, but Damon was quick to catch her. Damon smirked back down at her.
"You sure about that?" Damon asked as Eve pulled her heel from the tree and placed it down to steady herself.
"Quite." Eve snapped back, annoyed at the blush that ran across her face. Eve quickly walked ahead of Damon and through a clearing. And then Eve froze. In the middle of the opening in the woods...was a demolished foundation of a very old house...Eve's house. Eve felt her heart begin to beat quickly. What did Damon want to talk about? Was this intentional? Did he know that her home was here? Eve turned back around to Damon.
Damon looked...nervous. Eve felt her anxiety kick in as he walked around her and towards the rubble. Crickets were beginning to chirp with the sun beginning to go down. The sound of the wake was quiet, but not silent. Eve looked around the clearing and felt her heart slowly calm down. Despite all of the bad memories she had inside of the house, there were still good memories. Warm, summer days, still in the thick of the woods shading off the front yard. Eve could see a small patch of grass that was healthier looking than the rest in the back of the rubble...That was where her mother used to hang laundry...Eve felt her feet move around the torn down home into places that memories took over. Seamus never really liked the house...and neither did Eve, but the two were content outside...reading or just enjoying the natural air...
"I'm sorry." Damon said softly. Eve blinked, pulling herself from her old memories and back to the present. "I'm...sorry for everything shitty I've ever done...to you." Damon said, standing near a corner of the rubble. Eve's hand retracted from the taller piece of foundation she hadn't realized she had been touching. She wasn't far from him as she brushed her hands together. "I mean, the list goes on...but recently it's been blowing up." Damon continued, looking at the rubble of a long gone house. "I'm sorry for what I said in the alley when I was mad." Damon started, looking back up at Eve. "I'm sorry for making you feel like you're only my friend when I'm bored." Damon continued...looking so sincere as he spoke. Eve felt herself falling for it all. "I'm sorry if you've felt like that for all of our friendship or if it just came up recently, because I assure you, Evelyn, that you aren't just my friend when I'm bored." Damon said, slowly walking around the rubble and over to Eve. Eve blinked back at him, feeling her heart begin to flutter. "You're the only friend I've ever had...and I don't want to lose that because I'm...stupid." Damon said, making Eve let out a small laugh. "You're my best friend, Evie." Damon said, sounding so soft. Eve swallowed, staring at him.
"And?" Eve said, hoping he got to the part she wanted him to. The part where he apologized for thinking he could be with Elena, thinking he could be with Katherine and thinking that Eve would be okay with it. Damon froze, looking a little confused. Eve felt her heart beginning to harden, the longer Damon remained still.
"I...love you?" Damon asked, still looking confused at what Eve wanted. Eve let out a long sigh, watching Damon's expression slowly change to confused to concerned. "I...I don't know what else you want." Damon stated seriously, now just standing a few feet from Eve. Eve folded her arms and just stared. "Oh, come on, throw a guy a bone here, I said I'm sorry." Damon said in a slightly whiny voice. Eve bit her tongue, closed her eyes and let out a sharp sigh.
"I'm not draggin' dis out Day." Eve muttered lowly, much to Damon's obvious dismay. "Ya shouldn't be sorry fer who ya are...who ya care fer." Eve explained...barely. Damon blinked once before he continued looking confused...and Eve let herself roll her eyes and drop her arms back to her side. "Ya understand?" Eve tried once more, trying to tell him what he was missing without telling him. She was tired of holding his hand through an apology...this was one of his better ones, but he was missing the big Katherine / Elena dilemma. Damon stood still, slowly getting more and more frustrated with Eve's lack of communication. Eve let out a small puff and turned around to leave the stupid opening. It was suddenly becoming claustrophobic in the woods.
"I miss you." Damon snapped, making Eve stop in her tracks. "I miss you despite having a crush on Elena, despite still being desperately in love with Katherine, despite all the shitty things that have happened between us, I miss you, Evelyn." Damon continued, sounding more and more irritated as he spoke. Eve let herself chuckle bitterly. So...she had to piss Damon off to get him to where she wanted him.
"And ya dink I don't miss ya?!" Eve snapped, suddenly flittering in front of him. "Aye, I'm pissed ya have feelin's fer Elena. Aye, I'm pissed ya still love Katherine. And aye, I'm pissed about de rest of de shit dat has happened between us." Eve reiterated, much to Damon's angry, yet confused look. "But I'm more upset dat ya have it in yer head dat ya dink ya can change any of it!" Eve snapped, getting to her point. "Ya hate Katherine, except ya don't really hate her! Ya still dink dere's a chance! Ya dink dere's a chance with Elena, despite her being with Stefan. And fer whatever reason, ya still dink dat Katherine is in love with ya!" Eve snapped, letting all of her anger in the past few days boil over. Damon's once confused look quickly changed to simply angry. A dark chuckle left his mouth as he opened it to say something, but Eve quickly cut him off. "I swear ta fockin' God, Damon, if ya say dat dere's a chance, dat Katherine does still love ya, I will find a stick and stake ya." Eve growled lowly, glaring back up at the man in front of her. Damon blinked before he took a step back and let out a bitter laugh before pointing at her.
"You know, you're acting pretty high and mighty for someone who shacked up with that Lockwood at his brother's wake." Damon snapped. Despite the smile on his face, Eve knew he was pissed. Eve's brows flew up at his accusation before she let herself laugh, Damon continued. "Yeah, go ahead and say you didn't. I saw how you two were acting." Damon said with a little chuckle in his voice, despite the anger he had in his eyes.
