WHOOPS. SORRY ABOUT THAT MY FRIENDS. XOXO to WickedlyMinx for being my savior. Thank you, my friend!
Also editing? never heard of her. But I love you all!
Caroline still hadn't responded to Eve's text about whether or not she was going to the volunteer day, Stefan and Elena were still fake fighting and flirting, and Damon was…avoiding her. Probably because she was up and dressed before 10 and he knew what that meant…apparently. Eve was tired. Each day she just kept hoping for something normal and calm…and each day it wasn't…and that sucked.
Mason had picked her up and Eve could have sworn both the Salvatore brothers were like stereotypical fathers, glaring out the window while peaking through the blinds in disapproval…and Eve felt like a stereotypical teen, letting Mason kiss her and grab her ass in plain view. Sure, maybe it was a little dangerous, but at the same time, it was a lot of fun…
The two grabbed coffee to go and parked at the far end of the park that they were meant to be volunteering at…Surprisingly, neither had their coffee spilled as they had a quick makeout turned steamy car sex. Eve wasn't about to mention the stab wound already being a light scar since he never brought up how the hickies he had left the previous day were gone altogether.
Eve didn't want to even think about whether Mason knew if she was a vampire or not, since she knew he was a werewolf. She never asked either Salvatore's if they figured that out…and she hadn't really been on top of figuring out more about the whole Lockwoods being werewolves fiasco…The only Lockwood she'd been on top of was Mason, and even then, she wasn't really thinking about werewolves.
Eve looked at her phone as Mason drove up to the actual spot he was needed at as Eve sent another text to Caroline.
Eve: Hey, Mason and I are at the park now. Not sure if you're coming out or not, but the sun may do you some good
"Everything alright, baby girl?" Mason asked, putting his hand on Eve's thigh, making her jump a little. She looked back up at him and nodded.
"Yeah. Being friends with a teenager is…something." She grumbled gently, pushing some hair that began falling into her face behind her ear. Mason chuckled.
"Not sure how you do it, baby, I can barely handle my nephew sometimes." Mason smiled and squeezed her thigh. Eve tensed at the action but huffed.
"Imagine if it was a niece." She mumbled and shoved her phone into her pocket. "Alright, strong man, what's in the boxes in the trunk and where can I help carry them?" Eve asked, nodding to the back of the truck. Mason smiled and got out of the car, nodding for her to follow, which she did on her own side and met him at the trunk.
"These boxes are for donation. Carol…Carol had a few things she didn't want to have around anymore." He said solemnly. Eve didn't question him. She only nodded as he opened the hatch and began pulling boxes closer to the edge. "Sure you can handle this, sweetheart?" Mason teased as he handed her a small box. Eve scoffed and rolled her eyes.
"Come on, let me have some more. I'm short but I'm not weak." She chided back at him with a grin. Mason rolled his eyes before glancing over his shoulder with a frown.
"Alright, baby girl, don't hurt yourself now." Mason said, handing her a bigger box and putting the smaller box on top. Eve's brow furrowed momentarily as she couldn't glance around him now with the boxes blocking her view. Eve huffed softly but turned and began walking to the donation pile.
Stefan saw Eve leave and knew it would be his chance to talk with Mason alone…in a public place during the daylight hours. Stefan made his way over to the man. Mason's brows furrowed at seeing him approach.
"Stefan, right?" Mason asked as Stefan leaned against the tailgate of the truck. "The other Salvatore." Stefan could hear the slight bite in his tone.
"The nice one." Stefan added. "The one offering an apology." He said with a smile, but Mason was already shaking his head.
"Not interested." Mason stated. Stefan breathed in deeply.
"Look, my brother acted impulsively." Stefan offered which only made Mason scoff out a laugh.
"You think?" Mason said with a sarcastic smile. Stefan nodded once before testing the waters. If even the mention of Eve got under Damon's skin, maybe the same could be said for Mason.
"If you and Damon keep at each other throats, somebody innocent is going to get hurt and I don't want that." Stefan said, watching as Mason only looked at him. "I don't want to see Eve get hurt and caught in the crossfire of your little feud." Stefan said more blatantly…but Mason didn't seem to react as strongly as he would have liked.
"Eve's a big girl, she can make her own choices." Mason argued with an indifferent shrug. Maybe something else then…
"You have family here so I can imagine you'd want that either. So what do you say we just quit the whole alpha male fighting thing and call a truce?" Stefan offered once more before Mason shook his head.
