Fighting Evil By Moonlight

By Lucky_Ladybug

Notes: The characters are not mine and the story is! This is a sequel to Moonlight Legend, which was a love letter to season 1 of Sailor Moon. This sequel will continue being such a love letter, bringing in some elements based on season 2, although it will likely be a looser adaptation than Moonlight Legend was for season 1. The basic concept for the stories involves Radley and Kalin being the reincarnations of Princes in Spain who saved the world in the past. While normally I dislike reincarnation ideas in stories, Sailor Moon handled it so beautifully and powerfully that I make an exception. The Eevees from the Pokemon crossover fics will feature in this story, unlike in Moonlight Legend, and will be like the Guardian Cats. Eevee timeline-wise, the story picks up following I'll Go Anywhere If I'm With You. Radley, of course, is a nice guy, the way I honestly see him.

Chapter One

"Radley! Radley! I have a song!"

It was a peaceful night at Radley and Kalin's house. They and all the Eevees were just arriving home after a pleasant evening sharing dinner and a traditional mini concert from Scotch and the Eevees at the diner. Now Evie was running over to Radley in all excitement, going up on two legs.

Radley smiled down at the sweet animal who was still just learning English. "Oh, you do, huh? I'd love to hear it."

Evie beamed and sat up tall to sing.

I'm a sweet little Eevee and never rage

Evie's my name but I don't know my age!

I don't have to worry and that is that

I'm safe with Radley and he gives me pats!

Radley chuckled, touched, and bent down to pet her head. "That was wonderful," he said. "Did you make up the words yourself?"

"Kind of," she said. "I took a song Scotch was watching and made my words!"

"I like your version best," Radley said.

Evie leaned into his hand in bliss. She had started to learn to speak English out of her love for Radley and deep desire to talk with him. Although she was still a beginner, she was picking up phrases faster and faster the more she practiced with them. This was her first English song and she was very proud of it.

Kalin looked bowled over. He was still getting used to the idea that Eevees could learn English. Their other Eevees hadn't yet spoken beyond an occasional syllable, but Evie talked all she could.

Evan rubbed against his legs. He might not be speaking English yet, but he loved Kalin deeply and showed it all he could.

Kalin reached to pet him. "You should record Evie singing that," he said to Radley.

"I should," Radley agreed, and took out his phone. "Will you sing that again, Evie?"

She was more than willing, beaming happily as she sang her version of Tweety's song with all her heart. Radley smiled, deeply moved by it.

"Has Scotch heard that yet?" Kalin wondered.

Evie shook her head. "I wanted Radley to hear first!" she said.

"And I'm honored," Radley said.

"The babies are learning songs too!" Evie said. Scotch's baby Eevee family was still singing in Eevee talk, but they were highly talented and everyone loved them.

"And I'm sure you're teaching them," Radley smiled.

"Yeah!" Evie beamed.

Radley picked Evie up and she snuggled close. "You know, I'd like to take you guys to meet my great-great-grandparents someday," he said. "I know they'd love you."

"I'd love them too!" Evie exclaimed.

Kalin held Evan, while Radley reached to also scoop up Lily and Ruby. "Do you think they'd see the Eevees as great-great-grandchildren?" he wondered.

"They're open-minded enough that they just might," Radley said.

"I'd like to see all the pretty pictures," Evie said. "And the castle!"

"And if we go, you'll definitely see them," Radley promised.

Kalin was silent. He and Radley were both from royal lines in Spain, and Radley's family's castle had been found after some sort of incredible ancient technology had hidden it in the ground on the great-great-grandparents' property, but Kalin still didn't know for sure what had happened to his family's castle. Some believed it destroyed, but no one seemed to know for sure.

Radley looked to him. "You're still wondering about it, huh?" he said quietly.

Kalin nodded. "I am. And wondering if there's any more to learn about our lives as the Princes."

"I wonder that too," Radley agreed.

