Delivering the Letter
Draven stood at the edge of the settlement, his eyes on his loyal Dragonite. "Take this letter to the Kingdom's Gate," he instructed, tying the scroll securely around Dragonite's neck. "From there, the guards should deliver it to the Main Castle guards, who will then pass it to one of the royal guards. The Queen must receive it."
Dragonite nodded, understanding the importance of the task. With a powerful beat of its wings, it took to the sky, heading toward the Kingdom.
Draven watched until Dragonite disappeared into the horizon. He sighed, a mix of hope and anxiety swirling within him. "Let's hope this works, Lucario," he murmured to his steadfast companion, who nodded in silent agreement.
In the Royal Castle
In the grand hall of the castle, Queen Isabella and Princess Cynthia sat together, their conversation laced with both affection and tension.
"I understand, Mother," Cynthia said softly, her gaze downcast. "But finding a suitable prince is... difficult."
The Queen's expression softened. "I know, Cynthia. If your father were still alive, things would be different. He always had a way of easing such burdens."
The memory of the late King brought a moment of silence between them. The King had succumbed to an incurable illness, leaving Queen Isabella to shoulder the responsibilities of the Kingdom alone.
Their quiet moment was interrupted by a knock on the door. "Enter," the Queen commanded.
A royal guard stepped in, kneeling before them. "Your Majesty, a letter has arrived bearing the seal of Duke Draven."
Queen Isabella's eyes lit up with recognition. "Ah, the young Duke. Hand it over."
The guard presented the letter, and the Queen unrolled it, her eyes scanning the contents. A slow smile spread across her face. "Interesting," she murmured, handing the letter to Cynthia. "Read this."
Cynthia took the letter, her curiosity piqued. As she read Draven's proposal to take in the impoverished citizens and give them a second chance in his dukedom, she felt a tug at her heartstrings. She quickly masked her emotions, maintaining her composed demeanor. "Who is this Duke Draven?"
"The young man I made Duke a few weeks ago," the Queen explained. "He came here with his Lucario, demonstrating remarkable skill and integrity. In return for his excellent service, I rewarded him with his own land."
Cynthia remembered the fleeting moment when their eyes had met. There had been something compelling in his gaze. "It's a noble idea," she said thoughtfully. "One that could greatly benefit the Kingdom."
Queen Isabella nodded. "Indeed. We shall support his request. Make the necessary arrangements."
Cynthia turned to the kneeling guard. "Round up the impoverished citizens from around the Kingdom. They'll be transported to Duke Draven's land. Provide enough water and bread for a week for the journey."
The guard nodded, rising to his feet. "At once, Your Highness."
The next two days were a flurry of activity. Twenty carts, each capable of carrying about twenty-five people, were prepared. The Kingdom's Rapidash teams were assigned to pull the carts, ensuring a swift and efficient transport.
The guards moved through the city and countryside, gathering men, women, and children, careful not to separate families. Though the people were initially wary, they soon understood the opportunity being offered to them—a chance for a new beginning.
By the end of the second day, the carts were filled, and the convoy set off toward Draven's dukedom. The journey was arduous, but the prospect of a better life kept the spirits high.
Preparing for the Arrival
Back at the settlement, Byron was working alongside Kleo to build stronger walls, using their combined strength and skill. The villagers pulled their own weight, eager to contribute to the protection and growth of their new home. Kaida was busy in the fields, her hands and mind occupied with the tasks of agriculture.
Draven, however, was in his tent, poring over maps and plans. He and Lucario discussed the logistics of recruiting civilians and mercenaries to bolster their numbers.
"Thanks to Byron, we've developed dirt roads for transportation," Draven mused. "But we'll need to pave them eventually. I don't want to invest all our resources in development with a potential threat lurking in the forest."
Lucario nodded, his keen senses always alert for danger.
Suddenly, Byron burst into the tent, his face flushed with urgency. "Draven, you need to come outside. There are a lot of Rapidash heading our way."
Draven hurried out, his heart pounding with anticipation. In the distance, he saw a convoy of carts being pulled by Rapidash, the Royal Guard riding alongside them. As the convoy approached, Draven's pulse quickened.
"We come on the orders of the Queen," announced the lead guard as they arrived. "We have brought the peasants you requested."
Draven watched as the guards helped the people out of the carts. Men, women, and children, about five hundred in total, looked around with a mixture of hope and uncertainty.
Byron stepped forward, addressing the newcomers. "Welcome. You're safe here. We'll help you settle in and find work."
Draven felt a wave of responsibility wash over him. "Thank you," he said to the guards, who nodded and began their journey back to the Kingdom.
