Chapter 5: Chemical Plant Zone
In the dimly lit chamber of the Organization's base, a tall, red-haired man clad in a black coat stood with a crystal ball before him. His emerald eyes, marked by purple reverse-teardrop shapes beneath each, glinted with curiosity and cunning. Beside him, a blonde-haired woman, equally imposing in her dark attire, observed the orb with a blend of amusement and disdain.
"You seem pretty intrigued by this Sora kid," the woman remarked, her tone dripping with sarcasm.
"Are you telling me you're not, Larxene?" the red-haired man responded, his voice smooth and confident.
Larxene giggled, a sound both sweet and sinister.
"Haven't decided yet, Axel... I think what intrigues me more is what you see in him."
Axel's lips curled into a smirk as he replied, "There was a time he became a Heartless. And if one becomes a Heartless—"
"They lose their minds and their feelings... They're consumed by the darkness," Larxene interjected, her green cyan eyes narrowing slightly.
"Right. But not Sora. He held on to his feelings, even as a Heartless. And there's only one other man who's been able to do just that," Axel explained, his tone growing more serious.
Larxene's interest piqued, her gaze sharpening.
"It's the strength of his heart... That's what interests you. Why the Keyblade chose Sora's heart."
"To unlock the mysteries of the heart. Isn't that the Organization's mission?" Axel replied, his eyes glinting with intrigue.
Larxene snickered, but her amusement was short-lived. From the shadows, a figure emerged—an indigo hedgehog with a dark, imposing presence. Terios stepped forward, the darkness still pulsing around him.
"Well, well, if it isn't Terios," Larxene sneered, her tone laced with contempt. "What are you doing here without with your master?"
Terios stood tall, his red eye gleaming with confidence.
"I have my orders, Larxene. Sonic's memories are in turmoil, especially concerning this Sora. But unlike him, I remember this boy quite well."
"Interesting. So the castle and Namine's manipulations are affecting the hedgehog too?" Axel remarked, intrigued by this development.
"Precisely," Terios confirmed. "But more importantly, the distortions in time are proving quite effective. Sonic is experiencing the same chaos Sora is. But..."
"But?" Axel prompted, his curiosity piqued.
Terios smirked, a glint of arrogance in his eye.
"At least I'm not making Sonic play with cards like a child..." the hedgehog said mockingly.
Larxene's eyes narrowed dangerously, her posture shifting as if ready to strike.
"Watch your mouth, rodent," she sneered. "You're not above the rest of us."
Terios met her glare with unwavering confidence.
"Maybe not, but I'm certainly more effective."
The air grew tense, Axel feeling the sting of Terios's words. He looked to the hedgehog, his eyes sharp.
"Not everyone can bend time and space, Terios. But remember, that power can be taken away," Axel said, snapping his fingers, "just like that."
"At least I have what you all seek," Terios muttered, turning his back on the two Organization members.
Larxene's fingers twitched, sparks of electricity dancing at her fingertips, but Axel placed a calming hand on her shoulder.
"Let him be, Larxene. He's riding high now, but everyone falls eventually."
Terios glanced back, his eyes gleaming with triumph.
"We'll see about that, Axel. For now, I have a mission to complete. Enjoy your games while I do the real work for the Doctor and our leader."
With that, Terios vanished into the darkness, leaving Axel and Larxene in the eerie glow of the crystal ball.
Larxene seethed, her teeth clenched.
"He better watch his back," she remarked, frustration boiling over her.
Axel sighed, shaking his head.
"Let him play his game. We'll see who truly holds the cards when this is over."
The room fell silent, the tension lingering as the two Organization members returned to their watch, the crystal ball reflecting the twisted fate of their enemies.
WHITE SPACE
Sonic and his mysterious ally walked out of the dark corridor and back into the void of White Space. The two turned to see the once blank, cold, and lifeless Traverse Town now restored, vibrant with full color and life. The hub was safe and restored, thanks to Sonic.
"It's good to see this past adventure having some color back in it," Sonic remarked, a satisfied smile spreading across his face. He placed his hands on his hips and looked proudly at the now colorful past adventure.
The man stood next to him, his hands still behind his back. His uncovered eye, sharp and calculating, glanced down at the hedgehog.
