"Your-your Ladybug," the girl stammers. "I've always wanted to meet you." I smile, sticking out my hand. "I'm just a normal girl under the mask. And I'll let you in on a little secret: I can be kinda clumsy at times." "I'm Lyra. Hi, Hydra."
Hydra smiles at Lyra as we tuck into our meal. "Lyra's the best shooter in archery class. Oh, and she loves painting." I warm to the new girl even more. "I love painting. If your comfortable, I'd love to see your work." "Guardian Crumb said we were going to be roommates, so I'd love to show you my paintings." She turns to Cat Noir. "What's it like having Ladybug as a best friend? Is it true you call her Bugaboo?" Hm, maybe Lyra isn't as shy I thought!
Cat's eyes twinkle, giving me a secret wink. "Its never boring that's for sure." I blush, staring down into my dumplings.
After dinner, we head back to the hall, and Lyra takes my hand. I'm not sure how old she is, but I guess she's around the same age as when I received my Miraculous. "Come on, I want to show you the dorm!"
"Great!" I laugh, waving at Cat with my free hand. "See you later, Kitten!" He grins, blowing me a kiss.
The dorm is very cozy, we have a bunk bed, two desks to do our studies on, and the best thing of all is the picture window leading to a breathtaking view of the mountains beyond. My restless spirit flares again, and I can't figure out why. I'm where I'm supposed to be. Aren't I?
"I'm spent many hours sketching in the window seat," Lyra comes over to me. "But I want to live in Paris someday. I draw it quite a bit actually."
We sit down on the bottom bunk, and Lyra flips open her sketchbook. Each sketch is more beautiful then the last from the Eiffel Tower, to a lively city street, streetlamps glowing. We chat about art and fashion until its time for lights-out.
She's like a mini-me, I think as I lay with my head against my pillow, before I drift off to sleep. In the morning there's the usual scramble of getting ready for the day, I take advantage of the shower, the hot water and sweet smell of shampoo calming my thoughts. Tying my hair up in two buns, I step out into the main room. "Thanks again for showing me your pictures," I tell Lyra. "Do you want to go down to breakfast now?"
Lyra looks up a strange expression on her face. "My paintings will make me rich beyond measure, and you'll never measure up to my talent." I blink in surprise. What happened to the sweet shy girl of last night?
"Money isn't everything. Adrien Agreste is rich, and he could care less. What matters is you enjoy doing what you love." Lyra laughs, causing a shiver to run through me. "Oh, your friends with him? His account is a piggy bank compared to mine." "Lyra, what's with you-" "I'm not Lyra. My name is Greed."
My breath catches sharply in my throat. How is it possible that there was another akumatizon? Is there a hidden enemy among the students? An outside source? Scorpius himself?
I use my last tactic, hoping she'll break free. "Please, Lyra, whoever is controlling you, break free. Don't let them win."
I have to jump backwards onto my bed as she lifts her right hand, flinging coins at me. Confirmed, she's been akumatized. I need to leave the dorm for Cat to come help me, but what do I do for a half-second distraction? Wait!
"If you want to be really loaded, aren't you going to try and take my earrings?" Its the opportunity I needed, and I dash through the door, calling Cat.
"Lyra's been akumatized! Meet me outside!" I dash down the spiral staircase, praying hard I don't trip. My luck is favorable, as I make it out the door without tripping. Cat is waiting on the lawn. "Hang on, M'lady!" Before I know what's happening, we're going up, hiding under one of the eaves.
Cat agrees, whoever is the mastermind behind the akumatization, they're close by. "Can you think of any reason why she would fall for the trap?" Cat asks. I rack my brains. "We talked about art last night. I don't think I bragged…." My cheeks grow hot and red. What if I rattled her confidence? "Its not your fault, Bugaboo. You said her left fist is clenched?" I crinkle my brow. "Maybe there's a crumpled sketch? I was in the bathroom when the akumatizon happen, maybe she drew a sketch and got discouraged." Then, I have a idea.
"Cat, I got to her to the art room." Bumping fists, we come out of hiding. "Hey, Greed, would you like a shiny ring? All you have to do is ask nicely…." Cat calls. "First I want the earrings, then taking your ring will be a breeze!"
"Then come and get me!" Greed sees me and takes off, and I turn mapping my way to the art room. I rapidly tell Cat to hold her off until I send him the code word: color.
When I get the art room, I hurry over and take a deep breath, drawing Cat and I with the Eiffel Tower in the background. Its a rough sketch, but I want it like that. I text Cat, and soon the two of them burst into the room. I give Cat the signal to hold off, and I turn to Greed.
"You may think I'm perfect, Lyra, but I'm not. Whether I'm doing my art, or saving Paris, I'll always make mistakes. And your so talented, don't let self-doubt drag you down." I keep my voice gentle as I walk towards her, and she stands still.
I reach forward, gently opening her left hand, and as I expected, a crumpled paper drops into my hand. I tear it, and a butterfly flies out. Lyra sinks to the floor, and I'm quick to follow.
Lyra rubs at her temples. "What happened?" "I think your the only one that can answer that," I smile at her. "After talking last night, I just felt like my work wasn't good enough. I tried to draw a sketch of you and Cat, but I lost confidence in myself. Ladybug, can you forgive me?" "I already have." I crumple the sheet. "Oh, I love it. May I keep this?" she nods. "I was hoping you'd hang above the bed." "Tell you what, when I head back to the dorm, its the first thing I do." I give her a fist bump. "I need to talk to Kitty for a minute, but we'll be down soon."
When Lyra goes, Cat takes her place by my side. "You handled that well." "Thanks. I just wish I could figure out how there getting akumatized." Even though its only early morning, I already feel tired and drained.
Cat kisses my cheek. "Come on, let's get some food and coffee in you. You'll find better after." Crumb is waiting for us in the hall. "I heard what happened to Lyra. You are in our debt." I'm about to tell him there's no need, and then I get a idea. "Actually, you could help us. Do you have any statues of the past Ladybugs or Cat Noir's? My idea is to use our Kwagmatama and get some advice from past holders."
Its a bit of a long shot, but maybe they know something we don't. Crumb smiles at me. "Go eat breakfast, and meet me at the History Exhibit."
Already I feel better, but as we're walking to the cafeteria, we pass a window and maybe its my igamtion but I see a shadowy figure at the window. But before I can blink its gone.
