"Ugh!" Raven exclaimed as she landed on her back in a pitch-black room. She could also hear the groans and vomiting echoing throughout. "Crap," she heard one of her teammates say. "I feel so dizzy," another teammate said. "Hello," she heard Robin call out from behind her. "Robin, activate dark mode," she heard Red Robin say from her right. "Where are we?" Raven heard Artemis call out from in front of her. "Tel ereht be thgil!" Zatanna exclaimed from Raven's side. A bright orb floated above Zatanna's hand, lighting a small section of the room.
"Are we still in the tower?" Artemis asked.
Red Robin looked at the small holographic map. "Yes, we are."
"Stay away from over there," Robin pointed to the spot where he'd just been standing, "I threw up."
"Yeah," Artemis doubled over, "my stomach is feeling wonky."
"Just…give it a moment," Red Robin said as he too reoriented himself. "Note to self – teleportation training."
"Good idea."
While the conversation was happening, Raven was looking around. She felt comfortable in the dark, and the shadows seemed to caress her. Additionally, with her exceptional night vision, she could see their whereabouts. "This room is empty," Raven said.
"How can you tell?" Zatanna asked.
"Darkness manipulation," Robin said excitedly. "You can use the darkness to feel your surroundings."
"I can also see perfectly in the dark," Raven blushed.
"Can you – hey!" Robin shrieked as something yanked him through the floor.
"Robin!" Red Robin yelled.
"Woah!" Artemis exclaimed before she too disappeared.
"What the -!" Zatanna screamed as something from the darkness wrapped around her waist and yanked her back.
"Raven," Red Robin turned to Raven. She reached for him, but then he disappeared, and Raven found herself floating in a world of nothingness. She tried to remain calm but was failing. She could sense the distress from her teammates. Pain shot through her head as if someone was trying to force their way in. Thinking quickly, Raven gave herself over to her soul-self and trusted it to get her somewhere safe.
"Ouch!" Robin landed on his shoulder. "Ow," he frowned as he slowly sat up. "I'm beginning to understand Bat's aversion to magic. Now, where am I?" He stood to his feet. He appeared to be on a ledge of some sort. He looked over it. "No!" he gasped, backing away. He was on a trapeze platform. Instead of a swing bar, there was a tightrope that led to a door that had to be 100 yards away. "You've got to be kidding me," he said. He looked over the edge once more to gauge the distance to the ground. He couldn't see it. "Crap," he muttered. A noise from behind him caught his attention. Robin cautiously turned around, his guard up. His mood lowered even more at what he saw. "Clowns? This is so not crush."
Artemis blinked her eyes as she regained consciousness. She rolled onto her back and wiggled her fingers and toes. Good. I'm not paralyzed. She stood to her feet and brushed herself off. Looking up, she came face-to-face with her reflection. "Ah!" she jumped back. Artemis finally looked around. She was in a hall of mirrors. "This is creepy," she said.
"You're so pathetic," Artemis heard a voice say.
"Who's there?" Artemis whirled around with her bow-and-arrow, ready to fire.
"And stupid," a voice said from behind her.
"Show yourself!" she demanded, spinning towards the source of the voice. However, no one was there. "I'm going crazy."
"You're a terrible mom to Lian."
"She'd be better off with the clone."
"They'd both be better off without you."
"You're a failure."
"Your life is in shambles."
"Do you really think you can raise a child?"
Artemis finally looked closer at the mirrors. My reflections! Only her reflections weren't mimicking her movements. Instead, they seemed to have personalities of their own. She rotated and saw her reflection's face transform from happiness to rage to hostility. "You're the reason he's dead."
"Shut up!" Artemis spun around to face the reflection who'd spoken.
"All that time you wasted, flirting."
"You didn't deserve him, anyway!"
"All you had to say was, 'I love you'! You couldn't even do that."
"Sportsmaster's disappointment of a daughter."
"You're going to get Jason killed."
"Are you going to string him along the way you strung Wally and Will?"
"Shut up! Shut up! Shut up!" Artemis screamed, releasing an arrow at each reflection. The mirrors shattered. Artemis sighed. "Finally, peace and quiet."
"You're so pathetic." Artemis' head snapped up at the sound of her own voice.
"And stupid."
"Shut up," Artemis backed away as the multiple voices grew louder and louder. "Shut up!" she turned and ran.
"You're a failure."
Zatanna ran through the rows and rows of bookshelves. "Well, this was a plot twist I didn't see coming," she gasped for breath as she dodged a giant encyclopedia flying at her head. She had limited options available to her. Her magic seemed to fizzle out, working for only a few seconds. Turning a corner, she paused when she saw a giant monster made from books, open his mouth and scream. Hundreds of papers flew out of its mouth. "Ow! Ow!" Zatanna exclaimed as her cheek and forehead were sliced. The papers were sharper than a knife's edge. "Dleihs!" Thankfully, a shield formed, blocking most of the assault. However, her legs were not protected at all. "Crap," she muttered as she turned to run the way she came. "Huh?" she paused. The shelves had shifted. She discovered that the path she had just taken was now blocked. "Are you kidding me? Fine," she huffed as she began running again. Obviously, I'm being led somewhere. I just wish I knew where.
Red Robin tucked and rolled before diving behind a giant gear shift. "Techno-magic! Are you kidding me?" A fiery dart whizzed by his head. "Crap. Gotta move!" Using his grappling gun, he swung out of the way of giant, falling tools. A loud clang rattled his eardrums and shook the room he was in. "Great. I'm in a giant clock." Distracted, he yelped as a laser beam grazed his arm. "Drones shooting lasers? Of course! Why not?" He swiftly found shelter beneath a cog. He was dripping sweat. I can't keep this up much longer. He stuck his head out from his hiding place. Narrowing his HUD, he could see interlocking gears, giant springs, enormous screwdrivers and wrenches, and an impossibly large swinging pendulum. The giant instruments weren't what got his attention. Beyond them, there was something. He couldn't make out what it was, but he knew it was important. "Looks like I have a new target."
Child clapped her hands and laughed with glee. "How delightful! This game is so much fun. I see one hero, two heroes, three heroes, four heroes, fi-" She stopped mid-sentence. "Where's the dark one hiding? She was just here. This is dreadfully disappointing." She created tiny, diamond-shaped flames. "Find the cloaked-one and bring her to me. I grow bored with this little game."