"I made that same offer to your brother." Mason said with a small chuckle. "He turned it down with a knife." He grumbled back.
"He made a mistake." Stefan brushed off the comment. "I'm here to make sure that neither one of you makes another one." Stefan said with a smile and a reassuring nod. He could not for the life of him see what Eve saw in the man, even if he was just a physical distraction for her…even if she didn't admit to him being such. Mason rolled his eyes at Stefan and picked up a box.
"Tell your brother to watch his back." Mason warned and began walking away. Before he could get too far, Stefan grabbed his arm and stopped him in his tracks.
"Well, I'm guessing that he only has to worry about that during a full moon." Stefan said sharply as Mason turned and glared. "Otherwise you're not as strong, am I right?" Stefan questioned with a small twitch of a smile. "Or you would have killed Damon by now." He added, watching Mason's glare soften only a little as Stefan could tell he hit the nail on the head. "There's one of you. There's two of us. Three if you count Eve who, I can assure you, will turn on you if you even think about hurting Damon." Stefan added making Mason's jaw clench. "I think you're the one that needs to watch his back." He said with a smile. Mason let out a small puff of air from his nose.
"If he comes at me…" Mason warned, but Stefan shook his head and held out his hand in a truce.
"He won't." Stefan said reassuringly. Mason looked down at his hand before obviously reluctantly shaking Stefan's hand and turning to walk where he needed to go.
Eve wouldn't be happy about how he talked with Mason, and at the same time, he knew she would find it absolutely delightful that he threatened someone in broad daylight in public. Stefan felt a small gust of wind behind him and the strong smell of Damon's cologne hit his nose.
"Are we bullying Evie's new boyfriend?" Damon asked curiously.
"No. I was negotiating peace on your behalf." Stefan chided back. Damon clicked his tongue.
"But I don't want peace." Damon complained making Stefan chuckle and roll his eyes.
"Consider it opposite day then." He shrugged. Damon huffed and stepped around him, grabbing hold of his shoulders.
"Stefan, please tell me you don't seriously think a handshake just solved our problem." Damon muttered with a smirk. Stefan rolled his eyes.
"No, actually I think that the first chance Mason Lockwood gets, he's gonna drive a stake through your heart and then through mine," Stefan stated with a stern look as he spoke to Damon. "All because you took it upon yourself to try to kill him because he's hooking up with Eve." Stefan added. Damon's playful attitude immediately dropped and he scowled back at Stefan.
"That wasn't the only reason I stabbed him." Damon grumbled back with a roll of his eyes.
"Yeah, alright, whatever, the point is that you tried to kill him, and now we have yet another problem on our hands." Stefan chastised, patting Damon on his cheek before pushing away from him and walking away.
Eve was bored. This helping people thing was tiresome…and Mason was tense. And Eve hated when Mason was tense because it made her tense. Mostly because his hands would hold onto her a little extra tight and she could feel bruises heal and re-bruise under his fingers. After a moment of peace, she looked up at him as he stared out into the crowd of people under the picnic area where she had seen Liz working. Eve pulled Mason along to talk with Liz.
"Hey Liz!" Eve chirped happily, pulling Liz's attention away from a few kids after she handed them some lemonade. Liz looked around confused before she found Eve and smiled.
"Oh, hi Eve." Liz greeted warmly, glancing at Mason and giving him a semi-polite nod. "Mason." She greeted. Mason snickered and nodded his head.
"Is Caroline here?" Eve asked, looking around to see if she could find the blonde girl. Liz's brows furrowed for a moment before pouring the two cups.
"She's here. Didn't she tell you?" Liz asked with a frown as both Eve and Mason took their cups of lemonade. Eve shook her head.
"She didn't answer any of me texts." Eve said with a frown. Liz nodded and sighed.
"She told me she was in a 'mood' today." Liz muttered, air quoting 'mood' with her fingers. "Maybe she's just upset you've gone back to sleeping at the Salvatore's." Liz gently teased with a small grin. Eve smiled, but felt the slight tightening of Mason's grip on her hip, feeling another bruise begin to form.
"Oh please, you miss me too." Eve sassed back with a grin, which made Liz smile.