Through a long and strange series of events, they had uncovered the truth that they were the reincarnated spirits of princes from Spain who had deeply bonded and had sealed away a great evil that had threatened to overtake the world. In the present day they had fought that evil again, along with many of their friends, and had, they hoped, defeated it for good. But they still wondered if the fighting was truly over or if there would be other enemies to defeat.

"I wish we'd been there to help then," Evie spoke up.

Radley looked alarmed at that. The evil had been ferocious. He would have hated to see such innocent animals struggling to take it on.

"I'm glad you're here to help now," he said with a smile. "You bring us so much comfort after so many scary things happened."

"Eevee," Lily said softly.

Radley hugged all three of his Eevees close. "Things have been so peaceful ever since all of you came," he said. "I hope it will just stay that way."

Kalin really hoped so too.

"We should get to bed," he said as he petted Evan.

"Yeah, we should," Radley said. "Let's get these sweethearts to bed and shower and then we'll lay down too."

Ruby started to purr. That sounded like a nice, peaceful ending to a good day. And although she enjoyed adventure, just snuggling close with all her loved ones sounded great right now.

Later that night everyone was fast asleep, Evie curled up adorably on Radley's chest. When a mysterious light shone down from the ceiling itself, only Evie stirred and looked up.

"What's happening?" she whispered.

A radiant child bathed in a glowing light was smiling at her. "It's time for Radley and Kalin to reawaken to the rest of their powers as princes and protectors of the world," she said. "And you, little Evie, will be right by Radley's side to help him. So will Lily and Ruby. Evan will help Kalin likewise."

Evie stared at her in awe. "How?" she asked.

The childlike being, who was clearly an angel, held out a beautiful sphere of blue light. It floated down to Evie and she reached for it with both front paws. "Give him this," the angel said. "And this is for Evan to give to Kalin." A second sphere sailed down and Evie caught it as well.

"Okay!" Evie said in all innocence. But then, as she paused to fully absorb what she was being told, she frowned a bit. "Wait! I thought they did what they were supposed to do as princes," she said in confusion. "They stopped the mean man and saved the world from him again! They even saved the person he was controlling."

Although she spoke most of these words in Eevee talk, the angel understood. She smiled. "They will be allowed to live out their lives together, as promised," she said. "But they must also be prepared for a new danger on the horizon, a danger that has reawakened with their awakening as the princes of Spanish legend."

"That's scary," Evie worried. "What is it?"

"You will all find out soon," the angel said. "Be brave, little Evie. Radley will need you."

Then she was gone and Evie was staring at the two spheres in bewilderment and concern.

Quickly she started to roll one of them over to Evan on the pet couch. He stirred, blinking sleepy eyes at his friend. "What's going on?" he asked.

"You need to give this to Kalin," Evie told him as she pushed the red orb to his front paws. "This nice angel person gave these to me and said we need to help Radley and Kalin because they have more powers as the princes and there's going to be more mean people!"

"What?" Evan sat up, placing a paw on the sphere. Evie was innocent and sweet, but she wasn't prone to becoming lost in dream-like fantasies. What she was saying sounded ludicrous, and yet after all they had been through, was it really? Had an angel really visited?

"That's just about all she said," Evie said. "I hope everything's going to be okay. . . ."

Evan certainly did too. What they had been told of Radley's and Kalin's discoveries of being the reincarnated spirits of princes who had saved the world from a great evil had been shocking, but they had all thought the dangers were over and that they could live in peace.

Or maybe Radley had suspected there would be more trouble. When they had first told the Eevees everything that had happened, and then again upon discussing it earlier that night, there had been a certain worried flicker in Radley's eyes.

Sighing, Evie rolled the blue orb over to the pet couch and laid by it. "We can tell them when they wake up," she said. "I don't want to make Radley wake up."

"I'm sure that's fine," Evan said. "If they needed to know right this second, the angel could have woke them up."

Deciding that was true, Evie cuddled closer to Evan and protected the sphere as she dozed.

Radley and Kalin slept peacefully until morning. When they started to stir at last, Radley looked blearily up at the ceiling and then over at the Eevees. He was soon staring in bewildered disbelief. "Kalin?" he asked.