"Do you feel a memory coming back?" he asked. "Does it feel like it's awakening?"
Sonic pondered the question, scratching his chin thoughtfully. He was searching his mind for any familiar sensations.
"I remember running through the hotel and seeing those colored doors. It's where I got to know Leon, Yuffie, and..." He trailed off, his brow furrowing.
"And?" the man prompted, his voice gentle but insistent.
"And that kid..." Sonic said, frustration evident in his tone. "Gosh, what was his name?!"
"It will come in time. Don't fret," the man reassured him, turning his attention to the horizon of their location. "Perhaps saving another past adventure will bring back more of your memories."
"I really hope so," Sonic retorted, a hint of worry creeping into his voice. "I feel like the weight of not remembering isn't just about forgetting someone, but it's affecting my own past memories too."
"This realm is indeed a prison of the mind," the man said calmly, his tone serious. "Keep saving past adventures, and you'll find the pieces of your past falling back into place."
"Right," Sonic affirmed with a determined nod. "So, what was it you wanted to show me?"
"Ah yes," the man replied, beginning to walk ahead. "Follow me. I need to show you the next hub point, but there's something else you need to see."
Sonic followed the man, his mind racing with questions and anticipation. The man stopped and turned to the next hub, gesturing for Sonic to look. Sonic's eyes widened as he took in the sight before him: the Chemical Plant Zone. Once a bustling, vibrant area filled with neon lights and the hum of machinery, it was now eerily void of color and life. The pipes and platforms stood in stark monochrome, the once bright purple waters now a murky, lifeless grey.
"So this is the next place I need to save," Sonic remarked, his voice tinged with a mix of recognition and determination.
"Yes," the man replied, his tone grave. "But, there is something, or rather someone, you need to save as well."
"What do you mean?" Sonic asked, his etched with confusion.
The man stepped back, revealing a sight that made Sonic's heart skip a beat. Standing perfectly still like a colorless and void statue was Tails, his two tails frozen mid-swish. The fox looked like a work of art, every detail captured perfectly, but his face was contorted with fear, his eyes wide and his arm extended as if reaching out for help.
"TAILS?!" Sonic shouted, rushing forward.
Tails remained unmoving, his expression frozen in a moment of terror. Sonic reached out, his hands trembling as he tried to comprehend the sight of his best friend turned into a lifeless statue.
"Come on, buddy, it's me!" Sonic pleaded desperately, shaking the statue hard. The lifeless form of Tails remained rigid, unmoving, and devoid of the spark that once filled him with life.
"I'm afraid your friend is trapped," the man interjected, his voice calm but tinged with sympathy. "Terios's manipulation has drained his essence and locked him in this void."
"But, but why?" Sonic asked, his voice cracking with desperation. He couldn't take his eyes off his best friend's predicament. "Tails hasn't done anything wrong!"
The man sighed, his gaze fixed on the colorless form of Tails.
"Terios's power is not about right or wrong, Sonic. It's about control. By trapping your friend Tails, Terios ensures that your spirit is weakened. He knows how much you rely on your friends, how much they mean to you. This is a way to break you, to stop you from thwarting the Organization's plans."
Sonic's fists clenched, his body trembling with a mix of anger and determination.
"Well, he's not going to succeed. I'll save Tails and everyone else he's taken. I won't let him win."
The man nodded, his expression one of approval.
"Then you know what you must do," he exclaimed. "Restore the life and colour to this Chemical Plant. Defeat the enemies that infest it and stabilize the distortions. Only then can Tails be freed from this state."
Sonic took a deep breath, steeling himself for the challenge ahead.
"Alright. I'll do whatever it takes!" he said confidently, his courage shining through.
The Blue Blur took one last look at Tails, his heart aching at the sight of his friend frozen in fear.
"Hang in there, buddy. I'll get you out of this."
Turning back to the man, Sonic's green eyes burned with resolve.
"Where do I start?" he asked, looking up to the man's one visible eye.
The man gestured towards the entrance of the Chemical Plant Zone, the dark, twisted pathways awaiting Sonic's intervention.
"Begin by reclaiming the energy of this place. Each step you take, each enemy you defeat, will bring you closer to restoring Tails and the others."
"Got it. Let's bring some life back to this place," Sonic said with a stern nod.