"Well, of course I do!" Liz exclaimed with a laugh. "I find myself reprimanding Caroline, but calling her Eve." Liz explained with a smile and a shake of her head. Mason slowly began to relax at the lighthearted conversation as his grip finally loosened.
"Your coffee supply is probably happy I'm gone though." Eve snickered and Liz nodded.
"Even then, I think I began to buy excess and now it's just sitting there…if you do decide to come back and stay." Liz added softly. It sounded like a little bit of a joke, but Eve could see the way her eyes softened and Eve felt her own heart warm.
"I'll keep that in mind, Ma." Eve said back with a gentle smile before her heart stuttered at the realization of what she had accidentally called Liz. Mason's head snapping to look down at her didn't help and she could feel her cheeks begin to burn. Liz's brows rose but she smiled. "Well, come on Mason, we have, em, lemonade to drink." Eve said quickly, raising her glass awkwardly. "Thanks Liz." Eve said quickly and began to pull Mason away, but not before Eve saw the smile on Liz's face.
"God, you are something else, baby girl." Mason teased her as they walked away and stood on the far end of the shaded picnic area. Eve nudged him, sipping on the lemonade to try and conceal her warm cheeks. "It's cute." He added softly and looked out at the people around them.
After a few minutes of silence between the two and Eve's lemonade drank, she looked around the park. It was peaceful with people helping clean up debris and trash and cut the grass. It was a nice day. Eve breathed in the fresh air and sighed softly. Something she wouldn't have in the big city…when she left…whenever she left…Eve glanced up at Mason and saw him staring back at the crowd behind them.
"Earth to Mason." Eve chirped aloud, making Mason blink a few times and look down at her. "You alright?" She asked curiously, as he squeezed her hip.
"I'm alright, baby girl. Just…" Mason trailed off and sighed. "Lots to think about." He muttered. Eve frowned.
"Is this about your little chat with Stefan earlier?" Eve asked, folding her arms. Mason looked surprised. "I was coming back to grab more things, remember?" Eve reminded him and frowned. "What'd he say?" She asked. She had genuinely no idea what had happened. She didn't have her listening ears on because there were screaming kids playing in the park and her head was already starting to ache. Probably from the newly healed eyes. Mason shook his head.
"Nothing to worry your pretty redhead about." Mason muttered, leaning over and kissing the top of her head. "Oh hey, you were looking for that Caroline girl right?" Mason asked and Eve perked up slightly as she looked to where Mason was looking and saw Caroline and Elena walking not too far from them. "Go on, I'll survive without a pretty girl on my arm for a few minutes." Mason chuckled as he saw Eve light up. Eve smiled and handed him her empty cup which he slid under his own as Eve waved at him and moved through the crowd effortlessly to get to Caroline. Eve's ears perked up as she heard Caroline talking with Elena.
"So suddenly, she's in the running for Mother of the Year just when I'm trying to avoid her the most." Caroline complained as the two walked over to a veranda with paint buckets in their hands. "I'm babbling, you don't want to hear all this." Caroline sighed and Eve slowed her walk down as she listened in on the conversation.
"Oh, no, sorry. Then what happened?" Elena said, sounding distracted. Oh. She definitely wasn't going to interrupt this.
"Well, I was a bitch which is par for the course with us." Caroline huffed, turning towards Elena more. "So, how are things with you and Stefan? Anything?"
"What are we eavesdropping on?" Eve gasped and turned, punching Damon in the arm as he snuck up on her. He yelped playfully and rubbed his arm.
"Shush. Elena's giving the performance of a lifetime." Eve whispered back, not realizing she was leaning closer to him to whisper. Damon raised a brow but grinned, leaning closer to her as well. Fuck, were they always just gravitating towards one another like this? Eve ignored the fluttering in her heart as they both now eavesdropped on the two teens conversation.
"He's been pushing me away because he thinks that Katherine might get jealous enough to hurt me. I just don't know how to change his mind." Elena sighed heavily. Caroline's body seemed both supportive yet enthralled by the news.
"You said that Katherine's dangerous. Maybe he's got a point." Caroline said, gently placing a comforting hand on Elena's shoulder as Elena paused her painting.
"Maybe Katherine's dangerous." Damon whispered back in a mocking and dramatic voice. Eve couldn't help herself but to smile.
"Maybe he's got a point." Eve murmured back just as softly yet dramatically as well.