Kalin grunted and rolled over, rising up to see what Radley sounded so confused about. ". . . Where did those things come from?" he soon exclaimed.

"That's what I'd like to know," Radley said. The blue and red orbs were still being protected by Evie and Evan as they peacefully slept.

Evie stirred at his voice. "Radley!" she greeted. She sat up. "A nice angel came and said I should give you this." She pawed at the blue sphere and rolled it to him.

He took it in shock. "Huh?! An angel?! Are you sure, honey?"

"Yeah! She was a little girl with . . . ice cream hair." Evie tilted her head. She wasn't sure how to say it in people talk.

Kalin stared at her. "What."

Radley chuckled. "You mean hair that looked like ice cream? Or maybe it was the color of an ice cream?"

"Yeah! The green kind!" Evie chirped.

A faraway look came into Radley's eyes. "Mint green hair," he whispered.

Kalin had gone stiff at the realization too. "It was the angel who brought you back to life in the Duel Monsters world," he rasped.

Radley nodded. They had never told Evie much about that time or what the angel had looked like, so she couldn't have dreamed the visit, surely, and the orbs were here as proof that something had happened. He turned the blue one around in his hands. "Did she say anything else?" he asked.

Evie nodded. "She said you need your other powers as princes because something else bad is going to happen." She frowned.

"Great," Kalin scowled.

Radley sighed heavily. He had suspected as much, but had hoped he was wrong. ". . . Did she say how to get these things to work?" he asked.

"No, she just said to give them to you," Evie replied.

Evan stirred now and nudged the red orb to Kalin, who took it with a blank expression.

Now that both Radley and Kalin were holding them, however, they started to glow. In each came the holographic image of a person—in Radley's, a woman who looked very much like his mother, while in Kalin's, it was a man he did not know. They did not speak at the same time, thankfully, but the image in Radley's orb activated first.

"My dear Ramon," she said, "I am making this recording so that you will hopefully understand all of this better when you are presented with it. The angel who came to me told me you will have it in your second chance and might not remember any of it beforehand.

"You studied so long and so hard to use the pendant that has been passed down in our family. You knew that if you were able to successfully unlock its powers, you would be granted other abilities as needed to guard Spain from threats. The princess Diamante nearly conquered our realm before she and her army were driven back. Although they have been frozen in sleep, this seal will not last and she will come for you again."

Radley gawked at the recording. "Diamante?! Frozen in sleep?! What the . . . ?! There was cryogenic tech back then?!"

Kalin shrugged. "Maybe it was some kind of magic spell?" he suggested.

Radley blinked at the all-too-logical suggestion. ". . . You're probably right," he realized. Magic as the explanation for something was all too probable in their lives."But there's still a lot of holes in this weird story. Just as there were in the original legend." He sighed.

"I know this must all sound strange to you, my son," the woman continued. "In this orb are the powers for you to call upon when a threat such as Diamante appears. I love you so much and I know you and Prince Kalin will prevail along with your beloved Eevees."

Evie's ears shot up. "She talked about us!"

All the Eevees were waking up now, staring at the holographic projection in confusion.

Kalin was staring too. "How would she know about the Eevees? Don't tell me they were with us in the past too."

Evie immediately rubbed Radley. "That would be so amazing!"

Radley hugged her, as well as Lily and Ruby as they went over to him. "This is . . . wow, I don't even know what to think. I'm not even sure what's the most shocking thing about all of this."

"The whole thing," Kalin deadpanned, echoing Radley's own statement from when they had first learned of the legend of the Princes.

"Yeah. Heh," Radley said with a dark smirk.

"When you need to call on these powers, remember to say 'Moonlight Gem Transformation,'" the recording concluded.

Radley snorted. "I'm actually getting a magical boy transformation? What?"

"Scotch will be thrilled," Kalin intoned.

"To say the least." Radley looked to Kalin. "What does your orb say?"

