Scrambling around, Peter eagerly went from one point to the next, checking each item to ensure that his solar energy device would perform up to his expectations. He only had a few minutes left before the board would enter the room and he would present it before them, so everything needed to fire on all cylinders. Admittedly, he'd been checking the thing and making little tune ups for the past hour, but anything that ensured the board's approval was worth it to him.
After completing the check yet again, Peter looked up to observe the board members beginning to file in. He turned away from them, shut his eyes, and took a deep breath, letting it out slowly. He thought back to the encouraging words May, M.J. and Harry had given him this morning (his best bud getting a little ribbing in too, of course), each of them reminding him of the hard work and passion he'd poured into the project and to trust that. They also had reminded him that he'd only been a science protege since he was, like, five, so he had the knowledge and then some to go with the work ethic and passion. Frankly, their encouragement was why he was grateful to have people like them in his life, as his own neurotic, always-waiting-for-the-other-shoe-to-drop brain would never let him actually logically think through that stuff on its own.
"Peter."
He turned to see none other than Thomas Fireheart, the big boss himself, extending his hand before him.
"Mr. Fireheart, sir!" Peter said perhaps a little too enthusiastically as he shook the man's hand. "I apologize; I guess I'm just really excited today."
"I'd say that's perfectly reasonable," the man replied. "But I must also say that, from what I've heard of the ambitious nature of your project, I think I speak not only for myself, but everyone on the board when I say that we're all eager to learn more about it this morning."
"Thank you," Peter said gratefully. His boss then turned towards the board members, who were chatting amongst themselves, some standing and others sitting.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the board, thank you for being here this morning," Fireheart began, his words prompting total silence and those still standing to take their seats. "Today, you will hear from one of our brightest minds, one who has not only created something impressive, but who has a grand vision for how his invention may help change our world."
The man then turned to Peter, gesturing his way.
"Peter, you have the floor."
"Thank you, Mr. Fireheart," he began before turning to address the rest of the room. "Well, good morning, everyone! My name is Peter Parker, and admittedly, I had an icebreaker in mind for this morning, but then, well... I forgot the ice."
Fortunately, his joke got at least a couple tiny but still noticeable chuckles, which convinced him that thinking it up hadn't been a complete waste of time.
"Forgive me," Peter said with a slight chuckle of embarrassment, extending his hands towards the group for a moment. "You see, I have this nasty habit of making terrible jokes when I'm nervous. Then again, I suppose that's only natural, because today, my hope is to show you not simply an alternative energy means, but the future of clean, affordable energy that is accessible to anyone. Today, I will be..."
Peter's words were suddenly cut off, interrupted by the worst possible sound he could hear right now: his phone going off.
"Okay, that's embarrassing!" he said as he took out his phone. "Excuse me just a second folks while I..."
He was about to just silence it and turn it off when he saw who was calling him. Peter hesitated for a moment, staring at his phone and withholding a groan as he considered his next words. Finally, he looked back up to the group.
"Excuse me, ladies and gentleman; I need to make sure this isn't a personal emergency."
Stepping out of the room almost as fast as he could without giving away his enhanced speed, he finally answered the call as he strolled down the hall.
"Karen, this better be important," he said in a hushed but urgent voice. "I was just starting an important presentation!"
"Well, this should make you feel better: the police are on their way to Fisk Tower to arrest Kingpin right now!" Karen exclaimed.
"What!?" Peter questioned.
"Matt's already on his way," Karen explained. "He told me to call you; he left in a hurry a few minutes ago to help the authorities, and from what the news is saying, they'll need all the help they can get!"
Peter sighed, glancing back at the presentation room.
"Fisk, this better be the last time your nonsense interferes in my life," he said to himself as he hung up, hurrying his way up the stairs and to the roof. Once the door was shut, he hurriedly shed his clothes, slipping on his mask to complete his transformation into Spider-Man. He then leapt off the edge of the building, firing a web and swinging off in the direction of Fisk Tower. Though the building was on the other side of the city, it only took Peter about a minute to find and catch up to Matt, who was using his billy club to swing along in his Daredevil attire.
"So, not that I'm complaining about us being on our way to arrest our biggest enemy by any metric, but this seems kind of sudden," Peter said as he came alongside his superhero comrade. "Any idea what they got on him?"
"No," Daredevil replied as they continued along. "All I know is that an arrest warrant went out not even fifteen minutes ago, but from the sounds of things, Fisk was more than prepared."
"Which means that this likely won't be quick, will it?" Peter questioned.
"Probably not," Daredevil asked. "Why?"
"I'll explain some other time," Peter said. "Let's just get there and send Moby Dick on a one-way trip to Ryker's, or better yet, the Raft."
Peter then heard his phone going off through the ear piece in his mask; observing that it was his girlfriend, he answered.
"Hey, M.J!"
"I'm guessing you're on your way towards that chaos going on downtown?" she asked.
"Yep!" Peter affirmed. "Supposedly the police are in the process of trying to arrest Fisk; DD and I are on our way to help out."
"Okay, well, good luck!" M.J. replied. "And please, be careful out there."
"Always," Peter assured her. "After all, I have a special performance to catch later tonight!"
After a few minutes, the two finally arrived on site, which could be described as nothing less than pure chaos. The police on the ground were taking heavy fire from Fisk's men, particularly from the windows on the next two levels above them, but also from the ground level.
"I'll head in and take out the snipers!" Peter said. "You reinforce the cops on the ground!"
Matt simply nodded in the affirmative, and Peter turned his attention to where his entry point should be. It was then that some of Fisk's men had turned their attention to him as well, redirecting their fire his way. His spider sense directing him as he flipped and twisted through the halo of gunfire, Peter eventually chose his entry point via the center window, webbing the shooter in the face before kicking him in as he flew through, landing on the edge of a guardrail.