"Maybe we should teach Blondie some acting instead of vampire things. She's a shit actress." Damon suggested quietly making Eve bite her tongue to keep from laughing.
"Yeah, I know that she's dangerous and I know that he's just trying to protect me but it feels like giving up and I just…" Elena trailed off.
"Just what?" Caroline asked quickly.
"I just thought we were stronger than that." Elena mumbled softly back to Caroline.
"I was going to say it was weird how Elena was so good at acting, but then I remembered how she lied to her brother and is still lying to her aunt about things." Eve muttered back to Damon. His laugh made her heart warm and she hated herself for just a moment, looking back at him and seeing how his blue eyes crinkled and twinkled with humor and mischief. Eve couldn't help but smile as the two looked at each other.
I miss you I miss you I miss you.
"Your eyes grew back just as beautiful." Damon seemed to mutter the words out without thinking and Eve's heart skipped a beat before she huffed and swatted his arm, despite feeling the familiar burning in her cheeks.
"I didn't know Caroline was being a bitch to her mom." Eve said with a frown, changing the subject and looking back over to Caroline…but not before she saw Damon smirk at and glance at her warning cheeks. "Check on Liz while I try and figure out what's up Caroline's ass." Eve said, nodding back to where Liz was.
"Or who." Damon suggested, tapping her on the cheek, making her huff and swat at his hand. Damon chuckled and walked back to where Liz was while Eve walked to where Caroline and Elena were.
"Caroline." Eve said aloud making Caroline physically flinch. Eve froze in her spot as Elena looked up from her spot before shooting Caroline a confused look.
"Eve." Caroline greeted, but she could tell it was forced as she stood up straight. Eve's own brows furrowed down in confusion. "Sorry I didn't get a chance to answer your texts. Got busy." Caroline said casually, gesturing towards the paint can and brush she had in her hand. For as good of an actor Elena was, she wasn't very good at keeping a poker face in reality. She still had a confused look on her face as she looked between Caroline and Eve. Eve looked back at Elena who shrugged. Eve frowned.
"It's alright." Eve brushed it off and stepped hesitantly closer to the two, not understanding why Caroline was acting so…odd around her. Eve knew something was up, and she was pretty sure that something was a black pot, but what she didn't understand was why Caroline was acting out against Eve. "Can I, um…is there anything I can help with?" Eve asked curiously. Caroline tensed once more and Eve nearly snapped at her before Elena stood up and handed Eve her paint brush.
"Here. I'm going to go talk with Stefan." Elena said with a stern look as she looked over to where Stefan was. Eve took the paintbrush hesitantly.
"No, Elena, I think it's a bad idea." Caroline said quickly with a frown, but Elena was already storming up to Stefan.
"What's her problem?" Damon asked, suddenly flittering into the picture. Eve shot him a sharp look, indicating she hadn't gotten the chance to talk with Caroline alone, which Damon seemed to ignore.
"Don't worry about it." Caroline said, brushing him off as she turned her back to him and dipped her paintbrush into the paint bucket.
"Why are you being such a bitch to your mom?" Damon added and Caroline rolled her eyes and shot him a glare back.
"Don't worry about it." She muttered pointedly as she began to paint the leg of the veranda.
"Do you still care about Katherine?" Eve's ears perked up as both her and Damon seemed to snap towards Elena's voice noseily.
"Don't do this. Please don't turn this into something that it's not." Stefan shot back at Elena with a sigh.
"So this is not for discussion. That's what you're saying?" Elena scoffed back. Eve and Damon looked at one another and they both knew they were in for a show.
"No, I'm saying that this isn't up for discussion right now because we have ears on us." Stefan chastised back softly, looking over towards the three. Eve noticed Caroline had pushed her hair behind her ear to also listen. Eve looked up at the ceiling and pretended to inspect it casually while Damon looked at the table that held a paint can.
"Okay, when?" Elena asked sharply making Stefan huff out a sigh.
"I don't know." Stefan replied plainly.
"I saw her Stefan. It's like we are the same person. How could you hate her and be in love with me?" Elena snapped, folding her arms.
"You're reaching. I'm not...I'm not Damon." Stefan muttered, folding his arms now. Eve's eyes widened as she looked over at Damon who glanced at her. Both Eve and Damon couldn't even pretend that this wasn't what they lived for, even if they were fighting, and even if the drama was only fabricated.
"How about we don't bring Damon into this right now?" Elena muttered irritably.
