Eddie had been home a couple of days, and she was already going stir crazy in the apartment. She found herself wandering into the nursery and began to rearrange the stuffed animals on top of the dresser. Rearranging the last stuffed animal, her hand lingered over it, and she held it in her hand. Taking it, she went over to the rocking chair and sat down in it. It was a small stuffed bear. Smiling, Eddie ran a hand over it. Jamie had picked it out and from the local toy shop just four blocks from their apartment. She hadn't even noticed Jamie come into the nursery. Crouching down in front of her, Jamie put his hands on her knees.
"Hey. How long have you been in here?"
Eddie sniffled and swiped at her tears still clutching the bear in her hands.
"A few minutes. Even though she hasn't spent a night in here, yet I feel closer to her somehow. Does that make sense?"
Jamie nodded and looked up into Eddie's eyes.
"It does. This is her nursery. When we find her and get her back, we are going to spend as much time as possible with her. She's going to have a great life."
Getting to his feet, Jamie pulled Eddie up carefully and into a kiss. When the couple finally pulled apart, Jamie saw that fire in her eyes again.
"Come on bub. Let's go out and find her."
Eddie was certain she could keep up with Jamie. She wasn't about to sit back and do nothing while their baby girl was out there somewhere. She was already pulling on his hand, and he stopped her just outside the nursery.
"I really love your can-do attitude babe. I really do, but we have to look at the practical side of things here. However, we can go down to the precinct and makes some inquiries."
Eddie nodded and put her head on Jamie's shoulder. He was her support beams right now. But she knew she had to be strong too. Their little girl was alive after all.
"Sarge? What are you doing here?"
Jamie was about to speak up but it was Eddie who did instead.
"Just looking for my baby Badillo. You can't really expect me or him to sit at home and wait for news do you?"
Badillo shook his head and looked at Eddie.
"No. But shouldn't you be at home resting? I mean you were injured only 4 days ago."
Eddie brushed off Badillo.
"I'll rest when I know my baby is safe and back with us."
Badillo gave Jamie a look. Jamie gave a shrug.
"I can't really argue with her when she puts her mind to something."
Eddie gave Jamie a look and wanted to give his arm a light tap with the back of her hand but thought the better of it. Then she turned her attention to Badillo.
"So, who's your new partner?"
Badillo groaned and shook his head.
"Lennox. She's a solid partner out there on the streets, but she doesn't want to fill out the 5's. She thinks that paperwork is a waste of time."
Eddie gave a slight smile.
"Admit it partner, you miss me."
Badillo pretended to scoff at Eddie.
"Nope. Not one bit. I don't miss those sounds you make when you're eating. That's irritating."
Jamie hid a smile. Then started steering Eddie away.
"Ok Ed. Let's get to the squad room upstairs."
Jamie and Eddie took the elevator up to the floor where the detective squad was. Eddie felt butterflies begin to crowd her stomach and Jamie squeezed her hand to comfort her. She could feel several sets of eyes on them as they approached a desk with two detectives looking through a seemingly large mountain of paperwork mixed with stills from video surveillance. One of the detectives looked up at Jamie and frowned.
"We don't have anything new to update you two with. We're working around the clock. Greg Sarson was arrested this morning in an apartment in East New York."
Jamie felt himself getting irritated, but he knew him and Eddie both needed to see from the other side of things.
"Ok, but what about the woman in the gray hoodie?"
The detective sitting at the desk across from him shook his head but was interrupted by his cell phone.
"Carson. Ok. What hospital are they taking her to? Presbyterian? Ok, I'll notify them. Thank-you."
Eddie felt the butterflies begin to flutter in her stomach again. Detective Carson looked both Jamie and Eddie in the eye.
"EMT's just picked up an infant from a homeless camp and are en route to Presbyterian, matching Megan's general description."
The new parents reached Presbyterian hospital in record time it seemed, but in reality, not really. An hour wasn't really record time. When they reached the desk in the Emergency Department, the nurse at the desk seemed to be fielding six different calls at once. Jamie took the leap and politely spoke.
"Excuse me ma'am, my wife and I were informed that our Megan Reagan was brought in by EMT's about an hour ago."
The nurse behind the admit desk held her index finger up and then she hung up the phone.
"Sorry for the wait sir. You said your daughter was brought in about an hour ago. What was your name?"
Jamie cleared his throat and squeezed Eddie's hand.
"Sargent Jamie Reagan. This is my wife, Eddie. Our daughter's name is Megan Reagan."