Naturally, his entrance didn't go unnoticed.
"Spider-Man!" yelled one of the men, who promptly turned and aimed his weapon at him. Two others joined suit, abandoning their positions in the process, just like he'd hoped.
"What, you didn't actually think I'd miss Willy's going away party, did you?" Peter tauntingly asked as they opened fire on him. Leaping and firing a web, he maintained a healthy distance ahead of the barrage of bullets behind him. Coming to a wall, he began running along, peering back at his opposition. With several quick flicks of his wrists from just the right angle to jam their guns, Peter had soon neutralized several of their weapons, allowing him to finally go on the offensive. With a series of quick and efficient moves, he swiftly KO'd or webbed up every one of them, with Matt entering through one of the windows just as he was wrapping up.
"The police said that they think Fisk is trying to escape via helicopter on the roof," his ally explained. "All of their choppers have already been grounded."
"Yeah, that's not a coincidence at all," Peter remarked. "Let's go."
The two men then did exactly that, with Peter forcing open the elevator door when it proved initially uncooperative, allowing them to enter. From there, a combination of wall crawling and grappling hooks landed them at the top floor, the two men pausing before entering.
"My spider sense is going crazy," Peter said in a hushed tone. "How many men are you picking up?"
"Seven," Matt confirmed. "All of them armed with machine guns too."
"Wow, I was expecting a better welcome party," Peter replied. "Alright, I'll go in first."
Shooting a web, Peter pulled open the door, their opposition on the other side remaining disciplined and withholding fire. Counting to three, he then launched himself through the opening at an impossibly fast speed, striking the first man before so much as a bullet was fired, knocking him out. Matt then quickly joined, and in less than twenty seconds, they'd neutralized every one of the men. Unfortunately, there was no time to celebrate, as the sound of helicopter blades firing up could be heard above them. Hurrying up the stairs and through the door to the roof, Peter and Matt were just in time to see Fisk getting in and closing the door to the helicopter, the thing promptly lifting off.
Realizing that their time was short, Peter worked quickly, firing several webs at the base of the chopper and anchoring them to different spots on the roof before firing two more webs, gripping them tightly in his hands. Fortunately, the airborne vehicle hadn't yet gained much momentum or height, the webs and Peter's sheer strength holding it in place. He then tugged hard, the helicopter tilting slightly but otherwise holding steady. Peter then gave another, harder yank, groaning with the effort. This time, the helicopter began to come down somewhat.
One of the side doors on the chopper then opened, revealing a man with a large machine gun that was pointing towards them.
"I'll take care of it!" Matt called out, already firing his grappling hook. "Just get it down!"
Peter's horn-headed ally then shot up, managing to get to the man before a shot could get off and swiftly taking him out. With no more worries about getting shot, he went back to focusing on pulling off this enormous feat of strength he'd been tasked with. Letting out a little slack, Peter then yanked as hard as he could, the helicopter coming down significantly more this time. He then dropped his webs and leapt the fifteen or so feet necessary, quickly disabling the engines at the back of the vehicle, sending it dropping hard to the ground.
Coming around to the side, Peter narrowly avoided Matt flying out of the side, crashing to the ground.
"Daredevil!" Peter called out. His spider sense alerted him just in time to turn and catch Wilson Fisk attempting to stab him with his cane, the end laced with a powerful taser. Grabbing the weapon with both hands, Peter pulled forward, sending his opponent careening to the rooftop as well, with Matt recovering and coming alongside him.
"It's over, Fisk," Matt said. "Stand down."
The man simply chuckled as he collected himself, standing to his feet.
"As the old saying goes... it ain't over til it's over," Fisk replied. Suddenly, several men emerged from the doorway, pouring onto the roof.
"Seriously, Willy, where do you get all these guys?" Peter questioned. "Henchmen's R- Us? I thought they went out of business years ago?"
Fisk didn't respond as the men all came alongside him, guns and weapons ready.
"Kingpin's mine!" Matt said.
"Perfect!" Peter replied with a shrug. "That leaves me with, well, everyone else."
Nevertheless, the two went about dividing and conquering, with Matt and Kingpin charging one another as Peter rushed towards this latest in Fisk's seemingly endless batch of cronies.
"Man, Ryker's is sure going to be full after today!" Peter said at one point as he flipped out of the way of gunfire. "How are they even going to make room for you guys AND your boss?"
All along the way, Peter kept an eye on Matt's struggle with Fisk even as he took down their enemy's reinforcements. At first, the Kingpin of Crime seemed be hold the advantage before Peter's horn-headed ally's determination and training kicked into overdrive, his enhanced senses gradually giving him the advantage as he began landing a series of devastating blows while avoiding his opponent's. Finally, Peter pinned down his last opponent in webbing, meaning that he could finally join the fight. He turned to see Matt in the process of landing several strikes to Fisk's face.
"Hey, Willy!"
Matt ceased his striking just as Fisk turned around. Peter then ran and leapt up into the air, rotating his body to the side and landing a devastating spin kick that sent his opponent straight to the ground, unconscious and defeated. He then got up, coming alongside his bleeding but victorious ally.
"I had that," Matt said.
"I know," Peter replied, "but I couldn't let you have all the fun now, could I?"
He then turned and stared down at their unconscious enemy, allowing himself to take in the moment, the biggest one of his superhero career so far: the Kingpin had finally been dethroned, at last.
Hope you're still enjoying it!
Continuing to pray for you all; stay safe and healthy!