With that, Sonic sprinted forward into the Chemical Plant Zone, ready to face whatever challenges awaited him. The weight of his mission pressed down on him, but he knew he had to succeed—for Tails, for his friends, and for his past, present and future.
As the man watched Sonic enter the shimmering portal of the hub, he turned to the statue of Tails and looked at the two-tailed mobian. His voice softened as he began to monologue, his tone reflective and somber.
"Friendship is a powerful force," he mused, his gaze unwavering. "It binds hearts together, transcending time and space. Even in the face of darkness and despair, it is the light of friendship that guides us, that gives us strength to endure the trials we face. Tails, you are not merely a friend to Sonic; you are his anchor, his confidant. In this void, your presence alone is a testament to the bond you share."
The man sighed, a hint of melancholy in his voice.
"May the strength of your friendship be the beacon that leads Sonic to victory. For in this realm of shadows and uncertainty, it is the unwavering light of your bond that will ultimately guide him through the darkness."
Suddenly, the man heard footsteps echoing through the void. Intrigued, he turned to face the source of the sound, his expression shifting to one of curiosity. The shadows parted slightly, revealing the silhouettes of two familiar figures.
The man's visible eye widened ever so slightly in recognition, and a small, amused smile tugged at the corner of his lips.
"Well, this just got interesting," he said dryly, his tone laced with a hint of irony. "Looks like the past is catching up with us in more ways than one."
Out of the shimmering portal, Sonic entered the starting point of the Chemical Plant Zone, his green eyes scanning the industrial landscape before him. There were no signs of nature here—no trees, no grass, no flowers. The stage was dominated by machines and structures. Silos and gigantic girders towered overhead, tanks and pipes snaked through the area, cranes loomed in the distance, and warehouses stood like silent sentinels. All of this was set beneath a dark sky covered by ominous crimson clouds.
Sonic paused for a moment, taking in the sights and sounds. The air was thick with the smell of oil and metal, a sharp, almost acrid scent that filled his lungs with every breath. The ground beneath his feet vibrated faintly with the hum of machinery, and the occasional hiss of steam punctuated the otherwise eerie silence. The sky was a foreboding shade of red, casting an unsettling glow over everything.
He felt a wave of déjà vu wash over him as he continued to look around the area.
"This place... it feels like that plant back home," he muttered to himself. "But something's different. Could it be Terios's manipulation, just like in Traverse Town?"
He shook his head, clearing his thoughts.
"No time to dwell on that now. I've got to save Tails."
With a determined nod, Sonic focused up and shot off with a dash of speed to save this place and his friend, Tails.
CHEMICAL PLANT ZONE
Music: Chemical Plant Zone - Modern Sonic - Sonic Generations
Sonic's journey through the zone began with him running down two parallel paths, each filled with Freestyle Trick-inducing gimmicks and special ramps. The pathways twisted and turned, allowing Sonic to build up speed and perform dazzling tricks that sent sparks flying. The smell of oil and metal in the air was overwhelming.
"The smell is giving me phantom scents. It's definitely like the plant back home!" the blue hedgehog remarked.
As he sped along the high path, Sonic executed a series of flips and spins, his body a blur of motion. The ramps propelled him into the air, and he used the momentum to vault over obstacles and Heartless alike. Below him, on the low path, Shadow Heartless and Soldier Heartless materialised out of thin air, their dark forms flickering ominously. The Soldier Heartless jittered and clattered, their armor making eerie, metallic sounds as they moved, a clear sign of Terios's manipulation.
"Looks like Terios has been busy," Sonic muttered, narrowing his eyes at the enemies ahead. "Time to clean up this mess."
With a burst of speed, Sonic launched into a Homing Attack, targeting the nearest Soldier Heartless. He hit it with precision, the impact sending the creature's armor clattering as it dispersed into wisps of darkness. Sonic immediately chained his attack to the next Heartless, his movements fluid and relentless.
Each hit was powerful and precise. The clang of his strikes against the Soldier Heartless echoed through the industrial landscape, mixing with the constant hum of machinery. The Shadow Heartless, with their quicker movements, tried to dodge, but Sonic was faster. He zigzagged between them, his Homing Attacks a blur of blue energy and determination.