"You know, I can't...I can't do this anymore, Elena." Stefan said, looking back at Elena for a long moment.
"Fine, Stefan. Whatever." Elena muttered back after a moment before storming away from him angrily. That must have been some secret code. Probably 'I love you' or something dumb.
"Relationships are about communication." Damon muttered aloud.
"Yeah, no wonder both you two can't seem to figure out if you're in love or just friends." Caroline muttered sharply as she quickly rushed after Elena. Eve and Damon both flinched at Caroline's harsh words…even if they were true. Damon clicked his tongue before letting out a laugh.
"Ouch." Damon chuckled softly while Eve's heart stammered.
"Yup." Eve mumbled back. "Go console your brother. He and your girlfriend just got into a fight, after all." Eve sassed him back a little more sharply than she had intended to as she turned and looked back to the picnic area where Mason had been.
"Hey, answer me this," Damon said, gently wrapping his hand around Eve's wrist, freezing her in her spot, and making her look back at him. "Does he like a good belly rub or is he more of a scratch behind the ear sorta guy?" Damon asked, his tone just as pointed as hers had been towards him. Eve scoffed and rolled her eyes, pulling her wrist free from his hand as she returned to the picnic area. Was this her life now? A few spare moments of hints of their old friendship before it was inevitably crushed by their own stupid jealously? She hated it.
"Hey baby girl!" Eve's brows furrowed as she looked around for his voice before she found him by the lemonade stand. She walked over to Mason and smiled. "Everything alright?" He asked curiously, already pulling her into him once she was within arms reach. Eve sighed softly, enjoying the physical attention.
"Not really." She grumbled with a sigh. Mason frowned, brushing some hair from her face and pushing it behind her ear.
"Come on, baby, don't make that face." Mason scolded her, caressing her face. Eve ignored how it wasn't instinctive to lean against his hand. "I'm sure your friend is just in a mood, like Lizzy said." Mason said in a reassuring tone as he tilted her chin up to look at him. "You're far too pretty to be so sad." Mason chided before kissing her. Eve's heart gently fluttered at how soft Mason was being. It was odd since any time they were physical, things ended up rough and heated…Someone clearing their throat made Mason and Eve pull apart, although Mason felt reluctant to pull away, Eve felt her heart skip a beat from feeling embarrassed at showing such a public display of affection. What made it worse was turning and seeing Damon looking at the two with a cocked head and a smile that didn't reach his glaring eyes.
"Working hard?" Damon asked through a forced smile.
"Doing our part." Mason chirped back casually with a smirk, wrapping his arm around Eve's waist.
"I heard you talked to Stefan." Damon added, glancing at Eve. Eve's brows furrowed as she looked back to Mason. Mason hadn't mentioned talking with Stefan…
"Nice guy." Mason said casually, yet the grip on Eve's hip told her everything she needed to know about how the talk went…either that, or Damon was the newfound irritation…which could also be the case.
"Yeah, a lot nicer than me." Damon chirped with a smirk, making Eve roll her eyes.
"Could you two play nice?" Eve complained with a small annoyed huff.
"Nice is overrated, Evie." Mason chuckled, but never took his eyes off Damon. Eve glanced between the two and saw how Mason was egging on Damon, and how Damon's jaw clenched tightly as he attempted to keep his usual smarmy smirk. Eve saw it falter. Nearly a century of friendship would do that. She knew all his ticks, and he didn't have the best poker face.
"That's what I thought." Damon forced out a laugh, patting Mason's shoulder. Eve watched the two as she felt Mason's grip tighten.
"As much fun as this is, I'm pretty sure Lizzy needs something from the two of us." Mason said with an obviously forced smile. "You have a good day, Damon." Mason said and was already leading Eve away from Damon and the lemonade stand through the crowd under the picnic area.
"Can you two really not be civil?" Eve chided softly as they walked together.
"I'm not the one who started any of this bullshit, baby girl." Mason complained back down to her. "I want to know why you spend so much time with those damn Salvatore brothers to begin with." Mason continued as they stepped just outside of the awning.
"Mason," Eve began in a reprimanding tone, but Mason pulled her by her hand, farther away from the picnic area and people behind one of the trees in the park.
