Chapter 3: Midnight Railway; Summertime Throw - Away

/

The inn that the school's headmistress had chosen had a large lower level, the rest being escorted to a country - esque upstairs in the style of Kobe's traditional tourist vibe. Ami remembered up to a point to act polite. No shoes, listen to the owner and lastly –

Here, the sights were really out of this world. "This is the Hyogo prefecture." Kaede looked at the guide and sat back leisurely with her shirt untucked. "A lot of influence is to the old religions and Buddhist statues –

"WOWW!!" Haru looked up at a taxidermy ( Ghost Stories homage) bear in the hall "Sun bear, right? We are in the real place of the ancestors, Kaede!"

"Not now, Haru – ne" Kaede rolled her eyes as the guests were left be. Iyori was the only one paying mind to their host, while her other underclass – woman Ami was as curious about the terrace as they'd expected. "In Gotham, my Grandfather Wayne doesn't get this kind of breeze…feels nice."

"Summer is a month away, you know." Saturday smiled helpfully while Iyori handed the Djinn servant all of her luggage. "I want to make one thing clear however, Ami – chan." Iyori's strong gaze had Ami pulled from her scenic view. "Wow, your eyes are really cool! They remind me of a fairy –

The well to do child of Japanese soil sputtered a retort. Her eyes moving to look over Ami. To point out how rude that was to say. That… well, she didn't have to poke around her dumb nose where it wasn't needed.

"I AM A STUDENT. AND FIRSTLY, YOUR SENPAI." She huffed and left Saturday to her belongings. "I will claim this room. You and your dog characters…. may take the other –

"But a dangerous youkai is on the loose!" Haru yipped timidly. "We should not separate. That plan will lead –

"MORE time for Saturday and Aya – kyan and I to solve this mystery before you do." She grinned and laughed, haughtiness echoing from down the hall. Her voice thrown to take over the entire upper floor. Ami was sure though as Iyori shut the sliding screen, that those eyes did look like those of a daemon.

"She could be possessed."

"Ami." Kaede flicked her fox tail as Haru sat and meditated until supper. "We need to scale the grounds. Look to see if anything happened by the station …but during the day it won't show." "Tonight? Stake out?" Ami bounced onto her knees and grinned up at the elder fox. "Haru? You hear that? We're back in business!"

"Let this please not be at the shrine in Tokyo back when you were in training there…" Haru sighed and continued to let her ears act as antennae. "The last thing we want is a hoard of pet yokai to feed. You attract them as the sun goddesses own vassal. Be careful, Ami – chan. You are of age, and now the spirit will know that you're a real threat –

"At fourteen, I SO was busting butt in Shinjuku! How mean, Haru – chi!" Ami pouted and dragged herself to stand. A pointer finger to the sky setting beyond their window ledge. "Look out, Kobe! You've got the perfect Mahou Shojo team for the job. Exorcist style. We'll beat Iyori and get back to the school. She has to be a poser, maybe she is too delicate –

"She can summon high ranking spirit, Ami – chan." Kadef said, concern causing her eyes to sharpen a bit at that same sky. "Tonight, we may just see the little progeny for wombat she truly is…"

"Is…." Ami blinked and was sure Kaede wasn't telling her something. "You know that what I saw –

"You'll see, and you might help each other." Kaede stretched out and laid onto her side as Ami gawked at the words spilling from her friend 's lips. "No way! She's a know it all, right? Then what is it that you know that I have to figure out? Don't go all Sifu on me, Sensei~!"

The meal was seasonal, fresh and lots of thoughts stayed boxed as their emotions at the table. Each ate, parted and pretended to go to bed.

As the sun dipped low, ten o clock ran round. Ami was atop Kaede's back as the kyubi (or nine tailed fox that was Kaede in her nine tailed glory,) leaped over a splay of trees that just touched the moon. The station they'd come from was left with two other commuters as the last call on the intercom was relayed to any remaining ticket holders. Any day now, the foxes agreed that they'd see some fireworks.

In a yip out of the air, Kaede turned left and took a nose dive as Ami cried out, losing the fox's back while Haru transformed to make sure as a distance away, they could not be spotted.

The group landed thankfully with Ami's life in danger, close to the platform as with a snide grin beside two vaguely more dangerous spirit beings, the foxes realized that Aya had a raiment and was in fact a Shikigami. ( Inspired by Shonen Onmyouji.)

A being that was beside Iyori were not one but two. A dangerous looking man with a sash and the attire of sometime out of a fairy tale in Raku's father Azag's world. Jinni could fight, but his power was to an elemental fire that Azag had salvaged since time's beginning for all of Jinni kind.

Raku pretty much would have been the heir to such a rite as creation, yet Saturday dud nothing but stand as a bodyguard and gloat beside his mistress. "Are you sure that your pets are up for the challenge of stopping an A class demon train?" Iyori broke the news to Ami as she grunted and dusted off her summer outfit. "I got it, that was before you decided to cheat; you're supposed to be a noble sensei! See cares that we both stop the yokai-

"STOP." Iyori put up a palm, walking in her battle kimono to Ami's face before pointing at the teen girl.