The Soldier Heartless attempted to regroup, their armor clattering as they formed a defensive line. Sonic grinned, his eyes gleaming with resolve. He launched himself into a Spin Dash, the force of his speed creating a shockwave that scattered the Heartless, their armor flying apart before dissolving into darkness.
"Too slow!" Sonic quipped, leaping into the air and landing on a high platform.
From his vantage point, he could see more Heartless emerging from the shadows, their numbers seemingly endless. Undeterred, Sonic raced along the path, his every move calculated to maintain his momentum. He vaulted over a set of pipes, spun through the air, and landed with perfect precision.
Another wave of Soldier Heartless appeared, their forms jittering as they clanked towards him. Sonic didn't hesitate. He charged forward, his body a whirlwind of blue and white. Each Homing Attack was executed with pinpoint accuracy, his strikes dismantling the Heartless one by one.
With the immediate threat cleared, Sonic sped towards a large tube that marked the next part of his journey. He leapt inside, letting gravity take over as he skydived down the massive shaft. Strings of blue blobs, reminiscent of the chemical energy that powered the plant, flew around him. Sonic expertly maneuvered through the airborne obstacles, twisting and turning with unparalleled agility.
The familiar hum of machinery and the acrid scent of chemicals filled the air, triggering memories of his previous encounters in similar environments. Sonic's mind flashed back to the times he had navigated the hazardous zones of the Chemical Plant with Tails, each time relying on their speed and reflexes to see them through.
"Hang in there, Tails," Sonic thought, his eyes burning with resolve. "I'm coming for you."
He tucked into a tight spin, dodging clusters of blue blobs with ease. The blobs were volatile, remnants of the plant's raw energy, and Sonic knew from experience that even a slight brush against them could be disastrous. His movements were a blur, a testament to his skill and precision honed over countless adventures.
As he descended further, the shaft opened up into a wider chamber filled with more complex arrays of the chemical blobs, pipes, and moving platforms. Sonic's senses were on high alert, every nerve in his body primed for the challenge. He weaved through the obstacles, his mind focused and clear.
"This place really brings back memories," Sonic muttered to himself, deftly avoiding a particularly dense cluster of blobs. "But Terios has twisted it into something else entirely."
The rhythmic beat of the plant's machinery grew louder, mingling with the hiss of steam and the crackle of energy. Sonic could feel the pulse of the zone, a living, breathing entity corrupted by Terios's manipulation. He knew he had to restore it to its original state to save Tails and the others.
As he neared the bottom of the shaft, Sonic braced himself for the next phase. The ground rushed up to meet him, and he landed with a graceful roll, immediately ready to spring into action. He glanced around, an unsettling sense of déjà vu washing over him. But before he could gather his thoughts, it happened—the rise of the Mega Mack, the dreaded purple water.
The Mega Mack began to bubble up from the depths, filling the chamber. Sonic's eyes widened in alarm as the memory of this old nightmare came rushing back. The menacing purple liquid was a dangerous remnant of the Chemical Plant's hazardous environment, and its rapid rise was nothing short of terrifying.
"Not this stuff again!" Sonic exclaimed, his heart pounding. The Mega Mack was already lapping at his ankles, and he knew he had to move fast.
Scanning his surroundings, Sonic spotted a series of walls that could provide an escape route. Without a moment's hesitation, he launched himself into a wall jump, his feet pushing off with precision. The Mega Mack was rising quickly, its liquid, gelatinous waves churning with a sinister energy. The chemical stench was overpowering, a toxic mix that made his nose burn and his eyes water.
"Oh man, this purple water is a nightmare!" Sonic muttered, his voice tight with urgency.
The walls were slick with condensation, adding to the challenge. Sonic's muscles strained as he pushed off each surface, his reflexes and agility put to the test. He could feel the Mega Mack's malevolent presence just below him, the memory of its touch sending shivers down his spine.
"This is too close for comfort!" Sonic thought, his mind racing as fast as his feet.
He could hear the gurgling roar of the rising Mega Mack, a haunting sound that spurred him on. His focus narrowed to the immediate task of reaching higher ground, the world around him a blur of motion and purple dread.
"Not today, Mega Mack!" Sonic muttered through gritted teeth, his voice tinged with determination.
