Chapter 6: Timeless Heroes & The Speedway
WHITE SPACE:
Whilst Sonic was dealing with matters at the Chemical Plant, the mysterious man had been approached by two unlikely allies, drawn in by the complications of spacetime. The man with red bandages wrapped around his face, walked along the white void in his usual majestic manner, hands behind his back, seemingly speaking to the newcomers who had appeared before him.
"Now then, I presume you two have many questions about this place?" the man said confidently as he walked.
The mysterious guide stopped and turned slowly, his head tilting downwards. His uncovered eye took a good look at the duo standing before him. The figures were unmistakable: a shorter, rounder version of Sonic and a younger, smaller version of Tails. The variant of the Blue Blur stood with his arms folded and foot tapping impatiently, while Tails looked up with wide, curious eyes.
"So," the man continued, a hint of amusement in his voice, "Are you visitors from the past, or perhaps another timeline?"
Classic Sonic's foot tapping grew more insistent, his body language demanding answers. The man chuckled softly as he turned to the two tailed fox.
"I'm taking your friend is not much of a talker?" he remarked, slightly amused
Classic Tails stepped forward, his twin tails twitching slightly.
"Well actually, Sonic doesn't talk, I'm afraid. But his body language and facial expressions communicate for him."
The man nodded, intrigued by the mute hedgehog. Classic Sonic looked at him with a confused expression, his features furrowing.
"Tell me, young fox," the man said, his gaze still fixed on Classic Tails, "what happened to bring you here?"
Classic Tails shifted nervously, glancing at Classic Sonic before speaking.
"We were just going about our usual adventures when everything started to go weird. One moment we were racing through Green Hill, and the next, everything shifted."
"Shifted? How so?" The man questioned.
Classic Tails took a deep breath and began to explain.
"We were in the middle of a run, enjoying the familiar loop-de-loops and jumps, when suddenly the sky darkened, and the ground beneath us started to tremble. It was like reality itself was breaking apart. Sonic and I tried to hold on, but we were pulled into this strange void and ended up here."
Classic Sonic unfolded his arms and stepped forward, nodding in agreement with Tails's account. He gestured animatedly, trying to convey the chaos and confusion of the moment. The man watched with keen interest, noting the silent communication between the two.
"It sounds like a spacetime fluctuation, caused by Terios's actions," the man mused.
"Terios?" Classic Tails asked, looking to Classic Sonic who seemed equally surprised. The blue hedgehog shrugged with a comically exaggerated gesture.
"Terios is a force created by the Organization. He has the ability to manipulate past events with false alterations. He can alter the past and, dare I say, even erase time and space itself, if given the chance..." the man explained, his tone serious.
The two looked shocked by this revelation. Classic Sonic did a small jump as he gasped, his eyes wide with surprise.
"That sounds serious!" Tails remarked in disbelief.
"Indeed, my young friend," the man retorted with a slight nod.
"And this Organization you mentioned, they are the ones behind it all?" Classic Tails questioned.
"Yes," The man replied with a slow nod. "The Organization is a group with their own agenda or agendas. However, in this instance, Terios is their tool, their enforcer, if you will."
Classic Sonic frowned, tapping his foot impatiently, his mind racing to piece together this new information.
"So, did Terios and the Organization create this place?" Tails asked, gesturing around the void. "Is this their doing? Also, why are all these places void of color? What happened here?"
The man nodded, appreciating their curiosity and explained further.
"This place you see around you is called 'White Space'. It is located within the Organization's stronghold. However, the void and the many hubs located here," the man gestured with one of his hands, "these are remnants of different timelines and realities affected by Terios's manipulations."
Classic Sonic's frown deepened as he looked around at the lifeless, colorless hubs surrounding them. Classic Tails's eyes were wide with both curiosity and concern.
"So, he's sucked all the life out of these places?" Tails asked, his voice tinged with a mix of dread and determination.
"Terios's ability to manipulate time and space has left these zones in a state of flux," the man explained. "He alters past events, creating false memories and distorting reality. The result is these lifeless, colorless remnants you see. Your presence here is a testament to the severity of the situation, but also an opportunity to restore balance."
Classic Sonic gave a small hop and clenched his fists, his determined expression showing he was ready for action. Classic Tails nodded, understanding the gravity of their mission.
"We need to fix this," Tails said, his voice filled with resolve. "But where do we even start?"