"And why would dat upset ya?" Eve asked with a laugh before staring back at him, watching as he began pacing. "Why…" Eve began, looking at her feet, letting herself chuckle lowly before looking back up at Damon. "Why would ya be a factor in me sex life." Eve stated slowly, letting each word hit Damon like daggers. Damon froze for only a moment before Eve could tell the anger was overwhelming him.
"Because I'm in love with-" Eve suddenly felt her stomach flip as Damon stomped up to her, nearly yelling his sentence, but stopping himself. Eve watched his chest rise and fall for a second.
"With who, Damon? Katherine? Elena?" Eve asked bitterly, feeling the words sting her heart more than she knew it would hurt his. "Damon." Eve stated, looking Damon in his eyes, freezing them both in their place. "I just...wanted ta be de one ya picked." Eve said, feeling her heart clench and a lump form in her throat. "Damon...yer me best friend." Eve said, watching as the anger in Damon's eyes quickly subside as Eve grabbed hold of his hands in her own. "But I need ta know de truth..." Eve said softly, simply looking up at Damon. Damon stared back down at her, his blue eyes engulfing her...for a moment; peace. But that peaceful moment only lasted a second as something in Damon clicked...and Eve knew it. Eve sighed and took a step back, letting go of Damon's hands.
It's always going to be her.
It's never going to be me.
"What happens now?" Damon asked in a near whisper, looking heartbroken.
"Find yer truth." Eve said softly back, feeling her heart crack even more.
"Will I get an 'I told you so' once I do?" Damon asked lightly. Eve let herself chuckle, despite feeling her lip start to quiver.
"Yeah...Damon." Eve said with a small nod, looking back over at him. The two weren't physically far apart, but in that moment, it felt like they were lightyears away. How could she tell him that this door was closed? With so many things left unsaid…Eve took in a deep breath as she flittered back to the edge of the woods, just a few feet from the Lockwoods' front yard. She was going to leave this town as soon as Caroline was out of the hospital. And cut her ties with everyone...Damon Salvatore included…
I love you.
Why was that such a hard sentence to say? Sure, he hadn't said it in over 145 years, and maybe he had never said it to someone who could actually love him back...Damon shook his head as he walked to the front of the Lockwoods' mansion. He knew Bonnie would be there...and that his Evie would be there. As he got closer to the front steps, his heart fluttered as he saw the back of her head. Bonnie waved him over, looking a little confused to just see him and not Stefan and Elena. Elena had been the one to say that they would meet in front of the Lockwoods for a little vampire meeting. Damon felt his heart leap in his chest as Eve finally turned. Damon nearly stopped as he looked at Eve. The soft, setting sun was making her look so...so shiny and golden. Her hair, a little messier than normal, shined just a little more red in the light. Her pale skin really reflected the many freckles that scattered across her face and down her chest. Damon, luckily, kept walking, despite his heart nearly beating out of his chest. Damon could see the smile on Eve's face slowly fade as he walked up and in just a second, he remembered all the shitty things that had happened...She looked a little confused as well as he approached by himself. Whatever. This was actually perfect. He wanted to talk with her.
"Damon." Bonnie stated as he walked closer to the two. "Where's-" Bonnie got out before Damon raised his hand to stop her question.
"Safe and sound and not dead." Damon explained quickly, as to not upset the little witch anymore. Bonnie let out a relieved sigh. "Katherine ran off, Stefan is all healed up and Elena is with Jenna and Jeremy." Damon continued his explanation. Finally, he let his eyes drift over to Eve. His heart fluttered in his chest...maybe from being so close to the woman...or maybe from the fact that she smelled a little off… "Evelyn, can I talk to you?" Damon asked, ignoring the smell, as to not upset himself that another man had been close enough to… "Alone." Damon sassed back up towards Bonnie. Bonnie paused for a moment, looking over to Eve. Damon almost laughed. Somehow...somehow his little Evie had gotten into the good graces of the witch. Eve nodded her head. Bonnie looked between the two, suspiciously before she walked back up to the Lockwoods' mansion. A moment passed before Eve turned her attention back towards Damon.
"So…" Eve began, she switched her weight to her left foot...nervous. "What's up?" Eve asked, popping the 'p' in 'up'. Damon forced himself not to scoop the woman up in his arms and hug her...twirl her in a circle...kiss her. Damon turned to look across the front yard. Her house was close by...hmm.
"Walk with me?" Damon asked, barely looking at the woman as he offered his arm. Damon didn't even bother looking back at the woman, but he knew she took his arm reluctantly. Damon kept his eyes forward as he began leading her on the edge of the lawn. "It's been weird…" Damon started, feeling his heart beat uncontrollably quick in his chest. He needed to make small talk. He had a much more serious conversation in mind and needed to calm himself down. "Having to talk with the Sheriff and Carol Lockwood about the Mayor." Damon said, noticing in the corner of his eyes that Eve was nodding. "Seeing as I saw the guy get his neck snapped in the basement where they were lighting up and killing all of the vampires in town." Damon continued. Eve slowly stopped nodding. Damon forced the laugh he felt coming up at her actions. "Not like I can just say 'at least he didn't suffer in the fire', because then I would get the whole 'how do you know that' conversation and I'm pretty sure Liz isn't ready for that." Damon felt himself ramble out...this casual conversation wasn't doing anything to steady his nerves any… "I mean, I can only imagine what happened when you passed out in front of her from the Gilbert device." Damon let himself chuckle out. Real casual...Damon felt his heart flutter as he heard Eve snort out. Damon allowed himself to look down and smile at her.