As soon as Radley's message finished, Kalin's orb started right up as if automatically triggered. "Hello, Son," the unfamiliar man greeted.

Kalin stared at the hologram. "Son," he whispered. "This was my father when I was Prince Kalin. . . . He's not the same man who is my father now." He looked to Radley. "Your mother is the same, so why . . . why didn't my father come to my second chance?"

Radley laid a hand on Kalin's shoulder. He certainly didn't have an answer.

Evan climbed into Kalin's lap to watch the recording and offer comfort. Kalin held him close.

"This woman Ramon's mother talked about is bad news. She's vicious and conniving, a warlord who tried to overthrow both our kingdoms. You and Ramon only defeated her by trapping her and her clan into a chamber when they stormed our castle and magically sealing them in sleep. You couldn't take time for anything more, not when the kingdoms were squabbling because of our insane hatred for each other.

"The angel Kasumi visited us and told us that once both of you reawaken as the Princes in your new lives, the spell over Diamante and her clan will be broken. They will awaken into a new and strange world, and although she will find that our kingdoms are no more, she will likely also find that you are both alive again. She will come for Ramon. She has always been obsessed with him. You and he must stand strong in this new threat to yourselves and to this world. Love—a true love like what you two have for each other—is the only thing that can defeat her. To transform, remember the phrase 'Yellow Rose Transformation.'" A pause. "I know I rarely said it, but I love you. I always have. And I am so proud of you."

Kalin just stared into the recording. "Father," he whispered. "Why didn't you come then? Why didn't you want to be here in our second chance?"

Radley hugged him close. So many concerning things had been said, but for Kalin, he could only focus on this aspect right now. He had been deeply wounded by his father in this life. Finding out his father as Prince Kalin had been someone else, someone who hadn't come here with them, was a fresh wound. Radley didn't know how long it might take for Kalin to deal with this new hurt.

The Eevees all gathered around as well, cuddling Kalin and trying to offer comfort. It was impossible to stay upset amid such fluffy cuteness and innocence, and finally Kalin smiled at them and looked up.

". . . He said they were in our castle," he said as he petted Eevees and leaned into Radley's arm. "But that would mean it wasn't destroyed in the final battle. Its stones aren't the building blocks of that village in Spain! So where is it?!"

"I don't know," Radley sighed. "Maybe if we're able to use what else is in these orbs, we'll have that knowledge too?"

"Maybe." Kalin leaned back, only now fully starting to absorb the rest of the message. "Wait, to transform I say 'Yellow Rose'?! Yellow roses were Prince Ramon's thing!"

Radley smiled a bit. "But I gave the roses to you. I guess they've always been a special thing between the Princes . . . and us."

"I guess," Kalin said. "And what's this about the female warlord obsessed with Ramon?!"

Radley suddenly froze. "Oh gosh. I didn't stop to think about it at first, but you know what 'Diamante' means? It's 'Diamond' in Spanish." His shoulders slumped. "I've got a female Diamond after me. That's just great."

Kalin frowned. "Diamond? As in Prince Diamond? Are you saying the Black Moon Clan is another element of the Princes' story the Sailor Moon manga-ka used as inspiration for her story?!"

"It sure looks that way, doesn't it," Radley said with a dark smirk. "Or it's one heck of a coincidence. And what's even more worrisome is that Prince Diamond, or Demande, whichever you wanna call him, is pretty much over-the-top evil in the manga version of Sailor Moon. He's even worse than the Crystal version, and that one was a piece of work as it was. If this real-life Diamante was the inspiration for the manga version at all, what's she going to be like?!"

". . . I think you'd better call your great-great-grandparents," Kalin said after a long moment. "They didn't mention any of this."

Radley grabbed for his phone. "I think you're right."

Valentina was all smiles when she answered the phone. "Radley!" she greeted. "It's been too long since you called. How are you and Kalin and all those dear, sweet animals?"

"We're great, Grandmama," Radley smiled as the Eevees chorused greetings. "Except . . ." He hesitated, not sure how he wanted to phrase it. "Do you know about Princess Diamante?"