However, before the man could respond to the young fox, a nearby portal seemed to come to life, ripping through the void. The tear and noise of this paradox drew the attention of the trio, who turned to see what was going on.
"Interesting..." the man remarked, his seeing eye looking with intrigue.
"What's going on?" Tails said, his voice tinted with caution.
Classic Sonic looked with curiosity as well, seeing the portal shimmer seemingly from out of nowhere. Suddenly, the portal began to shape and twist into a new hub location. The white void around them started to fill with details, forming a landscape that the hedgehog recognised immediately.
The new hub took the shape of a massive urban area, with towering infrastructure and unique, intricate speedways that twisted and turned through the cityscape. The sprawling metropolis was eerily lifeless, just like the other places in White Space, its vibrant energy drained to a ghostly monochrome. Sonic jumped up and down, pointing excitedly at the scene, his eyes wide with recognition.
The man observed Sonic's reaction with intrigue.
"It seems your friend might know this place?" the man mused, turning to Classic Tails.
The young fox pondered, placing his hand on his chin, his two tails moving up and down in thought.
"I'm not entirely sure, but it looks like somewhere Sonic visited during his early adventures, before we met."
Sonic nodded emphatically, confirming Tails's speculation.
The man turned his gaze back to the lifeless location, his expression thoughtful.
"It is truly fascinating to see this place appear in White Space," the man mused, his voice echoing in the empty expanse. "However, it seems another past event or location is being manipulated by Terios and the Organization."
Suddenly, close to the new lifeless hub, a statue began to materialise. As it took form, the trio could make out the figure of someone trapped in the limbo of this past adventure. The statue captured their mid-motion, a look of determination and concern frozen on the trapped soul's face. Their eyes, once full of life, were now blank and empty.
Sonic, his curiosity piqued, walked up to the statue and knocked on it gently. The sound was like someone hitting solid rock, the hollow thud resonating through the still air. He frowned, his expression a mix of confusion and concern.
Tails, placing his hand on his chin, studied the statue closely as his two tails moved up and down slowly.
"You know, that looks like our friend Amy from back home, but she looks different," Tails remarked, his voice tinged with worry.
The man stepped forward, his presence commanding and authoritative.
"This statue is indeed Amy, your friend from another time. She has been trapped in this state due to Terios's manipulations. It is a part of your mission to aid Sonic's variant and save your friends from this limbo."
Sonic and Tails exchanged shocked glances. Sonic's eyes widened, and he gestured animatedly as if to say, "Wait, another me?"
"Yes my blue friend, there is indeed another Sonic," the man affirmed with a nod, his voice heavy with gravity. "Your counterpart is currently at the Chemical Plant, fighting to restore balance. He then turned dramatically to face Tails, his eye piercing through the dim light, "And save you."
Tails staggered back a step, his eyes wide with shock.
"Me?" he stammered, the weight of the revelation sinking in. The idea of another version of himself, out there battling to save him, was almost too much to comprehend.
The man stepped forward, his presence commanding and reassuring.
"Yes," he said, his voice steady and strong. "Sonic's counterpart is risking everything to restore balance and save his friends from the distortions that Terios has created. This is no small task, but you are not alone in this fight."
Classic Sonic's eyes burned with determination, his body language exuding readiness and resolve. He clenched his fists and gave a sharp nod, showing his readiness to help in any way he could.
"I see Sonic is raring to go?" the man said, his voice steady and encouraging.
Tails looked at Sonic with concern, the weight of their mission pressing on his young shoulders. Sensing his friend's unease, Sonic turned and placed a reassuring hand on Tails's shoulder, his expression confident and unwavering. It was as if he were silently saying, "We can do this!"
"So, what do we need to do?" Tails asked, his voice steadier now, bolstered by Sonic's resolve and the man's words.
The man nodded approvingly, "You must start by exploring this hub," he explained, gesturing to the lifeless urban landscape before them. "Find the source of the distortion and neutralise it. But be warned, Terios has been placing enemies and foes that do not belong in these past events. They are there to impede your progress and sow further chaos. You must be on your guard at all times."
Classic Sonic's expression grew even more determined. He stood tall, ready to face the challenges ahead.
"Terios is a cunning foe," the man continued. "He manipulates time and space, creating false memories and altering reality itself. His power is great, but it is not infallible. Together, you can overcome the distortions and restore these timelines to their true state."
Tails nodded, his twin tails twitching with renewed resolve.
"We're ready," he said, looking at Sonic. "We'll do whatever it takes to set things right."