"Well, she said 'fuck' twice once I could hear." Eve explained calmly. Damon couldn't help the laugh that escaped him as the two continued walking off of the Lockwoods' land and into the woods.
"How did you get yourself out of that one?" Damon asked through a chuckle, only casually looking down at the woman.
"Carol Lockwood decided ta come runnin' in before I could say anythin' and yelled about her husband gettin' taken." Eve snickered softly. "Honestly, I didn't have a clue what I was goin' ta say ta her." Eve laughed as she grabbed and pulled her dress tighter to her to keep herself from getting caught on anything. "Where are we goin'?" Eve asked, looking around the woods. Damon bit the inside of his cheek.
"We aren't there yet, so just be patient." Damon chastised the woman, letting go of her arm and walking a little ahead of her. He had to make sure they were going the right way...Not like he would really know, but he had to take a step away from the woman. Damon stepped over a fallen tree before turning back around and offering his hand to her. "Need me to carry you?" Damon asked, feeling like his heart was in his throat as he snarked at her. Eve looked back at him, slowly squinting, not helping his rapid heartbeat by any means.
"I'm quite capable." Eve sassed back, stepping over the tree. Damon watched as her heel cough in a crack. He didn't even hesitate as he grabbed her to keep her from falling. Damon could barely keep himself from laughing.
"You sure about that?" Damon asked as Eve pulled her heel from the tree and placed it down to steady herself.
"Quite." Eve snapped back, obviously annoyed at the blush that ran across her face. Damon cherished it. Eve quickly walked ahead of him before freezing. Damon was quick to be by her side. A clearing. Not just any clearing, the clearing where her old house was torn down...Eve turned and looked back at Damon.
Damon felt his stomach flip. This was it. Nostalgia was always a bitch, but Damon was going to make it his bitch. Nostalgia was going to help him win his friend back. Damon walked around Eve, walking closer to the rubble in front of them. It was strange to see her house as simple, broken stones and a foundation...Damon stood at the corner of the rubble, looking back to Eve and...stopping to watch her.
Her eyes sparkled as she looked around the opening. As if she was in a trance of memories, she walked slowly up towards the rubble house and looked around. Damon stood in silence, simply watching. As if he could tell what she was going through...At least he could see her shoulders relax...see a small spark of joy from a simple memory, probably about her brother...Damon felt himself slowly smile as he looked at the woman as she re-lived small, nice memories. Say you're sorry. Damon took in a small breath as she walked over to a taller part of the torn down home and touched it gently.
"I'm sorry." Damon said aloud softly, watching Eve blink and pull herself back to reality. "I'm...sorry for everything shitty I've ever done...to you." Damon continued, a little louder, watching as her hand pulled away from the foundation. "I mean, the list goes on…" Damon muttered. "But recently, it's been blowing up." Damon said, turning his attention to the rubble of the house. "I'm sorry for what I said in the alley when I was mad." Damon felt himself flinch before he looked back up to Eve. "I'm sorry for making you feel like you're only my friend when I'm bored." Damon said, feeling his heart clench in his chest at even the idea that he had made her feel so poorly… "I'm sorry if you've felt like that for all of our friendship or if it just came up recently, because I assure you, Evelyn, that you aren't just my friend when I'm bored." Damon said, feeling her pull against him and slowly walking around the corner of the house and over to Eve. Eve blinked quickly back up at him. "You're the only friend I've ever had...and I don't want to lose that because I'm...stupid." Damon muttered, his heart stopping from being tight as he heard Eve laugh softly back at him. "You're my best friend, Evie." Damon explained gently, forcing his hand to stay by his side, despite just wanting to touch her...He missed her. Eve swallowed before speaking.
"And?" Eve said softly. Damon froze, feeling himself become confused. You love her.
"I...love you?" Damon asked, still looking confused at what Eve wanted. It felt disingenuous... Eve let out a long sigh. Fuck. What did she want? Damon's heart began to beat in his ears as he tried to think of what else she wanted but came up blank. "I...I don't know what else you want." Damon stammered, standing close to Eve but feeling far from her...Eve folded her arms and continued to stare at him. "Oh, come on, throw a guy a bone here, I said I'm sorry." Damon said in a slightly whiny voice, trying to pull more of what she wanted. She usually helped him with his apologies...but maybe she didn't want to help with this one...No. Eve simply closed her eyes and let out a sharp sigh. Damon felt as if she had just stabbed him.
"I'm not draggin' dis out Day." Eve muttered, making Damon's heart hammer in his chest. He was confused. "Ya shouldnt' be sorry fer who ya are...who ya care fer." Eve continued. Damon blinked...Katherine. Elena. Are you that stupid. "Ya understand?" Eve tried once more, sounding so genuine as she tried to make Damon spit out the words she wanted. Damon knew what she wanted but felt his stomach drop. Frustration started building up. He didn't want to bring them up right now...not when he was trying to say something besides the fact that he was sorry...Love. Eve let out a small puff before turning to leave the opening.
"I miss you." Damon snapped making Eve stop her trek back through the woods. He didn't mean to sound so aggressive, but now he couldn't stop himself. "I miss you despite having a crush on Elena, despite still being desperately in love with Katherine, despite all of the shitty things that have happened between us…" Damon continued, feeling his anger slowly slip out. This was not what he wanted...he didn't want to fight with this woman. He wanted to hug her and never let go. He wanted to just sit in the woods in silence and not feel like something was left unsaid. He wanted to tell her he loved… "I miss you, Evelyn." Damon said, feeling his irritation slip out. Damon heard Eve chuckle bitterly to herself. Damon nearly sighed...he didn't want this.