"No, I'm being serious, baby, come on, I'm not an idiot." Mason grumbled, running his hand through his hair and letting go of her hand. Eve furrowed her brows in confusion. "We haven't talked about you being affected by that noise on your phone since…well, since my brother's funeral." Mason said exasperatedly, looking down at her. Eve's heart fluttered anxiously. It was past the full moon now, so Mason wasn't as strong, but she wasn't about to fuck around and find out what else werewolves could do when it wasn't their peak time of the month.
"Why are you bringing up the Salvatore's then if this is all about that noise?" Eve asked, folding her arms. She could continue to play dumb. Mason never brought up how he attacked her and damn near killed her the night of the full moon in werewolf form…and she hadn't really gotten any information from him about anything werewolf related. Hell, all the information she had gotten was from other people…
"I know you were part of the secret vampire counsel and all, and I mean, after the carnival and how I saw you interacting with them, I just…" Mason began before sighing.
"What?" Eve questioned a little sharper than she meant to. Maybe she really did have self-deprecating tendencies…and low impulse control.
"I know you're not a vampire, baby girl." Mason admitted and it took everything in Eve not to laugh. She couldn't help the look of surprise on her face though. "After the carnival, and the next day, that was the morning of the full moon, and I, well, we-"
"Fucked like desperate horny teenagers in the alley by the coffee shop," Eve had to interrupt him and continue his train of thought because otherwise, she would have started cackling. "And then proceeded to go to the Lockwood's old cellar where you put me in chains and-"
"Fucked you like a wild animal? Yeah, but afterwards, I gave you some water back in the jeep." Mason now interrupted her, fighting a small smirk as he continued her chain of thought just as she had done to him. Eve raised a brow back at him and nodded with a grin. "The water had vervain in it." Mason admitted, looking guilty. Eve's grin dropped. She remembered the subtle tingle the water had, but she didn't think anything of it at the time. Only then did the reason the hickies he had left on her last for a longer time than usual make sense.
"Wait, you…you tried to drug me with vervain?" Eve snapped angrily, making Mason grab her by her arm and pull her away from people. "Mason, what the fuck?!" Eve snapped, trying to lower her voice.
"Look, I'm sorry, it's just, you live with the Salvatore's and all. I had to make sure you weren't a vampire." Mason explained quickly, holding onto her arms and looked down at her with an apologetic look. "At the carnival, you were stronger than you should have been…I just wanted to make sure." Mason continued quickly. "Your hickies healed that same night I gave them to you, and I wasn't gentle giving them to you, baby, I…" Mason trailed off and looked around before leaning in. "Listen, baby, I have something I need to tell you…" Mason muttered softly as Eve looked at him confused. She had no idea where this was going.
"Mason!" Eve and Mason both flinched at Liz's voice calling out to Mason. Eve didn't even bother to be quiet in her irritable groan she let out. Maybe it wasn't anything, but Mason was going to tell her something werewolf related and she knew it. "Mason, I-" Liz froze as she stepped around the tree and found the two. "Eve…" Liz breathed out Eve's name softly and Eve felt her body tense up at how Liz looked like she had been crying.
"Liz?" Eve said her name softly, stepping around Mason quickly to get to Liz. Liz didn't hesitate to step forward and hug Eve. "What's wrong? What happened?" Eve asked quickly, hugging the woman back, feeling her shake.
"Oh, Eve, I'm sorry." Liz whispered as she stroked Eve's head. Eve's heart ached at the confusion and sorrow in Liz's voice, yet felt so much warmth from the embrace. Christ, she couldn't remember the last time a mother had hugged her. Eve remained silent as she hugged Liz tightly. "You…you should go be with Caroline." Liz said as she pulled away and wiped her eyes. Eve looked up at her with a concerned look.
"Liz, what are you talkin' about?" Eve asked sounding desperate for answers, but Liz only shook her head.
"Liz, it's alight. She'll be safe with me." Mason reassured, making Eve even more confused as Liz gently brushed some of Eve's hair out of her face and behind her ear. Liz breathed deeply but nodded.
"I'll explain everything later, okay." Liz reassured, looking behind her before she sniffled and began walking away.
"Liz? Liz!" Eve called out to her, but Mason grabbed her by the arm, making her flinch at the contact, but stop in her tracks.
"Baby, we need to talk." Mason said gently, making Eve look back at him. "Come on, I have to take the compost bins out in the woods." Mason explained gently, nodding for Eve to follow him. Eve looked back at Liz as she got on her phone, but Eve had to pick…between vampire problems and werewolf problems, she knew a lot less about werewolves than she did about vampires.