"Remember, your actions will have far-reaching consequences," the man explained. "Trust in your abilities and in each other. The strength and spirit needed to overcome this crisis transcends time itself."
With a shared nod of resolve, Sonic and Tails turned to face the distorted urban landscape. The lifeless city loomed before them, a stark reminder of the task at hand. Yet, with their combined strength and determination, they knew they could overcome whatever lay in their path and restore the worlds affected by Terios's manipulations.
As they stepped forward and entered the shimmering portal entrance to the hub, they were ready to face the trials of this distorted urban landscape. The man watched them with a mix of approval and determination.
MEANWHILE:
Naminé sat quietly in her secluded room, her sketchbook open on her lap. Her pencil moved almost on its own, guided by an unseen force as she created dark and mysterious images on the paper. Shadows seemed to creep across the page, coalescing into a sinister form with piercing red eyes that glowed malevolently from the darkness. The sight of these eyes sent a shiver down her spine, a chilling premonition of danger lurking in the shadows.
She paused, her mind swirling with the unsettling images. Taking a deep breath, Naminé began to draw again, her pencil strokes more deliberate this time. A new form emerged, cutting through the darkness: a radiant blue object, its light shining brightly against the encroaching shadows. The blue glow seemed to push back the malevolent presence, a beacon of hope amidst the gloom.
Her eyes widened slightly as she realized what she had drawn. The images on her sketchbook weren't just random doodles; they were reflections of the manipulated hub worlds. Her drawings, though cryptic, hinted at the twisted events unfolding within the corrupted timelines.
Sonic and Tails exited the shimmering portal and found themselves in a place from Sonic's past. The hedgehog paused, his eyes narrowing as he took in the surroundings. This was Stardust Speedway, but it was different from what he remembered. The once vibrant city, known for its dazzling lights and sleek architecture, was now a dark, grotty version of itself. The towering skyscrapers were covered in rust and grime, and the flickering neon lights cast eerie shadows on the crumbling infrastructure. The air was thick with a sense of decay, and the sky was a perpetual twilight, tinged with a sickly green hue.
Sonic looked around, his features furrowed in confusion. Tails, equally bewildered, scratched his head. The roads, once smooth and sleek, were now cracked and overgrown with twisted metal vines. The once rhythmic hum of the city's machinery was now a discordant symphony of creaks and groans.
"Sonic, isn't this Stardust Speedway?" the fox questioned. "I thought you saved Little Planet?"
Sonic nodded, the memory of his past victory fresh in his mind. He recalled the vibrant race against Metal Sonic, the bright, bustling energy of the city. But now, it was a stark contrast to what he once knew. The vibrant blues and purples were replaced with dark, muted tones. But then it clicked with Tails.
"Oh yeah, remember what that man said about Terios creating alternate events and distorting reality?"
Sonic nodded again, understanding dawning on him. Terios's manipulations had twisted this place into a shadow of its former self. Just as they were processing this information, they saw movement in the shadows. Emerging from the darkness were foes they had never seen before: Shadow Heartless. Their sinister forms twisted and writhed as they approached, their yellow eyes glowing with malice.
"Ah, what are those things?" Tails remarked, his eyes widening in alarm.
Sonic wasted no time. With a determined expression, he launched himself into action. He leapt into the air, charging a Drop Dash. In midair, he curled into a ball, and as soon as he touched the ground, he launched into a Spin Dash, his body becoming a blur of blue energy. He charged straight at the small horde of Shadow Heartless, his speed and agility making him a formidable force.
The first Heartless barely had time to react before Sonic plowed through it, his Spin Dash slicing through the dark entity with ease. He ricocheted off a nearby wall, using the momentum to take out another two Heartless in quick succession. The dark creatures disintegrated into wisps of shadow as Sonic's attack hit them.
He continued his assault, bouncing off walls and obstacles, each Spin Dash precise and powerful. He moved with a fluidity that spoke of years of experience, his every motion calculated to maximize damage. The remaining Heartless, sensing their impending defeat, tried to swarm him, but Sonic was too fast. He unleashed another Drop Dash, hitting its mark with pinpoint accuracy.
Within moments, the small horde of Shadow Heartless was reduced to nothing, their dark forms dissolving into the ether. Sonic dusted off his hands with a confident smirk. Tails watched in awe, his earlier confusion replaced by admiration.
"Wow, Sonic! You made that look easy!"
Sonic gave a thumbs-up, his eyes shining with determination. He gestured forward, indicating that they needed to keep moving.