"And ya dink I don't miss ya?!" Eve snapped, suddenly in front of him from flittering. "Aye, I'm pissed ya have feelin's fer Elena." Eve started. "Aye, I'm pissed ya still love Katherine." Eve growled. "And aye, I'm pissed about de rest of de shit dat has happened between us." Eve continued. Damon felt himself become more angry as she continued to snap. "But I'm more upset dat ya have it in yer head dat ya dink ya can change any of it!" Eve hissed. "Ya hate Katherine, except ya don't really hate her! Ya still dink dere's a change! Ya dink dere's a chance with Elena, despite her being with Stefan. And fer whatever reason, ya still dink dat Katherine is in love with ya!" Eve nearly screamed at him. Damon felt his fists clench. Eve was close enough that he could better see her...Hair, a mess...and now all he could smell was a mix of her and a large mix of him. Damon let himself chuckle, ready to snap back at her, but she quickly cut him off. "I swear ta fockin' God, Damon, if ya say dat dere's a chance...dat Katherine does still love ya, I will find a stick and stake ya." Eve growled lowly, glaring back up at the man. Damon was mad...pissed. This was not how he wanted this conversation to go.
"You know, you're acting pretty high and mighty for someone who shacked up with that Lockwood at his brother's wake." Damon snapped, an angry smile on his face. Fuck. No. Stop. He didn't want to be mad and do this to her. Eve's eyebrows flew up at his statement and laughed. Stop stop stop. "Yeah, go ahead and say you didn't. I saw how you two were acting." Damon chuckled. Why was he doing this...why was he being such an incredible ass? You're jealous, you idiot.
"And why would dat upset ya?" Eve asked with a bitter laugh. Damon felt his feet begin to make him pace. "Why…" Eve started, looking at her feet before looking back up to Damon with a dark chuckle. "Why would ya be a factor in me sex life." Eve stated slowly. Damon felt his heart nearly stop at her statement...he stopped. Why do you think? It's…
"Because I'm in love with-" Damon snapped, prowling up to her, nearly yelling but forcing himself to stop. It wasn't supposed to go like this...
"With who, Damon? Katherine? Elena?" Eve asked, making Damon bite his tongue. It hurts it hurts it hurts… "Damon." Eve stated softly, looking Damon in his eyes making them both freeze...just for a moment. "I just...wanted ta be de one ya picked." Eve said in a near whisper. No no no… "Damon...yer me best friend." Eve said, grabbing hold of his hands and now making his full attention stay on his Evie...his anger was now gone as hurt took over. "But I need ta know de truth." Eve said, looking up at Damon with her big, beautiful emerald colored eyes. Damon looked back down at her, her words circling in his mind...and for whatever reason, maybe he loved the pain he caused himself...maybe he really did believe he didn't deserve to be happy...because he knew he had to make sure...He had to make sure Katherine had loved him...had to make sure Elena and him never had a chance...Eve sighed and took a step back, letting go of Damon's hands.
You don't deserve to be happy.
You don't deserve her.
"What happens now?" Damon asked in a near whisper, feeling his heart nearly turn to dust.
"Find yer truth." Eve said softly back, tears beginning to form in her eyes.
"Will I get an 'I told you so' once I do?" Damon asked lightly, feeling as if he was going to be sick. Eve laughed, despite her lip beginning to quiver.
"Yeah...Damon." Eve said with a small nod, looking back up at him...and then she was gone.
Damon knelt down before his legs could give out. Damon watched small droplets of water hit the ground...Damon rubbed his face, ignoring the rumbling in his chest. Time to do the human thing...pretend to shut it off. Oh how easy it would be to actually shut it off...You deserve this. You don't deserve to not feel.
Liquor, liquor, liquor. Damon needed something far stronger than liquor. A good stake to the heart, maybe...probably less painful...Damon sighed as he walked through the front door of the Boarding house. Damon threw his jacket onto the chair next to the end table full of liquor. Damon contemplated pouring a glass but decided against it and just grabbed the full bottle and began walking away. But then he stopped. Katherine.
"Very brave of you to come here." Damon muttered lowly, looking back to the couch to see Katherine sitting ever so nonchalantly.
"I wanted to say goodbye." Katherine said, looking more serious than normal...Yeah okay.
"Leaving so soon?" Damon asked.
"I know where I'm not wanted." Katherine said, mocking sadness.
"Don't pout." Damon muttered, walking towards her. "It's not attractive on a woman your age." Damon muttered, raising his glass to her and drinking a long drink before turning back around to walk away.
"Ouch." Katherine scoffed. "What, no goodbye kiss?" Katherine asked, flittering in front of Damon. Damon rolled his eyes.
"Why don't I kill you instead?" Damon asked, his heart slightly aching at Eve's words. Killing Katherine wouldn't be finding his truth. Seeing her again made him feel like he already did. "What are you doing here?" Damon asked, irritation seeping into his skin as he watched her brighten at his curiosity.
"Nostalgia, curiosity, etcetera." Katherine shrugged. Damon squinted back at her, taking another drink of his bottle of bourbon.
"I'm better at the enigmatic one-liners, Katherine." Damon muttered. "What are you up to?" Damon asked, letting his stupid curiosity get the better of him.
"Trust me Damon, when I'm up to something, you'll know it." Katherine muttered back. "Come on. Kiss me. Or kill me." Katherine stated, walking up closer to Damon. "Which will it be, Damon?" Katherine asked, dangerously close to him. Damon felt his heart flutter ever so slightly. Killing her would be easy… "Because I don't think killing me will help you...find your truth." Katherine said, nearly against his lips. Damon froze before quickly stepping back.
