The look of pure hatred on Serana's face surprised me. There was fear, hatred, and anger. I didn't expect that. I didn't expect a human to be able to kill a hunter to protect a vampire. Then when I said we were going to Katherine I saw a flash of pain in her eyes. Then she looked away. We left after I hid the body and car. She slept the entire way to Chicago. It didn't surprise me. The human body can only handle so much trauma before it goes into protection mode even with vampire blood. We checked into a motel in one out of the two small towns in Chicago. I snooped around and sure enough we were in the right place. Everyone I asked about Katherine gave me the same compulsion answer. I returned to the hotel. I found Serana dressed and standing by the door waiting for me. She was nervous, and scared. She was fiddling with her hands. I shut the door and stood there staring at her.

"I'm guessing you found her. I'm positive that it means you don't need me anymore. I should leave you to be happy with her." Serana glanced towards the bathroom.

I paused to think before I said anything. She sounded really sad when she said that. I lifted her face so I could look at her. She kept her eyes downcast and towards the bathroom. I felt her heartbeat racing and saw the dry tears on her face.

"Serana. I haven't found her yet. So you're not going anywhere!" She opened her eyes and glanced towards the bathroom.

I rushed to the bathroom to find the glass broken. I came out and Serana was sitting on the bed. I was relieved.

"How did you know that I would figure out something wasn't right?" She smiled at me.

"I knew you'd catch on. Besides I made a promise. Most importantly you've put your trust in me. I wouldn't do anything to lose that trust." She sighed and fell backwards.

"Was it Katherine?" She smiled at me.

"She wants me gone. I told her no. She was about to lay a hand on me when there was pounding on the door. She made whoever it was go away. Then she tried using compulsion on me. At least she thought it worked. I'm a great actor." Serana laughed and then got serious.

"Will you go to be with her?" Serana closed her eyes.

I gazed down at her and I moved a piece of her hair.

"You sound jealous." She looked up at me.

"I don't deserve to be though, do I? You aren't attracted to me and we came here so you could find her. So you could let her know that you love her. I've gained your trust. I'm glad about that, but for you that probably means we are just friends. I won't make you choose. Do whatever makes you happy." She smiled up at me.

My entire body flooded with desire and anger. The look in her eyes was different from whenever I looked at Katherine with desire. I knew that deep down Katherine didn't care. As a human I didn't want to believe it. As a vampire I knew but ignored it and didn't care. I am a vampire now and this woman who I barely knew was risking her life left and right. The look in her eyes was different from what I always saw in Katherine's eyes. Katherine always saw us as playthings, but the look in Serana's eyes was nothing but love, unsureness, and trust. I didn't even feel this way when I first met Elena. Selena moved her hand in front of my face.

"Damon?" She was concerned.

I pounced on her. She looked up at me with a look of surprise.

"I'm not going to. I'm going to leave here with you, not her." She looked relieved and smiled.

Then she kissed me. It felt so different. Full of love and trust. She wrapped her arms around my neck and smiled. I pulled away and her eyes widened. I had never really felt this way about someone before. Then she turned her head and I felt my eyes change. As I bent down glass shattered all around us.