"That creature is stealing humans from this plane. It is nothing but a rogue demon. Don't try to give it a face and pity it, American brat . That creature would probably make you its strung-up attraction if it had the nerve. There is no negotiating its release. I demand you NOT use that mirror and I'll show you how to properly banish this target. Deal, Ami – san?"

"It's like my dad's cases…" Ami shook her heat, fists clenched as she shouted at Iyori's accusations of all life forms. "I'm not just from America, my mother was a princess of Tamaran! My sister is from the spirit world in the Norse. My little brother is a djinn that can create anything, and my older sister and twin…they saved and almost destroyed the world. Like...a dozen times." Ami panted. "And you?? How do you get off telling spirits who they are or can't be. Not guilty until further proven! It's in the book and you had better listen to modern sense! BAKA!"

"My lady!" Saturday intervened as Kaede took out her claws to defend her shouting charge. "Iyori – sempai, I will save those people and I will find out how to exorcize the one causing them all harm. Until then, you are wrong. Now, move. Out of. Our way."

"You are dooming us all with your rebellious –

Aya's moon ears picked up as the sound of a loud train whistle had her turn to the tracks. "Here. Move, all of you. Before –

Ami didn't see it as a tendril of ghostly magic grabbed at her arms, tugging her onto the platform and off of the first. The door opened and this entity, would not bundle! Others were in the same boat, save for Iyori and her allies as well as Kaede. Haru was not as lucky and ended up with the same arms pulling her into the train car.

"Miss!!" Saturday saw that this was a dangerous place if Aya failed to protect his contracted. He acted and levitate towards the train, trying to use wind to stop it. To no avail.

Saturday ran after his mistress as soon as Iyori and Aya had dashed for the tracks to meet the perpetrators. A few others seemed to look at the lights of the ghost train as it rolled in, not even screeching to a stop all entirely. "Aya? Come! We are beating this idiot at her own game. She won't win."

"I must advise you against this, Lady-

"No time, Saturday! Aya? Make us airborne." She pointed to the top of the ghost train. Its black smoke made a mountain of smog look clear as mist. That was its cover. Mist.

"Ah…. Kaede? Would you…. like a lift?" Saturday nervously knew she'd hiss at him, but in his world, it was polite to offer enemies that benefit of the doubt.

"I can handle my own, catapulting. Thanks." Sniffed the fox as she transformed and made her way to where Iyori was going to break out the hostages. Or, get magically spirited away with Ami and the others. Saturday could not leave however until his contract was "adjusted "by the holder. He groaned and sat cross legged by the platform. "If they are not back by midnight tonight, contracts be damned!" Shouted the jinni butler.

Ami felt her blurred eyes awaken as she opened them to see others doing the same. Some cowering, panicking. She assessed the situation while the conducting force cane through one door. He somehow, had no face.

He had a jaw like a lizard with jagged teeth, a coat and hat and a lantern that old school conductors wore from Ami's favorite film as a kid. Took place during the holidays. In the voice of two beings overlapping eerily, the mouth opened wide and started to speak.

~ Okay, our new favorite passengers. You've landed yourselves on the ride of your careers! Wanted to get away? Well? We can keep going for an eternity until you never have to think about your boring lives ever again! This train is supplied to keep you happy. Fed. Even to…. sleep on a bed of roses! Stay with us and we promise…it's one hell if a shock to know you aren't in the ground, my dear pass –

"W – dare?? You have got to be kidding!" One salary man looked at his watch. The time had stopped. "I'M NOT DEAD…." A teenager out after curfew rocked themselves in the corner. "I'm…I'm alive! This is all a big mess and we want out! Please!"

~ YOU ARE NOT GOING TO JUMP, IF YOU DID…. we'd have to check you off the list to the gates of…the underworld! ~

Ami gawked and scrambled to get up. Everyone else had looks od sheer terror in their faces, including the teen who was starting to crack.

Ami then saw Haru lying in a lump as a fox and crawled over to her. Picking up the sad little bundle, their magic was weak here. There were other forces at play….

~ You can fatten yourselves up and relax once we get there…our leader and mistress Ageha would really love to get to know all of you. ~

" Zakenna! This is insane! I'm getting off –

The door opened and the same arms from before shoved the man through it. A white light embracing his body as the others covered their faces, including Ami. His screams, fell silently away as the room became too quiet.

~ He won't get to meet my lady A…...You all be good now, and stay in your seats. Ah, and no pets on board… especially, doggies. ~

Ami whispered a spell as Haru to the demon appeared as a baby. Not a fox in her arms now. The conductor nodded with a humph and set off to the other doorway while keeping it shut by a dark force. The train. Was Iyori right? Was there no way of exorcizing the enemy this time??

She hugged Haru to her chest and tried to think. Her magic was weakened. Ok, but there had to be a way to get off this train car…

How?