"What...what did you say?" Damon asked, slightly reeling from the sudden, screeching halt his heart had taken. Katherine raised an eyebrow back at him.
"Kiss me or kill me." Katherine retorted back casually. But Damon shook his head.
"No, you said 'find your truth'." Damon replied pointedly back at her. Katherine rolled her eyes.
"Come on, me explaining why I said it would make you question which you would rather do." Katherine scowled back. Damon felt his brows furrow together. She was making it easier for him to just rip her heart out… "Oh, come on…" Katherine whined, taking a step back towards him. "So I heard your little apology to your little...friend in the woods. So what." Katherine scowled as she spoke. "Didn't sound like she accepted your apology anyway." Katherine shrugged. "It really just sounded like she gave you permission to go off and try to find out some truths." Katherine said with a bounce in her step as she was now back to where she had started; dangerously close to Damon. "Now, which will it be, Damon?" Katherine asked lowly. "We both know that you're only capable of one." Katherine growled. Damon scowled and turned away from her. In a flash, Katherine slammed him to the ground and laid on top of him. "My sweet, innocent Damon." Katherine purred, letting her hands crawl up and down his chest. Damon only took a second before he slammed her on her back and grabbed hold of her throat.
Why hesitate, you already fucked it up with her.
Find yer truth.
Damon's mind went blank after feeling his heart clench at her words slipping from the dark where he had tried to bury them. Damon soon found himself kissing Katherine...roughly.
"That's more like it." Katherine muttered aloud as the two continued to kiss...only for a moment before Katherine grabbed him and forced him against the wall. Katherine took little time in ripping his shirt open and touching him...and yet it felt hollow.
Damon wasn't going to let his stupid dark mind take him eleswhere as he ripped Katherine's tank top. He needed this type of physical touch. Damon shoved books off of the table next to them and pushed Katherine down onto the table. As he began to kiss her neck, a book grabbed his attention. Stop paying attention to books, you idiot. Damon ignored his pestering mind and focused on the title. The Wizard of Oz. Damon nearly growled to himself. Evie.
"Okay...wait…" Damon got out breathaly as he paused their whole ordeal. "Brief pause." Damon muttered, letting himself breathe for a second. Katherine let out a small grumble and pushed him off of her and stood up and shoved him back from her. "I have a question. "Damon said, trying to catch his breath as Katherine stared back at him irritatedly. "Answer it and it's back to fireworks and rockets red glare." Damon said with a nervous laugh as Katherine continued to just stare at him. "Answer it right and I'll forget the last 145 years that I've spent missing you." Damon said, letting his voice crack as he spoke...this was his truth. This is what he needed. "I'll forget...how much I loved you, I'll forget everything and we can start over." Damon said, feeling his heart flutter as he looked up at Katherine...and he felt… "This could be our defining moment because we have the time. That's the beauty of eternity." Damon let himself chuckle ever so slightly as he saw...the blank expression on Katherine's face. Even as he walked up to her, he felt his heart in his throat. Even as he went to caress her face, he felt the pause that made his heart nearly shatter. "I just need the truth, just once." Damon begged softly...and Katherine put her hand up.
"Stop." Katherine stated seriously...finally, some emotion on her face. "I already know your question and its answer." Katherine said, staring at Damon with her honey brown colored eyes. Damon allowed himself to stroke her face… "The truth is…" Katherine paused only for a moment as she slowly began shaking her head. "I've never loved you." Katherine stated. "It was always Stefan." Katherine continued, pulling Damon's hand from her face. It was always Stefan. Katherine said nothing else as she walked around him and out of the house. Damon stood, frozen in his spot, letting each emotion he felt pass over him like knives.
Anger, hurt, sadness, heartbreak, and a sudden realization. This is what she wanted apologized for. Damon allowed himself to fall back onto the couch. She didn't want an apology for being a shithead of a friend...she wanted an apology for his stupid ass behavior when it came to Katherine. When it came to falling for Elena, as little as he felt about it...She wanted an apology for how he had been making her feel for God knows how long...The two had been through so much...how long had she felt like that...It made sense now why she wasn't dealing with his shit...She could handle Katherine, but now Elena? A literal doppelganger of Katherine, but nicer? No wonder she was pissed. And now Damon was pissed too...at himself. He needed a lot more than just his little bottle of bourbon.
Why was he at Elena's house? Why was he sitting in Elena's room? Why was he asking himself stupid questions. Find your truth. He kind of expected it to take a little longer for him to prepare himself for Elena, but that's what tons of liquor do. Make a person brave enough to do something horribly stupid. He was so used to doing horribly stupid things with Eve. Ugh. He missed her. Elena walked out of her bathroom and gasped.
"Oh God, you scared me." Elena chastised as she walked past him.
"Just doing my part in the neighborhood watch." Damon grumbled. Stupid. You're so stupid. The more he thought about it, he could have sworn that his inner voice had an Irish lilt.
"Thanks. For, um, looking out for us. For me." Elena thanked hesitantly. Damon only shrugged.
"That's me, your trusty bodyguard. Calm in a crisis." Damon grumbled back. Elena paused in whatever she was doing to look back at him. Concerned. Damon nearly growled.
"Have you been drinking?" Elena asked. Damon looked up at her and pursed his lips before showing her with his finger and thumb that he had only been drinking a little. Elena let out a sigh. "And you're upset. That's not a good combination." Elena chastised gently. Always looking concerned.
"I'm not upset." Damon muttered. Yes you are. Damon rolled his eyes at himself. "Upset is an emotion specific to those who care." Damon grumbled. This time, he could almost hear her scoff in his mind.