He launched himself from wall to wall, each leap carrying him higher above the rising tide. The acrid smell of chemicals filled his nostrils, a haunting reminder of the plant's hazardous environment.
Sonic's fear mingled with his resolve, creating a potent mix of adrenaline and focus. He propelled himself upward, each jump more urgent than the last. The Mega Mack continued its relentless ascent, but Sonic's speed and skill kept him just ahead of the rising tide.
With a final, powerful leap, Sonic cleared the top of the chamber and landed on a solid platform, his chest heaving with exertion. He glanced down at the Mega Mack, which had halted just below him, the sinister purple liquid churning angrily as if denied its prey.
"Not this time," Sonic said, his voice firm despite the lingering fear. "I'm not taking a plunge into the depths like last time."
Just as Sonic was about to start running again, a blaring sound of an alarm pierced the air, deafening and urgent. The hedgehog's pointed ears rang, and he looked around in confusion.
"What the heck is that?" he muttered, looking around for answers.
However, Sonic's observations became clear soon enough. The rise of the Mega Mack had triggered a chain reaction. Pipes burst open, spewing steam and sparks. Gears ground to a halt with screeching protests, and the entire plant seemed to groan under the strain.
A mechanical voice echoed through the Chemical Plant, it was cold and emotionless.
"Warning: Plant Meltdown. T-minus 60 seconds."
"Oh shi—" Sonic started to exclaim, but his words were cut off by a nearby explosion.
Flames and debris shot into the air, and the ground trembled beneath his red and white shoes.
"I gotta move!" Sonic shouted, his adrenaline surging. He dashed forward, the plant around him erupting into chaos.
Explosions rocked the structure, sending metal fragments and clouds of smoke billowing into the air. The smell of burning oil and chemicals filled his nostrils, making his eyes water.
"Warning: Plant Meltdown. T-minus 45 seconds," the mechanical voice intoned.
Sonic pushed himself harder, his feet a red and white blur as he raced along the collapsing pathways. He activated his boost, a surge of energy propelling him forward at breakneck speed. Shadow Heartless materialised in his path, but Sonic barreled through them, the sheer force of his speed scattering them like leaves in a hurricane. The Heartless were no match for his unstoppable momentum, disintegrating into wisps of darkness as he plowed through, his determination blazing brighter with every step.
"Warning: Plant Meltdown. T-minus 30 seconds."
The ground beneath him shook violently, cracks spider-webbing across the surface. Sonic leaped over a gaping chasm, the edges crumbling away into the Mega Mack below. He landed on a tilting platform and kept running, his eyes scanning for any sign of an exit.
Ahead, he spotted the Goal Ring, a glowing beacon of safety amidst the destruction. It was surrounded by a shimmering barrier, a safe zone in the midst of the plant's self-destruction.
"Warning: Plant Meltdown. T-minus 20 seconds."
Sonic's heart pounded in his chest as he neared the Goal Ring. Explosions erupted all around him, the heat of the flames licking at his heels. The path to the Goal Ring was fraught with obstacles—collapsing platforms, falling debris, and more Heartless.
"Warning: Plant Meltdown. T-minus 10 seconds," the mechanical voice droned.
With a final burst of speed, Sonic dodged a falling beam and sprinted towards the Goal Ring. He leaped over a crumbling section of the path, launching himself into the air and soaring towards the glowing ring. Below him, Heartless scrambled to reach him but were quickly thwarted by the chaos.
A large chunk of debris smashed into a group of Shadow Heartless, sending them flying and dissipating back into darkness. Another explosion sent a fireball rolling through a horde of Soldier Heartless, their startled expressions almost comical as they were engulfed and vanished with a pop.
"Warning: Plant Meltdown. T-minus 5 seconds," the voice intoned.
Sonic flew through the Goal Ring, the energy field enveloping him in a protective embrace. He landed safely on the other side, skidding to a halt just as the Chemical Plant behind him erupted in a massive explosion. The shockwave sent ripples through the ground, causing it to tremble violently. Sonic could feel the force of the blast, but within the barrier, he was safe.
He turned to look at the devastation, the once formidable Chemical Plant now reduced to smoldering ruins. Heartless were being flung left and right by the explosions, their forms disintegrating into wisps of darkness. One particularly unlucky Shadow Heartless was launched into the air by a burst of steam, spinning comically before poofing out of existence.