Valentina went sheet-white. "What have you heard about her?"

Radley held up the blue orb. "Would you think I was crazy if I said an angel showed up here last night and brought these things to me and Kalin and told Evie about a new evil that was going to show up?"

"I would not think that at all," Valentina said, but her voice sounded strained.

"We'd play the messages on these things if we could," Radley said. "We each got one. But I'm not sure how to replay them. . . ."

As if on cue, the message started over. Valentina watched and listened with wide eyes. When it finished, the one on Kalin's sphere played again as well.

"That was truly amazing!" Valentina exclaimed. "I never thought I would see such technology and magic align! To have something preserved from that far in the past, from those important people . . . ! Those recordings are very priceless."

"Yeah," Radley said quietly. "They really are."

Valentina gave a heavy sigh as she sobered. She couldn't focus on the excitement of such communication from centuries ago right now. "Not much is even known about the princess," she said. "The legend is largely concerned with the great evil that was spreading through the kingdoms, as you both know. There are only one or two surviving tales about Diamante. We weren't even sure if she was real or if she was only a part of a folktale fans of the Princes made up later!"

"Ancient fanfiction, huh?" Radley said with a dry smirk. "Well, it looks like she's not. Will you tell us these stories about her, Grandmama?"

"Of course," Valentina nodded. "But . . . oh. . . ." She looked to the Eevees, who were all innocently looking up at her. "I am not sure they are good stories for such gentle minds."

"The angel said we would help Radley and Kalin!" Evie said, and the other Eevees nodded and called "Vees." "So we need to know!"

Valentina sighed. "Alright then. I will get the parchment." She hurriedly departed to find it, leaving everyone awkwardly worrying and waiting.

"Eevee," Lily said, shifting nervously.

Evie looked worried too. The stories might be really scary. But they still had to know!

Valentina soon returned with an old parchment in a protective frame. "Here are the tales of Princess Diamante," she said.

The stories were indeed disturbing. Diamante was a vicious woman who demanded her own way. She wasn't above attempting to raze villages to the ground if she believed it would further her cause. She first met Prince Ramon when she wanted to burn a village that refused to surrender to her. Ramon rode up to protect it with his kingdom's armies, his green eyes filled with fire and outrage, and from that moment on she lusted after him and was determined to have him by any means necessary.

Evie shivered. "She's so mean!"

"And I already see the Sailor Moon parallels again," Radley sighed. "Yeah, meeting up with her is not gonna be fun."

The second story was also disturbing, telling of Diamante intercepting Prince Kalin on the road and demanding to know why he had gained Prince Ramon's favor despite their warring kingdoms and yet she could not. Nothing he told her placated her, until at last she sneered at the very idea of true love and stormed off.

"Why didn't I write about her in my journal?" Kalin grunted.

"I don't know," Valentina admitted. "Perhaps she was so abhorrent to you, you just wanted to forget about her when you were writing and talk of happy things instead."

"Probably." But Kalin frowned. If only he had written of her and they'd have that information to go on!

"You must be very careful, all of you," Valentina said. "Have you tried the transformations yet?"

"No, we haven't," Radley admitted. "I thought we should immediately call you."

"I only wish I could have told you more," Valentina lamented. "Well, I do think you had both best try the transformations right away to see what they are like. I will hang up if you wish to examine them in private."

Radley weakly smiled. "Yeah. Thanks, Grandmama. I'll probably call back with a million more questions after we try them out."

"And unfortunately, on this matter I have no information," Valentina admitted. "Perhaps there is something in the castle that would tell more."

"That would be cool," Radley said.

"I will look," Valentina promised.

Goodbyes were said and Radley hung up with a sigh. "Well," he said, picking up the blue orb again, "shall we see exactly what we have in store to help us fight evil by moonlight?"

"Why not sunlight?" Kalin deadpanned. But he got up and took the red orb. "Let's go."

The Eevees stood by, ears pricked, as their beloved people held up the orbs and called the transformation keywords.

A bright glow enveloped them both.