"I take it that you and Eve haven't made up then." Elena said, folding her arms. Damon glared back up at her. Always so judgy, that one... "Why not? What's stopping you? You both are like, soulmates." Elena huffed, annoyed with him. Damon felt his chest hurt. Not what he wanted to hear as he sat in her bed, here to 'find his truth'. Ughhh.
"Is it really so surprising that I would think you would kiss me?" Damon asked, coming off softer than he meant to. Elena looked back down at him with her stupidly soft puppy dog eyes.
"Trust me, Damon…" Elena began, sitting beside him, giving off her usual, concerned vibe. Damon groaned. "Now, just listen, hear me out." Elena chastised, pointing a finger at him accusingly. Damon rolled his eyes before looking up at her. "I love Stefan." Elena stated firmly. Damon sighed and looked back down to the ground. "And you love Eve." Elena continued, making Damon's heart ache. "There's a reason you thought you kissed me on the cheek only…" Elena explained. "The Damon I first met when you and Stefan came to Mystic Falls was…" Elena trailed off for a moment...and another. Damon raised an eyebrow to look back up at her. Elena continued to remain silent, as if she were thinking. Damon gestured in a circle, to get her to continue. "I'm trying to be nice." Elena sassed. Damon let out a snort, letting himself fall back onto her bed. "You were...okay, you were a giant ass." Elena stated, twisting her body to better talk to him. Damon chuckled.
"Couldn't think of anything nice, huh?" Damon asked, not even bothering to look up at her. Elena gave a sympathetic smile back. Damon continued staring at her ceiling.
"Look, my point is that ever since Eve showed up to help you with your little Katherine meltdown," Elena began, ignoring the flinch Damon gave back at the comment. "You've been a lot less of an ass." Elena shrugged, standing up from where she sat and began moving about her room again.
"Oh, and you think that's entirely because of-" Damon muttered out.
"Because of Eve? Yes." Elena cut Damon off before he could continue. "I think the two of you are close. Like, closer than close." Elena stated seriously, standing in front of her vanity mirror and fumbling around with something. Damon didn't care. He was drunk and tired and missed his best friend. "You showed up at like seven in the morning with five sheep outside of your house for her to go to Miss Mystic with you." Elena snarked back as she walked over to her end table and took off her earrings. "I think whatever it is that happened between you two, you should suck it up and apologize and admit you're in love." Elena said casually. Damons heart began to ache once more. "Because you're not getting that from me." Elena sassed, walking over and sitting at her vanity. Damon let himself snort.
"Not even a little kiss?" Damon asked, sitting back up, a little wobbly from the quick action. Elena turned and raised an eyebrow back at him. Damon continued with a little kissing noises. Elena scoffed, tossing one of her shoes at him. Damon let himself laugh as he threw it on the ground before flittering over and grabbing and tossing Elena back onto her bed. Elena let out a small scream at the quick action before she sat up and glared playfully back at Damon. Suddenly, Jeremy was at the door.
"What's going on?" Jeremy asked, looking worriedly into the room, first looking at Elena as she giggled on her bed and Damon stood by her vanity. Damon turned to the vanity and grabbed a makeup brush before brushing it across his cheeks.
"Oh, you know, just girl things." Damon muttered, looking back at Jeremy, nonchalantly. Jeremy's brow raised as a smile quickly overtook his more serious expression. Damon looked back at Elena who covered her mouth quickly to cover a laugh. Shit. Damon quickly looked back in the mirror and saw a pink blush now across his cheeks. Damon put down the brush and scowled back at Elena. "Aren't you supposed to wash those things?" Damon growled back at Elena as she continued to giggle behind her hand. Damon's heart lightened as he looked back into the mirror. He didn't mind the gentleness on his aching heart. Especially since he planned on coming to see Elena and somehow forcing her to admit she loved him. He liked this outcome better...despite the blush on his cheeks. It wasn't his color. He wondered, just for a moment, if Eve would have laughed.
When Eve got back to the Lockwoods', a lot more people were gone...including her ride. Eve pulled out her phone to see that she had silenced her phone and that she had 2 voicemails and 5 new messages. Eve grumbled as she found a quiet corner to look at her phone from and not seem rude...Then again, she did have a serious heavy petting situation upstairs with the brother who's wake she was at. Eve looked at her text messages first.
Caroline: I S2G if u arnt gtng sum rn…
Caroline: U better be gtn it gud if ur takin this long
Caroline: if u are, kool, but like if u arnt? I m str8 up dyin in hre lol im THAT petty beotchhhh
Lizzy Beth: Answer phone.
Lizzy Beth: Going to see Caroline now. See you in five outside.
Eve snickered at Caroline's texts. What a dramatic ass. A great distraction from...well...not that great a distraction. Her heart ached. She was going to have to say goodbye to these people...Especially Caroline. Eve sighed as she put the phone up to her ear and listened to her voicemails.
"I'm heading out, I tried looking for you but couldn't find you. If you need a ride, just call me." Liz's voicemail said. She was obviously a little annoyed at Eve for not letting her know what was going on. Eve sighed as she deleted the voicemail and put the phone back to her ear to listen to the second one.
