The next morning, Jay and Chantelle were at the local card shop, browsing through the selection of Mother's Day cards and gifts for Erin. The shop was filled with colorful displays, and Chantelle's eyes sparkled with excitement as she looked at all the options.

"Daddy, look at this one!" Chantelle exclaimed, holding up a card with a beautiful floral design. "Mama will love it!"

Jay smiled, feeling a sense of warmth at his daughter's enthusiasm. "That's a great choice, Chantelle," he said, picking out a few more items to add to their basket.

As they continued to browse, Chantelle suddenly stopped in front of a section dedicated to cards for grandmothers. She picked up a card with a picture of a grandmother and her grandchild on the front. "What about this one for Grandma?" she asked innocently, not knowing that Jay's mother had passed away.

Jay's heart sank, and he felt a lump form in his throat. He went silent, his mind going blank as memories of his mother flooded back. He stood there, unable to find the words to explain to Chantelle.

Sensing something was wrong, Chantelle gently tapped Jay's hand. "Daddy?" she said softly, her eyes filled with concern.

Jay took a deep breath, trying to compose himself. He knelt down to Chantelle's level, his eyes misty with tears. "Sweetie, Grandma isn't with us anymore," he said gently, his voice trembling. "She passed away a while ago."

Chantelle's face fell, and she looked at Jay with wide, sad eyes. "Oh… I'm sorry, Daddy," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Jay hugged her tightly, feeling a mix of sadness and gratitude for her empathy. "It's okay, Chantelle. Grandma loved you very much, and she would be so proud of you," he said, his voice filled with emotion.

Chantelle hugged him back, her small arms wrapped around his neck. "I love you, Daddy," she said softly.

Jay smiled through his tears, feeling a sense of comfort from his daughter's love. "I love you too, Chantelle," he said, standing up and holding her hand. "Let's find something special for Mama."

Together, they continued their search, finding the perfect gifts to show Erin just how much she meant to them.

As Jay and Chantelle drove back to the apartment, the atmosphere in the car was heavy with unspoken emotions. Jay's eyes were filled with tears, and he gripped the steering wheel tightly, trying to keep his composure.

Chantelle, sitting in the back seat, noticed her father's distress. "Daddy, are you okay?" she asked softly, her voice filled with concern.

Jay took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. "I'm okay, Chantelle. Just thinking about Grandma," he replied, his voice trembling slightly.

Chantelle's face fell as she remembered their conversation in the card shop. "I'm sorry, Daddy. I didn't mean to make you sad," she said, her eyes wide with worry.

Jay glanced at her in the rearview mirror, giving her a reassuring smile despite his tears. "It's not your fault, sweetie. Sometimes it's good to remember the people we love, even if it makes us sad," he said gently.

Chantelle nodded, understanding a little better. She reached forward and tapped Jay's hand, her small touch offering comfort. "I love you, Daddy," she said softly.

Jay's heart swelled with love for his daughter. "I love you too, Chantelle," he replied, his voice filled with emotion.

As Jay and Chantelle walked into the apartment, the familiar warmth of home greeted them. Chantelle, eager to share their morning adventure, immediately ran over to Erin, who was sitting on the couch reading a book.

"Mama! Mama! Look what we got for you!" Chantelle exclaimed, her face beaming with excitement as she held up the bag of Mother's Day gifts.

Erin looked up, her eyes lighting up with joy. "Oh, Chantelle, you and Daddy went shopping for me?" she asked, setting her book aside and opening her arms for a hug.

Chantelle nodded enthusiastically, jumping into Erin's embrace. "Yes! We got you a card and some special things. Daddy helped me pick them out," she said proudly.

Jay, standing by the door, watched the scene with a smile, though his eyes were still a bit misty from earlier. Erin noticed and gave him a knowing look, her expression softening with understanding.

"Thank you, Chantelle. I can't wait to see what you picked out," Erin said, kissing her daughter's forehead. She then looked up at Jay, her eyes filled with love and concern. "Are you okay, Jay?" she asked gently.

Jay nodded, walking over to join them. "Yeah, just had a moment back there," he said, his voice steadying. "But I'm okay now."

Erin reached out and took his hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze. "I'm glad you're here," she said softly.

Chantelle, sensing the tender moment, looked up at her parents with a smile. "We're all together," she said simply, her words filled with the innocent wisdom of a child.

Erin and Jay exchanged a glance, their hearts swelling with love for their family.