Eve reluctantly followed after Mason as he went and grabbed two trash bins and began heading to the woods. Eve followed without another word and looked back at the crowd of people. It was beginning to dwindle down as the sun began to set. Eve sighed as she finally spoke up.
"Mason," Eve began before Mason sighed heavily and put the trash bins on the ground, turning to her and gently putting his hands on her shoulders.
"I was the wolf that attacked you in the woods the other night." Mason admitted, much to Eve's surprise again. "I…I know you're in the town's secret counsel and all, and vampires are this town's main problem, but…werewolves exist…and…I'm one of them." Mason began and Eve couldn't stop the scoffed-out laugh that escaped her lungs. Yeah, no shit. "It's true, Eve, and…I think you're a werewolf too." Eve stopped at the confession, making Mason stop as well, looking back at her.
"Mason…that's crazy." This was crazy. Eve may have just found the most in way she could to find out more about werewolves, and if she needed to bark, she would be howling in the woods to figure out how to keep her and her friends alive.
"I know it sounds crazy, baby, but-" Mason began before freezing and looking behind Eve. Eve's brows furrowed before she saw Stefan behind Mason. Mason pulled Eve behind him so she could see Damon.
"Don't look so surprised, you knew this was inevitable." Damon snarled at Mason. Eve glanced back at Stefan momentarily before looking back to Damon.
"Damon, what are you-"
"This doesn't involve you, Evie." Damon interrupted her, glaring at Mason. Eve scoffed back at Damon, attempting to step around Mason, but Mason shook his head, wrapping his arms around Eve's waist.
"You're right." Mason growled back. "It doesn't." He snapped, looking behind Eve before throwing her to the ground and blocking her with his own body. Eve flinched and gasped at the sound of gunshots and Damon groaning. Eve looked over at Damon and saw him beginning to fall, gunshot wounds on his chest.
"Damon!" Eve yelled out, but Mason held her down tightly, she turned and saw Stefan fall to the ground as well. "Stefan!" Eve called out as Stefan fell backwards with similar wounds on his chest and stomach. "What the fuck!?" Eve snapped angrily before she saw Liz and two deputies walking towards them quickly with their guns drawn.
"Thank you Mason," Liz said as Mason helped Eve up. Eve watched helplessly frozen as Liz injected Stefan and Damon with a needle.
"Liz! What the fuck!" Eve barked before Mason wrapped his arm around her tightly keeping her at his side.
"I'm sorry, Eve, but they're vampires." Liz said calmly, but Eve could see in her eyes the same pain she saw earlier as Liz looked over to Damon before nodding at her deputies. Both deputies hoisted Damon and Stefan onto their shoulders.
"Liz, come on, that's fucking crazy!" Eve snapped and pulled away from Mason angrily. Liz raised her gun and pointed at Eve, making her stop in her tracks.
"They're just wooden bullets, Eve, but I can assure you that they can rip through humans or whatever it is you are just as easily as it did them." Liz stated coldly. Eve stood staring back at Liz feeling betrayed and hurt and so much more before she looked at how limp both Stefan and Damon were. Without warning, Eve felt a heavy cuff snap around her wrist. A slight tingle made her wince as she twisted around quickly, only for Mason to grab her other hand and snap the other cuff onto her wrist, locking her around a skinny tree.
"Hey!" Eve yelped as she yanked on the cuffs, ignoring the tingle of vervain as she glared back at Mason. Mason gave a slightly apologetic look back to her.
"Mason, show us the way." Liz instructed, looking back at Mason who walked around everyone quickly and nodded for them to follow, which they did.
"Liz…Damon…" Eve began to try and say, but Liz shook her head and cocked the pistol in warning as Eve leaned back against the tree.
"I'm really sorry, Eve…I know he was you…friend." Eve heard the crack in Liz's voice as she spoke before she forced herself to turn and follow.
"No, no, Liz! Mason!" Eve yelled after them as she pulled on the chains and hissed from the pain. Her tolerance to vervain had grown since she began ingesting it, but the sting of it physically touching her still wasn't pleasant.
Eve screamed out in frustration. Maybe she wasn't cursed with vampirism. Maybe she was cursed with being stuck against trees in the fucking forest of Mystic Falls.