"That was way too close," Sonic muttered, catching his breath. "But I did it. I saved this place, and now I have to save Tails."
Sonic's eyes blazed with determination as he steeled himself for the next phase of his journey. The memory of the Mega Mack's rise and the plant's chaotic meltdown lingered in his mind, a testament to the challenges he had faced and conquered. With the Goal Ring now behind him, Sonic knew the path ahead would be perilous, but his resolve was unwavering.
"Hang tight, Tails," Sonic whispered, his voice filled with unyielding resolve. "I'm on my way."

ETHERAL ROOM
Terios emerged from the swirling darkness into the ethereal room where the blonde hair girl sat, her pencil moving gracefully across the sketchbook in her lap. The room, bathed in ghostly white light, felt almost serene compared to the chaotic world going inside the base and White Space.
The girl, paused in her drawing as she sensed Terios's presence. Her blue eyes filled with a mix of fear and apprehension as she looked up at the indigo hedgehog. His red eye glowed ominously, and his body pulsed with dark energy.
"Terios," she whispered, her voice trembling. "What do you want?"
Terios stepped forward, his movements deliberate and slow.
"Sonic is proving to be more resilient than anticipated," he said, his voice low and commanding. "I need something stronger to break him."
The girl's hand tightened around her pencil, her fear evident.
"I'm already helping Axel deal with Sora," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper. "I can't... I shouldn't..."
Terios's eyes narrowed, his patience wearing thin.
"I don't care!" he snapped, the dark energy around him flaring. "I need your help to stop Sonic. You will do as I say... Naminé!"
Naminé flinched, her eyes widening in fear. The pencil in her hand snapped under the pressure, and she took a step back.
"Please, Terios," she pleaded, her voice shaking. "Don't make me do this. It's too much..."
For a moment, Terios's anger seemed to subside. He looked at Naminé, and something flickered in his gaze—regret, perhaps, or something deeper. He took a step back, the dark energy around him calming. His mind seemed to drift as a false memory emerged, unbidden and vivid.
"Save... them," Terios muttered, his voice barely audible, as if speaking the words brought both clarity and confusion.
The memory faded as quickly as it had appeared, leaving Terios disoriented. He blinked, and Naminé was back to her usual self, sitting there with her sketchbook, looking at him with a mix of fear and curiosity.
"Who... who needs to be saved?" Naminé asked softly, her voice trembling but her eyes locked onto his.
Terios shook his head, trying to clear the haze.
"Forget it," he said abruptly, though his tone lacked its former harshness. "Just focus on your task."
Naminé hesitated, sensing the conflict within Terios.
"You saw something, didn't you?" she pressed gently, her fear giving way to genuine concern. "Something about your past?"
Terios turned away, his expression hidden.
"It's nothing," he said, but the edge in his voice was gone.
For a moment, the imposing figure seemed almost vulnerable, softened by whatever vision had just gripped him. Naminé watched him, her own thoughts swirling, a mystery that seemed to tie their fates together. She felt a strange connection to Terios, something more than just the roles they played in the Organization's plans.
"Terios," she began cautiously, "if there's something I can do to help... if there's someone who needs saving..."
He snapped back to reality, the moment of vulnerability passing.
"Just do your job, Naminé," he said, though his tone was not as forceful as before. "I'll handle the rest."
With that, he vanished into the shadows, leaving Naminé alone with her thoughts. The room fell silent once more, the echoes of their conversation hanging in the air.
As she resumed her drawing, Naminé couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to Terios than met the eye. His cryptic words had a deeper connection, one that might hold the key to their intertwined destinies. She picked up her pencil, her resolve strengthened.
"I need to understand," she whispered to herself. "For everyone's sake."
Naminé's connection to Terios was a mystery, but it was one she was determined to unravel. She resumed her drawing, her mind filled with questions and a newfound resolve. Terios might control space and time, but Naminé held the key to unlocking the truth—a truth that could change everything.
[WN: Cryptical and mysterious and we are only 5 chapters in. Who is them? What is Terios's connection to those people he needs to save? Is Terios more than that meets the eye?