The nurse typed in some information into the computer and nodded her head.
"There was a baby girl that was brought in an hour ago. Have a seat in the chairs over there and a doctor will be with you shortly."
Jamie nodded even though he really wanted to see the baby girl that was somewhere in this hospital. Leading Eddie over to the waiting room chairs, the couple sat down and waited. Eddie grabbed a random magazine from the small table next to her and began flipping through it. Jamie placed a hand on the back of her neck and gently massaged it.
"Everything's going to work out babe."
Eddie nodded and took in a breath and let it out through her mouth slowly.
"I know bub. I just want to get Megan back and put this awful nightmare behind us."
It was about 30 minutes before a doctor came out to the waiting room.
"Mr. and Mrs. Reagan?"
Jamie and Eddie stood up as the doctor approached them.
"Yes, that's us. Is our daughter ok?"
The doctor in front of them took a seat on the hard plastic chairs. Jamie and Eddie resumed their spots next to one another.
"I'm Doctor Anderson. I've been taking care of the infant the EMT's brought in. She's completely stable and doing well. What I'm going to have the two of you do is check in with the nurse at the front desk and then go up to the lab on the second floor and get your DNA tested to see if it matches the infant that was brought in."
Eddie looked at Doctor Anderson and nodded.
"Of course. We just want our baby back."
Jamie felt Eddie pull him to his feet and over to the admit desk with a strength he didn't know she had. Especially since she'd only been out of the hospital a few days.
"Ok Eddie. All done. Should have the results in about an hour."
Eddie heard Jamie gag slightly in the next chair over from her. She got a concerned look on her face.
"You doing ok over there bub?"
Jamie stood up and nodded as the lab tech told him exactly the same thing Eddie had just been told.
"Ok. We should have the results back in about an hour."
Eddie stepped up to Jamie and then looked at the lab tech who was about to take the used tray of supplies away.
"Is he ok?"
The lab tech smiled and nodded her head.
"He's fine. He's just got a very sensitive gag reflex."
Eddie gave Jamie a sympathetic look.
"Are you really ok?"
Jamie nodded and cleared his throat.
"Yeah. Why do you think I chew my food a million times like you say?"
Eddie nodded in understanding.
"That makes sense in hindsight."
The couple exited the lab and went back down to the first floor. Now it was just a wait and see game.
"Bub, that little girl in the nursery has to be Megan. It has to be. She's four days old now. I just want to hold her in my arms. Don't you?"
Jamie nodded and brought Eddie closer to him in a side embrace in the hard plastic chairs.
"Of course I want to hold her. Neither of us have, and it wasn't fair how she came into the world either."
Eddie swallowed hard and tried to keep her fragmented memories at bay. Tears started to pool in her eyes, but she did her best to keep them from falling. Jamie rocked her slightly and ran a hand through her hair. The couple looked up when they saw Doctor Anderson come into the waiting room.
"Mr. and Mrs. Reagan?"
Jamie helped Eddie stand and she swiped at her tears.
"What do the results say?"
Doctor Anderson turned his head and held an outstretched hand towards an exam room.
"Let's go into this room for some privacy."
Jamie and Eddie followed Doctor Anderson into the exam room and closed the sliding glass door. Each had a seat in a chair, and he sat on a rolling metal stool. Eddie was getting annoyed and blurted out her impatience.
"So, what do the results say?"
Doctor Anderson shook his head and logged onto the computer in front of him. He pulled up both Eddie's and Jamie's DNA results and then the baby girl that was brought in. Jamie squeezed Eddie's hand and steadied her.
"Well, going over both of your results here and comparing them to the baby girl brought in earlier today, she unfortunately isn't a match. I'm sorry."
Eddie felt a lump in her throat and shook her head no at Doctor Anderson.
"No. There has to be some sort of mistake. Can't you run the test one more time? Just to be sure?"
Eddie knew that this was the same DNA testing that the NYPD used. So, there was no mistake. Jamie pulled Eddie into his arms and rubbed her back. He looked at Doctor Anderson and nodded his head.
"Thank-you Doctor Anderson."
Doctor Anderson nodded and quietly left the couple alone. Jamie rocked Eddie back and forth a few times, kissing her forehead and whispering in her ear.
"We're going to find her babe. I promise."
Eddie looked up into Jamie's eyes.
"You know how this goes Jamie; she's been missing 4 days already. You know the window for finding her goes cold after that…"
Jamie felt a pit in his stomach.
"We can't think like that babe. We have to stay positive. We'll get her back."
