Marlis settled her dark green eyes on the building. The old school where they all used to go decades ago. She didn't have many memories of her final years there. Something happened and Finn had to fill in the blanks.
"Looks like we're the first ones here," Finn said.
Marlis looked sideways at Finn and their friends Damian and Asuka. They had been invited to a high school reunion and decided to go together. They had all been friends since high school. A small friendgroup of two couples. Finn and Marlis, Damian and Asuka.
"Guess we'll get a headstart on the good stuff," Damian grinned at Finn. "Good call walking here. I plan on getting dead drunk and reliving my glory days."
"Damian!" Asuka laughed.
"Man, we ran this place, didn't we?" Damian asked.
"Big time," Finn answered. "Everyone feared us."
Finn looked at Marlis and his smile dropped. There were so many holes in her memory that he never wanted her to fill.
"Well, they feared three of us," Finn kissed Marlis' cheek. "This one here was always too good for me. I don't know why you took a chance on a bad boy, darling, but I'm happy you did."
"I don't know either," Marlis said.
"Was that supposed to sound cute or cruel?" Finn laughed.
"She's gonna dump you tonight when she sees her high school crush again," Damian laughed too.
"I was her high school crush," Finn said.
Finn playfully pushed Damian and they all walked towards the doors. They entered the school and the door slammed behind them. Asuka grabbed it but it didn't move.
"The door is locked," Asuka said.
"Probably the wind," Finn shrugged. "We'll find one of our old teachers and tell them. They'll unlock it for the others."
"There's a sign," Damian said.
Damian walked over to the sign hanging on the wall.
"Reunion in the biology room," Damian read. "Damn, that's all the way on top."
"I sure don't miss those stairs," Finn sighed. "Alright, legs, show me what you got."
They all walked up the stairs until they reached the top floor. The door to the biology room was open and they walked inside. No one was there and the room wasn't decorated for a party.
"What's going on?" Asuka asked.
"Is someone playing a prank on us?" Damian asked.
"Maybe," Finn said. "Some of the guys loved to play pranks. It might be Miz. I doubt he ever grew up."
"I don't like this room," Marlis said.
"It's okay, darling," Finn said.
"This room feels evil. Like something bad happened here," Marlis said.
"She doesn't know," Damian mumbled.
"Shut up," Asuka whispered.
"Know what?" Marlis asked.
"Nothing," Finn faked a smile. "Damian's just messing around."
"No, something happened here and I demand to know what. If you won't tell me, I'm leaving," Marlis said.
Marlis looked from person to person but no one said a word. She turned on her heel and walked towards the door, only for it to slam shut in front of her. She grabbed the handle and tried her hardest to open the door but it remained locked. She turned around and looked at her husband and two friends.
"What happened here?" Marlis asked.
"Nothing," Finn answered.
"Don't fucking bullshit me around! You've been doing that for all our time together! I'm sick and tired of you pretending everything is okay and never telling me the things I need to know. Things I have the fucking right to know. Something happened in this room and you better fucking tell me or we're done, Finn. I'm leaving you the moment we get out of here," Marlis said angrily.
"And go where? You need my help after what you did," Finn said.
"I'd rather die than be with you another day!" Marlis snarled.
Finn gasped for breath and stared at her. Those words cut deep with what he had already gone through once with her.
"Maryse died," Damian said.
"Shut up!" Finn growled.
"There's no point in keeping it from her. I'm actually surprised she hasn't remembered it yet or read up about it somewhere," Damian said.
"Maryse," Marlis thought back in time. "The blonde Canadian who was in love with Finn?"
"Yes," Damian said.
"How did she die?" Marlis asked.
"It doesn't matter," Finn answered.
"How the fuck did she die?" Marlis raised her voice.
Finn looked over at Damian and then back at Marlis.
"We... Ehm... We did something," Finn said.
"What did we do?" Marlis asked.
"I cheated on you with her," Finn said.
"What?" Marlis asked.
"You forgave me. You just don't remember any of this anymore," Finn sighed. "She turned out to be a complete psycho stalking me and harassing you. One afternoon after school you had enough and you gathered the four of us to teach her a lesson. We chased her around school and ended up here in this room."
"And then what?" Marlis asked.
Finn shook his head but Damian pointed towards the fire escape.
"She died," Damian said. "Over there."
"How?" Marlis asked.
"She fell down," Asuka said.
Marlis walked over to the fire escape and looked out through the glass door. A piece of the railing on top was missing and it was a long fall down.
"The railing," Marlis said lowly. "They never got it fixed."
"That piece was always missing. This school doesn't care about anything that costs money," Damian said.
Marlis turned around and looked at them.
"You're not telling me the full truth," Marlis said.
"We are," Asuka said.
"You're lying. I know it. Tell me the truth, damn it!" Marlis demanded.
"You pushed her," Finn said.
It felt like all the air was sucked out of the room. Marlis stared at Finn and blinked a few times while taking in the words he had just said. She looked over at Damian and Asuka. Both of them nodded in agreement. She turned her eyes back to Finn. She had a hard time believing she would have pushed Maryse and caused her to die.
"What?" Marlis asked.
"You pushed her," Finn repeated. "You snapped that day. I've never seen you like that before. We chased her up here and she tried to escape down the fire escape. You ran out there and pushed her."
Tears ran down Marlis' cheeks. That was the secret that had been kept from her for all this time that she couldn't remember.
"Why did you keep it from me?" Marlis asked.
"You shot yourself because of it," Finn said. "I talked with your parents and we all agreed we couldn't risk you ever finding out and maybe trying to kill yourself again. It was best that you didn't remember."
"But I know I shot myself. I ransacked my own bedroom to try and find a diary or a suicide note to explain why I did what I did. I've been going out of my mind for years because of it," Marlis said.
"I know, darling," Finn said.
Finn walked over to Marlis and placed his hands on her cheeks.
"That's why you have me to take care of you. You never have to worry about anything when I'm around," Finn said.
Finn leaned in and placed a kiss on Marlis' forehead. She wanted to push him away but she didn't move a muscle. She just stood there feeling his lips against her skin. They heard a click and looked towards the door that suddenly had swung open.
"It's open," Asuka said.
"Someone's messing with us," Damian said.
"Maryse?" Marlis asked.
"Come on!" Finn laughed mockingly. "Someone knows or thinks they know something. Let's play along for now. Eventually they'll give up or show themselves."
"We have a whole school as our playground and no one to stop us," Damian cracked his knuckles. "Let's go see what the old building has to offer these days."