Eve looked around and her eyes met Mason's. Mason slowly realized and smiled back over to her. Eve wiggled her fingers at him as a greeting. Mason began walking over to her when she heard the noise again. Eve quickly covered her mouth as she quickly threw her phone away from her ear. But, unfortunately, the damage was done. People looked her way with a good mix of concern, confusion and irritation at the sudden interruption of their grieving? Eve wasn't sure what they looked at her with, but she tried to get the attention away from her as her ears felt as if they were bleeding again from hearing the Gilbert device coming from her phone. Eve felt relieved as the attention very quickly switched from her to Mason, as he let out a sharp hiss of pain. Eve's brows furrowed for only a second. Tyler had been affected by the device's noise as well...When everyone began hovering over Mason, Eve quickly grabbed her phone, despite the blood she knew was running from her ears, she was somehow able to shut off her voicemail. The ringing continued in her ears for a minute longer, just like it had done the other night. When the ringing fully stopped, she turned her attention towards the crowd that had engulfed Mason and quickly nudged her way to the middle.
Mason sat and gave everyone reassuring smiles, despite the speckle of blood that was coming out of his ears. Mason looked around the crowd to better make people believe he was okay before his eyes landed on Eve. He blinked up to her before he smiled and reached his hand out to her. Eve went to grab it to help him up before two or three other people grabbed his hand and arm and pulled him up. Eve took a step back, suddenly feeling awfully claustrophobic in the crowd. It didn't take much to get out of the little circle that had surrounded Mason. Eve stayed back as they slowly dispersed and Mason stood, still giving reassuring smiles and pats on the shoulders to those who tried to keep him in that little circle. Eve subconsciously touched her right ear, feeling a bit of blood begin to trickle down her neck. Eve quickly tried to wipe it up without anyone noticing. Luckily, after Mason and her's little, secret makeout sesh, her hair wasn't up in a ponytail anymore...So, less people seeing her wipe away blood. Eve flinched when someone touched her arm, nearly grabbing and crushing whoever had put their hand on her. Thankfully, she didn't crush the hand that touched her. It was Mason's.
"Baby girl, you okay?" Mason asked lowly, not removing his hand from her arm and Eve trying to lessen her grip on him. Eve nodded, looking a little confused...or, at least, trying to play it off as confused. Mason stared back down at her. Fuck. He didn't believe her. Mason said nothing as he simply pulled her back into the foyer before pulling her upstairs.
"I mean, I know I'm irresistible, but remember what happened last time?" Eve tried to tease. Mason smirked back at her and rolled his eyes.
"A good time?" Mason chuckled playfully. Eve let out her own snicker as he led her to the upstairs bathroom. Eve felt her heart flutter, mostly from nerves at how silent Mason had been throughout his whole pulling her along trip. Mason finally let go of her arm as he nudged her into the bathroom and turned and locked the door.
"Ya doubht people would talk earlier…" Eve muttered sarcastically before he turned around and quickly went up and grabbed her face. Eve's eyes snapped shut as a shaky breath escaped her lungs at the action.
"You heard it then too." Mason muttered, pushing Eve's hair up above her ears. Eve cringed to herself...She didn't want him to know she heard the noise...since apparently vampires and the Lockwoods were the only ones to hear it. Eve sighed softly. No use in denying it then…
"Do ya dink we should check on Tyler? He heard it de other night and crashed his car…" Eve muttered, taking a step around Mason, reaching for the door. Mason quickly grabbed onto Eve's wrist and pulled her back towards him. Eve felt her heart flutter more in subconscious fear than excitement...as much as she'd rather jump this man's bones to keep her mind from going to dark places, trauma and abuse just had to rear their ugly heads into her present day life. Not like nearly 100 years had gone by but….whatever.
"I'll go check on him, but just stay here, okay?" Mason practically ordered. Eve raised an eyebrow before Mason gestured towards the mirror. "You've still got blood coming out of your ears and down your neck." Mason stated as Eve turned and looked at the mirror. Eve grumbled as she pulled her hair back to better see. He was right, the ringing had stopped, but it did a lot more damage than she had thought. "Unless you want to scare those vampire believers." Mason snarked. Eve hoped he didn't see the sudden fear that came and went across her face in the mirror...or that he would assume it was about how she had blood coming out of her ears still…Eve only sighed and nodded, grabbing some toilet paper and began wiping up her neck.
Mason left the bathroom quickly, shutting the door behind him. Eve tried to listen in on where he was going, but her ears were still, slightly ringing. She needed a good drink...Mason was out of the picture for obvious reasons and basically anyone who was at the wake. They probably had vervain in them or were given some...or maybe everyone was clean since all the bad vampires were burned up in the 'electrical fire'. Eve nearly let out a scoff as she turned on the faucet and splashed water on her neck to rid herself of her own blood. Whatever the case, she would need some kind of drink…
Eve sat on the edge of the bathtub, waiting. It had been a little while. Her ears were finally all healed up, but she didn't want to push it with trying to listen in to see where that boy had gone. How hard was it to look for a teenager whose dad just died? He was obviously drinking somewhere...Eve huffed, pulling out her phone. Eve sighed as she looked at the cracked screen. It must have cracked when she tossed the thing...Eve tried going to her messages. Eve sighed. At least she could still see most of her screen...Eve texted Caroline back.
Eve: You better not die you whore.
Eve only waited a minute for the girl to reply.
Caroline: Damn bitch whre u ben?
Caroline: GETTIN SUM?!
Caroline: So prowd 333
Eve snickered at the girl's rapid texting. She must have been bored. Who else would talk to Caroline? Her other friends? Yeah right. Elena was too busy with vampire drama and Bonnie was too busy with witchy vampire drama...Eve nearly laughed at the irony. Eve had her own vampire drama...and yet she was indulging in high school drama. Priorities.
Eve: A lady never tells ;)
Caroline: Ovr t phone atlst. ;***** Cum see me tmrw. Bitch 3
Eve: Will do. Drama ensuites.