"You're right, we have to fix this place!" Tails said, determined to aid his best friend in fixing the mess around them.
However, before the dynamic duo could start their adventure, a robotic voice echoed from the darkness, seemingly mocking the blue hedgehog. The voice was cold and metallic, laced with a sinister edge.
"So, you're back for more?" the voice taunted. "Pathetic."
Sonic's expression turned to one of annoyance as he turned towards the source of the voice. Tails's eyes widened in recognition.
"It's Metal Sonic!" the fox remarked.
From the shadows emerged Metal Sonic, his red eyes glowing menacingly. The mechanical doppelgänger of Sonic hovered slightly above the ground, his metallic body reflecting the eerie neon lights of the corrupted Stardust Speedway. His presence radiated hostility and malice.
"I thought you were no more. But it seems you can't stay down for long!" Metal Sonic said, his voice dripping with contempt.
Sonic looked confused, his features furrowing as he tried to piece together this twisted reality. Tails, realising the implication, spoke up, his voice tinged with dread.
"This must be a timeline where Metal Sonic won and you... you lost."
Tails trailed off, not wanting to think about what had happened to the Sonic of this timeline. The thought of his best friend being defeated and what that could mean was too much to bear. Sonic's face shifted through a range of emotions: confusion, frustration, and finally, resolve. He clenched his fists, ready to take on this new challenge.
"So, you want another race?" Metal Sonic taunted, his voice dripping with malice. "I will show you once and for all, I am the real Sonic!"
With that, Metal Sonic shot off into the distance, his metallic form a blur against the dark, twisted landscape of Stardust Speedway. Without hesitation, Sonic gave chase, his speed matching that of his mechanical counterpart. The air crackled with tension as the two rivals raced through the corrupted city.
Tails, taken aback by the sudden start of the race, called out, "Wait for me, Sonic!"
The two tailed fox sprinted after them, his twin tails spinning furiously to keep up with the incredible speed of the two Sonic's.
STARDUST SPEEDWAY - BAD FUTURE
METAL SONIC
Music: Stardust Speedway - Bad Future - Sonic Generations
The race between Sonic and his metal counterpart turned into what seemed to be a high-speed chase through the twisted, corrupted streets of Stardust Speedway. Metal Sonic flew overhead, his metallic form gleaming ominously in the dim light. He attacked relentlessly, his red eyes glowing with malicious intent as he hurled everything he had at Sonic. The air crackled with tension as the two raced neck and neck.
Metal Sonic unleashed his Ring Spark Field, electricity crackling around him and shooting out in deadly arcs. Sonic dodged and weaved through the attacks, his agility and speed keeping him just ahead of the onslaught. Metal Sonic then flew to the side of the speedway, snapping off street lights and sending them crashing down, trying to block Sonic's path.
Sonic leapt over the falling street lights, his mind focused on the rhythm of the chase. Each obstacle was a new challenge, each attack a test of his reflexes. He felt the adrenaline coursing through him, the thrill of the race pushing him to his limits.
As they sped through the decaying city, Sonic saw the road ahead blocked by a small horde of Shadow Heartless. They emerged from the darkness, their sinister forms ready to stop him in his tracks. Without hesitation, Sonic jumped into the air, charging a Drop Dash. As he hit the ground, he launched into a Spin Dash, sending the Heartless flying in all directions. The path was cleared, but Metal Sonic used the distraction to fly ahead, ripping more street lights from their posts and throwing them down.
Sonic dashed forward, dodging the falling lights and closing the gap between him and Metal Sonic. The metallic rival swooped down, preparing his V. Maximum Overdrive Attack. He gathered energy, glowing with an intense light before shooting forward like a missile. Sonic anticipated the move, leaping to the side just in time to avoid the deadly charge.
Metal Sonic became vulnerable for a moment after the attack, giving Sonic the opportunity he needed. With a swift Spin Jump, Sonic struck Metal Sonic, sending him spiraling back. Recovering quickly, Metal Sonic retaliated with another Ring Spark Field, but Sonic was already on the move, his reflexes sharp and his movements fluid.
The two continued their high-speed duel, darting through the ruins of Stardust Speedway. Metal Sonic's attacks grew more desperate, his frustration evident. He flew into the foreground again, tearing down more obstacles to block Sonic's path, but Sonic was relentless, his focus unyielding.