As the guards departed, Draven turned to the assembled people. "My name is Draven, and this is now your home. We have much work to do, but together, we can build something great."
The crowd murmured in response, their expressions a mix of relief and determination.
Kleo stepped forward, his voice carrying authority and warmth. "We'll start by organizing everyone into groups. Those with building skills, join me and Byron to strengthen our defenses. Those with farming experience, Kaida needs your help in the fields."
Draven nodded in agreement. "We'll also need people to help with general tasks—cooking, cleaning, and caring for the children. Everyone has a role to play."
Kaida smiled warmly at the newcomers. "Thank you for coming. We're in this together."
Over the next several days, the settlement buzzed with activity. The newcomers quickly integrated into the community, each person contributing their skills and labor. The walls grew higher and sturdier, the fields flourished under Kaida's watchful eye, and the sense of camaraderie and purpose deepened.
A Plan for the Future
One evening, as the sun set, casting a golden glow over the settlement, Draven sat with Kleo, Kaida, and Byron around a campfire.
"We've made a good start," Kleo said, his voice filled with satisfaction. "But there's still much to do."
Kaida nodded. "The fields are yielding well, but we need more seeds and tools to expand further."
Byron added, "The walls are coming along, but we need more materials to ensure they're strong enough to withstand any attack."
Draven listened, his mind turning over their words. "We're doing well, but we can't rest on our asses yet. We need to be prepared for the Galactic Bandits. They're still out there, and they won't hesitate to attack us."
The mention of the Bandits cast a shadow over the group. Byron's face hardened. "We can't let what happened to Canalave happen here."
Draven's eyes blazed with determination. "We won't. We'll be ready." Lucario, sitting beside Draven, nodded in agreement.
As the day wore on, Draven sat in his tent, staring at the map spread out before him. His mind raced with thoughts of how to best utilize the resources and people now under his care. The influx of refugees from Canalave Village and the Kingdom had increased their population to around 1,100, excluding himself, Kleo, Kaida, and Byron.
"Lucario, we have a lot of work to do," Draven muttered yet again, glancing at his faithful companion who nodded in agreement.
He called another meeting with Kleo, Kaida, and Byron to discuss their next steps.
"We need to prioritize," Draven began, addressing his core team. "Our development will slow down temporarily as we focus on immediate necessities. We need to ensure everyone is fed, sheltered, and safe."
Kleo nodded. "I agree. We've made progress, but with the extra people, it's going to be a challenge."
Draven turned to Kaida. "Kaida, you'll take two hundred of the people from the Kingdom and head south to Hulbury. We need an abundance of Poké Balls. The territory is owned by Baroness Nessa. We need to bolster our ranks with Pokémon trainers."
Kaida's eyes widened slightly but she nodded resolutely. "Understood. I'll leave at first light."
"Byron," Draven continued, "you'll stay here and continue working with the people on building more homes and strengthening our defenses. The walls are crucial to our protection." Byron's expression was serious. "I won't let you down. We'll make this place as secure as possible."
Draven then turned to Kleo. "You'll take my place while I'm gone. Ensure that everyone is doing what they're supposed to. Keep the morale high and the work steady." Kleo nodded, his face set with determination. "I've got this, Draven. We won't let anything slip."
Draven took a deep breath. "I'll head east beyond the large river. There are mercenaries I need to recruit into our army. This won't be my only stop; I have several places to visit. If everything goes well, I'll be back within a month."
The gravity of the situation hung heavy in the air. They were all aware of the stakes. Kaida stepped forward, her voice soft but firm. "Be careful, Draven. We'll hold the fort until you return." Draven smiled, appreciating her concern. "I will. We're all in this together."
As they dispersed to prepare for their respective tasks, Draven felt anxiety slowly creep over him. The weight of his responsibilities was immense, but so was his resolve to build a safe and prosperous dukedom for everyone.
Preparations
Early the next morning, the camp was a hive of activity. Kaida organized her group, giving clear instructions as they prepared to leave for Hulbury.
"Remember, we're buying Poké Balls in bulk," she reminded them. "Stay together and be respectful to the Baroness Nessa and her people. We need their cooperation."
Byron was already at work, directing the villagers and newcomers in constructing additional homes and reinforcing the walls.
Kleo walked with Draven to the edge of the camp. "You've got a lot on your plate," he said, clapping Draven on the shoulder. "But I believe in you. We all do." Draven gave a grateful nod. "Thanks, Kleo. Keep everyone safe while I'm gone."
With Lucario by his side, Draven hopped on his Dragonite with Lucario and set off eastward.