Caroline: Cnt wait :OOO 3
Eve chuckled at Caroline. What a fucking dope. Eve loved her. Just then, Eve began hearing yelling from not far from the bathroom. Eve quickly left the bathroom and to where the commotion was happening. Back in the office where earlier Tyler and Jeremy were caught drinking (and Eve had a little fun with Mason), Mason was on top of Tyler.
"Get off me!" Tyler snapped as Mason continued to hold him down. Carol stood close to the couch before she looked back at Eve and quickly walked over to the door.
"Look at me. Look at me!" Mason snapped back, keeping Tyler restrained. "Calm down. Settle down." Mason hissed back at Tyler.
"Oh God." Carol muttered out softly as Tyler finally began to settle down. Carol's hand flew up to keep Eve at arms distance from the...fight going on. Eve wasn't sure what happened and it didn't look like a fight, or at least it didn't feel like a fight. "Are you okay?" Carol asked, turning towards Eve, feeling it was safe to turn her back on the two. Eve blinked back at her before nodding. "Good, good, come with me, just a little ways." Carol said, looking back at the two before leaving the office and ushering Eve back towards the bathroom. "Oh, I'm sorry you had to see that." Carol said, sounding as if she was trying to keep from choking from her emotions. Eve shook her head gently back to her.
"No, it's okay…" Eve said, looking back towards the office. "I only saw de last bit." Eve explained, gently touching Carol's arm, reassuringly. "What happened?" Eve asked softly. Carol let out a shaky breath as she placed her hand on top of Eve's.
"Tyler...he just got mad, I don't know…" Carol stated shakily, staring back at the office. "It's been such a...a stressful time and...Tyler, he's a good boy, he's just, we just lost…" Carol began stuttering and rambling along, her heartbeat rapidly beating as she continued shaking.
"Yer okay, Mrs. Lockwood. Come on, sit down, it'll be okay." Eve tried to reassure the woman as she led her to a chair in the hallway. "I can't imagine what yer goin' drough." Eve said softly, watching the woman sit down, still trying her best to remain calm and composed. Eve could though, she watched her whole family die and then her nephew slowly die from cancer as she remained an immortal vampire.
"Mason...Mason said that you had heard the noise as well." Carol stated, her sudden ruffled features quickly turning to anger, her heart still beating quickly. Eve tried her best not to flinch at the way her tone quickly changed.
"Aye...I did." Eve stated truthfully. Carol knew, she was the one who walked in on Liz screaming at her and accusing her of being a vampire. There was no use in lying to a woman who ingested vervain...plus, it didn't take telepathy to tell where Carol's thoughts were going. Carol simply sighed, covering her face with her hands. Eve blinked down at her, slightly confused on why she wasn't fighting her for not being dead while her husband was…
"Carol." Mason's voice pulled them both back to the office entrance. "Go on to bed. I've got this handled." Mason stated seriously, nodding for Carol to go. Carol looked back at him, concerned before standing up and straightening herself out. Carol looked Eve up and down once before walking around her. Eve watched her leave and walk towards where she assumed the master bedroom was. Assumed; she knew where it was. She had poked her head in earlier. Mason turned around to look back in the office before shutting the door and walking over to Eve. "Got an hour or two?" Mason asked playfully. Eve snorted at his comment and rolled her eyes.
"Ya know, yer very bad at sayin' when ya'll come back." Eve chastised up at the man. Mason squinted down at her before losing the playfulness and looking back towards the office.
"Tyler thought he heard that noise, but he also thought it was just a ringing in his ears." Mason explained, looking back towards Eve. Eve nodded.
"Dat's good." Eve said. Mason sighed, rubbing the back of his neck.
"You said you were part of that secret council my brother was a part of, right?" Mason asked, his voice becoming hushed as he spoke. Eve's brows furrowed...Had she said that? She said she had been part of a council but she couldn't remember if she had said 'secret'... "Well, listen, I overheard some people talking...saying my brother fell down, blood running out of his ears from something...said it was some kind of noise." Mason began, still in a very hushed tone. "I just...I just gotta ask if you had something to do with it…" Mason said, looking as if he didn't want to hear the answer. Eve looked taken back. "Your phone was where that noise was coming from…" Mason explained, looking guilty for even asking...which he should have. Didn't he see the blood coming out of her ears? Eve shook her head.
"No." Eve stated sternly. "I had a voicemail from someone...I guess it was durin' whenever de noise went off. I tried ta play it but ya saw how dat went." Eve explained, slightly annoyed by his question as she gestured towards her ears. Mason sighed and folded his arms.
"Yeah...it's just...It's strange." Mason explained softly, not looking back at Eve. Eve's brows furrowed in confusion. "And, you know, just so we're clear, I don't want any part of the crazy 'secret' council thing, but I do know about it." Mason stated, looking back up Eve. "It just seems suspicious...that's all I'm saying." Mason stated, looking pensive at the idea.
"Well, yer brother wasn't a vampire…" Eve stated casually. Mason shook his head. "Dat was what de noise was fer…" Eve said in a slightly more quiet tone...If anything, Mason probably hadn't ingested vervain...if she needed to compel him, she would. "Still tryin' ta figure out why he was affected…" Eve said, giving off a pensive look. Mason remained silent for a longer moment.
"Stay the night." Mason stated seriously after a long moment of silence. Eve raised an eyebrow back at him. "You know, two brains are better than one." Mason said with a small shrug, trying his best to suppress a smile. Eve slowly smiled back at him. Mason was becoming a very valuable distraction.