Metal Sonic then unleashed a powered-up version of his Ring Spark Field, the air around him crackling with intense energy. Sonic felt the surge of power and knew he had to act quickly. He dashed forward with all his might, his body a blur of blue energy. He closed the distance in an instant, striking Metal Sonic with a powerful kick.
The impact sent Metal Sonic flying back, his systems overloaded and sparks flying from his damaged body. Sonic landed gracefully, watching as Metal Sonic struggled to regain control. The mechanical doppelgänger sputtered and shook, his circuits failing.
With one final, defiant glare, Metal Sonic exploded in a burst of light and metal fragments. Sonic shielded his eyes from the blast, then looked up to see the remains of his rival scattered across the speedway. He took a deep breath, the adrenaline still coursing through him, but a sense of triumph settling in.
Tails, having caught up, joined Sonic, his eyes wide with awe and relief as he descended from the air, his twin tails whirring like helicopter blades. He landed gracefully on the metal ground in front of Sonic, his feet touching down with a soft thud.
"You did it, Sonic!" Tails exclaimed, his voice filled with admiration and excitement. "That was incredible!"
Sonic gave a confident thumbs-up, his expression exuding determination and pride. The bond between the two friends was evident, the victory over Metal Sonic fueled their resolve for the challenges ahead.
RANK: S
"Boy, he wasn't that tough, was he?" Tails jested, which made Sonic smirk and roll his eyes playfully in response.
The two friends looked around the glum and depressing speedway, with parts of Metal Sonic still scattered around.
"You defeated Metal Sonic, but what now?" Tails asked, his voice tinged with uncertainty as he pondered their next move.
Sonic, equally unsure, glanced around. They were searching for answers, unsure of what more they could do here. The twisted remnants of Stardust Speedway stretched out before them, a haunting reminder of the challenge Sonic just faced but also the distortion left behind by Terios's meddling.
Sonic crossed his arms, tapping his foot thoughtfully. The familiar rhythm of his tapping echoed in the stillness, but it provided no answers. He looked at Tails, who was scanning the environment, his eyes filled with concern and confusion. The Blue Blur had triumphed over Metal Sonic, but the unsettling feeling of incompletion hung in the air.
"There's got to be something else..." Tails pondered, his mind racing to piece together what they might have missed.
The chaotic and corrupted version of Stardust Speedway felt unfinished, as if a crucial element was still lurking in the shadows. As they continued their search, Tails's eyes caught something shining nearby but high up. He pointed out and upwards, his voice breaking the silence.
"Hey, Sonic, what's that?"
Sonic followed Tails's gaze and squinted, trying to make out the object in the dim light. His eyes widened as he focused on the shimmering object.
"Is that... a Chaos Emerald?" Tails remarked in surprise.
It was indeed the Blue Chaos Emerald, perched atop a series of platforms.
"Maybe that's what we need to grab to get back to that White Space and save this place?" Tails suggested.
Sonic nodded, looking ready to seize the moment. He turned back to Tails and gave him a thumbs-up before focusing on the platforms ahead.
"Sonic, be careful! Those platforms looks unstable!" Tails cautioned, his concern evident.
The platforms were scattered and required precise jumps to reach. Sonic took a deep breath and dashed towards the first platform. He leapt gracefully, landing with perfect balance. With each jump, he ascended higher, his agility and speed making the task seem effortless. The wind whipped through his quills as he soared from one platform to the next, his focus unwavering.
"Sonic, you're almost there!" Tails called out, his eyes never leaving his friend.
As Sonic neared the top, the Blue Chaos Emerald's glow became more intense. With one final leap, he reached the platform where the Emerald floated. Sonic grasped the Blue Chaos Emerald, feeling its power surge through him. The moment his fingers closed around the gem, everything around them turned into a bright light.
The intense light enveloped Sonic and Tails, lifting them off the ground. The ruins of Stardust Speedway dissolved into a blinding radiance. Sonic held onto the Chaos Emerald tightly, its energy resonating with him. Tails shielded his eyes from the brightness, feeling a strange sensation of warmth and tranquility. The white light grew stronger, washing over the entire landscape of Stardust Speedway.
"Sonic, this light... it's incredible!" Tails shouted over the roar of the energy around them, his voice filled with awe.
As the light continued to brighten, they could feel themselves being transported back to the safety of White Space. The feeling was both exhilarating and calming, a mix of relief and anticipation for what lay ahead. Both of them held onto the hope that their mission had succeeded, and that they had saved Amy from the clutches of the void.
