Second update :)
Lorelei's breath left her chapped lips in a white fog in the cold, still night. The chill of the winter air found its way through Lorelei's clothes.
Lorelei crouched in the shadows, hand resting on the rough bark of the tree beside her for balance as she scanned the nearby HYDRA base's perimeter.
The base was heavily guarded. The searchlights mounted on the wall swept the ground as patrols moved in rigid formations.
From what the team had observed, the base itself had two levels above ground and an unknown amount below.
Lorelei took a deep breath, steadying her nerves. She knew what she had to do—but that didn't make it any less stressful.
She could feel the HYDRA tech even from the distance she was at, its painful hum messing with her atoms.
Lorelei meticulously adjusted her clothes, the dark colors blending into the night. Her hands brushed over her daggers, ensuring they were securely sheathed and ready.
Lorelei paused, taking another deep breath to soothe her nerves. Her heart thudded against her ribs, but she knew she couldn't afford to let her nerves get the best of her.
Lorelei allowed her body to turn into a shadow and blend in with the night around her, and slipped through the perimeter unseen. Her ability allowed her to move almost invisibly, a ghost in the night.
Lorelei held her breath as a guard approached. Even though all he would have seen was an undulating mass of smoke in the light, she didn't want to set the whole base in an uproar.
When he passed, she moved with a swift purpose, slipping from shadow to shadow as she moved closer to the base.
She re-formed inside, her body a mere whisper of movement. The interior of the base was significantly colder than the night outside.
The base was eerily silent, the only sounds being the occasional footsteps of patrolling guards and the low hum of machinery.
Lorelei moved cautiously, sticking to the shadows and avoiding the pools of light cast by overhead lighting.
Lorelei tucked herself against a wall as she heard people talking loudly in German near the entrance to the first floor.
Lorelei took a deep breath, inching closer to catch snippets of their conversation.
"...more shipments expected tomorrow..." one guard commented.
"...increased security..." the other replied.
Lorelei remained where she was until their conversation trailed off and they moved on before slipping through the door they were guarding.
Her heart raced as she moved deeper into the base, her eyes constantly scanning for any sign of movement.
Lorelei used her ability when needed, slipping past guards and patrols with ease. But every time she had to solidify to interact with objects, a spike of anxiety hit her.
Lorelei halted in front of a door marked 'Sicherheitsprotokolle' (Security Protocols). Lorelei phased into her solid form and carefully entered the room, cringing at the proximity of the HYDRA technology.
The tech glowed a familiar blue, emitting a strange and almost powerful sensation which made her skin crawl and her head ache.
She forced herself to focus, scanning the room for any valuable intel, finding a series of filing cabinets.
She rifled through the papers quickly, stuffing anything marked "Top Secret" or "Classified" into her bag, her eyes darting to the door every few seconds, listening for any sign of movement.
With the papers secured, Lorelei moved to the stairwell leading to the lower levels. The base extended several levels underground, and she needed to map out each one.
Lorelei descended with caution, her senses on high alert. The further down she went, the more oppressive the atmosphere became.
The hum of the machinery grew louder, and the air was thick with the nauseating scent of oil and chemicals.
On the first underground level, she encountered more guards. Lorelei slipped past them, using her abilities to remain unseen. She found the first underground level was dedicated to prisoner containment.
Lorelei's heart ached at the sight of the cells, filled with emaciated, terrified prisoners.
She vowed to relay this information to the Commandos so they could plan a rescue operation.
The second underground level housed HYDRA's weapons development. Lorelei shuddered at the sight of the experimental devices, the energy they emitted sending painful waves through her body. She pushed through the discomfort, mapping out the area as quickly as possible.
The third underground level was the command center. Lorelei found the nerve center of the base, filled with high-ranking HYDRA officers and advanced technology.
She lingered in the shadows, listening to their discussions and noting the strategic importance of the information.
As she moved through the base, she had several close calls.
At one point, a guard nearly spotted her as she crossed a hallway. She pressed herself flat against the wall, her breathing shallow. The guard paused, his flashlight sweeping dangerously close to her hidden location, before moving on.
In another instance, she had to quickly turn into shadows to avoid a patrol that came around a corner unexpectedly.
The effort left her drained, but she couldn't afford to rest. She pushed on, determined to complete her mission.
With the entire base mapped out and the crucial intel secured, Lorelei began her ascent back to the surface.
Her nerves were frayed, and the proximity to the HYDRA tech had left her feeling drained and in pain. She remained vigilant, slipping past guards and avoiding detection.
As she neared the exit, Lorelei's anxiety peaked. She had been inside the base for hours, and the fear of being caught gnawed at her.
Finally, she reached the perimeter, emerging into the cold night air.
Once a decent distance away from any enemy eye, Lorelei collapsed against a tree, breathing heavily.
With trembling hands, she pulled out a notebook and began sketching.
Using her experience drawing, she accurately portrayed the layout of the base to record it all before she forgot.
By the time she reached the camp, the sky was imperceptibly lighter.
The Commandos were anxiously waiting for her return.
Steve was the first to spot her, his face breaking into a relieved smile. Lorelei's heart lifted at the sight of him, and she hurried over, her legs trembling with exhaustion.
"Lorelei!" Steve exclaimed, pulling her into a tight embrace. "You did it!"
The rest of the Commandos gathered around, their expressions a mix of relief and admiration.
"I got the intel," Lorelei said, her voice shaky from exhaustion.
She handed Steve the bag filled with documents. "And I mapped out the entire base."
"You did amazing. We couldn't have done this without you." Steve said, eyes shining with pride.
"Just doing my part." Lorelei's smile was tired, but bright.
The team gathered around to review the information she had collected. Lorelei stepped away, allowing herself a moment to breathe. Despite the fear and the pain, she had succeeded.
Steve looked up from the pile of information, spotting Lorelei a distance away.
He left the group to pour over the intel, approaching Lorelei.
"Let's get you some rest." Steve said, helping her to her bag.
"But-"
"Your part right now is over. We'll start preparations while you rest. You'll need all the energy you've got for tonight." Steve left no room for protest.
Lorelei relented, legs shaking. Lorelei climbed into her bag, quickly falling asleep from exhaustion.
